- Beaten the game on the highest difficulty level.

- Exhausted as many dialogue choices and scenarios that's within the scope of my knowledge.

- Unlocked all endings.

My thoughts: Deus Ex was a pretty tough game on medium, so amping up the difficulty wasn't the best of experiences when enemies can kill you so quickly. I never play Deus Ex for the challenge but how much I can bend the game world towards my will.

- Beaten the game at 102% completion.

My thoughts: I must've beaten DKC2 at least 10 times so 102% completion feels like a formality. In fact I could do it without a guide. Shows you how much love I have for this game when sheer memory can see things through.

- Earned all trophies.

- Beaten Hyper Fighting on the highest difficulty level with every character and using 0 continues with Ryu, Guile, Sagat, Dictator and Blanka.

- Achieved Black Belt in Ranked matches online for Hyper Fighting and Super Turbo.

- Attained the maximum 2045 points at Hyper Fighting in ranked matches.

- Currently in the Top 20 of Leaderboards in Hyper Fighting at the time of writing.

My thoughts: I'm not used to seeing myself in online ranking boards so this was a truly great moment for me. It's been a dream of mine to see where I stand against the best players in the world at Street Fighter and this game gave me a glimpse if not the full picture. If there were actual penalties imposed on those who rage quitted and cowards who kept on disconnecting after they pissed themselves seeing my name, I'm sure the rankings would be a whole lot different.

- Beaten the game at 103% completion on several occasions.

My thoughts: The swansong to a great trilogy. I remember the lost world in this game was even harder but I always enjoyed battling K. Rool in this form.

- Beaten all the game modes (including Old Axe Armour) on Level One Hard.

- Completed the Nest of Evil challenge on all difficulty levels.

My thoughts: Probably the hardest thing I did in gaming in recent memory. PoR is one of those games that gets better the tougher it gets. One that forces you to economise your resources and utilise your wits. The battle with Death is a prime example of what I mean. You can pretty much hack and slash him to death on the lower difficulty levels, but level one hard mode is where Charlotte's spells are really brought to the fore. He wasn't the final boss, but beating him under those circumstances was a fist pumping moment for me.

Duke Nukem 3D - PC Games

- Beaten the game on "Damn I'm Good" difficulty level and found all the secret levels.

My thoughts: Major pain in the ass. Although it belongs in the category of 'twitch shooters', I prefer to stop and smell the roses in a game world this beautifully designed instead of playing it like Doom on Nightmare.

- Completed every mission and sidequest available.

My thoughts: Other than the RC missions, it was pretty hectic overall but I managed it. GTA was really made for the PC and given how much I thought San Andreas was meh on the PS2, I doubt I would've enjoyed Vice City as much on console without that all important mouse aim.

Final Fantasy VII - PlayStation

- Acquired every character's best weapons.

- Beaten both Ruby and Emerald Weapon.

My thoughts: Interesting battles if you don't know what you're doing. But if you do, victory kinda feels empty.

Final Fantasy X - PlayStation 2

- Completed the Monster Arena challenge and beaten all the Dark Aeons.

- Won the League and the Tournament in Blitzball.

- Beaten Penance with Tidus, Wakka and Rikku.

My thoughts: I liked building a formidable team in this game. Seeing Tidus and Wakka develop into utter powerhouses by the end of the game was deeply satisfying.

Final Fantasy X-2 - PlayStation 2

- 100% Story Completion and got all endings.

My thoughts: Like Yakuza's Shogi, I never want to play Sphere Break ever again in my life. FFX-2 was fun overall but that was one hurdle I didn't enjoy getting over.

Max Payne - PC Games

- Beaten the game on every difficulty level including "Dead On Arrival" and "New York Minute."

My thoughts: I didn't believe I would do it at first. But it was a game I wanted to experience again so why not push yourself in the process?

- Beaten the game on every difficulty level including "Dead On Arrival" and "New York Minute."

My thoughts: The chance of a different ending kind of spurred me on with this one. And since the rough edges of bullet time and the shooting mechanics from the original have been smoothed out, this wasn't too much of a hassle.

Final Fantasy XII - PlayStation 2

- Attained the best weapons in the game such as the Zodiac Spear and the Yagyu Blade.

- Defeated the hardest mark in the game: Yiazmat.

My thoughts: Too much farming involved for weapons that aren't particularly remarkable aside from their damage factor. Even then, it takes at least an hour for the average person to take down the ultimate mark in Yiazmat which is a pretty pointless fight anyway.

Final Fantasy VIII - PlayStation

- Collected all cards in Triple Triad.

- Defeated secret boss Omega Weapon.

My thoughts: I used to test how many Armageddon Fist combos I could land with Zell on enemies in one turn just for the hell of it. Since Omega Weapon had so many hit points, he was the perfect guinea pig for my most dastard of experiments.

- Defeated Ozma.

My thoughts: More out of curiosity than enthusiasm.

- Beat the game on the highest difficulty level.

My thoughts: No victory parade here since I give less fucks about the game's single player mode than its multiplayer. But it was something very achievable which is why I did it.

Resident Evil 4 - GameCube

- Beaten "Professional" difficulty.

- Unlocked all characters in "The Mercenaries" Mini-Game.

- Attained the Handcannon from "The Mercenaries" Mini-Game by getting 5 star ranking with all characters on all stages.

- Beaten "Assignment Ada" Missions and attained Chicago Typewriter gun.

PS2 version:

- Beaten "Professional" difficulty and unlocked the P.R.L. 412 Gun.

- Completed every chapter in Separate Ways and unlocked Leon's gangster outfit and Ashley's knight armour outfit.

My thoughts: The best unlockables were the costumes without question. On the aesthetic side of things, Ashley's white outfit was my favourite. It was nice and tight-fitting which made it sexy. The Infinite Rocket Launcher was also excellent. Sometimes I felt like I just wanted to obliterate every zombie that's within my vicinity, and the rocket launcher was the perfect weapon to satisfy that lust.

- Acquired the Photon Blade RG by completing all of the substories and sidequests. I'm sorry I couldn't find a picture of Kiryu wielding the weapon. If I remember correctly, it resembled a lightsabre but was twice as long as the ones shown in the pic. Unlike most (if not all weapons) in the game, it's unbreakable so can be used infinitely.

My thoughts: I loved this game. The reward for going through all the sidequests isn't particularly great but at least I had something to show for it. The journey was everything though. Minus Shogi anyway. If Shogi becomes another requirement for unlockables in later games, I doubt I'll be able to muster the same patience again.

Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story - Super famicom and SNES

- Beaten the game on the highest difficulty level in Lee's default fighting mode.

My thoughts: I always felt the nunchuks were brokenly powerful (gee I wonder why?), so I thought I steered myself away from it to give the computer a fighting chance. Since then, going bare knuckle has always been the option I took whenever I played the game. It doesn't change the fact that it's still so bloody easy.

I had so much time when I was young that I couldn't believe the ridiculous lengths I would go to get some of these achievements. Now even for a game I care about, I'm just happy that I even beat it and move on to the next one. The incentives are even greater currently with things like Platinum Trophies which can earn you discounts but I just don't have that drive anymore.

There is a bucket list of things I want to do like for example completing Battletoads and Doom on Nightmare just so I could say I've beaten two of the hardest games in existence. But other than that the challenges to be undertaken have to be worthwhile and not feel like a mindless collectathon.

Amazingly enough, I've also never been a fan of speedruns. I'm one who likes to savour the special moments.
