If there ever was a movie version of Metal Gear Solid, it would most likely be something like Patlabor 2. Lot's of complicated philosophical monologue, heavy atmosphere and suspense, very little action and lots of real political issues mixed with futuristic science fiction and mechas.

There was once a rumor that Patlabor and Metal Gear exist in the same universe, but the theory was eventually debunked.

Angel's Egg (1985)
Angel's Egg has literally no plot. There's a little girl with an angel's egg and then there's a young man who breaks the egg. That's it.

The mystical atmosphere and the beautiful art design make this movie one of Oshii's best films, in my eyes at least. I loved every second of it.

Kerberos vol 3. Another prequel. Chronologically the first part of the saga.

This one tells the story of the fall of Kerberos elite forces. This one also reveals the meaning behind the red hooded woman from the previous films.

The best of the three.

Kerberos vol 2, prequel to The Red Spectacles.

This time it's a existential road movie where a former Kerberos soldier is on a mission to find his former master from the previous film. The awesome action scene at the end is one of the single best scenes Oshii has ever done, in my opinion at least.

It happens that the studio executives were so pleased with Only You that they gave Mamoru Oshii more liberties to do whatever he wanted with this one. And the result is just what you could expect from the director: lots of philosophical mumbo jumbo, high quality animation and surreal imagery. You don't even need to know the original series that well to enjoy this one. Some call it weird, I call it perfect fun.

Kerberos vol 1.

Imagine Dogville done film noir and directed by David Lynch. My words wouldn't do this one justice, so I won't even try to explain what it's like. If you really want to understand the big picture of the director's entire career you must see this film and the whole Kerberos saga.

Nowhere Girl (2015)
Surprisingly this is actually quite enjoyable little film. It's a simple story about some bullied art student who flips at the end and blows some shit up. Very likable compared to some of the previous films by Mamoru Oshii.

Mamoru Oshii didn't have much to say with this one. Only You was his debut feature and done under the surveillance of some studio executives. In case you're a huge fan of the original series you might like it. Personally I think it's kind of meh.

Garm Wars is just a lame film. It has some flashy effects and nice visuals here and there but the story just doesn't work that well. The characters themselves were just boring and the weird sounding names and terms very confusing. Oh, and this ends with a cliffhanger. I suppose they planned a sequel but never actually made it because this one flopped so hard.

Amazing Lives has every possible warning signs all over it. This was made during the height of Oshii's career but as far as I know it was never officially released outside Japan or Asia. Why, you may ask? Because it sucks monkey balls.

The film is about professional bums who happen to have their own masters and special schools and stuff. Sound fun, huh? Well, it isn't. Amazing Lives is just some boring animation mixed with a narrator having an endless monologue. It's so obnoxious I had to watch it in small parts just to get it done.

Assault Girls (2009)
Oh no, this movie...

Assault Girls is absolute garbage with no real substance whatsoever. The film begins with the most confusing opening narration ever made, the only point being that the story takes place in the virtual world of Avalon. Explaining this simple thing takes over 10 minutes. Sucks ass!

Rest of the film is just actors posing in front of blue screen fighting some crappy cgi-things. Most the time it's just... nothing. There's literally nothing in this film, no plot or interesting characters or anything like that. It's just some lame photography with awesome soundtrack.

I'd rather cut my balls off than watch this travesty of a film again.

Assault Girls sucks. Case closed.

You bet your ass I was furious when I saw the Hollywood remake of Ghost in the Shell. Then.. I saw this piece of crap. Oh my f***ing god, it's even worse! And get this: this travesty of a film was made by the original team itself!

Where do I even begin butchering this film? As far as I know, this is not supposed to be a remake but a sequel to the original series. Still, they tried to copy the original Patlabor 2 as much as they could. So much in fact, that this film doesn't seem to have any real individual identity of it's own. It's just a very bad copy of the original classic.

The story, you may ask? It's just boring talking in some dark room, pretty much like that 2015 version of Fantastic four. Other than that it's just boring and gray and boring and gray and boring and more and more and more of the same. It's just boring and nothing else.

Of course there's the characters... which do not have any of the same charisma and personality as the original ones. The lovable and extremely well written characters were the basis of the whole original series and they blew it this time completely. These new live action ones are just as lame and boring as the rest of the film. There is literally nothing to enjoy here.

Only one thing separates this film from total oblivion. One joke. In the beginning there's some amusing reference to the House of the Dead by Uve Boll. It comes out of nowhere and it's hilarious - they clearly did it on purpose. That joke is the only good thing in the whole film. Everything else's just caca.
