Current State of the Planet:
The Earth is a picture of dystopian misery with terrorist attacks ravaging the United States, a deadly virus obliterating mankind, and a sinister megacorp holding the disintegrated world to ransom with extreme military power and technology.

The head of the Statue of Liberty destroyed in a terrorist attack

Known Genocides:
- Coastal flooding, due to a catastrophic earthquake, results in the destruction of San Francisco. Most of California is subsequently removed from maps of America. The remaining area is then ignored by the Government, causing rogue American states to declare independence and engage in civil wars (two are mentioned).

- A book infers that India and Pakistan do not exist any more due to the exchange of nuclear weapons.

Inferred Genocides/Clues For Future Suffering:
- Suicide Clinics established to alleviate the overpopulation burden.

- The World Trade Centre is missing from the Manhattan Skyline due to alleged destruction by terrorist forces (Pre-September 11th)

- East River in New York cannot sustain life due to a chlorine spill.

- All food in-game is over-processed and barely edible, even in VIP areas, indicating the total collapse of arable farming.

- Multiple mentions of Spanish Flu and Tuberculosis pandemics occurring during the first thirty years of the 21st Century.

Final Fantasy VII - PlayStation
Current State of the Planet:
The world is controlled by a quasi-governmental multinational corporation who drain the planet of its life-force in order to sell cheap, non-renewable energy. Amoral executives with no regard for human or planetary welfare are supported by their global military machine.

The survivors of the attack on Corel live in sparse poverty

Known Genocides:
- Many years before the events which transpire during the game, a historical race was infected and conquered to near-extinction by an extraterrestrial life-form, Jenova.

- During the course of the game, an entire segment of the megalopolis, Midgar, is destroyed and sent crashing down onto the slums which evolved in its shadow.

- Numerous references are made to a war between Shinra and the nation of Wutai, which took several years to conclude and left the nation of Wutai crippled and humiliated.

- The mining town of Corel was razed to the ground by Shinra troops in reprisal for an attack on one of its own reactors, and in order to cripple the coal fuel industry.

- A Mako reactor at Gongaga suffered a meltdown which destroyed the surrounded countryside and town.

Inferred Genocides/Clues For Future Suffering:
- One village dedicated to unearthing artefacts of the past clearly shows a recently excavated supersonic jet. This jet may have been used in the Shinra-Wutai war, or perhaps is indicative of another human-esque species which was wiped out during the course of history. No flying machine on the planet appears to utilise jet engines and all rely on propeller propulsion. Furthermore, all technology produced by the cutting edge Shinra company looks antiquated in comparison.

- The whole world is largely dependent on Shinra for energy, weapons, transportation and protection from the monsters which freely roam the countryside. By the end of the game, Shinra is in ruins.

Current State of the Planet:
Most of the planet is unliveable due to an extremely toxic Terra-forming life-form which destroys all organic matter. Most civilians are now crammed into un-contaminated 'Blue Zones' as the creeping death of Tiberium edges ever closer.

The presence of Tiberium results in a desolate unyielding wasteland

Known Genocides:
- In the Command & Conquer series, at least three global Tiberium wars have been fought between the Global Defence Initiative and The Brotherhood of Nod.

- Superweapons developed and deployed during these eras have resulted in catastrophic death tolls.

- Tiberium is extremely mutagenic to mankind, with most humans succumbing to immediate death from Tiberium exposure. Tiberium covers 80% of the planet.

Inferred Genocides/Clues For Future Suffering:
- During the game, an Alien life-force invades Earth and, surprised to see humanity still kicking, launches a shock and awe assault against most of Earth's remaining cities.

Fallout 3 - PC Games
Current State of the Planet:
The game takes place in a nuclear wasteland, fraught with the perils of an irradiated world. Food, weapons, and sanitation are extremely difficult to come-by, yet savage raiders, mutated creatures and a mysterious military force of killers are all pretty common place.

Washington has lost some of its charm

Known Genocides:
- A nuclear war between the United States and the People's Republic of China has resulted in billions dead, and rolled back human civilisation to the Stone Age.

- China and America engaged in a conventional war at Anchorage as a prelude to nuclear engagement, resulting in many dead.

- Since the bombs fell, widespread starvation, radiation, killer mutants, a bustling slavery trade and brutal mob rule have all contributed to solving the non-existent overpopulation problem.

