Barbarella (1968)

February 1st: Instant watch, computer
Overall opinion: Good in a funny way

Barbarella seems to me like an incredibly sexy kid's movie. It kept my attention like the island of misfit toys kept my 6 year old self's attention. I love the 60's style sci-fi, all the big hair and carpeted spaceships and beautiful space babes, and I was pleasantly surprised to see male eye-candy as well.
It's a very simple movie, no clever writing or brilliant acting, the special effects are all typical of the time period. Not a good quality movie, but still an enjoyable one.
The fun isn't wondering if Barbarella will succeed in completing her mission but all the ridiculous hijinks she gets in along the way. Between the titular character getting captured 3 or 4 times, to the many strange alien beings she encounters, to the sex and sexual humor, there is always something to keep you smiling. This cult classic is very much worth a watch, maybe with a group of friends who might enjoy a good laugh.

Sorta nice in the same vein as Zodiak, though a lot less hard hitting for some reason. But nice! A little inconclusive, but it's based on real life, so, what would you expect? Ryan Gosling reached the level of scary a couple times, I think Kirsten Dunst was okay too, though I didn't really understand her motives. Or anyone's I guess? I dunno, the lack of info on the whole situation makes me wonder. But that's the point right, the lack of information is what makes it a mystery. Idk I'll watch it again someday.

Rumble Fish (1983)

Netflix Instant Project 2013
February 1st: Instant watch, computer
Overall opinion: Very good

I was a little enchanted with Rumble Fish; I'm too used to stereotypes of 50's/60's gangs (thanks a lot Grease) and I didn't see where the story was going for quite a while. I didn't think I'd be emotionally interested but I was... it was tragic and I could feel for the characters. Wishing you could hold on to the ways of childhood, being overwhelmed by very adult problems, and feeling the world changing around you for the first time, it's confusing and frustrating. Needless to say I liked it, very cool movie, nicely shot and worth watching.

The first part of this movie is boring, the second half is a lot like Assassin's Creed (or is AC a lot like this movie? I vaguely remember the latter having legal issues about stealing plots or something).

The characters lack any interesting traits. They spend a lot of time going to a virtual 1930's America, and of course our main character is a generic white male, the only type of person who could possible enjoy and thrive in 1930's America. Nothing of terrible interest happens, mostly this movie feels like a romance without the romance. There are some issues brought up about reality, who's human and not, which is interesting, but never really addressed. It's got potential but focuses a lot more on the uninteresting characters than the awesome sci-fi concepts.
The last 15 minutes do get a little interesting, I wish they had managed to keep that atmosphere through the whole film.

It's based on a novel. I wish I had read the novel instead of watching the movie, it could have been a really riveting read.

Timecrimes (2007)

February 8th: Instant watch, computer
Overall opinion: Good

I am out sick today the 8th of Feb so I am going to try and watch... FOUR movies today. :) Maybe five.

Started with Timecrimes because I've been craving sci-fi. This was a really interesting movie. It reminds me a bit of Strangers on a Train, not for any plot points but the main characters in both spiral ridiculously out of control of the situation and one thing after the other goes wrong.
The time travel concept here was cool, a chaotic device that according to once character "does not solve problems, it creates them." Very good way to describe this movie. "Timecrimes: In which time travel causes a lot of problems." I really liked seeing the main character Héctor change as time went on, digging himself deeper and deeper into this hole that he's stumbled into and wondering if he could possibly get out.

Some things you can see coming, some things it's a nice little surprise. I like that you get the story in these non-linear (or maybe it is linear thanks to the nature of time travel) chunks. Once I got into the rhythm of the movie I was eagerly waiting for the next revealing moment, and I was very entertained. A few spots even had me on the edge of my seat, so to speak. It wasn't exactly mindblowing but it was a great action-y sci-fi thriller, worth watching at least once.

I guess I'm not so interested in the marketing part of making movies, and this docu didn't so much as touch the art of scriptwriting. Getting into the business, what scripts people want to invest in, dealing with actors and directors, etc. Lots of people talking talking talking about writing scripts. It was very dry, cut to the chase. All very, very Hollywood as well. A lot of the people they interview have written for movies like Firewall, War of the Worlds, The Time Traveler's Wife, Click. There were a couple nice stories I wasn't expecting (it ended on a strong note), but for the most part none of them stood out as good writers or interesting people. It's it's all the business side of things and when I don't despise Hollywood business I am bored with it, which is about how I'd describe this documentary. Boring. The way to enjoy Tales from the Script is to be really, really interested in how Hollywood works, which I'm not, so I didn't.

The Fall (2006)

February 8th: IW computer screen
Overall opinion: Perfect

So glad I watched this without knowing at all what it was about. Every second was a pleasant surprise and I can't begin to tell how much I enjoyed it. It was visually beautiful, one of the most beautiful films I've ever seen. Both stories in the movie had me hooked, and with every scene change I was sad to leave one story behind and excited to go back to the other at the same time. The acting was excellent and Catinca Untaru as Alexandria was absolutely darling.

