Terry Gilliam's brilliant and bizarre 1984-esque comedy drama with Jonathan Pryce as a man working for a ministry who dreams of a beautiful woman and needs to get to her before the government does. Brimming with invention and surreal moments of madness, along with an outstanding cast including Robert De Niro, Bob Hoskins and Michael Palin playing against type. See the full director's cut of you can and enjoy a master filmmaker at his brilliant best.

Super 8 (2011)
More Spielberg than Spielberg. J.J. Abrams homage to 80's cinema tells the story of a group of young filmmakers who get caught up in the strange goings-on in their town after a horrific train crash. Brimming with references to Spielberg's back catalogue, this adventure has some delightful dialogue and a great score reminiscent of John Williams. The train crash sequence is spectacular and the whole thing zips along to its perfect finale. A treat.

Fourteen years after their first outing, The Incredibles is back. This time, Elastigril is the one going out to work while Mr Incredible stays home playing the father. This long-awaited sequel covers most of the same ground as the original although a badly underwritten villain never pushes the story into new territories. Baby Jack-Jack steals the film from everyone as the family realise his many superpowers and yes, it's loads of fun but it lacks the wow factor that the first film had.

Who would have thought that after 6 movies, this new Mission: Impossible entry could be the best? An edge-of-your-seat roller coaster ride with everything you want from an M:I movie and then some. Tom Cruise runs, fights, climbs and jumps his way through a preposterous plot, yet the set pieces and action sequences, which come thick and fast, are exhilarating and extraordinary. Hold on to your seats, folks, this could be the blockbuster of the Summer of 2018!

A film that so wants to be TOwering Inferno and Die Hard but doesn't have any of the wit, tension or intelligence. A former soldier and Hostage negotiator, injured in the line of duty, becomes a security assessor for a skyscraper in Hong Kong. When arsonists set the building alight, he has to get into the building to prove his innocence and to save his family. Dwayne Johnson has to use his charm to save this B-movie hokum but even he struggles with a film that takes itself far too seriously.

Kevin MacDonald directs this documentary about the life and untimely death of Whitney Houston, with the full support of her family and with use of archive footage and recordings. Telling the tale of a young girl and her meteoric rise to superstardom and how her demons and secrets became her downfall. With moments like her first live TV appearance to the legendary rendition of The Star-Spangled Banner, this is a story that will surprise you as well as make you cry.

John Carpenter's modern western is a masterclass of low-budget thrillers as a deserted police station comes under siege, with a cop, a secretary and two prisoners having to fight to stay alive. Borrowing from Night of the Living Dead and Rio Bravo, this builds the tension nicely with dark humour and brilliant use of light. It also has one of the most notorious scenes, the ice-cream van sequence. Still managing to pull no punches, even after over 40 years.

Back on the big screen, this 60's psychedelic animation has the Beatles helping out the people in Pepperland from the Blue Meanies. Crammed with invention from the animation and plenty of classic Beatles songs, it plays more like a junkie's nightmare. Yet it's surprisingly joyful and the gags deliver plenty of chuckles, even if they are really bad. It's a fascinating film that captures a time when all we needed was love.

The best of the Pink Panther series, thanks to the superb comic timing of Peter Sellers as Inspector Clouseau, brought back to find who stole the legendary diamond, while Christopher Plummer's Charles Litton, the prime suspect, does his own investigation. The set pieces are expertly put together, from Clouseau's inept searching for clues in both Lady Litton's home and hotel room, to Sellers' perfect pratfall following a diver into a swimming pool. Hilarious.

This is such a funny yet dark film which manages to balance between the light and shade. Helped by a superb ensemble cast and a film-stealing performance from Jason Issac, this has moments that will shock, horrify but ultimately make you laugh. I loved it just as much as I did the first time I saw it.

Tag
Madcap comedy based, very loosely, on a true story about a group of friends who, every May, play a game of tag. They do have a main aim...to get friend and elusive player Jeremy Renner. As he is getting married, he becomes the target of the others involved. While the concept, based on a real group of friends, seems bizarre and it's not as funny as it could be, this is a perfectly light comedy that has the occasional moments that work, even if there is one section that does cross the path of extreme bad taste.

