Dunkirk (2017)
Christopher Nolan's telling of the evacuation of troops from the port of Dunkirk in France during 1940 is not the masterpiece that many are saying it is. If you're under the impression of having your mind blown by the next great wartime classic of our generation, then you may be slightly disappointed. I admit I was in this group. The movie takes place from the POV of three main characters - a pilot, a civilian boat captain, and a soldier. The German soldiers are basically never seen - but when they attack the scenes are really harrowing. Nolan does an amazing job with the battle scenes and the epic score that holds the suspense together. But the story never really explores any of the character's enough to have a huge emotional reaction to their success or failures to succeed. Overall there are certain aspects of this movie that are really good but I don't think it really is a must see movie.

Shadowlands (1993)
Shadowlands is the true story of the author CS Lewis and his relationship with the American writer Joy Gresham. This is a beautiful movie, set mostly in the lovely English countryside around Oxford in the mid 50's. The period is well depicted, and you feel that you have stepped back slightly in time. The script is brilliant. Emotional issues are handled with great intelligence, and comic touches help to lighten what is sometimes a very dark story. The acting is excellent. Anthony Hopkins' portrayal of Lewis is sensitive without being weak. Debra Winger hits all the right notes in her portrayal of Joy, brash and bold, yet with a better understanding of emotion than the more sensitive Lewis. Edward Hardwicke does a nice job with Warnie, Lewis' brother giving us a performance that makes us wish we knew more about him. I'm sure many will get teary-eyed with a scene right near the end. Well worth watching.

The movie was inspired by true events set in the 1970's. It was about a Neapolitan Mafia Boss Tanny Zampa who ran a French extortion gang in Marseille, France who then started to buy heroin from Turkey being flooded into New York by the French mafia. It was a dedicated judge Pierre Michel who raged bloody war against Zampa's empire.

This is a very well made good guys vs bad guys drama with some action scenes mixed in. The director takes us back to the 70's with the sets and costumes rendered to perfection in every last detail. We see the two leading characters in their worlds of business and family. The pace of this movie is fast between paralleling the two principles' activities and chronicling the confrontations. It inevitably tells of their rise and fall too. The 2 hours plus running time goes quickly and it never dips into being boring to watch. Superb acting by Jean Dujardin as Michel and Gilles Lelouche as his nemesis Zampa. Overall, this is a solid movie and a showcase of how good French cinema can be.

The Stranger (1946)
This is a taut thriller about a war crimes detective who heads to a small town to hunt down a Nazi criminal who has escaped justice. Orson Welles plays the Nazi who has hidden himself as a college professor and married a local woman. Edward G Robinson is the dogged detective who will not give up on catching his Nazi. Welles provides menace as the net is slowly closed in on him and even his naive wife when told that her husband might be a war criminal refuses to believe it. It all builds up to a great finale in a church tower. Excellent acting all round by the cast. A fantastic film noir.

Villain (1971)
A forgotten Brit gangster movie largely due to the fact that Michael Caine's Get Carter came out in the same year. Richard Burton plays a nasty and violent piece of work by the name of Vic Dakin (supposedly based on Reggie Kray). Burton tries his best at perfecting a cockney accent but can often be seen fumbling through his lines. Good use of location filming in London itself and the now sadly demolished West Pier at Brighton. Burton does well as the mother loving homosexual psychopath and there's a large supporting cast which includes Ian McShane, Colin Welland and Donald Sinden as a sleazy, blackmailed MP. Surprised to see that comedy writers Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais did the script to this movie. This is a good gritty gangster movie which deserves to be seen by more people.

Havana Segrand is an actress trying to mount a comeback. She wants to star in a remake of a movie her mother was in but is struggling in trying to convince the director she is the best choice. When Agatha Weiss arrives in town and becomes her new assistant things begin to change, not only for them but for the entire city and industry.

