Rust Creek
A half decent thriller with Hermione Corfeld as a young student who ends up in the wrong part of a forest inhabited by meth makers out to find her and kill her, believing she saw something she shouldn't. Maybe not the most original thriller in the world but the performances were good, the production values high and there was enough twists and turns to keep the attention. Think Deliverance meets Breaking Bad meets I Spit On Your Grave (but without the exploitation and B-movie attitude).

After the anarchy of Deadpool, this sequel somewhat disappoints. The irreverence is still there and the action sequences are decent enough but it wasn't half as funny and in places got quite annoying. A saving grace was the introduction of Domino, who there should have been more of. It also seemed too soon to release it after Avengers: Infinity War, as that was such an enjoyable romp. Deadpool 3 will need something special than just wise-cracks while breaking the fourth wall.

Soldier Blue (1970)
A slow-moving western that explodes into a mass of sickening violence in a finale that will stay with you. Peter Strauss and Candice Bergen star as a couple trying to make their way across the wilderness after an attack. On the way, they come across a series of obstacles that bring them closer together. You can see the massacre at the end is a strong message sent out about the Americans involvement in Vietnam and it hasn't lost any of its shock value.

A reasonable exploitation B-movie has Gabrielle Union as a mother bringing her children to her father's home after his death. Planning to sell his high-security home, she soon finds that the building is under siege from thieves who have locked her out while they hold her children inside. This routine thriller has the added twist of Union as the action hero, a woman who can take on any man and when asked what her secret is, tells the captures: I'm a mother!

Jean-Luc Goddard's sci-fi film noir has Eddie Constantine as a detective who heads to the space city of Alphaville to track down a renowned scientist. A bizarre mix of the French New Wave with crossing genres, this surreal journey is as complex and confusing as you'd expect from Goddard. While you can appreciate why this film is held in such regard, it's far too slow and ponderous and doesn't have any real connection with the viewer.

A vanity project for Melissa McCarthy (as co-writer, star and co-producer with husband Ben Falcone directing) in a predictable tale of a middle-aged woman returning to complete her college education. The story goes along with very little laughs and heads towards the sickly sweet ending. Melissa McCarthy is a funny lady but here she is annoying and you wish she could go back to working with Paul Feig, who seems to know how to get the best out of her. Terrible.

Mark under sequel no one asked for. This sees the return of Gnomeo and Juliet, this time teaming up with Sherlock Gnomes as they investigate the disappearance of gnomes around London. The script lacks any real invention and while the voice cast of starry names tries their best, they cannot inject excitement or fun in a by-the-book adventure. I hope the writers cannot think of any more literary puns with gnomes they can add to the title.

Outstanding drama with Kirk Douglas as a disgraced newspaper reporter desperate to make his mark on the industry again by joining a small paper and giving them an exclusive; a man trapped down a collapsed cave. Only problem is, he will do anything to manipulate the situation to his own aims. Billy Wilder's superb film is a gripping tale with an unexpected turn of events. Quite possibly Douglas's finest hour as the deeply nasty reporter.

Ghost Mask (Scar)
Korean thriller about a girl looking for her missing sister, who finds friendship with a plastic surgeon and her partner, a young woman who seems to have issues with the unwanted guest. Hard to follow in the first ten minutes but once the confusions as to who is who is cleared, this is an effective thriller which twists and turns to a totally bonkers ending. Once quibble, the blood is computer generated. Why not use fake blood?
Action adventure with Owen Wilson as a disgruntled pilot who finds himself alone and behind enemy lines in Bosnia, trying to escape from a rebel army. Meanwhile, commander Gene Hackman is powerless to get him out due to political complications. John Moore tries his best to inject some excitement in this routine adventure with flashy camera work but it's hard to take Wilson serious as an action hero when we know him so well as a chilled comic actor.

File under "so bad, it's good!" A ropey martial arts action film from Cannon Pictures has Franco Nero as a former army vet now a newly trained ninja, who goes to visit a friend and finds himself coming up against a ruthless businessman who wants his friend's land. The fight sequences are hilarious with some very over-the-top deaths, while Nero's wooden performance makes him the least exciting action hero. Call in Chuck Norris, please!

Robert Aldrich directs this gangster movie in which Kim Darby plays a wealthy young woman kidnapped by a small-time gang with big ambitions. This violent remake of a 1940's British drama moves the story to America's Depression where even the family have no honour, while Aldrich tries to cash in on the success f Bonnie and Clyde. Slightly too long but the attention to detail and Aldrich's macho approach to filmmaking is here for all to see.

A pretentious tale of two couples lost in a forest trying to find their mission children. This laborious drama jumps from one-time zone to another while long tracking shots of part of the forest interrupt the drama, as the couples amble through the woodlands without any urgency. Any film you have to read the director's notes to understand what you have watched, in my mind, fails. A bore!

Game of Death (1978)
Really poor martial arts movie that uses the very few scenes that Bruce Lee filmed (around 15 minutes) and built around it tale of mobsters who are trying to kill a movie star. Replacing Lee with actors who hide their faces with sunglasses, in shadows or (worst of all) a photo superimposed. The acting is dire and the only reason to watch this is for the two fights that Lee filmed in 1972 when he was originally planning this movie. Dire.

