Purely entertaining

None of these are essential, but they're all solidly entertaining...especially if you're into horror.

This list was helped along by the following lists:
History of Horror by diabolical dr voodoo

Best in Horror: 1980's by Xanadon't

The 80s are by far my favorite decade for horror, perhaps because it's the decade I grew up in but the sheer number of horror films made during those years seems to suggest otherwise. While the horror market suffered at times from oversaturation (especially slashers), the '80s produced a lot of entertaining horror films, launched several series with strong beginnings, and best of all wasn't plagued with unnecessary remakes. Plus Stephen King's work started getting adapted more often, usually with very entertaining results, and I feel like the special effects really picked up during the '80s.

So here's what I consider the best of the best.

Great list! There's just soooo many great horror moviesmade in that decade! :D

Ha, great list.

Two films that I still need to watch and one that I need to give a re-watch.

I think my only disagreement with the list would be Pet Cemetary (not a fan). Ah, and I sort of think of "The Vanishing" as a love story but that is perhaps something I should discuss with my therapist.

The Howling scared the piss out of me at the time but it hasn't held up to well and the special effects in the final scene were pretty dreadful.

The only things I think from the "unseen" section that might make it to the top of my list is "Dead Ringers" and based only on the story "The Changling". Videodrome is still a f'ed up film but I didn't quite hold the same magic when I rewatched it earlier this year.

The only blaring omission to your unseen viewing would be
Wolfen

It was 'the other werewolf film' with more drama and less horror. It has held up a little better then "The Howling".

THIS VIDEO got me interested in the Nightmare on Elm Street series. Gotta love The Fat Boys.

@jaytoast - Wolfen has now been added.

@Pumpkinate - Haha awesome. I remember loving that video when I was younger.

Man, I thought I was the only one who knew about the Fat Boys. Their albums are all out of print now... Such a shame.

Great List!
Glad to see some love for Friday The 13th Part II and H3: Season of the Witch!

Great job man! Of your top 25 never seen The Hunger, Monster Squad, House, or any of the Friday the 13th or Halloween sequels. Been so long for a couple of the others (especially Pet Cemetery) that I'm not sure how I feel about em. Yay, October is coming, so I can try to fix all that!

I'd say Fright Night is the only one on here that I actively didn't much care for. Weird, I know. Just didn't do it for me. Lots of similarities in our list, but certainly enough differences to keep things interesting.

Don't quite understand why you and jaytoast don't find The Howling absolutely 100% awesome, but hey it's cool ;)

Oops, and yeah as far as unseens... Movies I would recommend come October (or of course earlier if you like) are The Changeling and Sleepaway Camp- so far as 'traditional' horror goes. Videodrome, Dead Ringers, Henry are all great too. But the correct mood for watching them doesn't necessarily always align with the 'mood for watching a horror movie' if you know what I mean. (Scanners isn't as essential)

And then there's that weird weird weird movie Tetsuo that I've been trying to get you to watch. Maybe you'll love it, maybe you'll hate it. But ideally you'll be going me soon in the frustration of not being able to track down Tetsuo II: Body Hammer anywhere :)

Just watched Dressed to Kill. Blech. And From Beyond was too much cheese for me.

Plan on watching the rest soon.

What about Psycho II (1983) and Psycho III (1986)?

Good list. I love Hellraiser, The Shining and The Evil Dead films. I'm glad to see Hellraiser so far up on the list as it deserves more praise than it has received.