This is a movie I really enjoyed, but it is not for everyone. The acting is great and the writing is very intelligent, but the movie itself is very dark. It's a David Cronenberg movie so that should give you an idea of what to expect from this. Julianne Moore gives an amazing performance and this is a movie that is almost impossible to predict what will happen. I really enjoy movies that stay one step ahead of me. This is a movie that you can't talk too much about without giving things away but this is a movie that I think deserves to be seen. Overall, great acting and writing but a very dark and moody movie. If you think you can handle it than give it a shot.

The Borrower (1991)
An alien is punished by his own kind and sent to be exiled on Earth in a human body. The only problem is his human head seems to explode sometimes so he has to take another human head as a replacement!

What a weird and strange horror this is. Totally bonkers! The script is quite clever and the movie has plenty of amusing moments. Impressive make-up effects by Kevin Yagher and plenty of gore help but only to a certain extent. Runs too long and tends to drag out a bit, especially towards the end. I'm sure you'll find this movie unintentionally funny (I'm sure it's not supposed to be a comedy?). An odd choice of movie for the director given that he made the excellent Henry: Portrait Of A Serial Killer previous to this.

In the sequel to Library Wars, one of the Library Defence Force staff Komaki is detained by the Media Task Force for recommending a book to a deaf girl. It is deemed unsuitable for disabled people. The LDF are angered by this arrest and try and get Komaki free.

The first Library Wars movie was fairly good and this movie continues the story of the struggle between the LDF who don't want censorship for any books and the MTF who use any excuse to ban books which they don't like. The same cast also return with Nana Eikura being the lead as the cute and rather naive at times Iku Kasahara. The same atmosphere and humour is maintained as well. It builds to a satisfactory ending with a cliffhanger that is resolved in the 3rd and final movie The Last Mission. Looking forward to seeing that.

Tsui Hark (director) and Stephen Chow (writer/producer) team up for this sequel to the 2013 movie. It has an all new cast and the only person returning for a small cameo is actress Shu Qi. Whilst the story may not match it's predecessor it is still entertaining nevertheless. It has Stephen Chow's sense of humour and imagination throughout. The visuals are amazing with lots of lush colours used. The chemistry between the 4 main characters are great and produce many laughs. I didn't think there was enough action and never felt the heroes were in any real danger from the demons shown in the movie. It's a good popcorn movie - there's nothing special about it but it's enjoyable.

Oh My Zombie! (2016)
I was expecting this to be a fun Japanese zombie horror comedy but it's not and instead of concentrating on the threat from a lone zombie trapped inside a house, it's more or less a character driven movie about 6 individuals with hidden agendas discussing how to deal with the zombie. Although there's some gore around the hour mark, for a zombie movie it's relatively blood free. The majority of the story has the characters arguing with each other in the living room of a house which I found rather dull. I did think that things would pick up as everybody starts turning on one another but sadly it never happened. This movie didn't engage me at all. I understand that the director would want to approach a zombie comedy in a different way from other movies but somehow it didn't quite turn out as planned. It was a complete waste of 90 mins

John Cleaver is a high school student with an unhealthy obsession with serial killers. His small Midwestern town begins to experience a series of brutal murders. John's mother is the town's only mortician and she allows her son to help her with the postmortems. He plays detective and becomes friends with an elderly neighbour, Crowley, played by Christopher Lloyd, in his best role since Back to the Future. Lloyd is funny, sarcastic and he pretty much steals this movie. The less written about where his quirky character goes, the better. Lloyd and his young costar, Max Records, have a strange and endearing chemistry which will keep viewers guessing as to how it will all end. A nice surprise this movie.

The Mule (2014)
A very well made Australian black comedy about a slow-witted man who reluctantly becomes a drugs mule, gets arrested by the cops and then refuses to shit out the heroin bags he has inside his body. It is supposedly based on a real life incident that took place in the early 80's. The story moves along nicely and is told in an entertaining manner. Although Hugo Weaving has top billing, it's Angus Sampson who plays the leading character. He is brilliant as Ray, the drugs mule. There is some grossness to be expected with this movie and one scene in particular will have you gagging! All in all, a beautifully produced movie with a fine cast and a good story to boot. Highly enjoyable for anyone to watch.

