I'd probably call this old school Legend of Zelda for the demented and insane. It's definitely a challenging game as there is no save points and the difficulty always depends on the level layouts, having many random types of enemies, each with their own unique attacks and movement patterns. I did find the 1 life no save feature quite annoying at first but it does feel like it is entirely your own fault for not being competent at the game. It is definitely one of the most gruesome games I've played and it does a very good job making you feel like you just entered a horrific nightmare.

I think FTL might teach me something about management and be put to good use in the real world. You really have to think about which resources you have to use, from energy to crew members and you learn the importance of maintenance and sacrifice. I did find some of the levels quite unfair as some enemy ships have the upper hand against yours. Maybe I blame myself for being a not very good ship captain.

Bastion - PC Games

I bet I'm not the only one who wishes that a super awesome voice e.g. Morgan Freeman or John Hurt would narrate their life. Bastion pretty much comes close to that. A narrator that constantly comments on the little things you'd do might sound annoying but if the voice sounded like a butch version of Clint Eastwood's, it certainly makes up for it. The game's strongest aspect is obviously the narrative style, thanks to the narrator's calm but charismatic delivery. While I have this game on PC, I play this game on a gamepad since it feels easier. The combat is quite fun and has variety but does falter with its level design as it is easy to accidentally fall off the edge, with the perception being on an angle.

I have to admit, this is the first game that nearly put me in tears and quite a few times, actually. The Walking Dead is definitely one of the best video game narratives I have experienced in recent years, even being my favourite game of 2012. While Mass Effect 2 introduced time limited decision making, The Walking Dead pretty much perfected it and catered to its incredibly deliberate pacing and emotionally dark tone. Even though the overarching goal of the game was survival, the overall goal is to protect a little girl and deciding whether you shield her from the horrors of an apocalypse or integrate her to the harsh reality of it. I personally adore every single character in this game, whether I like them or hate them since they are fleshed out and written so well. Gameplay wise, it's nothing remarkable or special but it was still interesting and complemented the story's pacing very well. I would've gotten this game on the PC but all 5 episodes were on sale in XBLA for £6 so I have to put up with the shoddy gamepad controls. I stand by on the notion, on the part where you have to ration food, that if you didn't feed Clementine, you are an asshole.

Just an advice: Buy this game package on a discount because I don't think it's worth £4. The two games, Gravity Bone and its sequel Thirty Flights of Loving, together clocking at an average of 20 minutes is a little bit too steep for £4. What I do hope for these two games is that it is a start of something really great. While the length is ridiculously short, the minimalistic style and storytelling gives it a unique charm and atmosphere and reminds me of the old adventure games and I was actually interested in and cared for the cast of characters, even if you only know them for less than 10 minutes. I hope that these games blossom into something really special, there is so much potential in the ideas that these two game have.

Super Meat Boy - PC Games

I don't think I'll be able to complete this game any time soon. Unlike other determined people, I have limits when it comes to frustration and Super Meat Boy wins every time. And I think that is a good thing. While being insanely difficult I think Super Meat Boy has the most perfect platforming controls since Super Mario Bros., I am dead serious. It is so precise that all the mistakes you have made are mostly your fault. I find myself coming back to this game regularly and see if I could beat that one level again, then quit because I realised again how much I suck at the game.

A game about selling stuff. And it is fun as hell. I think this is an RPG where selling items is actually more important than the RPG itself, in contrast to being the other way around. While the gameplay in sales is very strong and surprisingly deep aswell, the RPG elements can be a hit and miss, such as the dungeon exploration since it is a bit random in terms of difficulty. I think I spent more time haggling and dealing with customers, whom I think deep inside, really don't like me. Well, I don't like them either so I charge them 200% extra for a measly piece of bread.

Torchlight II - PC Games

Now, I keep hearing that this game is a Diablo rip off. Just so you know, I have never played any of the Diablo games but I do know that the developers of the Torchlight games actually developed Diablo. So why the complaining then? Any ways, I think this game is pretty awesome. The combat is a bit overindulgent but it's still fun. This is a game of hoarding and it is pretty annoying that you've picked up so many items that it becomes a hassle seeing which to sell and which to keep and I do find it funny that your pet can actually carry the same amount of items as you. Maybe they have the same hoarding problems as you do.

