Shattered Memories succeeds at being thrilling, partially because of the unavoidable adrenaline you get from running and hiding. I love the use of psychoanalysis throughout the game, although I wish the game mechanic was more complex and affected the game world more.
The Resident evil games after Resident Evil 4 are more action oriented and are much less scary. Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles is a pretty fun on rails shooter if you have a friend to play the game with.
Resident Evil 5 is another Resident Evil game greatly enhanced by playing local co-op. The game doesn't hold a candle to Resident Evil 4 in terms of atmosphere and plot.
Dark Fall series
The Lost Crown
The Path
Haunting Ground
Dementium series
Forbidden Siren series
Penumbra: The Black Plague
Shadow Man
Barrow Hill
Lone Survivor
Thief: The Dark Project, although not straight-up full-fledged horror, had a fair amount of spine-tingling moments throughout the game; in fact, I'd say it's far more warranting of the horror label than dubious titles like Resident Evil 4. The level Return to the Cathedral alone puts most horror games to shame.
You can add Cold Fear and Extermination to the list of Survival Horror games not worth playing =Þ
Alan Wake was pretty good. I'd recommend giving that a go if you haven't yet.
