A classic Japanese alien invasion movie with an anti-war message to it. The movie opens with a UFO sighting, and a passenger plane being knocked out of the sky and forced to crash land in a quarry. From there, evil starts to infect the survivors of the airplane, and a desperate battle for survival is on. All levels of conflict ensue: characters turn against each other, the environment, and even themselves. This isn't one of those typical rubber suit movies where a giant beast smashes everything in sight while being shot at by toy airplanes. This is a slick, well-done horror/sci-fi that blends many elements and does it well. A bit of a downbeat ending with a big invasion fleet in space heading towards planet Earth. A lost gem of the horror/sci-fi genre, worth seeing.

Based on a true story set during the early stages of the Korean War, it's about a group of South Korean soldiers who have to infiltrate into the North Korean army and find out where mines have been laid outside the waters of Incheon in order for a land invasion of Allied troops led by General MacArthur played by Liam Neeson. The dramatic story is full of action and supported by a good screenplay, direction and performances. I will admit that I had little to zero knowledge before going into this and it does teach a bit of history which might not matter to a lot of people. It might not be the best war movie I've seen from Korea over the years but I enjoyed it and it was entertaining enough.

Lowlife Love (2015)
A drama about the people operating in the lower levels of the Japanese movie industry. It is somewhat based on what the writer of the movie has seen and heard over the years from working in the industry. It's about a director still trying to live off his reputation from making an indie movie years ago but too lazy to really direct a second. He also runs an acting school for deluded actresses to whom he promises roles in his next movie but in actually all he's really interested is bedding them. The movie is controversial due to it's treatment of women. It's an interesting movie showing how people are used and abused in the industry but if you're pretty smart you can use that to your advantage which is what the female lead Minami does. A worthwhile watch.

Quiz Show (1994)
This drama is mostly riveting and it has an interesting story to tell. It's a well-directed movie by Robert Redford. The acting is great by everybody. My only problem is this movie runs a little too long and it seems stale at some points. It's based on a true story. In 1958, NBC started a game show craze especially with their hit show 21. When champion Herb Stampel is kicked out and replaced by the popular Charles Van Doren, NBC comes under fire as it's revealed that the champions may have been given the answers to the questions.

As mentioned before, the acting is phenomenal. John Turturro and Ralph Fiennes are great in their respective roles as the champions. David Paymer certainly makes a slimy guy. Overall it was a good movie about corruption and it was mostly entertaining.

Imperium (2016)
A young FBI agent, eager to prove himself in the field, goes undercover as a white supremacist. Imperium is not a movie that is going to win you over at first and it's definitely not some Oscar winning contender but it's a pretty interesting and watchable thriller and Daniel Radcliffe's performance is good and you can easily see his dedication on the movie but everyone else is just very generic, one note and very bland. It does have some good moments here and there and Radcliffe's performance is good as I said but don't expect anything more than just that.

Lassie (2005)
I've watched various movies featuring the dog Lassie over the years and this one is just as good as them. Set during the onset of WWII in Yorkshire, Lassie the rough collie is sold by a poor family to a Duke who takes her up to Scotland. There she escapes and makes her down back South to reunite with her young master. It's a wonderful heartwarming family movie. The scenery and cinematography is homely, wild and beautiful and the cast is excellent which includes Peter O'Toole. You will find yourself rooting for the lovable dog and will I think be more than satisfied with the ending! Be prepared to shed a few tears as well. If you aren't an animal lover this is certainly not for you, but if you have a soft spot for our furry friends you will definitely like it. If you have ever had a faithful dog as a pet it should touch you particularly - it celebrates the loyal nature of the canine and the fulfilling relationships humans can build with them. Recommended.

A Dirty Shame (2004)
An absolutely abysmal John Waters sex-comedy about a middle aged woman called Sylvia Stickles who after a meeting with a mystical tow truck driver and a bump on the head, becomes transformed into a sex addict. From here on the whole town seem getting "bumps" on the head and the whole place becomes an uncontrollable sex mad den.

It really is bottom of the barrel stuff, more cringe-worthy than funny. What on earth attracted a pretty good cast to this appalling junk is a mystery. The whole movie is full of over the top annoying characters and seems to go on and on forever. Avoid at all costs.

Winter (2015)
This is a drama about a successful painter who has a breakdown following the tragic death of his wife. The story follows how this affects the lives of his two boys. A sparse and haunting soundtrack is the perfect accompaniment to this bleak drama. Tommy Flanagan is great as the husband struggling to cope with his enormous grief despite knowing that it is affecting his children. Tom Payne is also good as the responsible older brother. Although this movie lacks standout moments it always holds your attention thanks to it's fine cast. As you'd expect this is not a fun movie to watch but does a great job of showing how hard grief can hit us all. Winter is a very good emotional drama done on a small budget. Recommended.

I haven't seen Ultraman Ginga The Series and judging by this disaster of a movie I don't think I want to either. It's a poor tokusatsu movie full of annoying teenage characters. From what I can gather, the plot revolves around a weird energy that makes toy monsters that have faced Ultraman Ginga in the past come alive. Somehow as well, some evil Ultramen are created and face off against their good counterparts. It's all a bit of a car wreck and I was completely bored by it all. Has to be one of the worst tokusatsu movie I've ever seen. Terrible.

A sub-par Carry-On style farce centering on students at a dental school. Kenneth Connor plays a thief who pilfers some dentistry tools after going to the wrong premises and tries to flog them on to the students led by Bob Monkhouse. When the police start sniffing about that the tools might be at the school, the students start to panic.

After a good start, the movie goes downhill fast and never recovers. For a so-called comedy there isn't much in the way of laughs to be had especially during the second half. The problem lies with the script itself which was unfortunately co-written in some scenes by Bob Monkhouse himself. I have no problem with the cast who do the best they can with the material given to them. Not worth watching if I'm perfectly honest.

The 8th F&F movie is a bit of a step down from the last couple of movies and IMO should have stopped at the last one but with it pulling over a billion dollars at the box office over the world I guess money talks and they've made this one. It's the most ludicrous and far-fetched entry yet in the franchise. On saying that, it's still an enjoyable fun and mindless action movie with a stellar cast, which continues the escalating mayhem of previous entries. The action for the most part is well directed and often spectacular. Jason Statham and Dwayne Johnson add great presence to the movie and really elevate the scenes they are in. The scene with Jason Statham and a baby probably being the stand out scene in the movie. I didn't think Charlize Theron made for a memorable villain. If you're a long time fan of the series you're definitely going to enjoy this movie. Is there still enough steam in the franchise for it to carry on? Well that'll depend on how well it does at the box office but it wouldn't surprise me to see another F&F movie in the near future.

April Fools (2015)
A collection of several stories about people lying which takes place on April Fool's Day in Japan - a pregnant woman holding people hostage at a cafe with a gun as her lover tries to seduce somebody else there, an elderly couple from the Royal Family visit a hamburger joint, a teenage boy at school who is convinced that he's about to be taken away by aliens, a gangster who kidnaps a teenage girl but doesn't want any ransom money and there are a couple of others not worth mentioning. It somehow tries to say that it's fine to lie on this day! I'm not sure if this movie is a comedy or a drama and I'm not sure the filmmakers knew either when making it. There are several humourous moments but not enough to give anybody any belly laughs. A problem I've always found with these kind of Japanese movies is they tend to go on for far too long and this one is a prime example. There a big ensemble cast in this movie and I'd say the one that stands out most is Erika Toda. It's not a movie that I'd really recommend to anybody but one to watch perhaps on a dull and rainy Sunday afternoon.

Apparently this was the 1st Japanese movie to have a vampire as a villain in a modern setting. Japanese vampires aren't the same as those in the West...well not this one anyway. Firstly it's the light of a full moon that transforms the person into a vampire, it's reflection can be seen in mirrors and holy crosses doesn't seem to affect it. Oddly enough it doesn't seem to drink a lot of blood either! It's an enjoyable enough tale about a woman that returns after being missing for 20 years and she hasn't aged at all. For an 80 min movie the pace is brisk and there's plenty of action. It tries though to mix elements of old Western horror movies a bit too much for my liking instead of concentrating on the vampire genre. It comes down to a climax in which the family of the woman confronts the vampire at his cave lair in the country. It's a bit of a hotchpotch this movie in the end but old school horror fans have plenty to keep them entertained.

A wonderful debut from director Amir Lily Amirpour. Shot on a shoe-string in gorgeous black and white, this is a funny, dead-pan, creepy, punky, sweet, sly, smart, violent, sexy, mysterious, loaded with style, and the most off-beat celebration of feminism and girl-power I may have ever seen on screen. Great use of music too. It's a vampire story set in an alternate universe that looks like barren, poor, poverty stricken post-industrial America, but where everyone speaks Farsi, and our anti-heroine wears a chador while skateboarding through the night. At it's heart this is an odd, sort-of love story between a feminist avenger vampire and a lost young guy who is burned out with caring for his heroin-addict father. Sheila Vand is excellent as the vampire somehow managing to be fragile and sinister at the same time. I was glad to have seen this stylish movie.

I'm a big fan of the various GITS anime movies and series that's been released over the years. I came into this movie expecting to be disappointed by it all but I came out feeling more positive. OK, it will NEVER surpass the original movie and I know that with all the controversy about whitewashing etc there will be always be haters but if you do intend to see this movie don't try to compare it to the original. Of course it's gonna be different but come into this movie with an open mind and I think you'll be surprised but how good it is.

Much has been said about Scarlett Johansson's casting as The Major but I can seriously say she did a great job. I also enjoyed Beat Takeshi as Aramaki and Pilou Asbaek as The Major's partner Batou. Visually, the movie is absolutely stunning and the action sequences are exciting. Although the movie wasn't filmed in Japan, the neon skyline of Hong Kong serves the story well. The storyline has been tweaked slightly from the original but it doesn't really make a difference. So on the whole I give this Hollywood remake a thumbs up. I hope there'll be a sequel as it deserves one.

More shenanigans at a boarding school for boys in South Africa in the early 90's as Spud and his gang (The Crazy 8) are targeted by their house teacher who will do anything to get them all expelled. As this movie doesn't have to establish any of the characters, the movie dives right into their mischief and escapades. However, the bullying is nastier, more malicious in nature and has far greater consequences. John Cleese returns as Spud's beloved book teacher and Troye Sivan delivers a more subdued and angst-filled performance as the title character. This movie is a lot of fun and just as good as the first movie with it's larger than life characters. Give it a shot.

This is the sequel to the original movie that came out in 2015 which I haven't seen yet. It's yet another dull and generic Japanese slasher movie based on a game / manga. A group of teenagers go back in time through the use of a finger bone to try and save their classmates who were killed by a weird looking young girl in the first movie. If seeing teenagers running about in dark school corridors being picked off in various bloody ways is your thing then you'll enjoy this movie but I'd rather see something with an interesting storyline and a cast than can act rather than this piece of crap. A total waste of time.

You'd expect Reg Varney of On The Buses fame to give a hilarious or maybe even a bawdy performance in this type of movie but we see another side of him in this tragic comedy. He gives a genuinely affecting performance as Sherry - an aging cross dressing entertainer at a holiday camp. It's an emotionally hard hitting piece as Sherry fails to realise that his career is coming to an end and his endless boasting of having performed in front of the Queen fails to convince people that he still has a future. The plot goes down a dark path towards the climax as Sherry's world comes crumbling down. Reg Varney gives one of his best performance of his career in this movie. I was surprised as I expected him to portray a cheeky rude character similar to his most famous role of Stan Butler. For those that want to see a different and slightly serious side of Varney check out this underrated movie.

Summertime (2015)
This movie is about a forbidden love between two women and very much aimed at celebrating feminism in France during the 70's. It gives us an insight into the struggles for equal rights faced by women at the time and celebrating female empowerment centered around a beautifully engaging love story between the two main characters. There is undeniably a strong chemistry between both the central characters which engrosses the audience, from the moment they meet. French filmmaker Catherine Corsini has crafted a beautiful movie with gorgeous shots of the country around Limousin and superb performances from Izia Higelin and Cecile De France as the main leads. The soundtrack has some songs by Janis Joplin which enhances the movie. The movie is a human drama that grabs you from the start to the end and well worth taking a look at.

This movie was a critical and box office success at the time due in part to what was some fairly straight forward dialog about sex. It also had an Oscar winning performance from the French actress Simone Signoret. Looking at it now I can't see what the big fuss was all about. The plot is about a man conducting a love affair with two women. He's only going with one as he wants to climb the greasy pole at his workplace and her family is rich. I didn't find the movie to be engaging at all and found my interest waning. The cinematography showing the grimy streets of a Northern town in the late 50's is interesting enough. The acting isn't special and not sure why Signoret was chosen for an Oscar for her performance here. Yes, she's competent enough in her role but enough to recieve a gong? No, I don't think so. It's only an average movie in the end which doesn't justify the numerous plaudits that's been given to it.

Ilo Ilo (2013)
This movie does a good job of portraying the life of a middle-class Singaporean family. Set during the 1997 financial crisis, it revolves around one family's everyday struggles and their uneasy relationship with their newly hired Filipino maid. With both parents busy working, naughty 10-year-old Jiale is left to the maid's care. His antics get her into trouble, but they gradually form a close bond. Pregnant with a second child, the mother struggles to cope with the demands of work and family. The father is retrenched and despite all his efforts, is unable to find a job with comparable pay, forcing the family to cut back significantly.

Although there was no proper storyline, the movie was engaging throughout and zoomed in on the struggles that each character faced. Angeli Bayani is superb as Teresa the maid. I loved watching the jealousy that was developing from the mother as her son starts to bond with Teresa. A fantastic debut for director Anthony Chen.

A tragic action-adventure movie about a mentally challenged man who works as a traffic sign holder by day, but who becomes Defendor by night. Armed with his club, marbles, firecrackers, and angry hornets, Defendor emerges from his secret hideout, helping others and stopping punks, in his effort to find Captain Industry and bring him down. His exploits pique the interests of a girl, a family, and eventually a whole town. By his youthful wisdom, determined and fearless bravery, he gains many admirers who voice support for his cause. Woody Harrelson and Kat Dennings give amazing performances. Even though more people enjoy Kick Ass as it's similar you'd be a fool to miss out on this movie.

London Town (2016)
This is a fabulous coming of age story, set against the back drop of London in the 70's and the music of The Clash. The movie is cleverly put together with a great mix of humour, emotion, gritty reality and music of The Clash. The plot is about a teenage boy who faces a series of misfortunes, and ends up having to make a living while taking care of his young sister. He perseveres through the hardship, and meets the famous rock star from The Clash, and his life is changed for the better. The acting is great particularly Daniel Huttlestone as Shay, although little Alice steals the show more than once! Jonathan Rhys Meyers could be Joe Strummer, with his attitude and great voice. A very entertaining and watchable movie.

Hollywood-slick rendering of the classic myth/story of star crossed lovers out of Britain's Dark Ages: the clandestine match of the orphaned nephew of an English Lord and the daughter of the King of Ireland. The movie was beautifully done. The costumes, the sets and props, choreography and the cinematography was fantastic. The cast was great. Sophia Myles was illuminating as Isolde with good performances also by James Franco and Rufus Sewell. There were slight changes to the legend, a bit of tweaking and some things were completely left out. Overall, a very enjoyable and engaging drama romance movie.

Brave Story (2006)
A below average anime much in the same vein as Spirited Away in which Wataru enters a fantasy world by the name of Vision in order to save his parents' marriage which is crumbling. Wataru has to face several challenges and grow as a person if he has any chance of getting his parents back together. The storyline is nothing special. It just didn't hook me in for some reason, the characters are bland and the pacing is off. The ending seemed to be rushed as well with a rather strange climax which gives the impression that a sequel is going to continue the story but I guess that never happened. This movie has it's fans especially those who like Dungeons & Dragons but the weak storyline and 'meh' characters makes this an anime I wouldn't really recommend.

This movie is based on a true story in which 13 Chinese sailors were murdered in Thailand and drugs were found on them. Who murdered them remains a mystery? The movie purports to tell the official version agreed upon by the Chinese and Thai governments. A group of Chinese special forces are sent into Thailand to flush out an evil drug organisation they think killed the sailors.

I usually like movies by Dante Lam but this one is rather dull. The action scenes I will agree are great but in between those scenes the story is boring and I inevitably switched off. It just goes on for long. A good 30 mins should have been cut to make the story flow better. If you've got the patience for it you might enjoy the movie but for those expecting non stop action I'm afraid you're gonna be disappointed. It's not a total bust this movie but there are better Dante Lam movies you should watch before seeing this one.

Creepy (2016)
Director Kiyoshi Kurosawa has really carved out a place for himself in the world of horror cinema. After some time exploring non-horror projects, he has returned with "Creepy", which blends American-style serial killer thrillers with horror themes unique to Japan. The movie is definitely a slow burner. At over two hours, very little happens in the first half. We come to understand why Takakura retired from the police force, and we meet his creepy neighbour Nishino, who has very poor social skills. But not one instance of horror can be pointed to – no jumps, no ghosts, nothing out of place. There is a death that occurs as part of a hostage situation, but it lies firmly in the category of a police / action scene, not horror. The slower pace and build-up might make the movie seem like a thriller or suspense rather than straight horror. But the horror aspects make themselves known in the second half and we are treated to some over-the-top imagery. Prolific actor Hidetoshi Nishijima makes a great leading man, exuding confidence and charm. Of course, the real star of the movie is Teruyuki Kagawa, who expertly displays an awkward way of speaking and moving as Nishino. Kurosawa has another winner on his hands with "Creepy" and it's well worth your time seeking it out.

Top Fighter 2 (1996)
This is a documentary highlighting the female action stars of Hong Kong cinema past. It seems like the producers made a list of all the women kung fu stars they could think of and then presented a series of mini-biographies on them, coupled with interviews of them giving their views on various subjects. Some of the stars that feature include: Moon Lee, Yukari Oshima, Elaine Lui, Michelle Yeoh, Cynthia Khan, Sophia Crawford, Michiko Nishikawa, Cynthia Rothrock, and Angela Mao. The main reason you'll want to watch this is for the plethora of fight scenes offered. Almost all of the performers are accompanied by one to three brawls from movies they've appeared in, and considering that these are stars from different eras of Hong Kong filmmaking, the result is a diverse and rich collage of kung fu. Most disappointingly, the documentary doesn't provide the titles to most of the movies it highlights, so good luck to you if you're interested in finding the ones that look interesting for yourself. Still, a good documentary, if like myself you love female action stars in HK action movies.

Wild Tales (2014)
Revenge is a dish best served cold indeed! Wild Tales has one of the most electrifying openings I've seen and is a very funny, clever, brutal and thrilling movie. Director/Writer Damián Szifrón puts together six different stories that all have revenge as their common theme. While some might be more engaging then others, they all have a lot of dark humour and take unpredictable turns. Wild Tales would certainly make Quentin Tarantino proud with its excellent blend of stylised violence and sharp comedy. This is undoubtedly the most fun I had watching a movie this year and I cannot recommend it highly enough! Don't miss it!

Love Witch is a homage to 70's sexploitation horror flicks. There's nothing even remotely pretentious about this movie. Its un-selfconscious in its camp, cheesy, 70's style, B grade, sexy horror schlockiness. There's a polished corniness that can been seen in this movie. Real care has been taken with the puerile voice overs, the colourfully crude visuals, the over stated, heavily scripted, almost monotone dialogue and cheesy 70's set pieces. Samantha Robinson is perfect as the Love Witch. She takes a role that's far from straight laced but plays it with such straight laced conviction, that it convincingly draws you in. The movie, although paced fairly well, goes on a tad too long. If you have a particular love of the early 70's strand of exploitation cinema then this one has a pretty good chance of rocking your boat.

Power Rangers (2017)
So this is the new reboot movie of the original Power Rangers and it's actually a lot better than what I expected. The story is how the gang get together and are tasked to become the Power Rangers who have to protect the Zeo Crystal from falling into the hands of the villainess Rita Repulsa and her sidekick Goldar. I'm not really sure how fans of the original series will take to the new counterparts. I wasn't a fan of the new Rita or Goldar at all but thankfully their involvement is kept to a minimum until the final 20 mins. I quite like the new Ranger team. Sure they're not as cool as the originals but you want to cheer them on just the same. The fight choreography is sorely lacking and rather dull and where the hell were the Putties so that the Rangers could kick some ass! The new Zords look amazing. It was nice to see cameos by Amy Jo Johnson and Jason David Franks. Overall it was a good attempt to revive the Ranger franchise which I'm sure will continue. Next time though get a better villain.

The Soviets invade a small island off the coast of Japan after the end of WWII. After being turfed out of their homes, a young boy Junpei befriends Tanya, the daughter of the Soviet Commander. But when Junpei's father is betrayed to the Soviets, Junpei blames Tanya, believing that she told her father a secret with which he had entrusted her.

This is a really beautiful animated movie, filled with both humour and loss, all told on a human scale where nobody is all-good and nobody is all-bad. The story is a seemingly simple story of a boy-meets-girl friendship crossing cultural and language barriers. It does go however dark in the second half with heartbreak and tragedy similar in vein to Grave Of The Fireflies. Thankfully though it ends on an upbeat note. The movie is visually striking being a very stylish hand-drawn anime even with hand drawn and painted backgrounds. The character designs are all unique and will bear a resemblance to those of Studio Ghibli's work. The imagination and fantasy sequences are beautiful and will capture your own imagination. Overall, a powerful post-war character drama that will tug at your heartstrings.

A decent enough effort by Disney but not one of their best. Emma Watson just wasn't able to pull off Belle, she did her best but I didn't buy it. Her smile never feels sincere or have much warmth in it, her default expression always seems angry, which is also out of her control but not the right fit for Belle. As others have stated she isn't at the peak of her craft yet. Some of the humour takes away from the mystique of the movie. The other actors did well and the special effects was incredible. There is tons of singing in the movie, which I felt was deceiving as I thought there would only be maybe 2 songs in it, it wasn't overdone but I just anticipated a big change. The last 15 minutes of the movie is very entertaining but as a whole the movie won't be among the top Disney movies ever made. Still a decent movie and easy on the eyes. The visuals are probably the biggest winner.

This is a great Japanese movie as it deals with the trials and tribulations of a father and perceived loser in the face of challenging life circumstances. Hiroshi Abe plays the role of Shinoda Ryota, a detective that is financially broke, divorced and living in the illusion of his past glory as an award winning author. He struggles to make ends meet and often resorts to gambling, stealing and backhand deals that involves extortion in order to support himself and to pay child support for his only son, Shingo.

The theme of this movie is dealing with the present circumstances in the face of unrealised dreams and broken hopes. What really catches the eye about this movie, is that even in a fully developed country like Japan, with is high standards of living and apparent high-culture, there exists people like Ryota; someone who is left behind by the fast-moving economy and rebels against the norm of participating in the corporate rat-race to succeed career-wise. Another excellent performance by Hiroshi Abe and Kirin Kiki who plays his ex-wife. You're guaranteed of a good movie in director Hirokazu Koreeda.

Fist Fight (2017)
From the first minute of the movie, I knew that Fist Fight was not going to be grounded to reality at all. Now, I don't mind suspending disbelief to enjoy a movie, but Fist Fight requires you to suspend your disbelief to such a low level that I had trouble bringing myself to. Most of the humour in the movie is rather juvenile and raunchy for no reason. Pretty much none of it is clever or slick and instead it applies to the lowest common denominator. The only funny thing in the movie was the lead character's daughter rapping at a concert to somebody that was bullying her. Ice Cube was basically just being himself. While it is watchable, Fist Fight is just a big mess without any class or enjoyment to be had, and you're probably best off passing on the movie.

The Meddler (2015)
Susan Sarandon plays a mother who is a constant pain in her daughter's life. She's a widow that desperately wants to be relevant in other people's lives as a way to avoid dealing with her own. This movie will appeal to women more than men as it deals with a mother daughter relationship. The movie has an OK script - nothing special but unfortunately it's full of clichéd melodrama, tired gags, and feigned sentimentality. I usually like movies with Sarandon but her character is really irritating here. I wonder if Apple gave some money for the movie's production as there seems to be a number of product placements for the company as well. I tried to like this movie but it just didn't do anything for me.

Demolition (2015)
Jake Gyllenhaal is probably one of the most underrated actors of this generation and in every movie I've seen him in over the past 10 years he's given an extraordinary performance and this movie is no different. It's about the story of a man who loses his wife in a car accident. His way of grieving is what the movie narrates. He realises that he's not able feel a thing when everyone around does, so he decides to search for the answers and so his bizarre journey begins. The casting was good, but it was all about the Gyllenhaal's role but Naomi Watts is also amazing. You might wonder why the title was named 'Demolition', well you'll find out around 3/4 of the way through. Overall - a really good dark comedy with a fantastic performance by Jake Gyllenhaal.

I Am a Hero (2015)
A down on his luck manga artist Hideo Suzuki finds himself battling the undead when a virus unleashes a zombie outbreak. Along with a young schoolgirl, he has to try and reach Mount Fuji as the virus doesn't work at high altitude.

I've seen many Japanese zombie movies over the years and this is one of the better ones. There's nothing new or original in the story at all although Hiromi, the schoolgirl has been infected but has not turned yet but for some reason the movie kinda forgets about this for the remainder of the running time. Fans of splatter gore will really love this movie as blood sprays like there's no tomorrow with plenty of heads exploding, zombies chomping on human flesh etc etc. The gore content is extremely high. Yo Oizumi plays the nerdy lead character who doesn't do anything heroic until the last 30 mins when he cuts loose with his rifle. Kasumi Arimura is cute as Hiromi the schoolgirl and then there's Masami Nagasawa who is always watchable in her work. This is a solid horror movie not to be missed by zombie fans.

This is the new movie starring Indonesian action star Iko Uwais who plays a man Ishmael found on a beach with no memory of who he is after he is shot in the head. Patched up by a kindly female doctor, they both find themselves in danger by Ishmael's former comrades who are desperate to finish him off for good.

Fans of both Raid movies will love this action movie. The gory violence comes thick and fast with a high body count. The fight choreography is superb. In addition to the cool fighting scenes, the movie is also filled with good sound effects and the music is surprisingly good. Iko Uwais is on top form here playing a different kind of action hero from that of The Raid. He's slightly more vulnerable due to the shards of bullet that's stuck in his head but still tough as nails. I loved that his co-star from The Raid 2 in Julie Estelle is also in this movie. You might not get a great story line or logic here but what you get instead is pure entertainment and this has tons of it. Enjoy it for what it is - an adrenaline rush actioner.

Pluto (2012)
A dark tale about the Korean school system where competition to be the best is fierce. This story follows a teenage boy who comes from a humble background and enters into an elite school. He discovers a secret society which has members of the top 10 students in the school which he wants to join. This has the advantage of getting special priviliges.

This movie highlights the pressures that young people have in Korea and Japan in having to achieve well in order to secure a place at a good university. It's no wonder suicide rates in both countries amongst young people are very high. The stress and expectation can push some kids to do evil things like the lead character in this movie. The plot is complex and requires the viewer's complete attention to make sense of what's going on. It plumbs the depths of human life and explores topics including bullying, stress, suicide, peer group pressure, and plenty more besides. The performances from Da-wit Lee and in particular Sung-Jun are really impressive.

An interesting movie about the Japanese calendar that was reformed during the 17th century because it was inaccurate. It was only due to the belief of one man Yasui Santetsu who realised that the calendar was wrong because Japan adopted the Chinese model without taking into account of the difference in longitude between Peking and Tokyo. You might think that a movie with an obscure subject as this might not make worthwhile viewing but I found it fascinating. Don't make the mistake of thinking that as the title character is a samurai that there's lot of swordsplay because there isn't so if you're after an action movie go elsewhere. Jun'ichi Okada is great as the mathematician / astrologer Sentetsu ably assisted by the gorgeous Aoi Miyazaki as his wife En. This movie will not appeal to everybody but for those with an interest in Japan's history it's well worth taking a look.

With a new Power Rangers movie coming out soon, I decided to check out the 2nd Rangers movie that came out during the 90's but quickly realised I wish I hadn't! This movie was to introduce fans to the new Power Rangers Turbo series. It's a right stinker of a movie and no wonder Rangers fans want to forget about it. The plot is terrible and the only good thing about the female villain Divatox is she looks hot. As the Rangers antagonist though she's pathetic. None of the cast come out glowing in the acting stakes. There is nothing worth making this movie watchable unless you want to see the return of the original Pink Ranger Kimberly.

My Old Lady (2014)
I thought this was going to be an out and out comedy but I would say it more of a dramedy. Having said that, this was a touching movie about relationships and dysfunctional families and a very strange set of French Laws. In a nutshell, Mathias Gold, played by Kevin Kline, inherits an apartment in France from his late father. Spending his last dime to travel to Paris he discovers to his dismay that the apartment comes with a tenant Mathilde Girard (Maggie Smith) who is allowed to stay there until her death, and to compound things he has to pay rent to her. Determined to find a way to sell the apartment and make some money Mathias tries everything he can to achieve his goal. As the story progresses we meet Chloe who is Mathilde's daughter and has issues of her own. Although slow in places this charming movie winds it's way through the streets of Paris much as the Seine flows past Notre Dame and it does make you want to visit the city.

A physically challenged man overcomes his uneven legs to become a super strong Kung fu master with the goal of killing seven of the greatest masters of their styles. Donnie Yen plays a prisoner released from jail to find him and stop his killing spree.

This is a tribute to those old school HK martial arts movies with cameos from various stars of the past. The plot develops like something you'd expect from a kung-fu movie taking place centuries ago. The villain chooses his victims based on their mastery of the arts. He wants to defeat the best kicker, the best grappler, the best weapon user, etc. in order to prove he is the greatest fighter in the land. The action scenes are pretty good - fast and frenetic, minimal apparent CGI/wirework, and well choreographed. I should also note the producers do a nice job finding and designing creative set pieces for the action, with various scenes taking place on a busy freeway, inside a dinosaur museum, etc. Donnie Yen delivers his usual perfect set of fighting and action skills in this movie and fans of his work will not be disappointed.

A thoroughly enjoyable Thai teen comedy. Teenage boys and best friends Ped and Koong decide to form a band. The problem is they suck. So they decide to recruit Ex - a drummer and Ern a female guitarist. Things go haywire when Koong starts to fall for Ern who is Ped's secret childhood crush. This movie was simply amazing. Everything about it is great and it really made me laugh out loud literally nearly every five minutes and the rest of the time, with a broad smile. Not only is it funny, but the story and acting are also executed perfectly. As the story gets more emotional near the end, it really shows us another side of the movie that really makes it great: the value of true friendship and love. Add to that some infectious rock tunes, and this is one high-spirited celebration of being the best you can be - even if you may suck! One of the best Thai movies I've seen.

A wonderful anime tale investigating a so-called murder of a school classmate who disappeared suddenly. It's different from the live-action 2004 movie but the 2 actresses (Yui Aoi and Anne Suzuki) who played the characters reprise their roles once more. The whimsical story follows Hana and Alice's friendship and actually develops their characters a bit better than before. There's plenty of humour to be had from Alice's interactions with various people but of course it's what takes place between the two girls that shines through. The animation is beautiful to look at with the detailed background of the sky a joy to see. Director Iwai Shunji has created a great story here and I loved how everything was wrapped up nicely in the end. If you loved the live-action movie you need to check this out.

Logan (2017)
Hugh Jackman's final performance allegedly as Wolverine and what a way to go out...in a blaze of glory! This movie exceeded all expectations especially when compared to the previous Wolverine movies which were fine but not brilliant. This movie ends the franchise on a high, with an emotional, and satisfying ending. Hugh Jackman's performance is the best of his career. This movie is jam packed with amazing action sequences which don't hold back one bit on the violence. The introduction of X-23 is a big win as well. She is played by Dafne Keen, and though doesn't say much, plays her role very well. Her connection with both Wolverine and Charles Xavier creates a family-orientated environment that makes the movie a whole lot better, especially seen in certain scenes. Overall, Logan is a fantastic movie that is as heartbreaking as it is visually stunning. It's a special movie with this that should be talked about for years to come.

The legendary King Kong returns in an all new adventure that gives the classic tale an update and new setting. The movie is set in 1973 when a man informs the government that they have detected a previously unknown island and need to investigate it before the Soviets learn of it and beat them to whatever the island my hold. A team is recruited to map the island.

The movie combines a solid cast with state of the art special effects to take a new twist on the standard adventure fare. While many parts of the movie remain silly popcorn entertainment, the quality of the assembled cast allows the movie to move beyond being just an assembly of potential victims for a menagerie of CGI creatures to dispatch. While the story is more in line with the linear and thin plots of adventure movies of old, the sum of the parts does add up to an enjoyable experience for those who like the giant creature movies. It was certainly better than what I expected.

Goat (2016)
This movie tells the story of a young man who gets brutally attacked by two strangers. He then goes to college, joins a fraternity house, and gets transformed into a different person.

There has been a lot of movies that portrays fraternity houses to be a lot of fun, but finally there is a movie that shows that fraternity houses may not be as rosy as it appear. The story focuses on the initiation week, where new recruits are humiliated and even tortured. It is uncomfortable to see what happens in the movie, even though the tone of the movie is not too dark. The level of subhuman behaviour is terrifying, because the abuse is legitimised by "tradition". This movie tells a compelling story of abuse, abused and abuser. It lets people reflect on what is right and what is wrong.

One of the most awful movies I've ever had the misfortune of watching! I can't even begin to describe how very weird it is. The acting is simply terrible. The choices made by the actors are conflicting and confusing. The story line is confusing and hastily thrown together with some stupid idiotic dialogue by the characters. What you do see a lot is an old man wandering around naked all greased up with his large penis (I believe it was prosthetic) being displayed many times. I've no idea what the point of all that was? This is a sorry excuse for a movie and no person should torture themselves by watching it.
