A list of movies based directly, or directly inspired, by real life serial killers. For instance, none of the killers in "Silence of the Lambs" is "real" but Jame Gumb was based on 4 real life serial killers: Ed Gein (Gein was also the inspiration for Leatherface in "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" and apparently, also for Norman Bates (although I don't see how Bates' reflects Gein specifically so that movie will not be added). Gumb was also based on Gary Heidnek, Ted Bundy and Edmund Kemper. Movies, obviously, based on real-life events featuring a serial killer will also be added, but so will some "fictional" movies if the main character was heavily based on a real life killer.
