The historical parts suck, I don't like the Forrest Gump type of alternative history approach at all. They felt pretty pointless and far too long, detracting a whole lot from the experience. It could've been a decent comedy.

At this point I'm pretty certain Wes Anderson isn't just my cup of tea. Well, the set decorations and overall visual style have always been brilliant: his films work best as eye-candy for me. But when it comes to the script and humor, I don't feel the guy's work.

Also - interestingly - I think something like Moonrise Kingdom could be a better kids' movie from Anderson's oeuvre than this. Despite being animated, this feels very much written for adult audiences to enjoy. I doubt many children would understand the jokes here or find them all that funny.

One of those rare, abstract films that have a mysteriously intense effect on me which I struggle to understand. Amazing images and a wonderful musical score. One of the best films of the decade - I wonder why no film festival in Helsinki showed it this autumn.

One of those 1960s art films that feel completely detached to me as they seem to belong in an entirely different culture than mine. Here, some woman gets to work as a chambermaid in the country and ends up witnessing a series of eccentric behavior, sexual harassment and right-wing bigotry. Not much about it makes me care at all but good direction, some funny moments and cool ending make me give it a pretty generous 2.5.

A few phenomenal scenes (Boris' death and especially the beautiful air-raid/piano one) and overall excellent camera work do not unfortunately render a drab story a very enjoyable film.

Far better than the first part. This time the action scenes are actually pretty thrilling at best (compared to the bafflingly lazy sword fight between Obi-wan and Darth Vader in the first part, for example). It's also much better paced and feels like a more cohesive film.

The visual style and the manner of acting reminds me of the recent Greek films such as Dogtooth but, unfortunately, She Monkeys does not do anything interesting with this style. The story is pretty bland and the expressionless acting makes it even a bit annoying.

Lots of silly fun but I'd appreciate the thought experiment more if the director chose to spend his energy to getting most out of the actors and their delivery of lines such as "how many Hugh and Amirs are wandering out there", instead of shaking the camera like a Polaroid picture.

Very entertaining zeitgeist-capturing documentary shot all around Finland in the beginning of the 1970s. The cringe-worthy leftist political songs on the soundtrack (M.A. Numminen being the only exception as he's just awesome) made it kind of jarring; listening to the actual people talk is, after all, a lot more interesting than basically anything Rauli "Badding" Somerjoki ever did.

I especially loved the interviews with bums and drunkards and the hilarious one with a theatre actor.

Corny politics, dullish story and some lousy overacting aside (yes, I do know it's expressionism but still), it's obviously a good film with great editing, jaw-dropping set design and brilliant use of lights and shadows. Fritz Lang did better films with same skills, though.

A magnificently written, visually gorgeous film that despite its 190-minute runtime feels like it flies by. Thanks to the meditative, immaculate pacing and carefully composed conversational scenes that are always interesting. I've never seen a film capture the feel of old Russian literature so lively and exquisitely. Perhaps even more catharsis in a few selected moments would've made this an absolute masterpiece.

Pretty much what its trailer set it out to be: a very basic "finding one's faith" story with extremely beautiful camera work. For once, a modern film puts black and white images and 4:3 aspect ratio to good use: every shot is composed with beautiful precision. Love the Dreyer-esque, simplified decor as well.

But yeah, the story is pretty predictable - even distractingly so. Unfortunate for such a visual masterpiece.

Blind (2014)

DIRECTED BY Eskil Vogt

Beautifully shot, cleverly edited drama about a woman who's become blind and is afraid to venture outside her apartment, instead imagining what kinds of goings-on her husband might be having that she's not able to see. From the cinematographer of Dogtooth and screenwriter of Oslo, 31. august (one of my favorite films of the decade) I could expect a gorgeous film - what Blind mostly is. I was just kind of disappointed with the way the characters of Ingrid's book were so over-the-top as I initially found Elin and Einar the most interesting characters here.

Good drama, nevertheless, and I'm interested in what the director Eskil Vogt might still have in him.

Force Majeure (2014)
21.09.
Festival, 1st viewing
DIRECTED BY Ruben Östlund

After seeing Östlund's very promising previous two films and reading some exciting things (a huge simulated avalanche caught on film!) about Force Majeure, AKA Turist, it ended up being probably one of my most expected films of this year's Love & Anarchy film festival.

To my delight, it succeeded to surpass my expectations. Firstly, Turist is one of the funniest films I've seen in theater: quite a feat for what is basically a marriage drama. Familiarly to Östlund's style, Turist makes the viewer witness painfully awkward moments that are simultaneously side-splittingly hilarious. Although he uses his brand of static shots to establish these moments of inescapable awkwardness, the characters do not feel distant here. After all, the film revolves around a family's traumatizing experience involving the said avalanche. Östlund seems to explore a new, more psychological territory here - yet manages to stay faithful to his original style.

Even without the interesting family drama, the film is a treat on a purely aesthetic level. The Alps make a wonderful setting, feeling dangerous and romantic at the same time. Also love the little visual jokes abound. Very close to five stars but I need to see it again.

Festen at a class reunion turns into a one-of-a-kind meta-film and exploration of school bullying, subjective perception, guilt and former bullies' defence mechanisms. An absolutely brilliant concept with fascinating observations about the hardships of coming to terms with one's shameful past.

You have some excellent thoughts here. I've just watched "42nd Street" and I must say that your comment describes my feelings exatcly. I was expecting similar quality as "Gold Diggers" or "Footlight Parade", but sadly, it wasn't as interesting. Same about "Grand Budapest Hotel", surprisingly, it didn't got me laughing once, too. I thought it was all about the visuals.
Anyway, it's a great list, keep writing the comments, they're really fun to read.
