Though Moore does have the single worst film in the cannon, in his era: AVTAK. He did at least take the series in a fresh direction, the same can't be said of Brosnan (Connery/Moore lite), Craig (Connery/Dalton lite) and Lazenby (Connery lite).

I never accepted Roger Moore as Bond. He was always Simon Templer, The Saint from the TV series, in my mind.
Lazenby and Dalton were undistiguised at best. Lazenby only lasting one movie and Dalton came at a time when the new AIDs epidemic's celibacy and safe sex stance really hurt the playboy aspect of Bond's character.
I thought Brosnon was a good choice to play Bond. He was actually offered this role after Roger Moore's run was through, but he was committed to the Remington Steele TV series at that time and they were unwilling to let him do it.
The jury is still out on Craig. I haven't seen either of his entrys, but my sources tell me Casino Royale (Ian Fleming's first Bond story) was good, but Quantum of Solace was not that good. He is the first Bond with fair hair and complexion, so that was something of a departure.