Sequel minus Emily Blunt, director Denis Villeneuve and cinematographer Roger Deakins, yet it managed to be an effective stand-alone thriller. With the cartels sending terrorists across the border, the US government agree to a plan to kidnap the daughter of a top cartel and passing the blame to the other. Benicio Del Toro and Josh Brolin return in a film that has a simpler plot than the original but sadly the final act has one misstep.

Decent spy thriller about a Russian ballet dancer who had escaped to the West, finding himself crash landing in Russia and being held along with an American tap dancer. Mikhail Baryshnikov and Gregory Hines are superb and are allowed to show off their dancing skills, while ably supported from Isabelle Rossellini (in her debut film) and Helen Mirren. Slightly dated now with the Cold war backdrop but still plenty to enjoy, particularly the duet between the two leads.

Patrick (2018)
Terrible British comedy with Beattie Edmonson as a young woman who inherits her aunt's pug. Along with her new job and the meeting of two very different men, she finds her life becoming too complicated for a dog. From the director of Absolutely Fabulous The Movie should have been warning enough, as this unfunny film cannot make up its mind who its audience is, while actors who should know better, mug like crazy all in the cause of comedy. Slightly better than Show Dogs.

Outstanding thriller from Denis Villeneuve, with Emily Blunt as an FBI agent forced to join a secret operation involving the Mexican border. Josh Brolin plays her new boss while Benicio del Toro is terrific as a mysterious agent with an ulterior motive for his actions. The direction is superb while Roger Deakins's cinematography is immense. Includes the best stationary car chase ever that has more tension than a dozen sequels. One of the best thrillers of the 21st century.

Classic drama with William Holden as a down-on-his-luck screenwriter who finds himself stumbling to the world of legendary silent film star Norma Desmond, brilliantly played by Gloria Swanson. John Carpenter's underrated cult classic has Roddy Piper as a drifter who finds himself facing aliens that he can see when using a special pair of sunglasses. Carpenter's fun sci-fi action picture has plenty of set pieces and some off-the-wall one-liners like the now infamous "I came to chew bubble gum and kick ass...and I'm all out of bubble gum!" Piper is ably supported by David Keith and their epic fight sequence has gone down in cult cinema history as one of the best.

All female reboot of the Ocean's films with Sandra Bullock as Debbie Ocean, a woman fresh out of prison and planning an elaborate crime in which she and a gang of women steal a valuable diamond necklace during the Met Gala. With Cate Blanchett by her side and Anne Hathaway and Helena Bonham Carter chewing the scenery, this may have plenty of flaws and yet it's as much fun as the George Clooney films. Perfect popcorn fodder.

Jacques Tati's debut feature is a pure delight of gentle French humour. A small village sees the arrival of a fair which affects the locals, particularly the clumsy, yet good-natured postman. Brimming with delights and those touches that have made Tati's film not only comedy gems but there is plenty here to delight. One of those films that will bring a smile even to the most harden-hearted individual. Lovely.

A tough classic drama with Burt Lancaster as an all-powerful Broadway columnist who persuades Tony Curtis's desperate press agent to break up the relationship between Lancaster's sister and a jazz musician. One of those films where the dialogue crackles and deserves multiple screenings to capture the effect of the performances. Lancaster and Curtis have never been better is a game of wit. A film that will stay with you.

Love Possibly
British fly-on-the-wall mockumentary about a young man's hunt for love. This rom-com loving virgin turns to a Russian bride website and falls for a girl from Moldovia. This comedy wants to be like a Ricky Gervais film but the lead character is too much like a stereotype and the jokes aren't funny enough. A pity as this has so much potential but the man is just annoying and it becomes unbelievable and predictable.

Slow burning horror drama with Toni Collette as a woman whose mother dies, bringing with it a divide within her family, while at the same time hiding a dark secret. When tragedy strikes again, the secret starts to appear. Raved by critics, this is flawed, certainly but it does manage to get under the skin. Some have said it's the 21st century's The Exorcist but if you follow that, you will be disappointed. It will infuriate, frustrate and even bore some but I found it had a 70's tone in it's pacing that worked for me.

Ludicrous adventure with Roy Ely as Doc Savage, a man of strength as well as brain, who goes in search of the truth about his father's death. Produced by George Pal, this romp has some silly set pieces and green, animated snakes to up the peril. The dialogue is sometimes ridiculous and it does look like a film made for TV but for nostalgia fans and those who remember it as a child, this will bring back a fond sense of the kind of films they don't make anymore.