Anyone who has ever owned a dog is going to love this movie and probably shed a tear or two as well. It follows several lifetimes of a dog that comes full circle by the end. There is definitely an emotional roller coaster when it comes to this movie, and this time, it was done right. The feelings of transition and letting go are something that is hard to deal with and this movie hits it straight to home. It's heartfelt moments leave you crying your eyes out and the next you are feeling woe free. I was not really surprised by the ending of the movie, it was the ending I expected, but the trip was what mattered the most. I really enjoyed it.

Rough Night (2017)
So this is like a female version of The Hangover except it's not as funny. It does have the cast that had potential to be in a great comedy movie led by Scarlett Johansson. The problem is the majority of them are useless with the exception of Kate McKinnon whose character is weird and odd but at least she makes you laugh. The movie can only go so far with its penis jokes, sex toys humour and a sequence of Scarlett's character fiancé Peter wearing adult diapers and roaming around a gas station doing favour for cash while going on an all night road trip to Miami. It has its cheap laughs and gags but when the humour is repetitive it just gets dull from there on and out. This movie could have been better. See Bridesmaids for a comedy that delivers on jokes and humour instead.

A terrible Disney family adventure movie about 2 kids and a poncey old Frenchman looking for the kids' father who has gone missing. An overused story, goofball acting, crappy special effects, and Maurice Chevalier made this romp through pre-teen hell a total castoff. To be honest it is Chevalier that makes a lot of this movie so awful. Pure bollocks it is when we see the group merrily singing away after all sorts of natural disasters such as being stuck in a giant tree after a massive flood. This is a dreadful piece of drivel from Disney.

Summer Magic (1963)
Widow Dorothy McGuire has to grab her 3 kids and leave their neat home for a dilapidated house in Maine. Cue songs and 800 weight of syrup as Hayley Mills, Burl Ives and co work out this Disney adaptation of Kate Douglas Wiggin's novel Mother Carey's Chickens. Yes a family movie that is as safe as the house that Dorothy and brood do up, yes I understand it's a kids movie, and a musical to boot. But the screenplay from Sally Benson is as dull as dishwater and the cast are way too animated. A sappy dud of a movie.

Adapted from 2 of Jules Verne's lesser known novels, this movie finds a man named Robur, the captain of the airship "The Albatross" hell-bent on destroying all of the world's war machines and armies for the purpose of peace on earth. Robur's intentions may be admirable but the way he intends to do that is terrible. It's a fairly good adventure though the special effects look dated now. It's interesting to see Charles Bronson in an early role and Vincent Price is good as he always is as a villain. Not too bad a movie though it is lacking in any real excitement and action.

Risen (2016)
It is the aftermath of Christ's death on the cross and the body disappears three days later. This makes for a fine mystery, and the screenplay offers an interesting point of view on the subject. Joseph Fiennes is cast as a Roman soldier who oversees the famous event and leads the war against the Jews. It is believed that the disciples of Christ removed his body. Fiennes is stricken with curiosity and eventually pulls away from his duties in pursuit of a whole new meaning to life. Tom Felton of Harry Potter fame plays a young Roman soldier under the wing of Fiennes. Peter Firth is cast as Pontius Pilate who demands the whereabouts of the body in order to prove that Christ was a fake. One of the worst elements of the movie is the over the top delight or glee of the disciples. Their joy of the risen Christ is understandable but the actors seem to go into overact mode to convey this. So in the end this was a surprisingly good biblical movie that offered enough new elements to this familiar story to differentiate it from the countless other similar movies.

A mostly good reproduction of John Osborne's stage play about a college-educated Englishman trapped in a dank working class existence and lashing out at everyone around him but mostly taking it out on his wife. The late great Richard Burton excels as the leading character Jimmy Porter but it is never explained fully at what he is so angry about. I think it's the class system of the country more than anything. I felt so sorry for his fragile and suffering wife played by Mary Ure. The abuse she endures by Jimmy is horrible. Also look out for Donald Pleasance in an early role as an inspector at a market, the kind of bureaucrat you love to hate. I don't think everybody will enjoy this movie as Burton's constant moaning will start to bore some people. I still liked it but the plaudits that have been heaped upon this movie I think is a bit too much as it's hardly a classic.

