A rom-com that didn't make me feel sick. Steve Carell is the widower with three daughters who spends a weekend with his extended family. When out, he meets Juliette Binoche and they hit it off. What he doesn't know is that she is dating his brother. A film full of awkward moments but you like spending time with the characters and so the romance, which isn't forced, works. The mix of the two leads helped as you couldn't hate them even if you tried.

John Landis does the impossible by mixing comedy with horror and making it stick. Two Americans on the Yorkshire Moors, are attacked, leaving one dead and the other badly injured. Hospitalised in London, he soon discovers that they were attacked by a werewolf and the line is still in him. The transformation sequence is still incredible considering it wasn't computer generated. One moment your laughing, the next screaming. A bona fide classic.

Slick, stylish and very cool, this all-star remake of the Brat Pack 60's classic has all the right moves as George Clooney and Brad Pitt pull a team together to rob three Vegas casinos. Director Steven Soderbergh brings together a mix of smart dialogue with a twisting heist movie that will have you scratching your head while loving every minute of it. The cast seems to be having a great time and so do you.

One of Norman Wisdom's later film starts to feel a little clunky as Norman plays an accident-prone man sent to a seaside town to work on a local newspaper, causing disaster everywhere he goes and upsetting the political community. A few of the set pieces work (a scene where Norman finds himself attached to a hanging lamp is amusing) but the pathos fails to work and it all comes across as laboured. A pity as Norman's previous films has charm. This doesn't

Repossessed (1990)
Terrible spoof comedy based around The Exorcist with Linda Blair as a woman who is repossessed by the devil and her exorcism will occur on TV. Leslie Nielsen plays the priest send to save her. You can see that some of the jokes could work if they weren't hammered home and delivered without a hint of good timing. It wants to be Airplane but it cannot even hold a candle to that classic. Uncomfortably embarrassing.

A dire sequel to the joyfully self-indulgent original has Burt Reynolds and the star cast going through the motions again, only with more slapstick Road Runner style comedy that often looks pathetic. Even the inclusion of Frank Sinatra cannot lift the film. It passes the time but if you are a fan of the 1981 film, then best to ignore this and move on. The outtakes at the end of the film manage to save this from being a complete disaster.

The Predator (2018)
If anyone could save this failing franchise, it's Shane Black. Sadly that's not the case, with an incoherent plot and characters you care little for, this violent yet drab sequel doesn't bring anything new to the table and Black's usual sharp dialogue is sadly lacking. A troubled post-production hasn't helped as it feels we are missing key scenes as it jumps from one dull action set piece to another. This year's biggest disappointment.

Low-key and very relevant tale of a girl (Chloe Grace Moretz) who is forced to go to a church camp after she is caught in the back of a car with another girl. his examination of gay conversion therapy is something that has come back in American politics, yet this tale, set in the 90's, like BlacKkKlansman, might as well be set now. Brilliantly understated performance from Moretz as well as the strong supporting cast makes this an enjoyable yet poignant tale.

A bizarre black comedy from Tony Richardson, with Robert Morse as an English poet who heads to Hollywood to stay with his uncle. After he commits suicide, the poet finds himself was drawn to a funeral parlour and in particular, a young woman who works there. This comedy is very uneven and some of the humour misses the target massively. Plays out more as a curious cult favourite thanks to the cameos from the likes of Liberace. The film drags by the final act when the humour switches to more a romance.

Another Burt Reynolds/Hal Needham team up as Reynolds plays a top stuntman who starts to feel his age and his insecurities when a new, younger stuntman arrives on the scene. Very little plot but the stunts are terrific, especially the finale, while the rest of the film relies on Reynolds charm. A perfect film to sit back, switch your brain into neutral and just go with it. they just don't make them like this anymore.

A terrible entry in the Conjuring franchise which shows the origins of the nun who haunts the team. Set in a nunnery in Romania, a priest and a novice nun must investigate the death of a nun, only to discover the building has the gates of hell in the basement. A film with no scares whatsoever in a film that is shot in near darkness and relying on jump scares. About as scary as reading an Enid Blyton book, it's time to stop making these dire so-called horrors.

With the sad passing of Burt Reynolds, another opportunity to see his silliest film which I will always hold dear to my heart. So it has no plot, a collection of big names messing around but the energy and sense of insane fun oozes off the screen. Guilty pleasure? Nothing guilty about loving this. R.I.P JJ.

A woefully unfunny comedy from Brian Henson, son of Jim. After a series of murders of puppets from a former TV series, a private investigator has to team up with cop Melissa McCarthy to find out who is committing the crime. Having muppet-style puppets having sex and swearing every other word a comedy does not make and you find yourself getting angry that you wasted your time watching a poor man's Meet The Feebles, which was terrible as well. Avoid.

Terrific fun blockbuster which manages to take the legend of King Kong and do something interesting with it. Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson and Samuel L. Jackson star as a group heading to a secret island only to discover that a giant ape is king and it protects the natives from the other monsters from the deep. With smacks of Apocalypse Now, this might not be a masterpiece but its fun, silly and Kong is impressive.

Everyone has one childhood movie and this is mine. Bill Forsyth's delightful coming-of-age comedy with Gordon John Sinclair as the hapless Gregory who falls in love with Dorothy, a girl with a passion and skill for football in a time when girls never played. Capturing the awkwardness of teenage life with a quirky sense of fun and some delightfully odd support, Gregory's Girl is a joyful slice of Scottish humour that will always have a special place in my heart.

A surprisingly entertaining second remake of the classic thriller with Robert Powell as Richard Hannay, a man accused of a murder he didn't commit, on the run to Scotland being chased by those who did the crime, due to information that Hannay might have. The impressive cast of British acting talent helps, as does the scenery and the finale with Hannay hanging from the hands of Big Ben is still tense and exciting, even by modern standards. Not as good as the original but better than the first remake with Kenneth More.

Ulzana's Raid (1972)
Routine western given a violent twist from director Robert Aldrich, in which a young cavalry officer is given the job of leading a troop out to find a wanted Native American, only to clash with expert tracker Burt Lancaster. This wordy film has outbreaks of graphic violence and some scenes were cut from the DVD involving horses. Those moments aside, this sits neatly as an accompaniment to other brutal westerns of the time such as Soldier Blue.

Sam Peckinpah's controversial thriller has Dustin Hoffman as a mild-mannered teacher who moves into a Cornish cottage with wife Susan George, who attracts the attention of the locals. When she is assaulted, he refuses to do anything until his house comes under attack after the harbour a fugitive. The brutal sexual attack caught major problems when it was first released and still is problematic but this plays like a modern western with added violence in the only way that Peckinpah could deliver.

Impressive directorial feature debut for Idris Elba in a tough story of D, a young boy in Jamaica who witnesses the murder of his peace-loving brother. Taken under his wing by a local gangster, years later he is sent to London to carve out a new life but the past is set to haunt him. The attention to detail of the periods and the choice of music is outstanding as are the performances, especially from Stephen Graham as a London gangster. Strong accents aside, this is a decent drama of revenge.

Stir Crazy (1980)
Hilarious comedy with Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor as best friends who leave New York for a better life but find themselves accused of bank robbery and thrown in prison. While there, Wilder shows he has a knack for rodeo that could help them escape. The film works because Wilder and Pryor play off each other so well that you can't help but laugh. Director Sidney Poitier gives them room to do what they do best.

A teenage boy's dream as two geeky friends decide to create a woman, never thinking she would be real and in the form of Kelly LeBrock, turning them from losers to heroes. This broad comedy is a favourite of the teen comedies of John Hughes and while not up there with Ferrie Bueller's Day Off or The Breakfast Club, there are enough gags to keep it fun and it zips along at a tremendous pace. Look out for a very young Robert Downey Jr.

Worthy drama with Emma Thompson as a judge, coping with the pressures of the job which is affecting her marriage to Stanley Tucci, while having to deal with a teenager refusing a life-saving blood transfusion due to religious beliefs. Based on Ian McEwan's best-selling novel (he wrote the script) is borders on melodrama while looking a little stagey in places but Thompson's dominating performance is magnificent and it's worth watching just for her.

