I get headaches when i think that directors like Hitchcock or Nolan don't even have a STINKIN' OSCAR!!! Ooo, Academy! You nominate them over the years, they don't win and then you give them a Honorary Award! Smooth!!

In the end, it doesn't matter because I (and you) know they're brilliant with or without an Oscar.

*I didn't put directors who won an Oscar ( not for directing ).

Directors like Stanley Kubrick, Orson Welles or Tarantino were not added because they have an Oscar (not for directing) but they have one.

Alfred Hitchcock was nominated for Best Director five times, and back then it was considered more than what it is today.
And in my opinion, that's not bad at all!. Well done Hitchcock!.

Great list, but not a Spike Lee fan (other than Malcolm X).

Bergman and Fellini did at least direct Oscar winning "Foreign Language" films. Truly great directors like Mizoguchi, Renoir, Tarkovsky and Satyajit Ray missed out on that, though Renoir's Grand Illusion was nominated for the Best Picture Oscar. Oscars are mainly a celebration of ignorance and mediocrity

With the exception of Spike Lee, great list.
