It took me by surprise how much I liked this movie. Tis no acid trip though many people refer to it as such due to the scene towards the end where Dr. Dave Bowman is traveling through the far reaches of space. Per Wikipedia:

"At Jupiter, Bowman leaves Discovery One in an EVA pod and finds another monolith in orbit around the planet. Approaching it, the pod is suddenly pulled into a tunnel of colored light,[25] and a disoriented and terrified Bowman finds himself racing at great speed across vast distances of space, viewing bizarre cosmological phenomena and strange alien landscapes of unusual colors."

Those "bizarre cosmological phenomena and strange alien landscapes of unusual colors" did a GREAT job to me of conveying a sense of alienness to the viewer, in a sense by giving the viewer what we'd imagine the view from alien eyes to be.

Also, I loved the computer Hal's role. In a way he summed up so much about us human beings with just the tone of his voice and his matter of fact points. The sequel film 2010: The Year We Make Contact does Hal great justice in explaining why Hal did what he did - though I'm unsure if Kubrick meant for anyone to be told how to interpret Hal's actions.

Since I love this film so much, I purchased a DVD copy for myself. There is an additional DVD of the movie in the packet that includes a narration by Keir Dullea and Gary Lockwood. Lockwood mentions somewhere in the narration talking to someone who just didn't get the film - or something along the lines of not seeing its worth. Lockwood said he decided right away that he and the guy had nothing to say to one another beyond that. AND that is what I say!

Poltergeist (1982)
So when I was little, there were purportedly ghosts in one of the many houses we migrated to. Still don't know to this day if my mother and grandmother were teasing me and my sister with what they told us as I never saw anything with my own eyes, but I kind of don't think they were. So, me and my sister were definitely able to relate to this one when it came out.

300 (2006)
Loved that, per Wikipedia, "it was filmed mostly with a super-imposition chroma key technique, to help replicate the imagery of the original comic book". Loved this feature and the theme of the strong Spartan will...and Gerard Butler :)

AFI's list of top 10 musicals:

SINGIN' IN THE RAIN
WESTSIDE STORY
THE WIZARD OF OZ
THE SOUND OF MUSIC
CABARET
MARY POPPINS
A STAR IS BORN
MY FAIR LADY
AN AMERICAN IN PARIS
MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS

but I'd like to nudge FIDDLER ON THE ROOF somewhere in here. This would probably be my list:

THE WIZARD OF OZ
FIDDLER ON THE ROOF
ANNIE
SOUND OF MUSIC
GREASE
SINGIN' IN THE RAIN
AN AMERICAN IN PARIS
WESTSIDE STORY
ETC.

Can't believe I loved this technologically outdated film so much. Can't believe how frightening the monsters were regardless of the limited special effects technology.

Loved these lines:

“I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time... like tears in rain... Time to die.”

I think the setting of this film stands out to me - that is the railroad adventure between Marietta, GA and Chattanooga, TN - both familiar territory for me.

I remember, as a child, loving the unique half animation/half real aspect of this movie. This was new then, but pretty outdated now. Yet I still love it and its tenderness and music still makes me cry.

These movies are my favorites for various reasons. The majority are from the AFI list I've been watching recently and others are those I may've watched long, long ago, but that have left a powerful impression on me for one reason or another.