Somewhat dated sex comedy with George Segal as a mild-mannered writer whose life is turned upside-down when Barbra Streisand's prostitute enters his life. Based on a stage play, Buck Henry's screenplay cannot escape the stagey nature of this virtual two-hander and while both Streisand and Segal do their best with the material, the humour relies on them bickering and shouting at each other. It's enjoyable in fits and starts but on the whole, it should be looked upon as a curiosity of the time.

Having invested 10 years in this growing universe, it has come to this, a massive, epic adventure on a huge scale that brings together the heroes from the various movies to take on Thanos, the villain who has been in the background of most of these movies since The Avengers. It doesn't disappoint. It had me laughing, crying, shaking and whooping. From the outset, it sets its stall up that this isn't going to be an easy ride and as for the finale. Wow!

A disappointing horror film that borrows heavily from Final Destination but without the scares or the gore. A group of friends head off to Mexico for Spring Break and are lured into a desolate monastery to play a game of truth or dare, not knowing that the game is possessed and the players have to keep playing otherwise they die. The problem, apart from the unbelievable concept, was that it telegraphed each death way in advanced so the scares weren't there. Not very good.

Classic 1950's paranoid sci-fi in which a man, while holidaying on a boat, sails through a mist and soon discovers that he is shrinking, having to face the attention of the press as well as dangers from creatures he thought he would never have to face. Jack Arnold's film is still regarded as a classic of the genre, even though it may be dated now. Surprised no one has ever remade it.

Filed under "So Bad, It's Good" this kitsch 80's sci-fi adventure follows two sisters who find themselves battling zombies and other surviving humans after a comet comes close to crashing on Earth. This low-budget B-movie has some elements of fun with the girls and their mission to survive, yet it runs out of steam a long way in and it becomes somewhat tiresome and the fun soon disappears.

Cameron Crowe's romantic comedy about the ups and downs of a group of singletons to the background of a Grunge Seattle. This pleasing story follows the turbulent relationship of Kyra Sedgwick and Campbell Scott, while Matt Dillon's guitarist has to deal with groupie Bridget Fonda. Crammed with great music and razor-sharp dialogue, this is a heady mix of the things that make Crowe's movies so entertaining. Plus, whatever happened to the delightful Bridget Fonda?

Disney's 1973 animation is a delightful retelling of the legend of Robin Hood, as he takes on King John and the Sheriff of Nottingham. With a solid array of voice talents including Peter Ustinov and Terry-Thomas as John and his assistant Sir Hiss and Roger Miller supplying the narration and songs, this might not be held in the same breath as the classic Disney but is beloved by those who watch it as an easy-going, delightful and colourful romp.

Gentle, charming British drama set just after the war, where writer Lily James receives a letter from a book club in Guernsey after they have read one of her books. She heads to the small island and discovers the founder of the group has disappeared and a mystery starts. All very nice and perfect with a cup of tea but not a single shock or surprise in it. Does exactly what it says on the posters. A strong ensemble cast works well. Not terrible by a long shot, just a little safe.

A slow-moving, yet fully emotional drama with Shirley Henderson as a woman suffering from Parkinson's disease trying to cope with having to fend for herself after her husband dies, while her son has to cope with bullying at his workplace and confused with his sexuality. Beautifully shot, this doesn't rush through its storytelling and in places, scenes outstay their welcome. Yet it is Henderson's extraordinary performance that keeps you gripped and is the heart of this tragedy.

Woody Allen's most personal film, his variation of Fellini's 8 1/2. A film director is invited to a retrospective of his work and while his fans love his earlier, funny films, he is now making deep, philosophical dramas while being inspired by the women in his life, particularly an actress who had problems. Filmed in black and white, this covers all of Allen's neurosis as well as an attack on critics and the whole filmmaking process.

A drama that has very little to laugh about, following the rise of a female comic in Northern Britain during the 70's. Maxine Peake is magnificent as Funny Cow, a woman who has had to deal with abuse her whole life but finds a way out of her life by performing stand-up comedy in a male-dominated world. Paddy Considine plays against type as a mild-mannered intellectual but the film belongs to Peake, who commands the screen with a heartfelt and powerful performance.

Frank Sinatra stars in a very dated private eye thriller, playing Tony Rome, an ex-cop hired by a millionaire to find a missing piece of jewellery and getting involved in the mob and the Miami PD. The sexual politics are very dubious and there is an air of misogyny and while Sinatra breezes through this without trying for character development, the thrills aren't as thrilling and you still think that Marlowe with James Garner sets the bar when it comes to 60's PI dramas.

The late Milos Forman takes on the impossible by adapting the free-wheeling 60's musical, Hair, and turning it into a coherent movie. The story of a soldier heading to Vietnam and finding himself being wooed by a tribe of hippies is brimming with energy and terrific songs but as a stage show, it's more an experience, a concert. By trying to add transfer and open up the film, it loses its impact, which is a shame as this is one of the great modern musicals.

