Heretic's Top 10 Horror / Suspense Thriller Films

1. Jacob's Ladder (1990)
The most extraordinary film of its kind, Jacob's Ladder inspired the Silent Hill series of survival horror games. Watch this masterpiece, but don't blame me if you never sleep well again.

2. The Thing (1982)
The pinnacle of sci-fi horror.

3. The Shining (1980)
Pure brilliance start to finish.

4. The Ring (2002)
The Ring is one of those films that has a "gotcha" near the end that's very powerful the first time you watch it. However, unlike most films that use that trick, the unrelenting horror atmosphere and great sets / locations / cinematography make this film worth coming back to see multiple times. It's also a rare gem in that it's an American remake that actually lives up to the original.

5. Event Horizon (1997)
Criminally underrated, this cult film is the best at what it does... horror in space. I'll admit that it could have a stronger ending, but it's a modern horror classic in my book.

6. Jaws (1975)
The suspense and horror hold up wonderfully to this day and on top of that, the narrative has much more depth than it's generally given credit for. There's a reason this movie is an immortal classic and it's not just because people are terrified of sharks.

7. Seven (1995)
Beautifully filmed and very well written, Seven continues to ramp up the horror and brutality until its stunning conclusion. I wish Brad Pitt hadn't forgotten how to act in the climactic scene, but despite that flaw this film is greatness.

8. Aliens (1986)
The best of the Alien series. Incredible atmosphere and suspense.

9. Brotherhood of the Wolf (2001)
This film is a fantastic mix of period piece, action epic, and horror / suspense. It is dark and macabre, yet strikingly beautiful throughout. Frankly, there's no other film like it.
Hereticked's rating:

People who added this item 1094  Average listal rating (751 ratings) 6.8  IMDB Rating 7.1
10. Pitch Black (2000)
Trapped on a foreign planet, cast into perpetual darkness and surrounded by vicious alien beasts. Hard to argue with that! Also, Vin Diesel makes a great anti-hero.
Hereticked's rating:

The absolute must-watch films in the horror / suspense thriller genre.

Event Horizon got slammed as being a Hellraiser: Bloodline rip off which had been released the year before "Event Horizon" and did rather poorly (because it was terrible). EH was also released the same year as "Conatct" so you had a heaven vs hell in the sci-fi world that critics were quick to mock.

Personally, the movie scared the pants off me and still does... it is a very creepy and emotionally dark film.

Yeah, Event Horizon is a excellent film and I don't understand why it gets slammed for its writing and acting by so many. I thought most of the cast members did a wonderful job and the writing was solid, with the exception of the very end which could have used a little tweaking. I guess some people roll their eyes at the idea of "spaceship goes to hell", but it's explained in the dialogue that its not really "hell" but a dimension of chaos that's beyond our understanding. Whenever someone disses it, I ask them to name me a better horror movie in space and they usually can't come up with anything but one of the Alien movies, at which point I roll MY eyes. :Þ

I love JAWS. It's funny how it ranks 6 here, but only 8 in the best films of the 1970's. It should have been higher!

It's a pretty safe bet ;-)

Just be sure to watch it alone and in the dark. No cheating! :P

I highly recommend M and Alfred Hitchock's films Psycho, Vertigo, and Rear Window.
