Dames (1934)

On the Town (1949)

La violetera (1958)
Lenny (1974)

The greatest musicals ever chosen in 1990 by Lissabon film institute managers Luis de Pina and Jõao Bernard da Costa. Costa's Om Musical is one of the most known books about film musicals.

I myself love musicals (a very underrated genre) and this list is a great basic introduction for the classics. In chronological order, once again.

It is rare for them to not include "Cabaret" or even "The Wizard of Oz" in the list...

A musical that I liked is "On connaît la chanson" but their production year (1997) is after the making of the Brazilian list. Nice input, Lamourderer :)