Big screen version of the hit musical which is based on Fellini's 8 1/2. Daniel Day-Lewis stars as a popular Italian film director struggling to find a script for his new movie and using the many women in his life for inspiration. Director Rob Marshall tries to capture the mood of Fellini's original while staging the musical numbers with style and panache. Most memorable being Fergie's Be Italian and Kate Hudson's Italiana. Not everyone's cup of tea but impressive still the same.

A decent cast is wasted in a flat, uninvolving action movie about an elite team of the police force who have to face with day-to-day training until they are called upon to escort a French criminal who places a bounty on those who can break him out of police custody. Samuel L. Incredibly silly comedy western as three actors are mistaken for gunslingers and are asked to take on a notorious Mexican bandit. Dwayne Johnson reteams with director Brad Peyton for another destruction-fest blockbuster about a group of extraordinary large animals heading to cause chaos in Chicago. The final act delivers what is promised but it takes itself far to seriously and there's too much exposition that slows the film down. Heading into the wilderness where the criminal has hooked up with a fishing party, being led by Kirstie Alley, Poitier has to team up with wilderness expert Tom Berenger but will nature kill them before they can find their target. A decent enough British horror film that is reminiscent of the old Amicus anthology movies of the 70's, in which a professor setting out to investigate three unexplained and unconnected paranormal incidents, only to discover that something in his past is about to rear its head. Based on the hugely successful stage play, this has plenty to admire, from the slickness of the direction to the performances and a delicious twist, yet it relies on jump scares and after A Quiet Place, this pales in its path.

The Rainmaker (1997)
Francis Ford Coppola directs this version of John Grisham's novel, with Matt Damon as a fresh-faced lawyer who takes on an insurance company who refused to pay a dying man, while at the same time falling for a woman being abused by her husband. Coppola does nothing fancy, just plays out the drama, which is gripping and the usual cliches you'd find in a Grisham/courtroom drama. A first-rate cast, head by Damon and Danny DeVito help make this hugely entertaining.

A fascinating documentary set in the confines of a retreat in France set up by Zen Buddhist monk Thich Nhat Hanh, who was regarded as the master of mindfulness. With full access to the lives of the followers, with Benedict Cumberbatch reading some of Hanh's writings, this quiet and gentle film captures the mood and feel of the retreat, while at the same time showing a side of the followers outside the confines and in their family homes, which are often charming and moving.

A perfect example of the 80's sex comedy as a group of teens spend their times trying to have sex and being humiliated at Porky's, a bar and bordello that the honey boys go to. This is a film made up of a series of set pieces and while are predictable and try too hard to be serious, there are some classic parts, from Kim Catrell's Lassie to the conversation of how to capture a flasher in the girl's shower. Yes, it's infantile but it still has plenty of belly laughs to make it a solid comedy.

A dire comedy in which Ashton Kutcher and Brittany Murphy play lovers from different sides of the tracks who get married and head off on their honeymoon which is a series of disasters. The problem with the film is that relies too much on poorly time slapstick and a sense of unbelievability. THX 1138 (1971)
I have always been slightly afraid of watching George Lucas's debut movie, as I had heard such horrible things. I need not worry. This is a complex dystopian drama in which humans are drugged so they cannot think for themselves. When THX 1138 stops taking the pills, he starts thinking and becomes a fugitive on the run. The cinematography is stunning while the stark white gives it a unique feel. Robert Duvall as THX is superb. Ig Lucas stuck to this type of filmmaking: challenging, intelligent and beautiful.

Four brothers return home after their mother dies to find a very different world than when they left, as they try to find out what happened to their family home. John Wayne and Dean Martin lead the cast in this old-fashioned western adventure where there's plenty of shoot-outs and traditional cowboy fare, helped by a solid script that plays out more like a whodunnit. Most horrors use the quiet-loud as a tool to shock. This superb film from John Krasinski uses it as part of the tension building to relentless perfect use. A family must spend their time in silence otherwise deadly creatures will come to kill. Emily Blunt is magnificent as the pregnant mother while Krasinski is the protective father in a film that grabs you from frame one and refuses to let go. Walter Hill's reworking of Yojimbo (and A Fistful of Dollars) moves the story to a desert land in Texas where two gangs of booze runners try to run the territory until stranger Bruce Willis arrives and starts playing the gangs against each other in order to make some money. Hill's version has the violence and the slow motion and yet the pacing is a lot slower and the film drags in places. Willis tries his best to Clint Eastwood but comes short and the finale is a little too ordinary.

An absolutely cracking action film with Sylvester Stallone as John Rambo, a former Vietnam veteran who, while stopping off in a small town starts a war against the police who arrested him. This was the start of the Rambo phenomenon but this is by far the best in the series, as we see Rambo fighting for survival in a woodland while the police want blood. Proof with this biopic of Alfred Kinsey, a professor who gave up his passion for insects in order to create a study on the sexual habits of males. Terrific psychological thriller with Cate Blanchett as an art teacher who begins an affair with a student, only for fellow teacher Judi Dench to find out. Agreeing to help, what Blanchett doesn't know is that Dench is infatuated with her. Richard Eyre's film is a dream ticket for both actresses, with Dench at her creepiest.
