1. Dead Alive (1992)
Day 1: A memorable animal in a horror movie

A more cultivated person would probably go for the great white shark from Jaws or the birds from The Birds. But all I could think about was the rat monkey from Brain Dead. That thing is fucking hilarious.
ranna's rating:

People who added this item 2707  Average listal rating (1766 ratings) 6.7  IMDB Rating 7.2
2. Gremlins (1984)
Day 2: One of your earliest encounters with the horror genre

I saw Gremlins for the first time on a Christmas break when I was about 6 or 7. It totally made my holidays.
ranna's rating:

People who added this item 1502  Average listal rating (923 ratings) 7.3  IMDB Rating 7.5
3. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)
Day 3: A favorite saw or chainsaw scene

I fell like Captain Obvious here, but the final scene from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is absolutely epic.
ranna's rating:

People who added this item 1799  Average listal rating (1146 ratings) 7.1  IMDB Rating 7.5
4. The Fly (1986)
Day 4: A great horror movie doctor

Poor doctor Seth Brundle.
ranna's rating:

People who added this item 1450  Average listal rating (900 ratings) 7.9  IMDB Rating
5. Night of the Living Dead (1968)
Day 5: Favorite horror director

George A. Romero hasn't really brought his A game in the recent years, but the guy is still a genius. With a pair of killa' frames.
ranna's rating:

People who added this item 1359  Average listal rating (836 ratings) 7.8  IMDB Rating
6. Dawn of the Dead (1978)
Day 6: Your favorite movie by your favorite director

The best zombie movie ever made.
ranna's rating:

People who added this item 1716  Average listal rating (1134 ratings) 7.3  IMDB Rating 7.6
7. The Evil Dead (1981)
Day 7: A great hero

Enough said.
ranna's rating:

People who added this item 1314  Average listal rating (865 ratings) 7.5  IMDB Rating 7.9
8. Evil Dead II (1987)
Day 8: Best comedy-horror

ranna's rating:

People who added this item 2199  Average listal rating (1489 ratings) 6.4  IMDB Rating 7.1
9. Cloverfield (2008)
Day 9: A boring horror movie

I still haven't forgiven my friends for dragging me into this watered down PG-13 JJ Abrams piece of garbage. It pains me to even call this crapfest a "horror movie".
ranna's rating:

People who added this item 706  Average listal rating (447 ratings) 6.2  IMDB Rating 6.5
10. Slither (2006)
Day 10: An instant classic

A wonderful modernized and intentionally cheesy homage to the classic 1980's horror comedies. Great practical gore effects, hilariously over the top dialogue and a main character called Grant Grant. What's not to love?
ranna's rating:

People who added this item 209  Average listal rating (112 ratings) 7.1  IMDB Rating 6.5
11. Maniac (1980)
Day 11: Most psychotic killer

This guy was seriously fucked up. A wonderful performance by Joe Spinell.
ranna's rating:

People who added this item 637  Average listal rating (369 ratings) 6.2  IMDB Rating
12. Cannibal Holocaust (1980)
Day 12: The goriest movie you’ve seen

ranna's rating:

People who added this item 376  Average listal rating (213 ratings) 7.8  IMDB Rating 7.8
13. Eyes Without A Face (1960)
Day 13: Favorite foreign horror

Since I'm Finnish pretty much every horror film out there is "foreign" to me. But if we're talking about non English speaking movies Eyes Without A Face is probably my favorite.
ranna's rating:

People who added this item 736  Average listal rating (515 ratings) 7  IMDB Rating 7.3
14. They Live (1988)
Day 14: The cheesiest horror you’ve ever seen

"I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass...and I'm all out of bubblegum."
ranna's rating:

People who added this item 186  Average listal rating (111 ratings) 6.9  IMDB Rating 6.8
15. From Beyond (1986)
Day 15: A great 80’s horror movie

Not my favorite 80's flick, but a totally underrated little gem by Stuart Gordon of Re-animator fame.
ranna's rating:

People who added this item 234  Average listal rating (143 ratings) 6.5  IMDB Rating 6.7
16. The Loved Ones (2009)
Day 16: Great indie horror

