Yuri is a young prostitute who is made aware of a mobile phone app which lets you communicate with the dead. She is desperate to talk to her younger brother Satoshi who tragically died whilst in her care years ago.

I thought that this might be an interesting Japanese movie but unfortunately it fails. The director is unsure whether to lump this as a horror or a drama movie. There is only a slight horror element to the story and it is devoid of any real scares. The lame drama and a thread about a reporter trying to find out about the mobile app which goes nowhere add to the mixed bag this movie is. Whatever interest you might have had in the first half of the movie quickly disappears in the last 30 mins. The ending is particularly bad which sums up this movie to a tee. All in all, a very disappointing movie which given it's premise should have been good.

IT (2017)
For once, Hollywood delivers a remake with heart and inspiration - and good screen writing. Bill Skarsgård is truly frightening as Pennywise. Director Andy Muschietti and his team have created that magical Spielberg-Zemeckis adventurous 80's feeling, also reminding of the classic "Stand by Me". The fine performances by the young cast, the quick, funny and good writing, the nice score by rising Benjamin Wallfisch and the cinematography by skilled South Korean Chung Chung-hoon all help in making "It" a well-working and enjoyable movie.

Carnosaur 2 (1995)
Roger Corman does a cheap Aliens rip-off in this movie! A bunch of male and female mercenaries, are hired to investigate what has happened in a government facility where they were experimenting with dinosaur DNA. There they meet a teenager, who happens to be the only survivor. The story is almost exactly like Aliens and it's ridiculous how much has been copied. The dinosaurs look just as plastic and fake as before. The acting, atmosphere, script, special effects (especially gore and dinosaur effects), are just plain funny. Overall it's a rather lame monster horror movie.

The movie undoubtedly had great visuals with an amazing universe to get into, but the promising characters and plot turned out to be a major disappointment. The plot itself could have been amazing and very thrilling, but instead it felt rushed and underdeveloped with many plot-holes and unanswered questions. There were countless scenes that felt unnecessary and over-dramatic as well. The characters weren't much better. The two main characters could have also been interesting and engaging, but turned out to be hypocritical and awkward. Their relationship and dialogue was very forced, cheesy, and predictable. Even most of the background characters turned out to be wasted or unnecessary. The movie left me feeling irritated and confused, but the world-building, action, and visuals are the only saving graces.

R.O.T.O.R. (1987)
This has been called one of the worst movies ever made and I can see why as well. It is total garbage and zilch to recommend about it. It's a cheap ripoff of Robocop. I could spend hours detailing all the problems I have with this movie, but I'll just list them. The special effects are dreadful, the dialogue is silly and nonsensical, the music is beyond annoying, the actors have zero charisma, the acting is painful to watch, the few attempts at comedy are cringeworthy, the ending is totally ridiculous, and the whole thing is a boring mess. The list is endless. Don't waste 90 mins of your life watching this crap, find another better movie instead!

What an absolutely stunning anime movie this is and yet another fine example of Japanese creativity and talent to make a heart warming story. A young girl named Hotaru gets lost in the woods during a summer vacation in her uncle's mountain lodge. Just when she starts to fear no one would find her, a young man with a mask covering his face appears and shows the way home. But there's something mysterious about Gin, and as it seems, he may even be a forest god in a human form. This movie draws heavily on Japanese tradition and mythology about the yokai - mysterious and playful spirits that inhabit the forests of Japan. All in all, this is a superb anime tale that will tug at the heartstrings.

I don't think anyone expected the original 'Kingsman' to be as big and enjoyable as it was and now the sequel has come along for a fun if familiar journey. New plot theme, cool humour, and some crazy fast paced loud action. It may not be as fun as the first movie but it is entertaining. This movie offers some crazy insane action sequences from the opening car chase to the snowy mountain fight. The fight scenes are fast and can be brutal. Julianne Moore was a great addition as the villain. Having her own fortress in the middle of the forest named Poppy Land which has a look of the 1950s town with robotic dogs and guards. The 3 main leads in Taron Egerton, Mark Strong and Colin Firth are fantastic and bounce off each other brilliantly. I was surprised how funny Elton John was as Poppy's hostage. Overall, Kingsman: The Golden Circle is a very entertaining action spy movie. It has some creative loud action but it can be overbearing with the cheesy CGI. Definitely well worth watching if you loved the first one.