The Man From U.N.C.L.E. gets the big screen version as two episodes of the popular show are spliced together. Robert Vaughn as Napoleon Solo is captured by T.H.R.U.S.T and replaced by a cloned identical. A real sense of 60's style and sexism is mixed together with a plot with so many holes, you wonder how these guys could ever be spies. Total nonsense and fun while watching but is almost immediately forgettable. Absolutely no close to Bond.

A classic in every sense of the word. A down-on-his-luck boxer, with no hopes in life, gets the opportunity of a lifetime to compete for the Heavyweight championship. Sylvester Stallone's gentle drama of a simple man with no real ambition who gets that lucky break. A brilliant ensemble cast leads to a heart-racing finale. A worthy Oscar winner, it set the bar for other boxing movies, including the montage training scenes. Charming and exciting in equal measures.

An absolute stinker as Will Arnett's FBI agent teams up with an LAPD police dog to track down a kidnapped baby panda. Their only clue is that it could be sold at a dog show in Las Vegas. The dogs talk but the humans can't hear them but the script is so terrible, the humour so lame and one sequence is shocking to find in a family film. Adults will be increasingly annoyed while the younger audience might find these irritating dogs just too much. Appalling.

A simple, non-pretentious drama about a woman coping with finding out the truth about her past that starts to affect her own life. From the first ten minutes, I knew this was going to be a good film. Really well acted, beautifully shot and one particular moment was incredibly moving. Reminded me of Almodovar's work with the way the females characters take centre stage. A terrific piece of work.

A classic character study with Jack Nicholson on exceptional form as a middle-class man who could have been a fantastic musician who turns his back on his piano playing to work in a lower-class environment until he is forced to return home. Nicholson's character is hardly sympathetic and the plot is nothing more than a series of incidents but the film is superbly executed and the diner scene must go down as one of the most famous.

Outstanding British ensemble drama about the women working at Ford's in Dagenham, who decide to strike for equal pay and rights as the same as their male counterparts. The always brilliant Sally Hawkins takes the lead in a cast of the finest quality in British acting. This is one of those feel-good dramas that you could never get bored with and seems to get better with every viewing. The sense of period is terrific as is the soundtrack of classy 60's tracks.

First-time I have seen this since it's initial cinema release back in 1983. Small town girl who works as a welder during the day and dances in a club at night, dreams of becoming a classically trained dancer. Plot-wise it's as thin as paper with little or no real character development but the music is good, Adrian Lyne's direction is flashy and Jennifer Beal, even though doesn't do the dancing, is a likeable lead. It just feels very empty.

Maleficent (2014)
A reimagination of the story of Sleeping Beauty, as told from the point of view of Maleficent, the evil fairy who put the curse on the princess. Angelina Jolie relishes playing the powerful fairy, with her strong cheekbones and pouting lips, while Elle Fanning makes for an agreeable princess. The film's real fun comes from Imelda Staunton, Leslie Manville and Juno Temple's good fairies. Bright, imaginative but doesn't manage to capture the magic of the original Disney cartoon.

A gloriously entertaining horror comedy with Bill Pullman, Bridget Fonda, Oliver Platt and Brendan Gleeson as a mismatched group hunting for a giant crocodile who is eating his way through Lake Placid. The film's strength lies in the banter of the four leads while the horror is in the same vein as Jaws. while it's not a patch on Spielberg's 1975 shark thriller, this has plenty to enjoy and no matter how silly it gets, the cast keeps it refreshingly fun.

The sequel to the newly reformed Jurassic Park series sees the island on the verge of destruction from a volcano. A rescue mission to save some of the dinosaurs is put into place with Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard back to help, yet there is a much darker reason for the capture of these creatures. Everything you expect from a Jurassic film is here and that's also the problem. It doesn't deliver anything different that we haven't seen before. Entertaining, yes but you'll crave something more.

A decent, straight-forward biopic of the rise to fame of Buddy Holly, from country singer to rock n' roll king. Gary Busey won an Oscar nomination for his performance, in which he sings all the songs himself and live. Solid support too from Don Stroud and Charles Martin Smith as his friends who made up The Crickets. While the direction isn't flashy and it looks more like a TV movie, it still has plenty to enjoy and the music is terrific.