Manhattan (1979)

February 8th: Instant watch, computer
Overall opinion: Meh

First Woody Allen movie ever. I always laughed ay how my mother rages at Woody Allen movies, absolutely hates them, but I sort of get where she's coming from now. Why should we care about all these vapid people? It takes so long to show they even have emotions. I dunno man. There's really only so much you can watch a bunch of well-off white people in NYC complain about affairs and dating and their deep emotional scars and psychological baggage. They don't really do anything through the whole movie, and it's weird that I hate it for that since I liked it in Lost in Translation, but god these characters are ridiculously pretentious. They complain so much about their lives but nothing changes. I liked when Woody Allen's character got mad at the end but he didn't keep it up long. Oh well. I might try some other Woody Allen films someday, but maybe not.

And that was four movies today! :)

Scratch that, I've seen Alice (1990) by Woody Allen and I really liked it. The key must be to watch movies he doesn't star in.

Warm Bodies (2013)

February 9th: Theaters
Overall opinion: Nope

Oh my god noooooo this was so much worse than I thought it would be. Yet another pick from my mom so I should have seen that coming, but still. It was so blatantly aimed at mindless preteens who think life and dating is so hard. These kids act like they want a revolution, it's a fucking zombie apocalypse, they're lucky love can somehow cure knife and bullet wounds because reality check much? It's all so heavy handed, and of course this very privileged girl (IT'S A ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE AND SHE LIVES IN A MANSION AND HAS A BFF AND THEY EVEN DO A MAKEOVER IN THE MOVIE, THAT ACTUALLY HAPPENS) wants to change the world if only she can convince her powerful privileged daddy to see things her way. If only they had the internet so they could download new songs to their ipods that still work just fine! Boo hoo! And why the hell did Main Zombie Character bring her to his plane? It was like he collected her, like some object. Love at first site? He is an admitted hoarder and kidnapps her (don't tell me "but he's a zombie" because the whole "moral" of this movie are "zombies are people too") and then they fall in love. Ugh. Just no, awful. No.

The "skeletons" were sort of scary, they could have been suuuuuper creepy if this movie had any sense of atmosphere, but it didn't, it was boring and formulaic and I'm sad John Malkovich is in it because I actually like him.

I mean, it's Nic Cage in a sorta southern accent and he steals a baby, if that sounds funny you might just like it. Not a knee slapper but it had me laughing in a few places (stealing Huggies from the convenience store), it was all very goofy. Everyone was a huge ham and it was entertaining at least when it wasn't funny. I'd watch it again, for sure.

The first half was a bit cheesy and goofy and I thought I wasn't gonna like it, but it really picked up. It got a bit exciting near the end and most of the characters were fleshed out. Not really scary at all (was it supposed to be? The movie poster made me think it might, but then I saw MJF as lead and thought, maybe not), a fun popcorn flick though, and I liked Michael J. Fox in it.

Primer (2004)

February 11th: Instant watch, computer
Overall opinion: ...good? I guess so.

Negatives:
Slow
Meandering
Very, very quiet
Dull characters

Positives:
Unique mood/atmosphere
Interesting ideas
Less star-studded, more everyman
Amps up the action/interest in the last 20-30 minutes

Primer is a typical indie movie when it comes to the things I listed above, and for a long while I was a little bored with it, just interested enough to keep watching for the things they didn't explain, the ongoing mystery of the implications of their little experiment. I was rewarded by the ending, where things really came together. Besides, I love time travel movies and I think Primers has a cool enough story to make it worth a watch, if you can handle the slow quiet buildup.

Side Effects (2013)

February 17th: theaters
Overall opinion: Another tough one, but good.

I don't know how to give this a star rating so just ignore the lack of star rating. Soderbergh is hit and miss with me, where hits are "great!" and misses are "that was okay." Side Effect was more of a miss in that sense, but I think it's still a strong movie. It was more engaging than Haywire, I was very interested in the characters, and the acting was good. I don't want to ruin anything, it's a movie full of little twists and unexpected (sort of) developments. I just felt like Rooney Mara's character had gone down a path I've seen before. There was something a little predictable about it that I wasn't thrilled with, I was expecting something else. Overall the plot was a let down, but it was still a pretty strong movie, so I'm not sure what to think about it. If you like Soderbergh you should see it.

Barbarella is so bad that it's good, and I'm gonna watch Rumble Fish soon cuz it seems interesting.

Glad you enjoyed The Fall! And personally the humor in Raising Arizona is totally my taste, with the chase scene being the funniest bit of the entire film.

At this point there's no way I'm watching Warm Bodies.

I remember Frighteners! That was a fun little movie! ;)
I've been thinking of watching Barbarella again. It's been ages since I watched it.

"Timecrimes: In which time travel causes a lot of problems."

Haha, yes! Neat little movie, and I'm glad you enjoyed it!
I mean, it's Nic Cage in a sorta southern accent and he steals a baby, if that sounds funny you might just like it.

Double-haha! That might be my favorite thing I've ever read about Raising Arizona.

Okay, I'll stop quoting your list. I just dig the way you write about films!

Yep, The Fall is simply wonderful, isn't it? I was so caught up in reading your journal and excited that you liked the movie that I forgot that I actually recommended that one! I'll check back soon to see what you thought of Safety Not Guaranteed. In the meantime, I'll continue avoiding Warm Bodies. I very nearly went to see it last week, but last second realized that I figured the voice-over would drive me crazy.

Like Xanadon't, I'm glad that you liked Timecrimes, even if you didn't love it as much as me. And it warms my heart that you enjoyed The Fall on the same level as I did.