This movie certainly had a lot of potential but, unfortunately, this flick went nowhere. And it went there, fast. It had a truly fascinating premise that if handled properly could've been up there as a very good sci-fi/cyberpunk movie had the filmmakers not botched things up. Johnny Mnemonic is an utterly forgettable movie filled to overflowing with totally uninteresting characters mouthing laughable dialogue set against the back-drop of a hideous landscape of urban hell. Keanu Reeves is awful here and shows how how useless he can be when acting. Dolph Lungdren is OK and the great Takeshi Kitano is wasted. Not worth watching if I'm being honest.

The Barrens (2012)
What an appropriate name for a movie that is really barren and just plain awful. I thought this was going to be a monster movie about a family being stalked by the Jersey Devil but it's more like a poor man's version of The Shining in the woods minus the tension and the scares. The acting is atrocious. The movie is a clichéd, unimaginative, unoriginal, warmed-over, piece of crap that doesn't warrant your attention. I cannot recommend this movie for viewing, not even to my worst enemy - the 94 mins running time was painful to endure!!!

I haven't had that much experience with Dragon Ball Z over the years but I thought I'd check this movie out. It's quite a cool movie with really nice animation, really cool battle scenes with fun and lively characters. The plot finds Beerus, the God of Destruction awakening from his deep slumber. He remembers a prophecy about finding a powerful challenger in the form of a "Super Saiyan God" and thus comes to Earth which puts Goku, Vegeta and their families and friends in his sights. There's tons of fantastical and frenetic action with some humour thrown in too. I'm not too sure how long time DBZ fans will like this movie but from someone who has just seen a little of the anime I really liked it.

This is a movie that looks at the sado-masochistic relationship of two lesbians and the demands they make of each other. At the heart are two lovers Cynthia and Evelyn who seem to be in a very one sided relationship – one being the mistress and one being a badly used servant. They are also both entomologists and give talks on moths and butterflies. The title of the movie is the name given to a rare butterfly found in Europe. In case you think this is an explicit sexual movie it's not - it's all done very tastefully. The movie is beautifully filmed. The visuals in the movie are so colourful and so rich with detail that you could easily watch the movie without the volume and still know exactly what happened from beginning to end. Sidse Babett Knudsen and Chiara D'Anna are excellent as the two leads. It's an interesting and beautiful movie and well worth your time.

It's been 12 years since Cutie Honey was last on the big screen and now she's back but this movie however, is a different kettle of fish to the original. It's a very poor movie which is all CG effects and no storyline. Even the action scenes are boring. In fact there's nothing to really suggest that you're watching Cutie Honey as the trademarks of the character are non existent. If you're making a Cutie Honey movie at least give some indication that the leading character is Honey. This could be any cheap Japanese sci-fi movie. The only thing going for it is the 2 leading female roles. Mariya Nishiuchi and Nicole Ishida are drop dead gorgeous. It's a shame that nothing else stands out. This is a total waste of 90 mins. Don't bother with it.

It is 1941 in China and Jackie Chan is Ma Yuan who leads a group of freedom fighters that steal a train in order to blow up a bridge that is on a vital key military transportation route for the Japanese. This is the 3rd collaboration between Jackie and director Sheng Ding (the previous were Little Big Soldier and Police Story: Lockdown). It's a fun action comedy but don't come here expecting to see Jackie doing his usual martial arts hi-jinx and death defying stunts. There's plenty of action though which should keep you from getting bored although the comedy somehow doesn't fit in with all the deaths that are taking place. Jackie gets to act with his son as well and there's a very small cameo for Andy Lau just before the end credits. I wouldn't say it's up there with Jackie's best and let's face it his movies in the last 10 years haven't been particularly special but Railroad Tigers is an entertaining ride that you should enjoy.