Stanley Kubrick's classic sci-fi drama, reissued to celebrate its 50th anniversary, is still an awe-inspiring experience on the big screen. The future of mankind is in the balance after a mysterious object is found under the moon's surface, leading to an expedition to Jupiter, guided by a computer with an ulterior motive. Considering the time this film was made, it is a masterpiece of cinema, even if it still baffles and frustrates. Having it back on the big screen is a cinephile's delight.

A beautifully acted, moving drama based on Ian McEwan's best seller. Saorise Ronan and Billy Howle star as a newly married couple on their honeymoon and about to consummate the marriage. With both parties extremely nervous, the experience could have huge complications not only to their past but for their future. Told in flashbacks as well as set mainly in a hotel room, this is a touching tale of two people who love each other but struggle with showing how much love. Great performances from both the leads.

While this sequel moves the characters from their original surroundings, I prefer this to the first film, mainly for the added bonus of Amy Adams and the humour comes across as something Monty Python would have produced. Yes, it has genuine belly laughs and the cast give it they're all. It's silly and ludicrous but it also has charm and just the scene between Ben Stiller and Hank Azaria arguing about boundaries is worth watching.

Complex espionage thriller with Alec Guinness as a vacuum cleaner salesman in Havana who is approached by British Intelligence to work for them. In order for him to be looked upon as important, he feeds them false information. Carol Reed's second film version of a Grahame Greene story has a strong cast including Burl Ives and Maureen O'Hara. A complete waste of talent as four lifelong friends have their lives turned upside down when one brings Fifty Shades of Grey to their monthly book club. A script that ticks every cliched box, while the lead females throw themselves into their roles, even if none of it feels real. Monte Hellman's supposed break into the Hollywood mainstream with this road movie across America was an enormous flop on its first release, thanks to characters who hardly speak unless its about cars, a girl no one knows a thing about and Warren Oates as a middle-aged man clinging onto his youth by picking up random hitchhikers and challenging the young car owners to a race. Honeybee
Utter pretentious claptrap. A woman wanders the streets of New York in search of love. She ends up in a drug den and is transformed into a prostitute where she listens to the garbled nonsense from the people she meets. Terrible, incoherent and a waste of 2 hours of my life.
The sequel to Spielberg's mega-blockbuster may not be as good as the original and the ending is more than a tad ridiculous but there are moments when the film manages to outstrip the first film in tension. It's a masterclass in Spielberg's power as a director, to build suspense (the truck over the cliff scene a perfect example). A decent cast led by Jeff Goldblum, with a young Julianne Moore and Vince Vaughn, as well as the mighty Pete Postlethwaite hold it all together.

The second stand-alone Star Wars movie is a flawed but fun romp with Alden Ehrenreich stepping into the shoes of Harrison Ford as the rogue bandit Han Solo, showing his origins and how he meets and befriends Chewbacca. The action is fine and the performance is full of energy yet this troubled production does suffer from an uneven tone and coming out far too close to The Last Jedi. A half decent thriller with Hermione Corfeld as a young student who ends up in the wrong part of a forest inhabited by meth makers out to find her and kill her, believing she saw something she shouldn't. Maybe not the most original thriller in the world but the performances were good, the production values high and there was enough twists and turns to keep the attention. Think Deliverance meets Breaking Bad meets I Spit On Your Grave (but without the exploitation and B-movie attitude).

After the anarchy of Deadpool, this sequel somewhat disappoints. The irreverence is still there and the action sequences are decent enough but it wasn't half as funny and in places got quite annoying. A saving grace was the introduction of Domino, who there should have been more of. It also seemed too soon to release it after Avengers: Infinity War, as that was such an enjoyable romp. Deadpool 3 will need something special than just wise-cracks while breaking the fourth wall.

Peter Strauss and Candice Bergen star as a couple trying to make their way across the wilderness after an attack. On the way, they come across a series of obstacles that bring them closer together. Jean-Luc Goddard's sci-fi film noir has Eddie Constantine as a detective who heads to the space city of Alphaville to track down a renowned scientist. A bizarre mix of the French New Wave with crossing genres, this surreal journey is as complex and confusing as you'd expect from Goddard.
