I can´t decide which one I like better, this or The Force Awakens. While this one is slightly better on the writing side, TFA was simply more enjoyable. That being said, Rogue One is a great side-story to the Star Wars saga, with great action scenes, a couple of good new characters and fun easter eggs for the fans thrown in for good measure. Even though the story doesn´t have as much interesting twists as Star Wars movies usually do, it still does its job fantastically as a prequel to A New Hope. Ever since Disney bought Star Wars, I can safely say that the Force is strong with them again.

It´s no Deadpool, but it´s still a very serviceable addition to the Marvel lineup. Cumberbatch and Mikkelsen are great as always, the writing has a couple of really funny bits and the mystical elements are an interesting change of pace in the Marvel universe. Some plotholes and pointless moments drag the film a bit down at times, but nothing really ruins the experience either. Would´ve expected something more from this, but still overall satisfying. Also, great Stan Lee cameo as always.

It´s not groundbreaking in really anything, but for a traditional western, it´s pretty darn good. The actors do a good job in their archetypal, yet still enjoyable roles, and when the action gets intense, it really gets intense. The humor and camaraderie between the characters also has enough kick to keep it up. Sure, it has those predictable moments near the end (not going to spoil), but the story still kept me invested more than enough throughout the running time. Besides, it´s basically a western version of The Seven Samurai, what can go wrong with that?

Jason Bourne (2016)
I´ve seen the entire Bourne saga up to this point and where this ranks, I´d say it´s better than the previous entry, but not as solid as the three first movies. The action is still as good as it is in the entire series, and the story brings in a lot of interesting elements both new and old. However, the actual story of the film does take too long to get going, as well as establishing the motivations of the characters, some of which seem to change rather suddenly. Still, the story gets better as the film progresses, leading up to a satisfying finale. Not the best summer blockbuster out there, but still worth at least one viewing. Seeing this especially with the new enhanced sound systems at my local cinema was neat too.

Isn´t it strange that this is considered a Captain America movie, even though the events of this movie involve all of the Avengers? Like most of the MCU films, this has the same amount of action, humor and charismatic actors pulling off these iconic characters. However, this film feels like it starts off the big conflict between the heroes a bit too late in the film, as the first half uses too much time to build it up. The civil war itself is strong and uses its dramatic potential well, but it could´ve focused more on the other Avengers members than just the Captain and Iron Man. This is right up there with Age of Ultron: a solid movie and a worthy entry in the series, but still a bit inferior to its precedessors. Still, well worth watching for any Marvel fan or fan of action movies in general.

Zootopia (2016)
Being an old-fashioned animation geek, I wasn´t that impressed by the likes of Tangled or Frozen, but Zootopia (or Zootropolis here in Europe) really took me by surprise in a good way. This film takes one of the most classic tropes in animation (animals acting like people) and uses it to create a fascinating world that feels both timeless and modern at the same time. With its two endearing lead characters, excellent animation, a balance of both funny and heartfelt moments and a bit of biting social commentary, this is one of Disney´s strongest titles since the 90s. A great movie for both children and adults alike.

Deadpool (2016)
With the Marvel Cinematic Universe doing great at the superhero movies, one didn´t expect much from Fox since most of their attempts vary from passable (most of the X-Men movies) to downright abysmal (Fant4stic). But this really proved that they did put their best effort at the game here. Deadpool is one of the raunchiest superheroes that has ever been created, and Ryan Reynolds didn´t disappoint in the role. The humor here is brilliant, varying from self-irony to genius fourth wall gags and situational comedy, most of which hit bullseye. It may not be the most groundbreaking superhero movie, but it is definitely one of the funniest ones. Good to see that this cult figure-esque character got the movie he deserved.

We don´t see nature documentaries that often on the big screen and as a proud Finnish man, I´m glad that our country is able to produce high-quality documentaries that even rival films like March of the Penguins. Like with its precedessor Tale of a Forest, this contains wonderful cinematography in the middle of the natural beauty of my homeland. Combine that with the gorgeous music and narration with allusions to Finnish mythology, and you´ve got a worthwhile experience.

The Revenant (2015)
Leonardo DiCaprio has gotten better and better as an actor as years have passed, and it definitely shows here. It´s great that these grittier western movies are making a comeback, and this is one of the best alongside The Salvation. Both DiCaprio and Hardy are excellent (even though Hardy still sounds too much same as he did as Bane), the atmosphere is wonderful, the action brutally intense and the landscapes look gorgeous on the big screen. The story itself is a very classic tale of revenge like in most westerns, but delivered with such a punch that keeps the viewer at the edge of the seat. Definitely deserved the Oscars it got.

Oh was I expecting a lot from this movie. Being a western by Quentin Tarantino using old-fashioned cinematography and the great Ennio Morricone as a composer, this looked like it could be a masterpiece. But what this film turned out to be was a charmlessly pale imitation of earlier Tarantino films without the wit or panache. The film drags on and on so long that even the passable actors or the colorful Tarantino-style dialogue can´t save it from boredom, and less said about the distasteful misogynist element the better. Pulp Fiction or Inglorious Bastards this aint.

I watch a lot of stuff on DVD/Blu-Ray or on television, but the big screen to me is still the best way to watch movies. Here´s what I´ve went to see so far this year.