I've seen all of the Ringu movies except this one and it's a good job I didn't until now as it's so dull and completely different in style and tone to the original. This was supposed to be the sequel that would wrap up the Sadako story in a different way. This movie flopped big time in Japan and paved the way for Ringu 2 to carry on the cursed videotape storyline as it's a virus that kills people in the plot and not a curse. Rasen is a slow movie and actually more of a psychological drama than a horror. If you come to this movie expecting to be scared then you'll be sorely disappointed. None of the dread and foreboding is present here and there's no Sadako coming out of the well either. There's really nothing much going on in this movie, or actually to care about. Overall, a poor movie that's not worthy of being associated with the Ringu franchise.

Wood Job! (2014)
After failing his college exams, Yuki Hirano decides to make a fresh start and join a one-year trainee program for forestry workers, aka lumberjacks after he sees a girl on the brochure of this program. When Hirano arrives at his destination, a village in the forest he quickly tries to go back but changes his mind and thus starts his year long training being schooled in the basics of lumber jacking.

The Japanese are good at making these zero to hero comedy movies and this one is no exception. It's an upbeat fish out of water story with plenty of laughs. Over the course of the movie, the viewer sees Hirano change from being a laughing stock by his co-workers to being a respected member of the village community by the end. Shôta Sometani plays Hirano and his comedic timing is brilliant. He's joined by Ito Hideaki as the tough lumberjack who gives him a hard time and Masami Nagasawa as his love interest. The cinematography showing the beautiful forest landscape of Mie Prefecture is exceptional. This is a great comedy which does not rely on crude humour but on visual gags and quirky characters. Definitely well worth seeing.

This retelling of the King Arthur story directed by Guy Ritchie has been savaged by the critics but it isn't too bad a movie. Don't expect a traditional King Arthur story here. It's different but in a good way with modern day slang being used and exciting set pieces - you might say a typical Guy Ritchie movie. Charlie Hunnam is decent as Arthur, playing a wisecracking character that wants nothing to do with power. Astrid Berge-Frisbey as Mage is good, her character was quite interesting. Only wished there was a backstory for her. Jude Law felt a little miscast as the villain Vortigern. I had fun trying to name the locations used in this movie as some of it was filmed in North Wales where I live. King Arthur is a fair fantasy movie. It's one of those movies that's worth seeing once but you'll have forgotten about this take of the legend in years to come.

A young beautiful New York waitress who is an aspiring model is attacked, raped and then knocked unconscious before waking up in a foreign country several days later and left for dead locked up in a metal box. She finds a way to escape and tracks down those who wronged her to exact punishment.

This is a nasty revenge movie make no mistake about it. The torture/rape scenes are stomach churning but the punishment killings that follow are even worse though not quite as gruesome as the first ISOYG remake movie. Newcomer Jemma Dallender really is great in most of her role. What she goes through is horrifying and she will make you believe it in the worst way. You will cheer as you patiently wait for her to exact her own brutal, justified and satisfying vengeance on everyone who hurt her. There is one big plot hole that is not explained and that is how the hell did they manage to smuggle the girl out of the US into Bulgaria? Still it's a good horror sequel not for the faint hearted.

A charming documentary about an 89 year old sushi chef Jiro Ono who runs a Michelin 3 star restaurant in Ginza, Tokyo. Here is a man that strives for perfection in every meal he does for his customers. He carries on working not for financial gain but because he enjoys it. His small restaurant only has 10 seats and his 20 course menu will set you back a whopping $300!! Despite it being expensive, you have to make reservations at least one month in advance in order to secure a seat. It's no secret to reveal that dedication, hard work and perseverance are the ingredients to Jiro's success today. The documentary follows the restaurant staff which includes Jiro's 2 sons picking the best tuna from the fish market at Tsukiji to preparing the fish and shaping/cooking the rice before presenting it to the customer. It's an art form in itself watching these people at work. Foodies are absolutely going to love this movie.

Dominic Monaghan is a creepy stalker who takes a shine to a pretty waitress played by the stunning Ksenia Solo. After she turns down several requests from him to go for a date, he kidnaps her and keeps her locked up in a small cage down in the old basement of the vetinary practice where he works. The waitress though has a couple of secrets she is trying to hide.