Haven't seen a family this dysfunctional since the dinner scene in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
ranna's rating:

People who added this item 3882  Average listal rating (2660 ratings) 8  IMDB Rating 8.5
17. Alien (1979)
Day 17: Favorite horror franchise

ranna's rating:

People who added this item 78  Average listal rating (47 ratings) 5.9  IMDB Rating 5.4
18. Xtro (1983)
Day 18: A movie people hate that you love

Xtro is a dirty, cheesy, obscure horror exploitation film. But it's all kinds of awesome at that. It's a shame I seem to be the only person on this planet who thinks so.
ranna's rating:

People who added this item 1420  Average listal rating (958 ratings) 6.1  IMDB Rating 6.6
19. Drag Me to Hell (2009)
Day 19: A movie that disappointed you

PG-13, a lot of jump scares and one mildly creepy old lady. I expect better from the guy who did The Evil Dead trilogy.
ranna's rating:

People who added this item 222  Average listal rating (132 ratings) 6.5  IMDB Rating 6.2
20. Sleepaway Camp (1983)
Day 20: A great twist ending

One of those cases where the twist ending really makes the movie.
ranna's rating:

People who added this item 573  Average listal rating (373 ratings) 6.7  IMDB Rating 6.9
21. High Tension (2003)
Day 21: A horrible/lame twist

One of those cases where the twist ending really destroys the movie.

People who added this item 5555  Average listal rating (3693 ratings) 8.2  IMDB Rating 8.5
22. The Shining (1980)
Day 22: Best movie based on a book

A lot better than the book, actually.
ranna's rating:

People who added this item 141  Average listal rating (87 ratings) 6  IMDB Rating 5.9
23. Silent Night, Deadly Night (1984)
Day 23: Scariest old person

That old geezer seriously freaks me out.
ranna's rating:

People who added this item 557  Average listal rating (364 ratings) 6.6  IMDB Rating 6.8
24. Trick 'r Treat (2007)
Day 24: A movie you expected to be bad, but enjoyed

ranna's rating:

People who added this item 2188  Average listal rating (1367 ratings) 5.1  IMDB Rating 5.6
25. I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997)
Day 25: A franchise you don’t like

Generic and boring to the max.
ranna's rating:

People who added this item 228  Average listal rating (160 ratings) 4.9  IMDB Rating 4.8
26. The Fly II (1989)
Day 26: Worst sequel

ranna's rating:

People who added this item 80  Average listal rating (40 ratings) 4.6  IMDB Rating 3.8
27. The Mangler (1995)
Day 27: Favorite OR least favorite Stephen King movie

An ironing machine with a TASTE FOR BLOOD. And no, it can't move by it's own. About as horrifying as the satanic floor lamp in Amityville 4.
Why Tobe Hooper, why?
ranna's rating:

People who added this item 578  Average listal rating (362 ratings) 7.3  IMDB Rating 7.3
28. The Return of the Living Dead (1985)
Day 28: A great zombie movie

You gotta hand it to the first film in which zombies constantly blabbered about "Brraaains! More Brains!".
ranna's rating:

People who added this item 604  Average listal rating (376 ratings) 5.7  IMDB Rating 5.6
29. Saw: The Final Chapter (2010)
Day 29: A movie you refuse to watch

The first one was okay, the second one was kind of bad and after the terrible third installment I totally gave up. It was like watching The Bold and The Beautiful with random torture scenes. I think I'd rather hang around in one of Jigsaw's elaborate traps than sit through the rest of these movies.

People who added this item 107  Average listal rating (48 ratings) 5.6  IMDB Rating 5.7
30. Livid (2011)
Day 30: One you need to watch, a.s.a.p.

I know everyone keeps bashing this, but I really enjoyed Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury's previous film Inside. And at least it seems to be visually very beautiful.

Your taste in horror is impeccable!! I agree with lots of these- especially the two twist-ending categories. Can't wait for Livid either. I'll probably take a crack at doing one of these lists, but might be tough not to included some of the same answers as you. Great job!

A great list! Horror is one of my favorite genres and I love a number of the ones you've listed here. I think I will have to make a list like this, too.