Following on from the original was always going to be difficult, but I think 2049 pulls it off in a way that is satisfying to old-time fans, and people watching without having seen the original. The movie retains the atmosphere of its predecessor, partly due to the magnificent score of Hans Zimmer, partly due to the excellent visuals and overall theme of hope. Jared Leto was good as Niander Wallace, who is trying to create replicants who are happily subservient and it's a shame he didn't get more screen time. Ryan Gosling proves he is a capable actor by carrying the movie as K, and Harrison Ford, while old, still retains his old acting charm. It did go on for far too long and should have been 30 mins shorter but apart from that this was a very good sci-fi movie.

mother! (2017)
This movie is unexpected and an experience like you've never had in your life. This is exactly why I enjoy Darren Aronofsky's work, you get to see stuff you've never seen before. It's a difficult watch in parts I won't lie about that. It's suspenseful, shocking, some will absolutely love it and others will despise it. I enjoyed it because it comes at you like a ton of bricks - it grabs you and doesn't let go. Its a cerebral thrill ride, a mystery of epic proportions until the end, at which point your brain is scrambled eggs. Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem were incredibly good together. I'd be lying if I said the movie didn't have its issues because it does, but I still really enjoyed it. Go and watch this with an open mind.

This is a horror-comedy that very knowingly takes the core conceit of Bill Murray's Groundhog Day and smashes it together with the slasher genre as one girl desperately tries to find out how to stop herself being murdered or she is doomed to replay the same day forever. It's surprisingly fun and effective, with the right balance of humour, scares and character development. The mystery of the killer's identity is another part of the fun. The movie introduces a bunch of characters in the first loop, many whom are red herrings for the audience to suspect. In the end I failed to guess the killer since the movie deployed multiple misdirection to make sure the secret is preserved. Overall, Happy Death Day is a pretty enjoyable horror flick with an interesting concept and a very good performance from the lead actress. I was not bored for even a second because of how fun it was. Yes it is absolutely implausible, bonkers and silly, but if you are looking some cheap thrills and a reason to crack a smile, this movie does its job pretty damn well.

A British sex comedy so bad that even one of it's stars in Joanna Lumley is embarrassed about it! Two brothel Madams place a bet against each other that their top girl is better than the other in a series of challenges in which they have to try and seduce the unseducables. For a sex comedy it really is tame stuff. Only right at the beginning do you see any nudity. The comedy (if that's what you can call it) is piss poor and the less said about the acting the better. Penny Brahms is beautiful to look at but her acting skills is terrible. This movie is definitely bottom of the barrel stuff and as such should be avoided.

C.H.O.M.P.S. (1979)
A fun family movie about a young inventor that creates the ultimate security system - a robot dog based on his own canine pet named C.H.O.M.P.S (Canine Home Protection System). Incredibly fast with x-ray eyes and super strength, the robot dog can do just about anything. However, rival security companies try their best to steal technical plans for the robotic dog so that they can build and sell their very own for large profits. This isn't the greatest kid-geared movie made, but it is a lot of fun to watch and certain to bring a smile on your face. It's especially fun if you're a dog lover. Sure, some of what is going on is dopey but this is simple innocent entertainment after all. Just watching the little dog in action is pure joy, as he is able to scale walls, "pull" trucks, and operate machine buttons to capture the bad guys. Kids are sure to enjoy this movie.

This is the Italian swords and sands version of The Magnificent Seven in which 7 brave warriors defend a small village against an evil man and his troops. Han, the leader of the brave warriors has a secret weapon - a magic sword that only he can hold.

