Draconian Times - Paradise Lost

Widely considered PL's masterpiece and for good reason, Draconian Times was a fantastic progression in terms of songwriting and melodic qualities from their previous Doom/Death sound. For me this and One Second represented the band at their peak and my interest in them somewhat extinguished after Host, though the excellence of 2015's The Plague Within makes me think I was perhaps rather rash in this judgement.

City - Strapping Young Lad

My obsession with heavy music may have flourished in the late nineties but it must be said it was actually a fairly barren period for the form (specially 1997-1999). Yes, you had the odd brilliant release by the likes of Emperor, Opeth or Death but generally speaking this was outnumbered a hundred to one by some god awful supremely popular Nu-metal outfit. However one of the great masterpieces of extreme metal arrived in the late nineties in the form of that mad bastard Devin Townsend, who truly was at his maddest on the cacophonous Industrial metal brilliance that is Strapping Young Lad's City.

One of the most truly apocalyptic albums of all time, Through Silver In Blood was devastatingly different to everything else out there at the time, a nightmarish psychedelic trip into pre-millennial anxiety writ vast and labyrinthine. This blew my fifteen year old brain apart Scanners style.

Definitely one of the creative peaks of late 90's rock music. I was getting interested in hardcore at the time, mostly in the form of early metalcore acts like Will Haven and Vision Of Disorder but this was certainly something altogether different as there was so much incorporation of other styles and experimentation going on. I'm pretty sure the far-left lyrical content appealed a lot to me when I was fifteen too.

I have to admit it took me a while to get into Black and Death Metal, I think mainly because the mainstream rock press (ie Metal Hammer and Kerrang) that I read at the time were so dismissive of the vast majority of extreme metal, treating it like a joke for the most part (while ironically hyping bands like Limp Bizkit). However after listening to my recorded cassette tape copy of Anthems To The Welkin at Dusk from a friend I came to realise the level of depth and genius that was there. Along with City, The Sound Of Perseverance, Still Life and My Arms,Your Hearse this for me is one of the true five star masterpieces of late nineties metal.

Ocean Machine: Biomech - Devin Townsend

Ocean Machine quickly became one of my favourite albums as a sixteen year old, it was just so cool to hear Devin Townsend show his brilliant versatility by releasing a flip-side to the extreme metal of SYL with this beautifully atmospheric progressive rock piece of genius.

Murder Ballads - Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds

This was a deliberate veer into musical territory that wasn't in the metal genre in an attempt to expand my taste, my friend had been listening to a ton of Joy Division and an appreciation for dark Post-punk developed in me. Murder Ballads was basically a cold buy, I'd read about Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds but had never heard them at the time. In terms of my collection it definitely stuck out like a sore-thumb, but as Iv'e come to learn that wasn't a bad thing, though I'm not how much I appreciated that as a sixteen year old lad.

Unknown Pleasures - Joy Division

In retrospect it may have been the dire lack of true quality in metal during the late nineties that made me veer off into altogether different musical territory. Yes there were a few diamonds in the rough (the rough being made of up of Fred Durst clones) but I was sixteen years old and soaking up rock music, film and art (well mostly comic books actually, or graphic novels if you want to be pretentious about it, I still say it's the finest art there is, fuck post-modernism or indeed the renaissance) like no tomorrow and I needed more vigorous cultural sustenance than Nu-metal offered. So I listened to the dark, gloomy post-punk masterpiece that is Unknown Pleasures instead.

Violator - Depeche Mode

Yet more of me dipping into other genres, this time synth-pop, Violator is undoubtedly a classic album, but you knew that already, right?
