Please note: I have stopped updating the lists of actors and directors as you can finally sort them by worldwide gross on Box Office Mojo directly. what criteria is this? your own personal most successful? from a list? from top box office sales?
Posted: 8 years, 3 months ago at Apr 17 18:52
It's the box office sales worldwide. my source is www.boxofficemojo.com - look there to see the full (and up-to-date) list! :-)
Posted: 6 years, 10 months ago at Oct 4 18:55
You should convert the dollars to the same standard. 1$ back in the 70's was worth a lot more than 1$ now. Convert the revenue into 2009 dollars.
That's why gone with the wind is always at the top of those lists. :D
Posted: 6 years, 9 months ago at Oct 6 11:33
Hello Steerpike,
I agree that with some points - This list doesn't say anything about how many people watched the movies in cinema or how much the revenue of the movies was worth at the time.

But on the other hand - how can I convert the gross? I need the mean ticket prices for each year. Then I need to calculate the gross for every single movie. The question is: is it worth it? It is a lot of work.

And what about the movies that are not on this list? There are a lot of movies that would be in this list if I would convert the grosses. For example Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937). Its converted gross would be 782,620,000 $, but it is not in this list because its "real" gross was only 184,925,486 $. And there are many others like this. So I would not be able to create a complete list.

I hope you can understand my problems...
Posted: 6 years, 7 months ago at Dec 26 18:26
Wow. It wasn't until #49 until the list hit a movie that I would watch again and until #74 that the list hit a movie I'd call "really good". Me and popularity don't seem to mix.

It's interesting to have the list for reference.

Great list!
Posted: 1 year, 8 months ago at Nov 27 17:45
Interesting list, but I have to agree with some of the remarks that were made in other comments. First off, "highest grossing" doesn't always translate to "most successful". There is more to "success" than a brilliant box office. Secondly, the list mostly includes new movies, because ticket prices go up! But a dollar now is not the same as a dollar in the Thirties. So, your list leaves out many very successful, high-grossing films that were made in the past. I'd like better a list adjusted for inflation, like Prelude did in his own http://www.listal.com/list/top-box-office-hits

Here you go: http://www.boxofficemojo.com/alltime/adjusted.htm the REAL all-time box office with both Adjusted Gross and Unadjusted Gross:

This is so far I think the oldest list I have seen in Listal.
Posted: 4 months, 3 weeks ago at Mar 6 17:34
@The O.P. I totally: this list strongly favours new movies. Especially now with the 3D-surcharge you can't really compare it - even the comparing the performance of new movies like e.g. Avatar and The Dark Knight is quite impossible because of that. And other factors like awards, DVD sales etc. are not even included at all.

Unfortunately BOM only offered the adjusted ranking to members only when I started making this list - that's why it is like it is. A better approach in general would be to compare the attendance figures of the movies. But I don't know where you could get these.

So altogether, this list is quite biased - it disfavours old movies (like Gone With the Wind) and doesn't include other movies that became successful only after their run in the cinemas (like Donnie Darko). But it's still very popular here on listal nontheless, that's why I keep on updating it from time to time. And to be fair, it also makes it quite obvious why there are so many uninspired sequels and remakes nowadays: they bring in a lot of money!