Even though this kind of movie has been done to death, I still liked this movie. It's got an interesting premise. The two actors in the main roles are the ones responsible for holding the script and movie together as they, and the characters they create, work really well together and are more than credible as two broken people finding a dark and twisted love. There are some genuine moments of tension and gore as well. If you have the patience and the guts, this is a nice little movie for horror fans.

Possibly the worst Spiderman movie I've seen and doesn't come close to matching Raimi's brilliant trilogy. I was expecting an origin story but it's not. It's like a Spiderman movie for young teenagers. Tom Holland is OK as the teenage Spiderman though the tone of his voice does grate from time to time. I just couldn't connect with his Peter Parker or Spiderman. Michael Keaton is better though as the villain Vulture. There are a couple of decent action sequences most notably the one with the Staten Island ferry being cut in half. The storyline isn't the best and it's just so damn plain. Not exciting enough. So all in all, this isn't a good movie. I'll stick with Tobey Maguire's Spiderman movies. They are so much better than this effort.

The Despicable Me movies I think has run it's course now. This, the 3rd doesn't have that cuteness and charm that the previous movies had. Don't get me wrong, it does has some funny moments which was quite good to see and enjoy but it's like more of the same. The Minions probably get the best laughs. I wouldn't say I was overly keen on the annoying villain Balthazar Bratt. I didn't like Gru's twin brother either. On the plus side - the animation is very good and the soundtrack was amazing. A great Swedish movie about a teenage boy John who has killed somebody but being a juvenile he is only sent away to detention for 2 years. On his release he returns to his home, father and younger brother Filip. The crime he has committed is too much for the local community and more over his school companions to bear with whom he wishes to remain. This is a community long on memory and short on forgiveness.

The movie essentially is about forgiving, or more precise about the willingness to forgive. The interesting thing is that the viewer at first is inclined to sympathise with John, who seems to be the victim of ruthless rejection by the community. But John himself doesn't help things with his attitude. A bit of a loose canon and a hot head. There's an interesting father-son relationship going on here. The father tries his best with John but finds it difficult to get through to somebody with a severe psychological problem. The story pulls you along but that only works because the acting is so convincing and compelling. This is a movie that is easily recommended to anyone who likes Nordic Noir or even a good teen drama.

A fun caper and the second of the Dexter Riley movies from Disney in the early 70's which sees a young Kurt Russell accidentally discovering how to make something invisible at college. However, once some crooks find out about it, they plan on robbing a bank by making themselves invisible.

Cheap special effects and a fast-paced plot make this a lively movie! A pleasant little comedy that the entire family can enjoy. It's got some great laughs, fine acting, car chases and a good story. If you want to sit down and relive a bygone era then this is an ideal choice to watch.

This movie is a fun ride, has some nice gore and some actual laugh out loud scenes. The cast was good for the most part and helped keep the tone of the movie nice and light. There were a few characters on the annoying side but not enough to fully pull the movie down. One of my main complaints would be that things do take a while to truly get going, but at least there was some decent humour to keep things entertaining. This was a nice surprising treat as I was expecting this to be rather lame. It isn't perfect and some of the humour was a little too dry but it definitely did a good job of being fun and not really taking itself seriously at all.

Big Daddy (1999)
A massive dollop of schmaltzy Hollywood cheese designed to tug at the heartstrings but leave a big smile on the face, Big Daddy is extremely formulaic stuff that simply lets Adam Sandler do his thing: be a likable loser who learns a valuable life lesson and changes his ways for the better, all the while delivering crass gags about urinating in public and women with big breasts!! If Sandler's name in the credits doesn't make you want to turn off instantly, then this should prove a reasonably fun way to waste your time — just don't go expecting too much from it.

A good refreshing take on the zombie genre set in a post apocalyptic Britain. The country has been infected by a fungal virus which has turned most of the population into zombies nicknamed Hungries. Humanity is now relying on a second generation of hybrid children, that can still think and learn, especially one special girl called Melanie. The movie is well directed and acted. The story is clever and thought provoking with an absolutely banger of an ending. It's also got plenty of zombie action, and gruesome gore. The main cast of Sennia Nanua, Gemma Arterton, Glenn Close and Paddy Considine are great. Zombie movie fans should enjoy this one.