Disastrous spy comedy with Mila Kunis as a woman whose ex-boyfriend turns out to be a spy and she has to head to Europe with best friend Kate McKinnon to deliver a pen drive. Advertised as a romp for those who like Bridesmaids, this is never funnier than a smirk but the action sequences, while decent enough are very brutal and violent. The question becomes, who, exactly, is this filmed aimed at. It also wastes the talents of Kunis and McKinnon.

A cult favourite as a nurse, desperate for love, falls for a man whose job is conning lonely women out of their money. When she decides to join him, his simple confidence trick turns to something much darker. Filmed in black and white with an experimental style, this is the kind of film that mainstream audiences may struggle with as the narrative jumps around but for those looking for something a little off-kilt, this fits the bill perfectly.

Spike Lee back on form with this excellent drama set in the 70's, with John David Washington as a black cop who decides to prove himself by infiltraing the Ku Klux Klan, using a fellow cop (Adam Driver) to be the physical manifestation. With serious political undertones attacking the state of America now, this does use humour as well as being a serious piece, sometimes the humour is jarring but it doesn't stop this being Lee's best film in a long time.

Peter Sellers' finest hour, playing Chance the Gardner, a simple, quietly spoken man who finds himself in the company of a well connected yet dating businessman who has connections with the President. Mistaken Chance's ideas about gardening for optimistic slices of advice, Chance wins over everyone he meets. Hal Ashby's satire is lifted by Sellers' tremendous performance and it's gentle pacing. Shame this wasn't Sellers' final film as it would have been a crown and a terrific career.

Town on Trial (1957)
50's British thriller in which the murder of a young woman brings detective John Mills to investigate and his methods start to upset the locals. The whole thing is still quintessentially British while wanting to be a little tougher. Mills, as always, is on top form but as maverick as he gets, he is no Dirty Harry. As for whodunnit? You re left guessing till the end and that side of the story is handled extremely well.

The original and still the best, James Cameron's low budget sci-fi thriller may look dated now as far as the effects are concerned but it still manages to grip and the set pieces, particularly the police station attack, is up there with the best action scenes. Schwarzenegger, playing the villain, does it with flair. Most other action films would like to be as good as this. A classic.

Missing person thriller played out on the computer screen of the girl's father, as he starts to uncover clues and finds he didn't really know anything about his own sibling. Starts with a short, Up-style montage that will have you blubbering and then introduces twist and turn that will have you gasping. The ending is a little exposition heavy and the contrived but for a film that uses the premise of watching a computer screen for 104 minutes, it is surprisingly gripping and tense.

Brian De Palma's tough Vietnam drama has Michael J. Fox as a soldier assigned under bullish Sean Penn, who kidnaps a Vietnamese girl in order to rape her while on patrol. This is possibly DePalma's most straight-forward film, lacking any of his usual cinematic flairs, instead of telling this horrific tale without anything flashy. The performances, especially from Fox and Penn are exceptional. A hard film to watch and one of the underrated Vietnam dramas that came out of the 80's.

Disney musical which mixes live action with animation, as a young boy moves into a coastal town with his pet dragon, Elliott. Causing all kinds of trouble, the dragon becomes the interest of an unsavoury conman. While the cast gives it plenty of welly, the songs are unmemorable and the animation isn't as exciting as Mary Poppins or Bedknobs and Broomsticks. The recent remake was much more of a touching tale.

A charming reinvention of the A.A.Milne stories with Ewan McGregor as an older Christopher Robin, who has forgotten childhood things and replaced them by seriousness and stress of work, which is slowly pushing his wife and daughter away, until Winnie The Pooh arrives needing his help. With incredible CGI creations of the friends from the Hundred Acre Woods, this is aimed more at adults who loved the stories and who have forgotten what its like to be a child.

What starts off as an interesting premise: commuter is chosen to try and find the one person on a train who doesn't belong for a bag full of money, soon turns into the usual Liam Neeson punching people in the face. Not one of the star's best efforts and you do wish he would get back to doing proper acting but this is a routine action thriller with a couple of half decent set pieces that do get more ludicrous as it goes on.

Remake of the 1972 Neil Simon comedy with Ben Stiller as a man who gets married to Marlin Ackerman but while on honeymoons, decides that she may not be the woman of his dreams. The same team behind Dumb and Dumber take a simple rom-com and turn it on its head with a mix of straight comedy and gross-out. Not a comedy masterpiece but enough gags that makes it watchable and not as painful as you'd expect.

Fairly forgettable YA dystopian adventure where children have developed powers that make them dangerous to adults, as a group try to find sanctuary which isn't what they hoped for. This would have been an interesting concept if it hadn't have come long after the YA type movies had died. It feels very old-fashioned and behind the times, especially with the superhero movies ruling. Maybe would have made an interesting TV series on Netflix but fails as a cinematic experience.

The Festival (2018)
From the makers of The Inbetweeners comes a film not too dissimilar from the hit TV series, as Joe Thomas stars as Nick, a man dumped on his graduation who is dragged to a music festival. Full of jokes about drugs, sex and bodily functions, the film works best when it isn't trying to be rude and Thomas makes Nick a likeable anti-hero. Not as funny as the Inbetweeners but it will do.

One of Norman Wisdom's finest films, playing a man who dreams of being a policeman like his father who has to go undercover as an Italian hairdresser. Brimming with slapstick comedy, it has some hilarious moments, including a chase through the streets for hundreds of police officers. Wisdom is as charming as ever although the film is almost stolen from him by a very funny performance from David Lodge. A little gem.

Based on true events, Ridley Scott's war drama is a relentlessly brutal tale of survival, as a routine raid goes badly wrong as the soldiers have to protect a fallen helicopter. There is a good movie hidden away here but director Richard Rush decided to go for cheap thrills, an erotic and violent thriller that is neither sexy or exciting. Bruce Willis plays a psychiatrist forced to leave New York after a tragedy to go to his friend's in LA, soon becoming involved in finding the murderer of his friend, while having an affair with mysterious Rose (Jean March). Starts out with promise but turns into a real stinker with a longing to be as good as Hitchcock. It's not.

Dated comedy with Harry H. Corbett as a barge worker, travelling up and down the English canals, with women at every lock house. When he gets one of the girls pregnant and her father is very overprotective, he has to change his ways. The cast of supporting actors is made up of the good and the great of British comedy at that period, although the humour maybe slightly of its time, it passed a lazy Sunday afternoon nicely.

A rare entry from Ealing Studios to go into horror and they have a classic on their hands. A man arrives at a house and claims he has been there in his dreams and knows all the people there, even though they have never met. A series of paranormal stories are told with the famous Michael Redgrave possession from his ventriloquist dummy. A thoroughly thrilling series of stories that end with a brilliant twist. Highly recommended.

A real surprise. Based on the TV animation, this tale of how the Teen Titans want to break into movies but are regarded as jokes is hilarious. A relentless array of gags from the knowing to the ridiculous, it's as funny as Captain Underpants and, dare I say it, better than Incredibles 2. The animation may be basic but the sense of fun and gag-levels make up for it. A film I wasn't expecting much from but came out a huge fan.

This should have been the fun, bonkers blockbuster of the Summer. Instead, this is a damp squib of a film about a megalodon escapes from a hidden undersea world to cause havoc and only Jason Statham can stop. Sci-Fi adventure with Charlton Heston as the only man alive on Earth, battling humans who have been affected by a plague he had something to do with. While the streets are deserted during the day, they come out at night until he discovers that he is not alone. Based on the novel by Richard Matheson, this half decent film suffers from not dating too well, although this does have an inter-racial relationship which was very ahead of its time. Perfectly fine but has lost some of its punch now.

Adventure with David Niven as a coward and a liar who is hired to be an English teacher to an Asian ambassador. When the pair are kidnapped, the teacher must become everything that he has made-up. For an adventure film, this is fairly slow moving, although you can see the British filmmakers want to cash in on the martial arts craze. Niven, however, holds his own, while the boy is absolutely terrible. Fine for a disposable, nothing else to watch but hardly worth tracking down.
