That is one eclectic group of money shots you collected -
my only quibble is Taxi Driver -
I think the iconic shot is the 'you talkin to me' scene -
Great list.
Nice collection of images. So many that I was waiting to see here, only to scroll down and find them included!
Gotta say though, I had the exact same reaction as phillydude regarding Taxi Driver.
If you're taking suggestions I recommend:
The Ring: Girl climbing out of TV set.
Edward Scissorhands: The Edward/Winona Ryder hug
A Nightmare on Elm Street: Mid/long shot of Freddy silhouette.
The Birds: Phone booth, or dead man missing eyeball shot
The Searchers: shot of John Wayne outside the door frame.
The 400 Blows: chainlink fence shot, or final beach shot.
Again, not sure if your adding to this list, or trying to narrow it down to an even 100. But those come to mind.
120 days is NOT part of the iconic images-no one has seen it!! Neither is 12 angry men, persona, night of the Hunter, Omen, stalker, Truman show, Old boy or funny games. Great films but NOT as legendary as what is on the list-most have not seen nor heard of them-even in film stills. GREAT JOB OTHERWISE!! TRULY! Great list!
@Xanadon't of 'course i accept suggestions and i include them soon.Taxi driver i believe that 'Are you talking to me' is a classic scene not an icon image.
@SuperAmanda ty very much but i totally disagree with you
especially with 'Night of The Hunter' 'Salo' 'Omen' and 'Truman Show'.All these films are totally legendary and their icons classic.
I hear what SuperAmanda is saying, though I'd argue with 12 Angry Men (Which, btw, last I checked, is leading listal's Best Movie of the 50's list). And Oldboy has upward of 1000 people who have 'watched' it on this site as well. 1576 at the moment, to be exact-- over twice the number that have seen King Kong, M, or 8 1/2. Don't think anyone could possibly argue with their inclusion. No, Oldboy is a contemporary classic, and becoming a cross-cultural reference point around the globe.
OMG I LOVE this list! I'm a movie buff too so I can relate to this list.
Btw what about this scene from The Shining where Danny in his bicycle met the dead twin girls (come play with us, Danny, forever and ever and ever....)? I think that's almost as iconic as the Jack Nicholson scene when he said, "here's Jonny!"
And the scene from The Exorcist when the possessed Reagan vomited a gooey green slime after Father Karras tried to exorcise her. Is that considered iconic too?
Can the movie Snow White and Fantasia (both by Disney) considered iconic? I know that Snow White was the first full-length cel-animated feature in motion picture history, as well as the first animated feature film produced in America, and the first produced in full color; meanwhile Fantasia seems to always appear in any best movies list.
And what about Avatar? Some people may find the movie overrated but you cannot deny that it has some innovative visual effects and animation technology in it; and thanks to the movie, it started the 3D trend which has (unfortunately) pretty much affected most Hollywood releases recently.
Btw I don't know if these two movies are considered iconic or not. Both are by my fave actress, Elizabeth Taylor:
- "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf" : my fave scene is the last one when Richard Burton asked Taylor, "who's afraid of Virginia Woolf?" and Taylor replied, "I am, George, I am..."
- "Cleopatra" : the movie was a flop but Liz couldn't look any prettier there and some of the scenes are memorable just because she was there.
Oh and another one is "The Shawshank Redemption". I love that movie even better than Forrest Gump and Pulp Fiction (whom were also nominated for Best Picture Oscar the year they were first released), but I don't know about its "iconic" status.
And what about Groundhog Day starring Bill Murray and Andie McDowell?
Btw do you think The Social Network can go down in history as one of the most iconic and innovative movies of our generation?
I know that the movie is still quite relatively recent so I suppose it's a bit too early to put the "icon" label on it but I just love how many movie-goers were pissed off because it lost to The King's Speech as Best Picture Oscar this year and how everybody second Steven Spielberg's opening speech before announcing the Best Picture winner regarding prior movies that didn't win Best Picture yet went on to achieve icon/legend status such as Citizen Kane, Raging Bull, Star Wars and Goodfellas. I remember it sparked quite a debate among movie buffs in many movie websites such as IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes.
one of the best lists i've seen...oh, and amanda..12 angry men, no one has seen or heard of it, so it doesn't belong?? i can't disagree more it's one of the best movies ever. period...the only movies i thought of that weren't included were cuckoos nest (maybe a picture of mcmurphy spraying people w/ the hose), planet of the apes (statue of liberty on the beach), and princess bride (my name is inigo montoya, you killed my father, prepare to die) i get goose bumps just thinking about that scene..
the ariadnes dream in Inception, the shoot in Seven, Samara coming out from the tv in The ring, maybe one of Nightmare on elm street,"they coming to get barbara" from Night of the living dead, the little girl in schindle´s list, one from requiem for a dream, ladri di bici,
I like so much this list. It's what I like to do when I see new movies. Extracting a frame to condensate the movie with. I started a tumblr just to do this: http://cinevisioni.tumblr.com/
You've nailed it for most of them. Pardon me if I come across as imposing, but I really do believe it's unthinkable for an iconic image list to leave out two of these special captures:
120 days is NOT part of the iconic images-no one has seen it!! Neither is 12 angry men, persona, night of the Hunter, Omen, stalker, Truman show, Old boy or funny games. Is this, *gasp* *sputter*, is this really true? Amanda, 12 Angry Men not a legendary film? No-one has heard of it? Have you finally flipped?
No one's seen or heard of Twelve Angry Men? That's news to me. If you don't like Twelve Angry Men, how about Fonda and Katherine Hepburn in "On Golden Pond?" Fonda in his epiphany moment in "Mr. Roberts"? As Tom Joad in Grapes of Wrath? Or on the phone with the Soviet president in "Fail-Safe"?
I think there are better images of some of the movies listed here. Star Wars Ep 5 should show the raised swords of Luke and Vader. The screen image of Truman laying in bed. And no images from Raiders of the Lost Ark or Goodfellas?
Overall, this is a great list and very thorough. Kudos!
great list but dr strangelove when he is riding on the bomb is one of the best.
the second picture in oldboy actually was never in the film, and on brazil you could put the picture of the torturer wearing the baby face... also kevin spacey lighting his cigar or cigarette in the usual suspects. and the buildings falling in fight club. great list, but u missed a lot of films
