Great New Directors

Sort by: Showing 21 items
Average listal rating (883 ratings) 8.5  IMDB Rating
1. Christopher Nolan
I've only seen 4 of his films. but all have some level of genius that is rarely matched, the fact that maintaining a balance between auteur cinema and blockbusters also helps.

Average listal rating (208 ratings) 8.7  IMDB Rating
2. Joel And Ethan Coen
Since seeing "Fargo" i have loved all movies by them (maybe not "Intolerable Cruelty" and "The Ladykillers" but lets not talk about that), being honest it doesn't matter how weird are they, they know how to make cinema.
darkvlader's rating:

Average listal rating (802 ratings) 8.4  IMDB Rating
3. David Fincher
"Alien 3" was his first movie and was not as good as the later, "Seven " and "Fight Club" were early masterpieces, he had some mistakes with "The game" and "Panic Room" but returned with "Zodiac", "The Social network" is his latest film and is easily one of his best.
darkvlader's rating:

Average listal rating (474 ratings) 8.3  IMDB Rating
4. Darren Aronofsky
I never have been able to concentrate well to see "Pi", but then I saw "Requiem for a Dream" and "The Wrestler" it showed me that he really is a great director, I am missing 2 of his works but I think it will be equally cool.
darkvlader's rating:

Average listal rating (296 ratings) 8.3  IMDB Rating
5. Paul Thomas Anderson
"Boogie Nights" was a great movie and "Punch-Drunk Love" is clearly undervalued, having said that, I still have to see 2 of his films which are considered masterpieces; it's taking him some time to see make his next proyect, but i think that we should let him in peace.
darkvlader's rating:

Average listal rating (242 ratings) 7.9  IMDB Rating
6. Michel Gondry
Gondry's movies are not for everyone, but they are always interesting to see, his most recents films are trying to attract more audience but you could say that Gondry loses some of its originality in the way.
darkvlader's rating:

Average listal rating (183 ratings) 7.8  IMDB Rating
7. Edgar Wright
He is the only director I've seen all his movies, all are both original and funny, but not many people know them, I hope that in future he can have more audience.

Average listal rating (213 ratings) 7.5  IMDB Rating
8. Spike Jonze
I've only have seen "Being John Malkovich" but I found it original and fun, I still have to see "The Orchid Thief" and "Where the Wild Things Are", it seems that Jonze is taking time to see what will be his next project.
darkvlader's rating:

Average listal rating (1598 ratings) 8.3  IMDB Rating
9. Quentin Tarantino
Tarantino's cinema is great and almost unique, although none has had many imitators reaches its height, the reason that heat this is place is because I say that he should have done "True Romance" and "natural born killers", that and the fact that his performances makes me a little upset.
darkvlader's rating:

Average listal rating (392 ratings) 8  IMDB Rating
10. Guillermo del Toro
Del Toro is one of the best directors to come out of Mexico, the fact that this here is because several recent projects have been canceled.
darkvlader's rating:

Average listal rating (39 ratings) 6.9  IMDB Rating
11. Neill Blomkamp
"District 9 " is one of the best science-fiction movies of recent years, it is good to show parallels with apartheid, his next movie "Elysium" plans to do something like that again, besides being a tribute to "Blade Runner".
darkvlader's rating:

Average listal rating (48 ratings) 7.9  IMDB Rating
12. Duncan Jones
After seeing "Moon" I have no doubt that Jones will be a great director, it seems that "Source Code" will not be as good as the previous but still be entertaining.
darkvlader's rating:

Average listal rating (589 ratings) 7.3  IMDB Rating
13. Robert Rodriguez
According to me he is a director a bit undervalued, some of his films for children are not very good and that is why we are a bit low, besides that "Roadracers" is hard to achieve and the sequel to "Sin City" is taking too long.
darkvlader's rating:

Average listal rating (35 ratings) 7  IMDB Rating
14. Shane Black
"Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" is a great movie, it's funny and has good mystery, I thought it would be his only movie, but now that there are emerging news that he will direct "Iron-man 3" and "Death Note ", I'm starting to think that he will have a great return.
darkvlader's rating:

Average listal rating (22 ratings) 6.5  IMDB Rating
15. Joe Carnahan
"Narc" from Carnahan is brutal and Noir and it was a great piece for his beginnings, his next two films have not been so well received, but this does not mean they are bad, he just makes them for fun, now that "The Grey" is in production I hope that he can do "White Jazz" and "Killing Pablo".
darkvlader's rating:

Average listal rating (437 ratings) 7.9  IMDB Rating
16. Danny Boyle
He never stays in one genre, he likes to do different things and all his works are good, Slumdog Millionaire was the movie that gave him the Oscar, but is far from one of his best.
darkvlader's rating:

Average listal rating (97 ratings) 7.3  IMDB Rating
17. Matthew Vaughn
Of his three films I've only seen two, "Kick-ass" wich looked great and "Stardust" wich could have to see the back to give a better opinion, whatever, I'm already waiting for "X-men: first class ".
darkvlader's rating:

Average listal rating (43 ratings) 7  IMDB Rating
18. Abel Ferrara
Ferrara is a very underrated director, all his movies are meditative and provocative, maybe that is why not all are saw by everybody, they are not ready for that.
darkvlader's rating:

Average listal rating (316 ratings) 7.9  IMDB Rating
19. Lars von Trier
Von Trier is a very particular director, almost none of his films is like the previous one and in fact no other that seems to exist; his most famous works being "The Idiots", "Dogville" and "Antichrist", and as I said earlier none of them is similar to each other.
darkvlader's rating:

Average listal rating (85 ratings) 7  IMDB Rating
20. David O. Russell
I think he is on this list because the premises of all of his movies sound original and flashy, I hope that someday he'll make all the movies that he have on his list.
darkvlader's rating:

Average listal rating (248 ratings) 7.1  IMDB Rating
21. Zack Snyder
My opinion is that Snyder is a good director and that he just likes to make adaptations of other's works because he believes they deserve it, "Sucker Punch" will be his first original work and although maybe is not going to pleasure all, I hope something fun and good.
darkvlader's rating:
