Last Holiday (1950)
A forgotten gem starring the great Alec Guinness. He plays an under appreciated worker who is told he has a terminal disease so he packs his job up and goes on one last holiday to spend his hard earned money. Once at the hotel he finds new friends, gets offers for new jobs and sees his luck is in when he wins at a horse race and at cards.

This movie is the story of a man who believes he is dying and decides to go out in style - living it up among the wealthy and well-bred. After all, he figures, he certainly won't need the money after he's gone! The marvelous acting and experiences among the upper crust make this a must-see. However, be forewarned, this is an incredibly depressing movie. The haunting violin theme adds to the gloom. Alec Guinness delivers a perfect performance of George Bird, our main character whose luck changes from bad to worse to good to better and back again more than once throughout the movie. This is an excellent moody masterpiece that needs to be seen more by people.

The Limehouse Golem has a great deal going for it. It is based on the novel by Peter Ackroyd and then turned into a tight, witty and fairly gripping script by Jane Goldman. Bill Nighy takes the male lead as Inspector Kildare. He delivers a good performance of a gentle but tortured soul in a harsh world. Olivia Cooke as the protagonist also gives a good portrayal, mixing light and dark, truth and lies with a fine touch. Do not be misled by the Golem in the title. This is neither a horror story nor fantasy. It is a drama based on the reality of Victorian East London just prior to the reign of Jack the Ripper. It could have been a better mystery but overall I enjoyed it.

Breaking Away (1979)
This movie really captures what it means to be young and unsure of your future. It's a wonderful depiction of 4 Indiana men who try to grow up and make decisions about their futures. They all have their own problems to deal with but all need each other in dealing with their situations. Being outcasts in town, they turn to each other for hope and understanding. Also being "less privileged" than others their age, they learn to make the best of what they have...each other. Dennis Christopher leads this all-star cast in a movie that should be watched by the young and old. It is a compelling saga of how these young men conquer the ever-present problem of trying to fit in.

The plot of two people running from killers who dislike each other has been done too many times but still you can get a lot of out it with the rights actors, a good script and direction. This time we have two very good actors that are enjoying the fun as much as the viewer. Ryan Reynolds is the bodyguard who has to protect Samuel L Jackson, the hitman who has to testify against his former employer and run through the gauntlet of assassins out to get him; both are really good actors and both are really fun to watch (the chemistry between them is perfect and incredible); it is Jackson who gets the funnier bits most of the time. Salma Hayek is another that will make you laugh whenever she is on screen and deserves as much credit as the two male characters. I have no complaints against this movie at all - it was just a very solid all rounder that delivered big time.

I've never read the Dark Tower novels so I had no expectation what I was going to see in the movie. I know it's been panned by fans of the books and many film critics but it wasn't too bad. It may have its problems and it's not the best movie of the year. It is a fair movie that makes it worth watching. I am sure the books are epic and long and this movie only being an hour and a half sure does make it feel like they have took a lot out from the context. Obviously for a good reasoning they wanted to make the plot leaner and understandable for the audience that are not familiar with the Dark Tower world. The movie is never boring. It is entertaining throughout. The plot feels like there could have been more depth to the story and characters. The action is decent. There is lots of it. I thought Idris Elba as The Gunslinger was great too. Matthew McConaughey was also good as the villain. All in all, it wasn't bad nor terrible, it was your normal action- adventure/scifi type movie.

One of the better James Bond copycat movies that came out during the late 60's. Richard Johnson plays the suave and sophisticated Hugh "Bulldog" Drummond in much the same vein as Connery's 007. A super villain is using beautiful women to assassinate some oil company executives. Elke Sommers and Sylva Kocina are two of the sexy women on display. Some great set-pieces in the movie - the underground car park fight is surprisingly violent, while the chessboard finale is straight out of 'The Avengers' TV series. This movie is definitely on a par with the early Bond movies, hell even the quips from Drummond raise some laughs and there's no over the top gadget for the hero in sight. It was very entertaining and so enjoyable.

A young boy Phillip is a mystery to his parents as he hasn't spoken since childhood. He enjoys roaming the wild moors and the animals he encounters there. An elderly Colonel helps the boy to tame a beautiful white colt horse and to train a falcon. Slowly but surely these experiences coax young Phillip into coming out of his shell and talking once more.

With it's superb Dartmoor locations, this is a lovely family movie with Mark Lester brilliantly playing the autistic mute young boy Phillip. John Mills is even better in support, essaying the role of the kindly benefactor with skill and ease who believes that being at one with nature will help the boy and indeed it does. Gordon Jackson and Sylvia Sims play Lester's frustrated parents who have no idea how to properly communicate with their son. Future Bond girl Fiona Fullerton plays Phillip's female friend. The animals steal all the scenes they are in, especially the enchanting falcon. This is another movie highlighting the special bond that can be created between human and animal and how that friendship can be just as meaningful as one between humans. A beautiful movie featuring some very good performances.

Despite the title, this isn't about students battling with psychic powers, it's more of a romance movie with comedy and drama elements, and sci-fi undertones. It's about a new mysterious transfer student who arrives from the future and starts using his psychic abilities to influence those around him except for one guy who can somehow block his thoughts.

What surprises me most about this movie is how well the beautiful seaside town of Kamakura and the island of Enoshima come to life. It's exactly how it is in real life. The plot starts out a bit slow in that it's more of a character introduction. That's fine as the viewer gets to know their sorrow, happiness and embarrassment. Love and jealousy starts to rear it's ugly head up as well. It's only later that the sci-fi aspect of the movie kicks in. The pace really quickens after that and before you know it the climax has been reached. The movie may lack in originality as this kind of story has been done in the past but it's still good enough to check out.

Time of Eve (2010)
In the near distant future, humans have android slaves who do everything for them. A young man named Rikuo discovers that his woman-form android Sammy has a mysterious message in her activity logs-"Are you enjoying the time of eve?" Along with his friend Masaki, he finds that "Time of Eve" is actually a hidden café where humans and androids can meet and not discriminate one another. Rikuo discovers there might actually be the presence of feelings and a soul inside these androids that they hide and only let out in front of each other. His friend Masaki though thinks differently.

An interesting movie about the discrimination of androids and poses a question of will we have learned from the mistakes of the past such as what took place in Germany during WWII or segregation in the US during the 60's as the androids in the movie have a halo above their heads to mark them out from human beings. This isn't an anime movie for those that like fast paced storylines with action sequences. Not of that take place here, it's definitely a slow moving drama. The animation is beautiful with excellent level of detail. I really liked this movie - it's rather clever and unique with a thought provoking plot.

This is a movie about the true story of the independence of India. Set in 1947, Lord Mountbatten, played by a very convincing Hugh Bonneville had been appointed as the last Viceroy of India, his responsibility was to administer independence and the partition of India. What he didn't know when he arrived was that the plan had already been orchestrated by Winston Churchill. He was just there to deliver it. While the political drama is going on, there's another romantic sub-plot being played out between two Indian members of the palace staff, their differing religions making their relationship extremely difficult. At the end of the movie are displayed many grainy black and white photos explaining the consequences of the partition. 14 million people, more than at any other time in history were displaced and over a million died during the ensuing riots across India. Overall, a fascinating historical movie about a little-known facet of history.

A young Welsh girl fed up of living a drab and dreary life down in the South Wales valleys leaves to go to London in order to make it big as a model. However, her life unravels as her dreams don't come true.

A dark and downbeat kitchen sink drama with former Disney actress Janet Munro acting as the Welsh girl moving to London and being "used" by a couple of men. It's quite a slow paced drama and the worst thing is Munro's character is so unlikeable and self-centred. Nice location shots of Cardiff Castle, Central London and steam trains leaving Euston Station. It ends on a right downer with Munro's character killing herself but fails to explain why? Not sure if something's been cut or not in the version I saw? This is not a terrible movie but it's doesn't have much of anything to recommend it either.

Payroll (1961)
A gritty British crime movie set around the Newcastle area. A gang of criminals rob an armoured van full of money but things don't go according to plan.

The plotting of this noirish movie is very good and director Sidney Hayers keeps it flowing well at all times by providing a constant stream of action. The characters presented are all interesting in their own right and the interactions between the various members of the gang are good. The main character is Johnny Mellors; a streetwise criminal and the brains behind the heist that goes wrong. The grimy locations of the North East make a great backdrop for the movie: dirty alleyways, terrace houses, back street pubs, sweat stained garages etc. What's odd is even though this movie is set around Newcastle, no Geordie accents are ever heard! Overall it's a superior British crime thriller which is seriously underrated.

Tawny Pipit (1944)
The village of Lipsbury Lea suddenly springs to life when it is discovered that a pair of rare Tawny Pipit's are nesting in one of the local fields. As outside forces threaten to destroy one of nature's great achievements, the villagers rally around to stand defiant in Mother Nature's corner.

What a marvelous little movie this is with the subliminal message that nobody is going to change the English village way of life. It was shot in the Cotswolds and it shows superb views of the countryside - rolling hills and country lanes. There is some wartime propaganda in the story as a Russian female sniper who has shot 100 Germans comes to the village and is treated like a hero by the locals. Great acting by the whole cast. A lovely movie and shows an old fashioned way of living that would soon disappear.

A British sci-fi movie that started out well but went downhill after 20 mins. It's about a small silver sphere crashing to Earth which some scientists take in to their lab. Out of the sphere appears a humanoid alien with a claw hand who can miraculously drive a car and rent an office! This could have been a good movie but the further the movie went the worse it got. Nice to see a young John Saxon as one of the leads. This was originally a b&w movie but the version I saw had been colourised very badly. It looked cheap and nasty. Avoid this sci-fi movie apart from those who have insomnia. It's sure to make you fall asleep!

Broken (2012)
Bob is the separated father of three near feral girls who run riot both at school and at home. When Bob finds a condom that one of the girls has been innocently playing with he jumps to the wrong conclusion. Which culminates in him giving a beating to Rick the backward son of Mr and Mrs Buckley. This is witnessed by a 11 year old girl who goes by the nickname of Skunk and kickstarts an ultimately fatal chain of events.

If you enjoy Brit flicks in the mould of Mike Leigh or Shane Meadows this is a must see. Sparking on themes of love, loss, friendship and violence, this is a confident and unfussy directorial debut by Rufus Norris comfortably adapting to screen from the theatre. The way the story and characters interweave never feels contrived. The child actors are superb especially Martha Bryant as the youngest of the feral siblings who is outstanding. Eloise Laurence is also brilliant as Skunk. A gritty, beautifully made, completely believable gem of a movie.

Simon Templar goes up against the Italian Mafia when a British banker is murdered after he recongnises an old colleague who has turned into a Mafia boss.

This was originally a two part episode from Roger Moore's final season of The Saint that was made into a movie for the international market. It feels like a dress rehearsal for his portrayal of James Bond in that it's got the action taking place in an exotic location (Italy), has gorgeous women in Aimi MacDonald and Rosemary Dexter and has Ian Hendry as a decent villain. It's got a solid plot and is full of thrilling situations for Templar to escape from as the Mafia hunt him down. Moore gives a brilliant performance as Simon Templar - he's entertaining, humourous and at times can be ruthless to the villains. The Saint or Roger Moore fans will enjoy this very much.

A fascinating Japanese movie which has 3 threads running through it: a young woman Haruko seemingly vanishes outside a convenience store, another woman Aina starts sleeping around with various men and a gang of schoolgirls start assaulting men late at night. The movie is basically showing how women are treated by men in Japan and the way they feel diminished because of this treatment. In the instance of the girl gang, this is a metaphor for these women not taking anymore shit from men and striking back. They're not going to be the victims anymore. This movie can be a bit confusing as it goes back and forth between the past and present. Yu Aoi takes the leading role as Haruko and gives a great performance as she always does. Despite the fact that this may look like a feminist movie that is bigging up girl power, it's also an indicator of the sexist attitude by men that is prevalent in Japan today. A worthwhile movie to check out.

Jun Naruse refuses to speak again after telling her mother about her father's infidelity as a child and being blamed for the subsequent divorce. Years later and now a teenager in high school, Naruse learns to cope with her trauma and grow as a person by being chosen as the lead heroine in a musical production. The storyline of the musical mirrors what she went through as a child.

The movie beautifully displays the hardships of an adolescence in a broken family. The pain and blame that comes with divorce can be devastating. Naruse believes a curse has been placed on her for blabbering too much by a magical egg but that is all in her mind. The movie tries to convey that the power of words can not only inspire but they can also destroy and if left unresolved can affect a person for a long time. You can relate to the characters in the movie and there's a very interesting Japanese rendition of Over The Rainbow from the Wizard Of Oz with the lyrics having been changed. This movie could have been heavy with the subject of divorce but thankfully it isn't. I really liked this anime movie.

A great little British thriller about a young woman Jean who is "groomed" by a man she has only talked to over the telephone in a public box. Before long the man wants to meet up with the girl but in arranging this date she puts her younger sister at danger.

This movie is one you can definitely identify with what's taking place today with social media in which young girls are taken in by words of a stranger on internet chatrooms, Twitter etc. What makes this movie even more tense is there's a serial killer out there who has already murdered several young women. It's easy to imagine how young Jean on the cusp of adulthood and perhaps not used to getting attention from boys is sweet talked by a stranger who tells her all the right things she wants to hear. The director really knows how to make the viewer on the edge of their seat as the tension is ramped up to the maximum during the last 15 mins. Superb acting by the cast. A very thought provoking movie which is well worth seeing.

Loosely based on Othello, this drama which features a lot of jazz music is set in a London Docklands club in which a shit stirring drummer tries his best to split up an inter-racial marriage in order to form his own band. Patrick McGoohan gives a fascinating performance as the scheming drummer out to destroy things for his own gains. You can see the evil lurking behind his eyes. The acting is fairly good, but what makes it especially interesting is the fact that the action takes place against the back drop of a continuous jam session featuring solos by musicians such as Dave Brubeck and Tubby Hayes. All in all this is a very satisfying and unique interpretation of Shakespeare's play.

Based on a stage play, this British comedy finds Peggy Mount as the mother in law from hell who tries to interfere in her daughter's wedding to a sailor. This is a wonderful movie to see stars at the start of their careers such as Gordon Jackson, Thora Hird and the soon to be Bond girl Shirley Eaton. There are blink or you'll miss it uncredited cameos from Michael Caine and Paul Eddington. This is Peggy Mount's movie as she dominates the screen. She played the battle axe so well. If you enjoy and appreciate British classic comedy movies then you should give it a go, anyone who says otherwise is really missing the point and doesn't understand British comedy at all.

Eliminators (2016)
A fairly good generic action movie set in London starring martial artist Scott Adkins and former WWE wrestler Wade Barrett. Adkins plays a former US agent now relocated to a witness protection programme in the UK along with his daughter. When some inept thugs break into his home, Adkins kills them and is then arrested. When his face is plastered in the news, his cover is blown. The crime boss he betrayed wants revenge and to be reunited with his granddaughter. He has hired Europe's top hit-man to do the job.

You'll have to forgive the numerous plotholes in the movie and just concentrate on the action. Barrett and Adkins face off throughout the movie as Adkins tries to get to his daughter before her deranged grandfather does. The movie makes good use of some London locations with Barrett turning out to be an effective enough villain. The action choreography is quite decent if gunfights and one-on-one combat is your kind of thing. Overall, a perfectly watchable fast paced movie to while away 90 mins.

This is the abridged movie version of the short lived little known ITV drama series that aired back in 1974. The story is about the hunt for a missing wad of cash with links to old-time gangster Al Capone. Various interested parties are interested in the money, and a series of brutal murders reveals that some of them are willing to do just about anything to get their hands on it. The story is presided over by Glyn Owen and Peter Sallis as a couple of officials chasing after the mysterious villains of the piece, with John Thaw in a star-making turn as the belligerent suspect determined to find the murderer himself. This is a low budget affair that nonetheless provides adequate viewing material. Despite a lot of scenes with just talking in it, I rather enjoyed the story.

Target Earth (1954)
An advance party of a robot army from Venus has invaded Earth and choosing Chicago to attack first. The city has been evacuated but some folks have been left behind. The action switches back from the story of 4 people to the scientists and military trying desperately to find a way to defeat these seemingly invincible metal creatures.

The movie's opening, in the abandoned, nameless city, is well done and I hoped it would set the tone for the rest of the movie but it doesn't. What follows – sadly enough – isn't an intense fight for survival against the alien opponents, but a tedious and dull portrait of a handful of people hiding in an abandoned hotel room and waiting. If you're after a story with a lot of action against the robots then you're going to be disappointed. Only 1 robot is ever shown and yes, judging by today's special effects it does look useless but in the mid 50's it was probably great. Sadly the movie didn't turn out to be a sci-fi gem I was expecting.

In the early 1950's a motley group of English tourists fly off to visit Paris for a weekend. The movie retraces what happens to each of them during their short stay in Paris. It's a chance to see Paris during its "golden age" the 1950's (so different from nowadays - the streets of the city are so empty of traffic!). It's a fun little adventure with Alastair Sim on form as usual. Margaret Rutherford is her usual dippy, wonderful self and a host of other 50's household British names pop up (including Christopher Lee and Jimmy Edwards) in this easy to watch little adventure. There are some very fine moments in this multi-threaded movie, and some genuine pathos along with all the good-natured comedy. Well worth seeing for those who are interested in the British stars of that era.

A classic film noir. A returning war veteran comes home to find that his wife has cheated on him. He storms off in the pouring rain where he is picked up by a woman in a car. He finds out that his wife has been murdered and he is the prime suspect. He tries to evade the law and some gangsters to find out who killed her.

This is another Alan Ladd/Veronica Lake movie (their third of the decade) but William Bendix steals the show as a G.I. who suffered brain damage during the war. Doris Dowling is effective as Alan Ladd's wife who is a right bitch. Veronica Lake is at her stunning best. She had a unique look and voice. This is a pretty good crime story which will keep you guessing till the end.

Controversial at the time of it's release but seems quite tame now. An American businessman, Carson has been sent over the Atlantic in search of his fiancée Melina, who has been enveloped by a Chelsea beatnik gang. He is sent on a wild goose chase around the city but the truth about Melina is far more sinister. What happened to Melina forms the crux of the storyline and eventually the mystery is revealed through some flashbacks.

The reason that this movie was so controversial centres around a party in which a drunk Melina stumbles from some stairs and hits the ground head first which knocks her out. The rest of her drunken friends strips her clothes off whilst a man kisses and fondles her which he later regrets as he throws himself off a roof the next day. The leader of the beatnik gang is played by Oliver Reed with his brooding presence in which he mocks the rest of the gang members. None of them have any reedeming qualities and are happy to just waste their time. The worst one of them all is a musician called Geronimo played by Randall & Hopkirk's Mike Pratt. His American accent is ridiculous. This movie won't be for everybody's taste but fans of Oliver Reed should check out his performance here.

Shippû rondo (2016)
A single father of a teenage boy has to retrieve a stolen deadly biological weapon K-55 from a huge ski complex. Instead of doing the logical and right thing to do, which would be to call the cops, he is sent to the ski resort, pretending to have a ski vacation with his grumpy son. His plan is to try to ski around and find the marker (a teddy bear) for the tree under which the weapon is buried.

A movie that doesn't really know whether to be a farce or a drama. It has a great cast in the usually reliable Abe Hiroshi and former AKB48 idol Yuko Oshima. There are some laughs to be had mostly with Abe Hiroshi bumbling around on skis and falling into holes. A nice ski chase shot with a Go-Pro on the head also helps things along plus the beautiful snowy scenery around the Nozawa Onsen ski resort is lovely to look at. Unfortunately the plot just peters out by the end so you don't really care if the good guys have got the weapon or not. Hiroshi does his best with the script but he does look at times to be somewhat bored. It's not too bad of a movie and it moves along nicely but it definitely could have been a lot better with a more polished script.

If you like full throttle action sequences set in a Richard Matheson world then this is the movie for you. The story isn't original at all - your typical lethal virus has mutated humans into being fast zombies who crave for blood and hate sunlight. It's the action scenes that are the best thing in the movie and it looks like a specialist of some sort has come in to make them look realistic. A strong cast led by Johnny Strong and Lance Henriksen give decent performances. Considering the low budget of this movie, its remarkable how much can be done with so little. Although you don't see anything new, this is still a good action-packed horror and the frantic pace makes sure you won't get bored at all. Worth taking a look.

Arthur's Dyke (2001)
Three friends meet up after 20 years to recreate a long distance walk they did along Offa's Dyke which runs along the border of England and Wales. Along the way they pick up a middle aged woman who wants to leave the drudgery of her life and find something to give her a jolt.

A very good little known British comedy which makes you want to do a long distance walk yourself. It's full of incredible scenery of the countryside and I'm sure ramblers will be able to identify a lot with the characters. The cast is excellent. Robert Daws plays the obnoxious Arthur to great effect, bullying the others along. He tries desperately to relive his younger days, attempting to sleep with any woman that passes his way. Richard Graham plays a man that may be terminally ill and finally has the courage to come out as gay to his friends. Nicholas Farrell and Pauline Quirke round up the rest of the main characters. The ending may appear a little strange but works well with the story that had unfolded throughout. I really wanted it to finish with Janet reaching the end of the dyke at Prestatyn. A quirky and fun comedy which I really enjoyed.

Mrs. Miniver (1942)
Awful propoganda movie aimed at the American market during WWII about a family living in a village somewhere in England when war breaks out. How it managed to win several Academy Awards I really don't know as it is vastly overrated. It comes across as very dated and way too slow paced for most viewers. I almost fell asleep during the first hour, which was the most boring. The sets are completely inaccurate and even the first scene shows a double decker bus which wasn't even British. Even the inside of the Miniver's home is nothing like what most British families were like. The acting is stiff and the British accents played by the American cast is terrible. It probably helped in putting across to the Americans what the Brits were going through during the war but this is a poor, slow and disappointing movie.

The sequel to the yakuza comedy sees director Takashi Miike at his wacky best which sees undercover police agent Reiji finally being accepted as one of the Todoroki yakuza family member but his superiors at the police think he may have gone over to the dark side. A Chinese mafia gang The Dragon Skulls is trying to take over Todoroki territory which sees Reiji on a collision course with them.

This is a typical crazy surreal Miike movie with lots of laughs. The main character of Reiji gets up to all kinds of shenanigans from his boss' daughter trying to cosy up to him to fighting a sexy Chinese girl with a whip. The movie is populated by crazy characters, eye-popping costumes, and fabulous set design. The jokes on the whole are visual, though you will have to enjoy them all being sometime painfully at Reiji’s expense, usually involving his dick! Toma Ikuta is great as Reiji though his face gurning and over-reaction to some situations might grow tiresome to some viewers. The movie also drags at 2hrs and 8 mins long. There was no need to stretch the story out. It doesn't matter as this is Takashi Miike in fine form and the movie did make me laugh so it did it's job.

In Cornwall, a beautiful princess is kidnapped by an evil wizard and taken away to his kingdom. A young man, Jack goes to rescue her.

The story line is familiar and, yes, it does seem to be a hodge-podge of a variety of legends and myths, but what's to complain about? Many movies borrow from a host of differing source material, often with surprisingly good results. It's true that the stop-motion effects for the creatures shown isn't quite up to Ray Harryhausen standards but they're still done very well and quite effective. In the end, it's an entertaining fantasy movie with a good story and great action scenes.

The Lodger (1944)
This is the remake of Hitchcock's 1927 movie which takes place in London during the murderous reign of Jack The Ripper. An unusual man rents a couple of rooms in an affluent household with the landlady beginning to suspect he might be the Whitechapel murderer.

I loved this tense and atmospheric movie and it ticks all the right boxes of how Victorian London should be portrayed during the time of the Ripper - fogbound, dark alleys and women fearing for their lives that they could be the next victim. Laird Cregan who died very young at 28 years old plays the mysterious lodger. He looks menacing with those dark penetrating eyes. Merle Oberon is lovely as the stage singer Kitty Langley that the lodger wants to be his next victim. The suspense lies in how and where he will be caught and whether or not he will be successful in killing Miss Oberon. It stems back to the lodger's brother who died and this was linked to a beautiful woman. All in all this is a movie that keeps you in its grip from beginning to end, largely due to Cregar's outstanding performance in the title role and the excellent recreation of Victorian London and its gaslit atmosphere. Definitely worthy of seeking out.

Snatched (2017)
An enjoyable comedy despite the bad ratings it's had mainly due I suppose to Amy Schumer and her political rants. Anyway, this movie had me laughing at times. There are some well-timed jokes in this movie, and the delivery itself sometimes is spot on. Amy and Goldie Hawn were great as mother and daughter. OK so this wasn't her best role, but Hawn's first big screen appearance in a long time was a lot of fun to watch. Joan Cusack and Wanda Sykes were also cool as a duo who try and help the mother/daughter out of a tight spot. The cinematography showing the countryside of Ecuador is beautiful. Snatched may not be the best comedy this year by a long shot but it's still worth checking out.

Girls Trip (2017)
This was an absolute blast from start to finish and filled with non stop laughs. While everyone has funny moments throughout the movie, the real star of the show is Tiffany Haddish. She delivers the funniest one liners, punchlines, every-lines. Certain people are calling this a black Bridesmaids movie and whilst there are some similarities to it I can safely say that this was funnier. So what if the plot isn't original, it's not the story that you've come for in this type of movie it's the comedy and boy does it deliver in spades. The 4 leads are brilliant together. If you enjoy raunchy comedies then you've got to see this movie. I loved it.

A group of tourists become trapped on an island with an evil botanist who has crossbred plants to create a giant vampire tree which feeds by draining the blood of people. The group of tourists begin to die, some killed by the plant, others murdered.

The script in this movie is laughably bad, the plot is thin and none of the characters ever really get well developed. There are all sorts of clichés here that just don't work well in this movie and the dubbing from the Spanish isn't that great. But I could forgive all of this if it was entertaining. This one isn't. It just dragged on and never managed to really grab my interest at all.

After The Blair Witch Project came out, a rash of similar movies were made and this is one of them and not a particularly good one either. It's a mock documentary of a group of teenagers spending a night at a haunted mansion where all kinds of 'spooky' things take place. This movie is dull with laughable dialogue, shitty acting, it's so cliched and full of pathetic jump scares. You don't particularly care for anybody in the entire group. I would be ashamed to put out something this bad out. A terrible movie and might be the worst I've seen this year. It should be consigned to the incinerator!

A brilliant Japanese romance movie with a twist. A lot of this kind of movie will have somebody either dying from an illness or something like that. This one though has a fresh dilemma to the plot. Takatoshi Minamiyama plucks up the courage to ask a pretty girl Emi out on a date when he spots her on a train. Everything goes according to plan and they start dating regularly until Emi reveals her secret. She comes from another world where time is running backwards to our own. Quite a unique and original concept. They can only meet for 1 month every 5 years (don't ask why as it's never explained). The main point of the movie after Takatoshi learns the truth is how they respond, and what they do about it. It's heart breaking to watch as the countdown to their inevitable parting ticks down. Excellent acting from the 2 leads and the movie ends on a happy note as well. Very enjoyable and definitely worth watching.

This is a refreshing change of direction by Takashi Miike. The movie is based on a true story in which a Japanese doctor Koichiro goes voluntarily to work in Kenya. As he encounters many desperate situations and makes friends with the people there he doesn't feel the need to go back to Japan. Each time he decides he wants to leave, eventually he always comes back. You see a lot of children with amputated limbs because of the civil war that takes place and they used them as shields. The story ends on a sad and tragic note though I won't spoil what happens. The acting by the cast is incredible especially by Takao Osawa who portrays Koichiro. His kind and smiling demeanour helps the patients as they recover from their terrible wounds. The movie even though it runs for well over 2 hours, it never drags and is always interesting. I really enjoyed this movie and well done to Takashi Miike for showing how versatile he really is.

Maniac Hero (2016)
Nakatsu is an unhappy convenience-store clerk who is fed up with how the unruly and criminals are running the streets. The police are doing nothing about it. One night he comes across red-stocking-capped Toshida who has some cool gadgets and martial arts skills. Nakatsu suggests they team up to clean the streets at night. Soon they are joined by sexy schoolgirl Kaori and a middle-aged guy Kusaki who is armed with two hammers that come out of his sleeves. The media starts calling them "The Phantom Hangers" because they string up the criminals they beat up!

This is a violent action comedy about a couple of people trying to make a difference in their neighbourhood but falling foul of their success by trusting a shady businessman who reveals his true colours. I was expecting a rather silly slapstick comedy but the director doesn't go down that route at all. It does have some laughs but mostly it's played pretty straight. Sometimes the movie does come across as a poor man's Kick-Ass minus the costumes and masks. The laughs tend to die down in the second half when things gets a bit heavy and a bit bloody. I liked the characters and each of them have painful pasts they'd like to forget. Overall, it wasn't too bad a comedy. It would have been better with more laughs but I was entertained sufficiently.

Jack Warner is a war hero turned criminal who is handcuffed to a young man and on the run together. A newspaper reporter and his new wife is called by his boss on his honeymoon to get a scoop on the manhunt. Jack Warner, is excellent in the lead role, playing against type. He is ably supported by a young George Cole. The movie also has a lively pace about it, and is well staged, with the outdoor locations lending a good balance to the proceedings. Warner's character grows more desperate as the net begins to close all around him. Quite an enjoyable thriller.