FEZ - Xbox 360 Live Arcade

Watching Indie Game: The Movie recently, I now see this game in a different light. At first, I thought it was one of the cleverest games I have ever played, up there with the Portal series and Braid. While there are no enemies to fight, it is about exploration and navigation and it is fully encouraging thanks to its amazing 2d/3d perspective gameplay. After Indie Game: The Movie, I see it as a meticulous love letter to the 4 holy games that saved gaming from the 1980's video game crash: Super Mario Bros., Legend of Zelda, Metroid and Tetris. I did wish that the map system is a little more detailed than vague as you do end up with unnecessary back track. I do hold some pride over this game since I actually solved the notoriously cryptic Tetris puzzle without any help from FAQs.

Braid - PC Games

For me, this is one of the most mentally difficult games I have ever played. I think I've spent a lot of time, maybe 20 minutes at most, just trying to figure out one measly time puzzle, it was that difficult but also quite intriguing, I mean how do people come up with this stuff? The controls and gameplay are pretty much like Mario's; near perfect in every way and I wouldn't be surprised if it was inspired by it and it is mixed with the Prince of Persia time reversal, which is used to solve the platforming puzzles.

Hotline Miami - PC Games

I have lost count of how many times I died and restarted on this game. One hit death is a bit unfair but it does give it opportunities to think about how you approach your kills. I do question if the colourfully hazy background and atmosphere is part of the art or your character is always high on a killing spree. I recommend using guns for the last enemies in a chapter because if you use it earlier, they will swarm you in seconds. You might consider yourself awesome if you managed to fend of all the swarming enemies. I nearly did that until a shotgun out of nowhere blew me across the room, guts hanging out.

Terraria - PC Games

The so called "Minecraft rip-off". Well, yeah it is pretty much the same, just in 2d. While I do like Terraria overall with its detailed level design and easy to play style, I don't like how stiff the controls are and I do find its building and gathering mouse clicking quite inaccurate. I'll ask now, how do you set up multiplayer? Because it is really irritating me.

Cave Story - WiiWare

This is the only WiiWare game I will buy since they are unfairly expensive, this one not being an exception. I think it's worth 1200 Wii Points is because this game is absolutely huge, I think I'm in 10 hours of the game and I haven't even scratched it. The story is surprisingly deep and quite dramatic and I've seen more emotions and characterisation in the pixelated graphics than most high profile games. When was the last time I actually felt sad about a pixelated bunny rabbit dying? Probably never.

Journey - PlayStation Network

I contemplated if Journey is really an indie game. Thatgamecompany is contracted to make games for Sony but they are still responsible for distribution and development, Sony being just extra help. Now, what the hell can I say that I haven't said about Journey? One of the best games on the PS3. Has one of the best graphics I've seen in any game, the soundtrack is just amazing, it is very effective at getting emotions from players, etcetera etcetera. For a 2 hour game, £10 is a pretty fair price and quite generous coming from the notoriously overpriced PSN store.

Minecraft - PC Games

I don't really need to explain what Minecraft is since it is arguably the most popular independent video game in the world. Getting it out that there is no tutorials (unless you have the lesser Xbox 360 version), it does feel like you are trying to survive and make you experiment with everything in the world. My only problem with this game is that it doesn't have any balance and it is based on luck whenever you start a new game. And yes, I really do hate creepers, they're like what blue shells are in the Mario Kart series. I think I tried to make the Serenity from Firefly in survival mode. 'Twas harder than I imagined. Oh wait, a creeper blew it up.

Limbo - PC Games

As quoted in Zero Punctuation, "Little Big Planet visualised by a suicidal depressive". The game is quite depressing and sometimes quite brutal if you die. I think I saw some guts when the kid got shot by a minigun. What makes this game so unique is its amazing visual style and haunting atmosphere, being that there is little to no music in this game. The gameplay mostly relies on physics puzzles and I do like how your character animates when it moves, it's nearly realistic.

Mark of the Ninja - PC Games

While I do like stealth games, I am absolutely terrible at them. From Dishonored to Assassin's Creed, 75% of the time, I will mess up the stealth and Mark of the Ninja is no brainer. Mark of the Ninja is probably one of the purer stealth games I've played since it takes many elements and mechanics into consideration. The game cleverly uses lighting, shadows, noise and distractions perfectly for stealthing and it makes head on combat feel impractical. The controls can be a bit fidgety at times, especially when you are trying to get off cover or trying to silently take down an enemy via a quick time event. Seriously, developers should stop integrating quick time events to the gameplay, it's very irritating.

