A great band, I loved their first 3 albums and their live album, but for me, they stopped being The James Gang when Joe Walsh left the band.
I know, Peters and Fox founded the band and Walsh came in later after some original members left, but it was Walsh's era that started recording. The classic line up was a 3 piece band with Walsh as the singer, guitarist, and main songwriter.
When Joe left to go solo, I think Tommy Bolin replaced him. I had heard some of the Miami and Bang albums. They were not terrible, but they just were not The James Gang to me. I think they should have retired the name, but I understand why they didn't.
I think they did a limited reunion tour with the classic line up of Walsh, Peters, and Fox a few years ago. Of course Joe is probably too busy with The Eagles and his solo work these days to devote much time to James Gang reunions. He plays James Gang hits in concert.