A painful unfunny screwball comedy set in 1930's London. With questionable acting, two-dimensional characters and the flimsiest of all possible plots, the only thing that can save the movie would be very deft direction but even that is sadly lacking. Amy Adams plays the typical air head blonde Delysia who is wacky and ditzy and has several men on the go but that doesn't make her character funny. Frances McDormand as Miss Pettigrew is a capable actress but her British accent is woeful here. Nostalgia costumes and art deco lifts don't make a great movie and this one is a definite dud.

Morgan (2016)
Morgan is a sci-fi horror/thriller based in the near future where scientists have managed to create a genetic experiment in which an artificially superior humanoid has flourished, or so they think. Even though the movie Ex Machina deals with a similar storyline, this one is slightly different as can be seen with the twist right near the end. The plot has got some weaknesses no doubt, but nevertheless, it worked for me. It could have improved with better character development in the supporting cast. Anya Taylor-Joy as the title character does a good job. Kate Mara, Michelle Yeoh and Rose Leslie also fare well. An entertaining movie overall.

Foxcatcher (2014)
Based on a true story, this is about 2 Olympic gold winning wrestling brothers - David the eldest and Mark. Mark is struggling to make ends meet. He is flown to the estate of millionaire eccentric John Du Pont who offers to train him with all expenses paid. John Du Pont is driven by the need to impress his disapproving mother Jean who views wrestling as a low sport. Things begin to sour between Mark and John which ultimately leads to a shocking conclusion.

This is Channing Tatum and Steve Carell stretching out their acting skills. Mark Ruffalo is doing his normal good work. It's a quiet character study. The most interesting part of the movie is watching these actors inhabit these characters. However there isn't much tension in the drama. It's not what you might class as a sports movie but behind the scenes drama about relationship, isolation, loneliness and fight for self glory. If you don't know the real life story about what happened the ending will come as a big surprise.

Europa Report (2013)
This is a slow paced documentary style look at a mission to Europa, one of Jupiter's moons. The crew start to die one by one for various reasons and we look in on the drama from the perspective of CCTV and hand held cameras. The pace of the movie is very pedestrian but it kind of makes you relax as you watch it. Fair play to the director for not going down the easy route of injecting jump scares as the crew find they are not alone on the surface of the planet. There is genuine tension in the movie thanks to an ominous soundtrack and the eerie silence of the movie's setting. And, as always, less is more. Don't expect too much in the way of character development, however, you do come to feel for the members of the crew as various mishaps start to occur. A good low key found footage sci-fi movie even though it was fairly predictable. It's well worth checking out.

Mea culpa (2014)
A fast paced French thriller about the son of a disgraced former policeman who witnesses a murder by a vicious gang and finds himself targeted by them. His father and an ex-colleague from the police take matters into their own hands.

What a belter of a movie this is. There's barely a slow moment here, just constant thrills and excitement as the plot twists and turns along with frenetic action sequences. The cinematography is top notch and could quite easily show more than a few Hollywood directors how to shoot action that feels exciting, realistic, and fresh. Great acting by Vincent Lindon as the father trying to protect his son and ex-wife. Gilles Lellouche is also fantastic as Lindon's former partner who helps him out. A word of warning as well about a bull fight sequence which may upset some viewers. Overall, a top notch movie by French director Fred Cavaye.

An interesting documentary about the links between the food we eat to the epidemic of diseases such as diabetes that is taking place in many countries at the moment. It's easy for people to say that this documentary is just a promotion by vegans to encourage us to drop meat from our diet and adopt a plant based one instead. You just have to see the examples here to see that it works for some but it'll take a little bit more convincing to make me change my eating habits. Anyway, Kip Anderson who stars in and narrates the documentary goes around various companies to try and find out the things they don't want the general public to discover. None of the so-called big companies such as the American Heart Association come out looking rosy here. It's up to you what you take out from this movie - for some it might change their life, for others they'll just shrug it off as vegan propaganda and carry on as before. At least it'll make you think about what you eat. I thought it was really informative and I enjoyed it.