It's not a good telling of The Magnificent Seven story truth be told. The acting isn't great and the battles between the two factions aren't very exciting. Lou Ferrigno is OK as Han though his voice is clearly dubbed but there's always the busty Sybil Danning to take your mind off the cack handed plot. Only watch this is you really haven't got anything better to do.

The first in a series of German imitation-Bond movies made in the mid-60's and a rather good one too. This one's got it all – a likable lead in Tony Kendall, a put-upon sidekick in Brad Harris, over-the-top gadgets, lots of beautiful women (Maria Perschy, Christa Linder etc), a wonderfully entertaining villain, a cool underground lair, fight scenes galore, terrific European locations, a catchy title song, and a great explosive finale. What more could you ask for? Throw in a brainwashed army of women with matching blond hair, groovy black outfits, and machine guns (Fembots?), and you've got one heck of a cool movie. It may have stolen some ideas from the 007 movies but it's still got some charm and originality on it's own. The movie may start a bit slow, but once it gets going, it's just a ton of fun.

This movie was a milestone in British cinema, and also introduced the magical young Rita Tushingham to the screen for the first time. It revolves around a 16 year old girl Jo who gets pregnant by a black sailor who abandons her soon after and also her despicable mother who is more interested in having a good time with men than looking after her daughter. She also abandons her daughter after getting married. Jo meets Geoffrey, a homosexual man who moves in with her and promises to look after her.

This is a classic movie of a now vanished world. It really is a true picture of what life was like in the working class communities of Britain's northern industrial cities. There is extensive location filming in Manchester and the surrounding area. Barton Swing Bridge and the Manchester Liners Shipping Company, Old Trafford Football Ground complete with floodlight pylons, the atmosphere of a back street boozer and Blackpool's brightly lit amusements are seen. The acting is tremendous with Dora Bryan superbly cast as the selfish mother, Rita Tushingham the gawky teenager full of youthful wonder of her harsh world and Murray Melvin as the young adolescent battling with his sexuality and feelings for the enchanting Tushingham. It's a must see for anyone interested in what is known as a kitchen sink drama or who lives or has worked around Manchester.

Boy (2010)
This movie which takes a look at native life in rural New Zealand during the mid 80's captures the fleeting innocence of childhood. Boy, a scrawny twelve-year-old with an affinity for Michael Jackson, is tasked with watching his younger brother Rocky and a slew of cousins while his grandmother is away, but things get wild when Boy's estranged, criminal father reappears.

Director Taika Waititi shows the lives of average Maoris in New Zealand. The comedy that's on show is fantastic. It's very interesting to see Boy and his family and friends interact on a daily basis. They run free across the town, where everybody know everybody, without a care. Boy manages to remain an upbeat and energetic movie, even while dealing with tough issues like broken families, drug use and death. Waititi's creative take on Boy and his father's rough relationship is both light and poignant, making the movie an entertaining watch for anyone who is a fan of Waititi or Michael Jackson.

Virgin Witch (1972)
Disowned by the sisters taking the lead roles, this is a poor sleazy British movie about witchcraft. A girl gets a job for a modeling agency, only to later discover that it's all a cover to recruit young girls for a coven of witches. She's got her eyes on taking over the head priestess role in the coven. This movie is just an excuse for Ann and Vicki Michelle (of Allo Allo fame) to get their clothes off and parade naked or wear scantily dressed clothes. The supernatural aspect of the story is barely mentioned. The movie gets boring very quickly. The acting and production values are awful and some of the dialogue laughable. Don't waste your time watching this crap.

This anime movie is not a condensed 2 hour version of the TV series but rather an alternative retelling of the Macross Frontier story Do You Remember Love. In AD 2059, the Galactic Fairy Sheryl Nome, the latest in a long line of famous songstresses to grace the galaxy, descends upon Frontier to kick off her upcoming concert. At the same time the alien bugs Vajra decides to attack Frontier and suspicions begin to start that Sheryl is a spy for the Vajrans. Is Sheryl in league with the aliens or is there another force at work?

This is the first of a 2 part movie series which concludes with The Wings Of Goodbye. It's a great movie but those that want to see numerous battle scenes will be disappointed. They are few and far between. This is more like a concert movie for Sheryl Nome and her songs are sung by the wonderful Japanese singer May'n. The characters are all likeable and are mostly the same as the TV series. The plot is not really the important part here - it's just set up for the 2nd part. The animation is really good. It's not the best Macross movie I've seen but still entertaining though.

A ridiculous and fairly disturbing story revolving around a 26 year old policeman who gets married to a 16 year old schoolgirl without even dating after a chance encounter at a party. How the parents of the girl agree to this I have no idea! Only in Japan would this kind of thing be acceptable. It's a pleasant enough movie targeted to teen girls around the same age as the heroine about the highs and lows of the couple's relationship. There's the added charm of Japanese heart throb Kazuya Kamenashi to make the girls swoon at him in a policeman's outfit. Tao Tsuchiya is good as the 16 year old schoolgirl Kako though why she feels the need to settle down so early in life with an older man instead of enjoying her youth is beyond my comprehension. The scenery showing the city of Hakodate in Hokkaido is beautiful. Despite the dubious nature of the story, it's definitely watchable and those that like light romance movies will enjoy it.

The evil Jared-Syn terrorises the small desert planet of Lemuria by sucking the lifeforce out of folks with his storage crystals. It's up to heroic ranger Dogan to stop the foul villain. While the basic premise offers a pretty cool blend of Western and science fiction elements complete with the inevitable gunslinger showdown in the middle of a tiny mining town and a fierce tribe of Cyclopean beings standing in for your usual savage Indians, the movie is undermined by Charles Band's leaden direction, a plodding pace and crappy special effects. The ending to this is quite anticlimactic and disappointing but getting there provides some degree of fun. If you can turn off your brain for 83 minutes, you might like it

The Ghoul (2016)
A homicide detective goes undercover as a patient to investigate a psychotherapist he believes is linked to a strange double murder. As his therapy sessions continue the line between fantasy and reality begins to blur. Don't go into this thinking it's a horror movie because it isn't. What starts out as a standard police drama slowly melts into an endless, dark, psychological journey, where everything is gradually turned upside down. The ending will disorient viewers and it's quite good. Unfortunately for the ending, the bulk of the rest of the story leading up to it borders on slow torture. This is the kind of movie that will split viewers - those that love mind benders will no doubt enjoy it but as for the rest I don't know. As it's not an easy movie to watch, it won't be for everyone.

Interesting re-enactment of the desert campaign during WWII as seen through the experiences of one small company in the British army. A motley band of Commonwealth troops of mixed personalities led by Captain MacRoberts played by Richard Burton. Through the fire and hell of battling the Desert Fox and his war-hardened troops, MacRoberts by lifting their spirits and their morale eventually melds his men into a fighting fit group of warriors.

The Desert Rats is a very realistic war movie, presenting strategies, battles, action scenes and a great duel between James Mason (as Rommel) and Richard Burton. Actual genuine footage from the war looks to have been inserted into the movie as well. The battle scene between the dug-in Aussies and Rommel's tanks is well filmed and exciting. Well worth a look.

A Place to Go (1963)
This is a great social drama centering around the Flint family who are living in a poor area of Bethnal Green, London. 60's pop star Michael Sarne is the idealistic hero seeking to escape from his drab existence by agreeing to take part in a robbery at a local factory. He hooks up with the inimitable Rita Tushingham, who proves to be more than a match for his wiles as her character is full of life and rather independent. She's the best actor in the whole thing, certainly showing up Sarne as a rather bland leading man. James Bond's Bernard Lee plays the mouthy head of the Flint family alongside On The Buses' Doris Hare as his wife. It's interesting to note that times are changing near the end as the Flints buy a new high rise flat and their old street is destined to be torn down. If your expectations are not too high, you'll find some entertainment here.

