The Wrong Man (1956)

/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\

Possibly, the most unusual Hitchcock's film that tells a story of a jazz musician and a good family man Manny, who appears to be wrongly convicted for an armed robbery. The fight for freedom goes painfully slow, Manny's wife couldn't handle it and falls into a deep fatalistic depression. The step-by-step manner of narrative feels more like a documentary rather than a fiction and it makes the situation look even more absurd.

Kafkian motives: man vs the system, oppression, bureaucracy, despairity.

In this masterpiece of Bergman, two sisters: Anna and Ester are travelling through unnamed foreign country along with Anna's little son - Johan. Ester is a very sick woman with a progressive tumor. Because of that, they have to stay for some time in an almost empty, luxurious hotel in the middle of a big city. The relationships between two sisters are very tense due to a mutual misunderstandings which have led to the whole bouquet of negative emotions that have been accumulating throughout many years. But, actually, "the kafkian" atmosphere lies on the shoulders of Johan who sees the strange world of grown-ups in a dream-like perspective.

The Cremator (1969)

Highly depressing and grim piece from Czechoslovakia - Kafka's homeland. Diligent, educated and overall likeable person mr. Kopfrkingl works as a head-cremator. He has a nice house, lovely family and he approaches his peculiar job in a very serious and creative way, regarding a crematorium as a some kind of a temple that frees people souls through fire. Later on, as nazi's Germany starts to rise, mr. Kopfrkingl slowly becomes an important man not only at his workplace, but in the whole structure of the Third Reich.

An Italian police officer called "The Doctor" commits a murder and then scatters all over the place evidences against himself. Investigation goes absurd when the police totally ignores any connections between higher-standing officer and the important clues. Above all, the more "The Doctor" tries to point justice at himself, the more reluctant everyone else becomes in this disturbing case. The film ends with a quote from "The Trial" by Kafka, so I think it is one of the most perfect examples of "The Kafkian" cinema.

Kafkian motives: absurd, man vs the system, bureaucracy.

Barton Fink (1991)

/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\

On the surface, it is a classic example of a story about an honest writer who gets in a cruel world of Hollywood's commercialism and its disregard for the human soul. But what makes this film click is an amazing, surrealistic atmosphere of loneliness inside this almost dark fantasy-like environments. The Hotel in which Barton Fink stays has a nature of a living thing that breaths with drafts and the characters that surround the protagonist look either confused, deranged, exaggeratedly enthusiastic or just plain crazy.

This is not a list of movies that based directly on Franz Kafka's works but surely, one way or another, inspired by them.