Not an installment of the British Carry On series but a HK comedy set in a high rise hotel with various silly slapstick going-ons taking place. Despite having a good cast such as Richard Ng and Eric Tsang as guests of the hotel, this isn't a very funny movie at all despite the goofiness on display. Certain moments managed to make me smile but it's not a laugh out loud movie. You'll find that the majority of the cast have performed in better HK comedies than this. The 90 mins passes by quickly though. Only take a look if you've got nothing better to see.

Pandora (2016)
With a heavy nod to the Fukushima disaster in Japan, this Korean movie is about an explosion and the nuclear meltdown that follows at an ageing power plant after an earthquake. It also focuses on the efforts by the workers already infected by radiation poisoning to stop the situation from getting worse and the sacrifices they make.

It's quite an emotional ride this movie with a lot of sadness and melodrama. I take it the director of the movie wanted to warn the human race of the risks that are involved by continuing to use nuclear fuel. It's definitely a very realistic and compelling story. It works out on multiple levels, because you are equally interested in what happens to the power plant and on a national scale, but at the same time you have an equal interest in the characters throughout the movie. There is a great sense of urgency and panic throughout and that really helped to cement the realism that permeates through the movie. If you enjoy disaster movies and you're a fan of Asian cinema, then you definitely owe it to yourself to sit down and watch this movie.

Basically this is the Japanese version of the X-Men except it is full of teenagers and it is definitely more dull. The story is about 2 groups of teenage mutants. Their parents were subjected to 2 different experiments by the government in the early 1990's in order to provoke their child into getting mutations. However, by using their new powers means they're not expected to live that long.

I wouldn't have minded this X-Men rip-off if it was interesting and exciting but it's not. The powers that each character has is great (such as one girl that uses the metal from her teeth braces as a weapon) but the story itself is rather dull and doesn't go anywhere. The fighting between the 2 mutant groups is acceptable at best although things pick up slightly when troops come in to try and eliminate all of the mutants. I didn't find the characters particularly engaging. They are dare I say rather bland and you don't seem to really care about them and their struggles. The idea with this movie was good but the execution didn't do it justice I'm afraid.

The Shout (1978)
This is a strange movie about a sinister man named Crossley who invades the lives of a man and his wife in a sleepy English town. He tells the story to a fellow scorer at a cricket match , and the viewer is left to try and disentangle it. Crossley tells the couple that he spent 18 years in the Australian outback, and that he killed his children when they were born. He also tells them he met a magical man in the outback, who taught him how to shout to kill. The scene when Crossley 'shouts' on the sand dunes is good. The shout kills sheep, birds and a shepherd. The ending is rather weird. Alan Bates is good as the creepy Crossley. John Hurt and Susannah York also perform well. It's an odd movie which might not appeal to everyone but it is still quite intriguing and unique to watch.

The Shack (2017)
This borefest concerns a grieving father who gets to meet with God at a mysterious shack. The first hour was kind of interesting but then I got bored. The viewer is stuck with the father and the magical black character. It becomes a lot of religious psychobabble and melodramatic tea service. The story should climax to a poignant and enlightening resolution. Instead, it rambles on and on endlessly. It might be filled with religious significance and debate but it's done in a terribly boring way. Certain people will enjoy it but I didn't. I thought it was a waste of 2 hours.

Whilst the rest of the UK shivers in the depths of Winter, the island of Fara find themselves in the midst of a searing heat wave. As bodies begin to pile up, found burnt to a crisp, a scientist struggles to convince the locals that they may be the victims of an invasion from space.

Directed by Terence Fisher, this sci-fi movie isn't half as bad as people have said about it over the years. The only thing that lets it down more than anything is the creatures themselves but then again this movie was made on a small budget. The movie has got a tense gripping plot with a good cast such as Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing involved. The ending and how the creatures are defeated is a big let-down though in my opinion. Still on the whole, it's an enjoyable production.