Jake The Snake Roberts was one of my favourite wrestlers in the late 80's/early 90's. I'd read that he'd fallen on hard times since his glory years by dabbling in drugs and alcohol and it was hard seeing footage of him in such a state. This is a documentary of redemption. It's about a man that wants to turn around his life and doesn't want to be another statistic of a wrestler that's died way too young. His old friend Diamond Dallas Page reaches out to him and together they go on a journey as Jake battles his inner demons and with DDP's Yoga gets him back into being sober, healthy and in some kind of shape. There are pitfalls along the way but Jake is willing to work hard not just for himself but for his family. DDP's unyielding support to his friend is very touching. It was nice to see DDP also helping out Scott Hall - another wrestler that alcohol had taken over his life. The change that both these wrestlers goes through is remarkable from both a mental and physical standpoint. I got emotional at the end seeing how far both of them had come over 18 months. Naturally people will think this documentary is only for wrestling fans but it isn't. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie as I was a huge fan of all three of these men.

Death Note (2017)
Talk about screwing up a classic! As a fan of the anime and Japanese movies this is a big disappointment and an insult to the original material. Everything that made the first Death Note movie so good is thrown out of the water. The events of the story were changed so drastically I forgot that I was watching Death Note. The characters are nothing how they're supposed to be. Seeing L being irrational and angry was so unlike him. I should've known better that this adaptation would be botched - Hollywood just can't do remakes of Japanese movies. Save yourself the misery and never watch this. Go watch the Japanese movies instead.

The Veil (2016)
A poor horror which shamelessly depicts a horrific event in American history as some mystical supernatural event to make a "scary movie". Basically it's about a film crew taking a female survivor back 25 years later to the scene of a massacre much like the one in Jonestown. Even the cult leader is similarly named - Jim Jacobs. And how far has Jessica Alba fallen that she has to star in such a crappy movie? This movie had a very elementary plot that didn't take much thought at all and a bunch of b-list actors. If awful is synonymous with scary then that it was. Of course there were the mandatory jump scares but besides that it offered no real content and no real substance. Steer clear of this disaster.

This is a black comedy crime-thriller starring Simon Pegg as a hitman hired to kill a businessman's cheating wife with the story being told from three different points of view. Pegg is great as the movie's main villain; and it's nice to see him playing against type for a change. The supporting cast is all adequate as well, and the directing is decent. The script is somewhat clever, and it also has a few nice twists, but it's nothing too memorable. It's still worth taking a look.

There's been a talking donkey and a horse over the years and this one is about a talking lion Frasier who opens up about his lovelife to help his friend Professor Marvin Feldman in a lion safari park. Only Marvin can hear Frasier talk. This is about as bad as it can get. At least with Mr Ed and Francis they had the wit to make people laugh but this one is just dull as hell with hardly any laughs. As if a lion could give a human some advice on how to woo the ladies! The movie is based on a real lion that fathered 35 cubs when he was old and weak and was seen as a bit of a sex symbol. His virility in his advancing years drew admirers from male pensioners and became quite a celebrity. The movie looks like a Disney cast-off with poor acting. A wretched movie if ever I saw one.

Ibiza Undead (2016)
An absolute stinker of a Brit horror comedy that tries too hard to be a mix of The Inbetweeners and Shaun Of The Dead. It's difficult to say something positive about this movie - that's how bad it is but without Ed Kear as wise cracking Big Jim whose lines can be funny this would have fallen completely flat. The movie is badly written with terrible acting. The movie did start off well but after 15 mins I could tell that it was going downhill and it never recovered. It really isn't worth bothering with this movie.

Ghostheads (2016)
This is a cool documentary on how the two original Ghostbusters movies have a positive impact on people's lives (the super fans) - and more than that, how they can use it to promote goodness in their community. It's not a documentary that sets out to poke fun at those who strap on proton packs in public. They're just normal people who found something incredible in these movies that enriched their lives. For some, watching the movies changed their lives for the better. It explores the fandom, friendships and personal stories of these devotees. It's likely that there will be people who are going to hate on this documentary, thinking the fans in it are losers but each to their own. If it makes them happy then so be it. I enjoyed this a lot and anyone that is slightly curious about what sort of person would throw on a proton pack and dedicate their life to Ghostbusters will like it too.

Shallow Hal (2001)
One of the Farrelly Brothers' best movies. It's laugh out loud funny, and yet has a very well delivered message about internal and external beauty without being preachy. Gwyneth Paltrow as Rosemary manages to convey emotion through the fat suit and that is no mean feat. Jack Black as Hal is just right for the role that deservedly made him a star. The supporting cast is excellent from Jason Alexander to all those who play all the various characters. This is just an over-all great comedy movie.