A coming of age tale as 17 year old disturbed teenager Brydie White played by Hayley Mills falls for a travelling gypsy boy who gives her the love she doesn't get at home. It's sad to say that this movie is a forgotten classic. I'm not sure if the characters in the movie are supposed to be Welsh or English but judging by the accents and some of the actors in the production I'm guessing it's Welsh. The cinematography showing the beautiful Gloucestershire countryside is fantastic and harks back to how the Summer months used to be in the UK. A young Ian McShane plays Mills' gypsy lover Roibin and there are appearances by Geoffrey Bayldon, Annette Crosbie, Jacqueline Pearce (of Blake's 7 fame) and noted Welsh actress Rachel Thomas. For those wondering about the title it refers to Brydie's mental state. It's a good movie for fans of Hayley Mills with an interesting story to boot.

Aaaaaaaah! (2015)
A good idea for a plot but badly executed. How would society look today if humans reverted back to being neanderthals/apes that communicate through grunting. The story is set in modern times with modern houses, technology etc but yet the people eat with their hands and don't appear to have any degree of intelligence. I think that's one thing that doesn't make any sense. There is no overall storyline, it's pretty random and pointless and seems set up mostly to shock the audience such as one man masturbating with a mouse! I quickly became bored with the whole thing. It really is a big mess this movie. I'm sure it's destined to become a cult movie of some sort but I couldn't wait for it to finish. Didn't like it one bit. Terrible.

A particularly impressive and downright British screwball farce. A scandal sheet publisher is blackmailing various people with the following threat, pay up or your dirty secrets will become public knowledge. Four of his victims decide to kill him instead. The comedy comes from their failed attempts. The characters are so well defined, with master character actor Peter Sellers again showing his virtuoso talents for adopting various disguises. Terry Thomas and the smooth Dennis Price are brilliantly assured with the material, but Sellers does steal the show. Peggy Mount and a young Joan Sims also appear. The whole film is rather silly, no part more so than the ending, but is very entertaining and very funny as the bungling victims try to kill either themselves or their tormentor, each with an equal lack of success. Well worth watching.

A Gothic horror tale based on an Edgar Allen Poe tale, filled with the grotesque excesses of Victorian medicine and mental health treatments. Throw in two big stars as two opposing forces in this literal madhouse, and you might think you have a humdinger here. But no - the first hour drags a bit but thankfully things pick up afterwards and it becomes fairly interesting. The cast has some heavyweights which includes Kate Beckinsale, Jim Sturgess, David Thewlis, Brendan Gleeson, Ben Kingsly and Michael Caine. With a cast like this however I was expecting something a little bit better. Overall, the movie is good but it's not something that you're likely to remember for anything special.

Sightseers (2012)
This is very much a team effort: the two stars (Alice Lowe and Steve Oram) also co-wrote the script. With a distinct nod to earlier movies such as Badlands, it focuses on two lovers, Tina and Chris, who embark on a caravanning holiday that takes a decidedly bloody turn, as they dispose of several innocent victims. The script is deadpan yet extremely funny: both protagonists get some valuable one-liners. Director Ben Wheatley's cinematic style is certainly startling, with its deliberate use of out-of-sync sound, fantasy sequences, a little bit of gore and a soundtrack that includes work by Soft Cell and Frankie Goes to Hollywood. Alice Lowe and Steve Oram are brilliant in their roles. If you enjoy dark and mysterious movies with a complex story line, then I would recommend you watch this.

PSI Factor (1980)
An obscure and rarely seen low budget movie about a scientist who is a part of a top secret Air Force project that is sending messages into space and who gets a reply back from aliens. Nobody seems to believe him and after getting his girlfriend to steal a classified file about him, the scientist goes on the run with the Air Force in hot pursuit. The aliens appear as a glowing red ball of light that help and hinder the scientist at times. Scenes of young children playing with insects are seen at various intervals and this is never explained until the climax when the scientist finally gets to understand what the aliens are all about. Peter Mark Richman is good in the leading role of the scientist. What lets this movie down however is the cheap special effects and there isn't that much of excitement to be had. If you're the type that likes The X-Files or the 60's series The Invaders then this movie might be up your street.

Southern Captain Wishbone Cutter, Indian/Irish companion Half-Moon O'Brian and geologist Amos Richmond head out on a journey to a cave which supposedly holds some valuable stones. Along the way they come across a young lady, Drusilla Wilcox, who was the last survivor of an Indian ambush and decide she'll come too. But it doesn't seem quite right, as they are being followed by some unseen force who doesn't want them to reach their destination.

A fairly offbeat but murky western / horror variation set during the end of the American Civil War which hints that a demon force known as Chikara is stalking the group for trespassing on it's terrain. It's a low-cost looking production but it is eerie at times and atmospheric. The acting by the cast is better than the story itself led by Joe Don Baker as Wishbone Cutter and Sondra Locke as the mysterious Drusilla. There's a bit of a twist right near the climax which caught me offguard and gave the movie a satisfying conclusion. Also a disturbing scene featuring a couple of horses falling down a side of a mountain is unsettling and looks real enough. It's not too bad of a movie.

A young woman is raised and trained to destroy a gang of murderers who hunt and kill blonde women for fun. It is essentially all she knows and she wants to please her master who has put in all the years to make her the killing machine that she is. However the movie fails to build up any tension and you fail to really care about any of the characters. The script is too evasive and you find that you cannot follow just how any of the characters think. You don't understand their motivation to do anything and so you are unsure as to why they do anything. This movie leaves a lot of questions unanswered and has much to be desired. Although Abigail Breslin looks stunning in the leading role she gives a hollow and uninteresting turn. Alexander Ludwig (Bjorn in Vikings) also doesn't impress at all. Give it a miss.

A young teenage girl who is babysitting a single father's young son whilst he is out poaching rabbits finds him dead in the morning. She becomes convinced that she is being haunted by the boy.

A wasteful low budget British horror movie which is all about mood and atmosphere as the story itself is not that good. It hints that something otherworldy/supernatural is happening to the teenage girl but you don't see anything taking place in the end. I found the main actress, Jessica Barden, a bit disappointing as the lead character; she's limited to one expression throughout and that soon gets wearying. There's nothing to really recommend about this movie so if you skip it you're not missing out on anything.

Husband-and-wife team Bill Travers and Virginia McKenna play a newly married couple who inherit a dilapidated cinema (and its elderly, incompetent and equally dilapidated staff), and try to restore it to something like it's original glory. However they soon discover that it's not going to be as easy as perhaps they first thought. There is competition from a huge modern cinema just across the street, which is in need of a car-park and the site of the old "Bijou" would be just the thing.

This is a terrific comedy and features Peter Sellers, Margaret Rutherford, Bernard Miles as the cinema staff, and Leslie Phillips as the Bijou owner's solicitor. The movie is in the grand tradition of those lovely old British comedies in which people set about renovating something old and long forgotten and against all the odds succeed. Where the movie also works is as a tribute to the golden age of cinema, in particular the Bijou's staff tearfully watching an old silent movie. It's an endearing tale of how it used to be in the movie business in the old days. Well worth seeing.

Downton Abbey's Joanne Froggatt plays a British soldier who is struggling to adapt back to civilian life after a tour of duty in Iraq and the atrocities she witnessed there. The subject of the Iraq war and how those who served in it are returning home with mental health disorders triggered by their experiences there is something that's had some attention in the press and various other outlets, and this movie attempts to make a drama out of it, highlighting with subtlety and sensitivity the delicate mindset of a soldier coming home. The use of run down, graffiti/vandalism laden housing estates in the North East makes for a fitting atmosphere. Joanne Froggatt gives an incredible performance as Suzy, a person suffering from PTSD. Suzy thinks she can handle everything but the cracks soon start to show through as the viewer sees her inner struggles. Overall, it's a well made and crafted movie which shines a light on a relevant matter.

In rural Lancashire, soldiers are being killed by a mysterious creature. Two elderly sisters live in a country house and seem to have an idea who could have killed the soldiers. It seems that someone who has been bricked up in their underground cellar has escaped and is committing the murders.

