1. The Matrix (1999)
For me, The Matrix is the most overrated film ever made!

Why? Because everyone just remembers this film for the effects! I guess people can say the same thing about Avatar but I just didn't feel the complete attraction to this at all. Also, the incredibly annoying Keanu Reeves! He just cannot act at all! Yeah, it is a fairly decent film but there's no way that it is one of the best films of all time or even one of the best science-fiction films for that matter.

4. The Dark Knight Rises (2012)
I may get a lot of backlash by adding The Dark Knight Rises into this list. For starters, it is not on the same level as The Dark Knight at all, the story was quite a muddle at times and it's annoying when you can hardly understand a single word that the villain is even saying. However, it is just an enjoyable Batman film, not the masterpiece that it should have been.

5. WALL·E (2008)
"The best Pixar many critics have said"?! It is a great film indeed but doesn't attract all ages like Toy Story trilogy, Finding Nemo, Ratatouille, Up, Monsters Inc. etc because I don't think it really had the charm for all viewers. I think perhaps this is more for adults than kids. It's not one of Pixar's best but I still really liked it.

6. The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
Despite it's a great film, I can't fully understand why this is IMDB's number 1 film. There are more films that deliver a better message, deliver better performances and film and write it better. I sort of think the same with The Godfather even though that's a close favourite of mine.

8. The Notebook (2004)
"The Titanic of the 00s!" I kept being told and it's just another romantic film and people do go over the top with a lot of romantic films.

9. Crash (2004)
This is the most astounding Best Picture winner in the history of the Academy!
It is a good film but it really didn't deserve what it got. Nobody was expecting this to win. Brokeback Mountain was the favourite to win and should've won. As far as I'm concerned, the Academy may not be racist but they are homophobic.

10. The Hurt Locker (2008)
I did really like it and is one of the best films of 2009 but seriously, let's face it: this wasn't an individual film by itself and neither was the outcome of how people thought of it. For me, it didn't deserve Best Picture because it really was more of a tribute to the troops in the Iraq war rather than a film thought up inside someone's head and I think Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds deserved it more because that's more talent!

12. The Twilight Saga: New Moon (2009)
Representing the whole series...

The Twilight series is perhaps not overrated but it certainly is overhyped. To cut it short, the two leading actor's "bodies" and the girls watching the films instantly get sexually aroused by them and they just can't act. End of!

List of the films that I think the public have gone a bit over the top about whether it's critically or just non-critics who are just fans.
I love most of these films but admittedly there is one over-hyped thing about every film in the list.

I remember really liking "Shakespeare in Love". So, I thought I would re-watch it... I think I lasted about 15min before I thought "What is this offensive garbage I'm watching???" and had to turn it off :P

Lol :P
Acting was very good from all of them but Cate Blanchett should've won Best Leading Actress in Elizabeth instead of Gwyneth Paltrow.

I agree strongly with Shawshank being on here. It is only number 1 on IMDB because so many people have seen it and rated it highly. The reason it is in a lot of people's top 10 aswell is because it is one of the first films people watch when they get into watching movies and it always remains a close favourite. Although I have given it 5 stars, I would never put it in my top 10, not even in my top 50.

I agree that most of these are over-hyped and waay over-rated, but some of these movies I LOVE!!! 1st Pirates of the Carribean was hilarious! The Matrix was Amazing and the Hurt Locker, though not a favorite of mine was much better than some other war movies I've seen.
But Twilight is the most over-hyped, over-rated, undeserving shit that I have ever seen. And believe you me, I've seen some awful ones!

some of the films in this list are my favourites....but i'm gonna vote :)

Agree all those movies but not Fight Club. I'ts nice too see that someone else think that movies like Goodfellas, The Dark Knight and Scarface are overrated / overhyped. Titanic is good too, but not eleven Oscars worthy. But eas question arises as to this reading list; Where are Lords of the Rings and Batman Begins?

Pirates are real good movies, whole serie.

OMG Except for Hsm and Twilight.....All these are real good movies.....How Dare YOU!
Posted: 3 years, 12 months ago at Sep 5 14:36
lol. I'm not saying they're all bad. My ratings of most of them are usually 3.5 plus. As I said in the list info (probably didn't read it) that I have written a couple of reasons why the public have over-reacted with a film and I never said the films were crap except Twilight, High School Musical, Transformers 2 and Bridget Jones's Diary.

I totally dig your comment on Titanic "The public are more attracted to the love between fictional characters Rose and Jack than the disaster itself." Totally agree with you !!! But why did you rated it 10 then ?!?
Posted: 3 years, 11 months ago at Sep 9 20:43
Because they couldn't have thought of a stronger story.

Honestly, my favorite aspect of 'Titanic' was indeed the romance between Rose and Jack. The disaster doesn't come until the end of the film, thus the main interest is obviously going to be the love story. Anyway, I really like all aspects of 'Titanic' and don't find it overrated at all.

To be straight-forward with you, you really shouldn't include films you've given five stars on this list. Or any of your faves. On to the topic at hand, I do agree with some of these, but not many. Nice list nonetheless.

matrix (the first one) is a much deeper movie tan it seems. it takes aspects of filosophy and makes a great adaptation of the allegory of the cave, while also gives a warning about human blind ambition and dependence on technology.
matrix reloded and revolution were very bad sequels, that relied much more in the action sequences and the special effects. animatrix, on the other, makes it great as a prequel.

Pulp Fiction

Target audience of Wall-E is not children. And just because a movie is created as an animation, it doesn't mean it's a film for children.

Yet, it is a good list. I think Taxi Driver also deserves a place in here.
