Despite me not being overly excited about the Guillermo del Toro films that I've seen, I do respect and salute him for having an unique visual style to his films and I do eagerly look forward to whatever he cooks up next. This is a list that ranks whatever I've seen from him in a best to worst order.

El laberinto del fauno (yes, I'm not using the English title) is a beautiful film. From the haunting music, to the gorgeous visuals and to heart-breaking story. It's a devastating combination of wonderful, imaginative fantasy and the horrors of war.

Crimson Peak (2015)

In the film, Mia Wasikowska's character explains that the story she is writing is not a ghost story, but instead a story with a ghost in it. It's obviously a way to describe Crimson Peak. It's another beautiful looking film from del Toro. It's essentially like watching a painting that starts moving. But, as someone else have stated, del Toro paints with a very huge brush on a rather thin frame.

The characters are underdeveloped and the plot is stretched out way longer than necessary, but unlike other del Toro films, this isn't too much of an issue this time. He still manages to create several tense scenes, and whenever things were moving a bit slowly, I was still looking at film that looks absolutely unique.

Blade II (2002)

Blade is just essentially cool. The action is well-crafted and there are quite a few bad-ass moments. The problem is that everything went on the expense of character development and story.

The second Hellboy is slightly better than its predecessor. The camp and humor is still very much a major positive about this superhero film. It scores some few points extra for being a tad darker, but at the end of day it's still just light entertainment that fails to resonate with me on an emotional level.

Pacific Rim (2013)

Pacific Rim would have been a wet dream for me if I was 13 years old. It's a visual spectacle, sure. But I do really wish that the script were a lot smarter.

I don't really think that the action scenes were impressive or engaging enough to keep me really glued to the screen. They were certainly fun, but they did feel kinda soulless anyway.

Hellboy (2004)

While it does have some rather cool action sequences and great dozes of humor, Hellboy is brought down by subpar acting, non-existent chemistry and a script that doesn't hold water.

I would definitely recommend you check out The Devil's Backbone, an atmospheric period ghost story that blends the best elements from Pan's Labyrinth and Crimson Peak.