Inferred Genocides/Clues For Future Suffering:
- Despite the incredible hardship facing mankind, raiders, exploiters and criminals continue to inflict wanton violence on innocent survivors as humanity fails to work together for a better world.

Half-Life 2 - PC Games
Current State of the Planet:
Most humans are little more than slaves to a brutal extraterrestrial race who conquered Earth in a seven-hour war. Outside of the remaining cities, alien species are destroying Earth's natural plant and animal life.

Known Genocides:
- The total domination of Combine forces over the entire human race ensured that Earth's resistance to enslavement lasted a mere 7 hours. This presumably resulted in a widespread catastrophe on human life, further hinted in the fact that the de facto leader of Earth, Dr. Breen, operates out of an Eastern Bloc European city instead a former well-recognised human city.

- The Combine are shown using missiles filled with head-crabs to weaken resistance in any given area, which result in the transformation of human beings into mindless zombies. The town of Ravenholm was completely destroyed in this manner.

Inferred Genocides/Clues For Future Suffering:
- All waterways and oceans in the game appear to be regressing. Riverbeds are dry and docks are now several feet from the sea. It is likely the Combine are draining water off of the planet, which would have irreversibly destructive consequences for Earth.

- The surrounding wilderness outside of the city is filled with hostile alien life forms which appear to have killed off most of Earth's indigenous wildlife.

- Earth's resistance against the Combine, sparked by Gordan Freeman's return, results in many deaths during the game.

EVE Online - PC Games
Current State of the Planet:
The planet doesn't matter, there's an entire universe full of death and destruction.

A flying city

Inferred Genocides:
- You as the player and pilot of a ship are almost completely invincible. If your ship is wasted, you are preserved in a mobile pod which you can pilot back to safety, or if your enemies are feeling less kind, your pod will be destroyed and you'll respawn as a clone of your former self. However, your crew has no such luxury. While some ships are tiny and a loss of all hands insignificant, other Titan ships are the size of entire cities, and likely manned by tens of thousands of crewmen. Lost like tears in the rain.

Current State of the Planet:
It's a bad day to be a human as demons roam the street and kill and destroy every living thing in their path. The only hope of survival for the human race is to escape to the Space Port, heavily blockaded by said demons.

Get some!

Known Genocides:
- Quite simply, Hell has invaded the Earth and laid it to waste. Only Doomguy and a handful of human survivors are still alive, signifying billions dead. Worse still, the human race are going to have to leave Earth behind in search of a new home out in the cosmos.

Quake II - PC Games
Current State of the Planet:
This game follows the human counter-attack against an parasitic extraterrestrial war machine race known as The Strogg. Being a counter-attack, it's inferred that The Strogg and their brutal organic-harvesting ways have already attacked Earth.

The kind of machine employed to roam Earth and harvest human flesh

Known Genocides:
- The Strogg are a hive-minded race of warmongers who exist purely to self-propagate. They cannibalise all other forms of life, turning them at best into Stroylent food sources, or at worst, slave soldiers with invasive surgery and forced amputation and bionic grafting. The Strogg invasion of Earth is assumed to have resulted in a war lasting several years.

Metro 2033 - PC Games
Current State of the Planet:
Grim. Earth is uninhabitable due to a nuclear war. The only known survivors are tunnelled away into the hazardous Moscow Underground Metro system, and they're living on a diet of tea, rats and fear.

No respect for walls

Known Genocides:
- The aforementioned nuclear war has left Earth heavily irradiated and unable to support indigenous life. Whoever did not make it to the tunnels in time was presumably killed.

Inferred Genocides/Clues For Future Suffering:
- Since humans were pushed underground, horrific beasts have taken over the surface of the planet, and they routinely attack the residents of the Metro system and all those who dare venture to the surface for essential supplies.

- The Metro tunnels themselves appear fraught with a supernatural force of anomalies which routinely harm any living thing in their path.

- Humans still have irreconcilable differences in the tunnels, and a war still rages between communist and fascist forces at some stations, resulting in many pointless dead.

Genocide: "The deliberate and systematic extermination of a national, racial, political, or cultural group."

This list highlights unseen, inferred or predicted genocides which have either happened as part of the back-story of a game or are likely to happen as a result of the players actions.

Despite the obvious consequences of mass racial extermination, the genocides listed are never directly experienced by the player as part of the game.
