Influential Metal Bands Part 1
Early/Classic MetalI don't think they're metal by any means, but they are the most influential band, other than the Beatles, of all time to almost every rock-spin-off genre.
4Gypsies's rating:
Not the first metal band, by any means but they are most likely the most influential, besides the "rock/metal" bands like: Sabbath, Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin.
4Gypsies's rating:
he leans towards hard rock/metal, however his make-up and spectacular shows will later have extreme influences on KISS, Twisted Sister, GWAR and black metal bands to come.
4Gypsies's rating:
Like Led Zeppelin, I don't consider them metal at all, but they're "metal" among millions of people and those in the music business/world.
4Gypsies's rating:
They may not be as heavy as Iron Maiden, but they have some fierce , powerful, heavy songs and influence tons of black metal bands and rock bands with their make up and pyros! Lots of bands try to be as good as them with pyro..not happenin doods!
4Gypsies's rating:
A big time glam metal band and are usually compared to Iron Maiden (lol), either way their heavy metal sound is to be reckoned with and a huge influence to GLAM.
4Gypsies's rating:
EVH's finger tapping solos and arpeggios will forever influence metal. They're overall sound is not metal but it leans towards glam and the solos are EXTREMELY influential.
4Gypsies's rating:
Thrash bandsOne of the "Thrash 4". They're of the biggest bands of all time, clearly and have had the most influence to thrash metal
4Gypsies's rating:
One of the "Thrash4" Megadeth will forever be a big influence to thrash and metal solos to come. They also have a notable mascot oooo.
4Gypsies's rating:
Also one of the "Thrash 4".Although I detest this band, Slayer has had a ridiculous amount of influence to thrash and death metal. They are one of the first bands to have a "breakdown"..you know mosh style breakdowns haha
4Gypsies's rating:
Part of the "Thrash 4", Anthrax brings out some powerful hardcore thrash that kids will mosh to until the end of time.
4Gypsies's rating:
These groovesters put thrash/groove/southern and sludge metal all into one crazy package. RESPECT!
4Gypsies's rating:
Very influential punk band that blended punk and thrash metal. Interesting combo. Too punk for me tho.
4Gypsies's rating:
Straight out of Brazil these thrashers have a big influence on metalcore and deathcore even!
4Gypsies's rating:
I don't know like..anything about these guys, other than the fact that they are one of the earliest thrash bands.
4Gypsies's rating:
They have a cult following and are said to be quite influential.
4Gypsies's rating:
Still going at it, these thrashers are popular and they keep getting heavier.
4Gypsies's rating:
Hardcore/MetalcoreI'm not a fan, but they sell tons of records and have the craziest fans! They are very influential "moshing" wise hahaha.
4Gypsies's rating:
Straight up hardcore LA style! They have great lyrics and care about friendships, watch out because these guys won't back down.
4Gypsies's rating:
Not metal, but pretty much started the genre "hardcore". Thank you Henry Rollins and the gang.
4Gypsies's rating:
One of the first bands to incorporate thrash and metal=Metalcore.
4Gypsies's rating:
A hardcore band that has turned into a more metalcore/metal band. They're influential.
4Gypsies's rating:
To me they're the definition of metalcore. Hardcore lyrics, mosh pits, breakdowns, black metal influence, punk and many more. Each record they put out gets more "black metally".
4Gypsies's rating:
Most well known and popular metalcore band in which is..Christian! They've paved the way for more bands that are Christian.
4Gypsies's rating:
The most influential Christian metal band, in my book. As I lay Dying and tons more have been greatly influenced by this band.
4Gypsies's rating:
KSE has risen to fame and are big on crazy thrashy metal with breakdowns, melodicness and beautiful singing for choruses.
4Gypsies's rating:
Like KSE in a lot of ways. These guys are big and influential. Very much metalcore.
4Gypsies's rating:
Big in Europe and now are becoming well known in the USA, Shadows Fall is a force that won't stop. Metalcore with crazy solos.
4Gypsies's rating:
Metalcore vets Trivium. With many comparisons to Metallica, Trivium is up there in talent and soon..fame.
4Gypsies's rating:
Not a fan, however BFMV has been a big influence on the more emotional side of metalcore almost "emo" you could say. They have great solos tho.
4Gypsies's rating:
Like BFMV, they're more emotional and their drummer sings! Quite unique.
4Gypsies's rating:
2nd biggest Christian metal band influence. They're iconic in the "Screamo" sense with the likes of Silverstein, Hawthorne Heights and Emery. Underoath keeps switching up with their albums and they're unique, have crazy music videos and are more proggy now.
4Gypsies's rating:
One of the heaviest metalcore bands ever! Almost death metal with their newest release about ZOMBIES! They're very outspoken with their Christian beliefs. My 2nd favorite band and are HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGE in the "scene" world.. unfortunately.

Also, I'm not a fan of Slayer either, though I respect them for their influence on other bands & the fact that they've mostly stuck to their signature sound.
Sabbath invented the Heavy Metal type of chunky guitar playing and the scary subject matter.
Zeppelin brought the bombastic drums out front. Before them, the drums were always at the back of the stage and mixed down into the songs. The thing that is amazing about Zeppelin is that they are known as the heaviest of the hard rockers, but almost 75% of their music is acoustic.
I consider bands like Led Zep and Deep Purple hard rock, but like you mentioned, they were very influentual.
The original Alice Cooper band (when it actually was a band and not a solo artist) was a very tight garage band.
I am staying out of the leather VS metal controversy.