Antichamber - PC Games

And I thought Braid was pretentious. Antichamber is a very mind stimulating and clever first person puzzle game as well as an irritatingly pretentious love letter from the developer to themselves. The puzzles feel more like grand statements of egotism rather than something that a player can admire for its cleverness. Don't get me wrong, they are exceptionally clever puzzles, I'm just not a fan of how they are presented. From my ramblings on how pretentious it is, it might be because I'm too much of a dumbass to solve the puzzles but it's not much to ask for it to be a bit more contained with its pretentiousness.

I actually would have never thought of a 16bit RPG that parodies 16bit RPGs. Cthulhu Saves the World is a hilarious parody game as well as a very engaging RPG in its own right and gives homage to the games it is parodying and points out every cliche' that old RPGs such as Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest had in their 16bit days. Cthulhu might actually be one of my favourite game characters as he is just so likeable and funny throughout the game.

I would not have thought that Super Meat Boy would be beaten in terms of the level of frustration from failing. Bit. Trip Runner 2 is an incredibly frustrating yet satisfyingly fun game. When you get all the gold, miss the checkpoint for an extra 50,000 points and without failing, you feel like the most badass person ever. While the 2.5D is nice to look at, 3D backgrounds can distract and I wish there was more of a variety in the music used in the rhythm as most of the levels sound the same. Either way, it is probably one of the best indie games I've played in 2013.

Critical Mass - PC Games

You could probably call this game Tetris 3D since it nearly the same strategy and tension. It is surprisingly difficult to pass a level, even in the normal difficulty because you are trying to find the right colours and placements in a time limit and it is easier said than done because it is hard to tell whether a colour will do a combination or not since the rest of the blocks are hidden away until you uncover them. Maybe I find it quite difficult because I'm not quick enough with the cube rotation but you can't really afford to be too quick because you have to aim the block correctly and if you do it too fast, you will mess it up and will make it even harder to get rid of blocks.

Dust: An Elysian Tail - Xbox 360 Live Arcade

(I own it on PC)

I was quite tempted to get this game on Xbox Live Arcade. Of course, the problem is that I never liked how the games were priced. Dust: An Elysian Tail is something of an intrigue because apparently, it was developed by one single person. If that's the case, the guy needs more recognition because this is a very impressive game in terms of visuals, combat mechanics, and just overall ambition. The game is just gorgeous to look at and the controls are tight as hell, making the combat a lot of fun. It does have some technical issues and I'm not sure if its my PC or the game itself. Save points or shops can be rendered inaccessible, mostly because your Navi furry will be stuck on a prompt hint, and can only be fixed if you go out of the area and back again. I thought they can only be accessed after you beat the enemies but sometimes, that isn't the case.

Sine Mora - PC Games

And I thought I escaped Ikaruga's wrath. Sine Mora is a very difficult but fun hell bullet shootem up. What makes this especially difficult is that the timer is your life, forcing you to kill enemies head on to get extra time. Because it is a head on operation, you are force to go into the line of fire when a barrage of bullets will come at you, making you waste time on dodging instead of killing enemies for time. It is a gorgeous looking game, one of the best looking 2.5 Dimension games I've played. I am enjoying the foreign language furry characters that the game seems to employ as the pilots.

Castle Crashers - PC Games

Oh, how long have I waited for this game to go on sale on Steam, for the right price. I first played Castle Crashers on Xbox Live Arcade when it first came out and I really enjoyed it. This is a four-player co-op beat-em up full of many quirky references and enjoyably juvenile jokes. The combat can get repetitive at points and it is best if it is played with other people.

After famous video game commenter TotalBiscuit declared Brothers as his favourite video game, curiosity hits me right in the face and I waited for it to go down in price on Steam. I think it's a very peculiar title that delivers emotional punches through visuals. The world itself, particularly its individual set-pieces, are the highlights for me because I was just in awe with how unique they are, from the giant's graveyard to the ice caps. The one thing that you really need to get used to is its unorthodox, sometimes unintuitive controls where you move the two brothers with the thumb sticks. It is fortunate that the puzzles and the level design are straightforward to ease the control's frustration.

This is just a humble list about my experience with a number of independent video games. I will mostly comment on how the game plays but sometimes add some quirks that I think sums up the games more. Just stating the obvious, I adore indie games. Whether it be pretentious, innovative, original or have an old school vibe, they are always a complementary with the big budgeted, publisher backed games. New indie games will be added if I played them properly.
