I must say, when I watched Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Pt. 1+2) I really associated it with the NS-Regime and the holocaust in many scenes. That's urprsing because in the book I did not at all. ô.o

Something not too overt was Robocop in which the eponymous main character was referred to as the "American Jesus" by its director Paul Verhoeven. On the other hand, its very open in its put down of 80s American values and customs though. A good film.

Harakiri was an allegory about the Bushido code used in WWII, and The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari was an allegory for Germany's control of its people. The ending where the main character is shown to be insane, was there to hide the allegory and avoid censorship; the doctor in the ending is a positive allegory about the German state.

There are a lot of Buddhist allegories in "The Matrix" as well, particularly "There is no spoon," referring to one's ability to change the world by changing one's own mind, and the over-arching theme of escaping from the trapping of life's illusion, and humanity's inability to see through it.

What about Eyes Wide Shut? Wouldn't you argue that Eyes Wide Shut is an Masonic allegory? Or would Eyes Wide Shut fall under the category of an overt depiction of individual powerlessness?
Posted: 5 years, 5 months ago at Jun 20 20:43
Monsieur Verdoux is an allegory for the Holocaust and capitalist destruction of human lives.

One of my new favourite lists! Excellent!

I would like to suggest The Dark Knight Rises and the many talking points that it arises. Here is an excellent article illustrating what I am talking about.