A fairly average British horror with the only good thing about it is the acting of the two sisters played by Beryl Reid and Flora Robson. There is hardly any gore when it shows the murders taking place - a small splatter of blood here and there. The creature is kept off-screen for the majority of the movie until the identity is revealed in a story by one of the sisters near the climax. The ending is a bit predictable and the editing is rather bad in places. This movie could have been so much better.

Dementia 13 (1963)
One of Francis Ford Coppola's movies he directed early in his career under the tutelage of Roger Corman. The plot is about a woman who watches her husband's fatal heart attack on a rowing boat on a lake and begins to cover up his death in hopes of getting his share of an inheritance. This leads to a gathering of a very strange family in an Irish castle where an axe murderer runs amok!

While the movie starts out in an interesting manner, it quickly becomes a rather simplistic horror that is straight forward and somewhat predictable. The acting in the movie is a bit stiff and wooden and the dialog / screen writing is not really up to par. The two best performances in the movie are turned in by the wife that drowns her husband in the opening scene and the family doctor that has a rather creepy edge to him. The rest of the cast is just going through the motions. This movie is a bit overrated if I'm being honest. It's good to know that Coppola went on to bigger and better things in his career after this production.

Night Fare (2015)
A pretty good horror/action French movie about 2 young men on a night out in Paris who take a taxi somewhere but decide not to pay the driver after arriving at their destination by running off. They find the driver pursuing them over Paris as he wants his fee with the taxi meter going up all the time.

I really enjoyed the first half of this movie as the two men are chased here, there and everywhere with the mysterious taxi driver coming across as an unstoppable force of nature. As the night goes on and every safe haven the men turn to is eliminated, they're forced to face a moment they thought they had left behind for ever. The driver is a great villain (if you can call him a villain that is?). He's nearly always shrouded in shadow and is a big brute of a man. And then the plot sharply turns 180 degrees in the second half as the viewer finally discovers who the driver is. The movie starts out like a slasher flick but it slowly turns into a tale of redemption. I wasn't too keen on this swerve to be honest but it made for an interesting ending. Overall, Night Fare is a tense and, at times, brutal chase movie that keeps the adrenaline pumping throughout.

White Cargo (1973)
Before he became famous in Britain as one of it's favourite TV sitcom stars, David Jason took part in this silly slapstick comedy movie in which he plays a bumbling idiot that gets involved in a plot with some Arabs smuggling English girls out of the country into slavery in the Middle East.

This isn't as bad as a lot of people have said but it's still typical of the type of poor comedy movies that Britain was producing during the 70's. Thankfully David Jason's likable character lifts it from being the disaster it could have been. He gives a good performance as the daydreaming hero who thinks he could be James Bond but more or less bungles everything he tries. I wouldn't say this movie is very funny but it does produce a couple of laughs.

A drug-induced slice of sci-fi craziness, based on a novel by popular fantasy writer Michael Moorcock. I was hoping to like this, but the sad truth is that it turns out to be a completely unconvincing dud of a movie, far too light-hearted and campy to succeed. Jon Finch is Jerry Cornelius tasked with hunting down a secret microfilm in a world on the edge of the apocalypse. Various oddball supporting characters turn up to either help or hinder him. I don't mind a bit of camp but this movie goes way over the top and as a result is simply stupid.

This is a b-movie British spy drama filmed in Malta to give it an exotic Mediterranean flavour. The story sees espionage taking place when an agent is shipped in to uncover a drug smuggling ring involving the transport of heroin shipments, and our man's job is to find out who's doing it and stop them in their tracks.

What sounds like it should be a light and breezy affair is in fact plodding and unworkable, suffering from wooden male leads and such a slow pace. There is some action at times to keep you from falling asleep but the best thing about the movie is the beautiful women such as the sexy Patsy Anne Noble and Carron Gardner. A shame it didn't turn out as good as I would have hoped.

The Beguiled (1971)
Clever psycho-sexual drama about a wounded Union soldier who seeks refuge in an isolated Confederate school for young women during the Civil War. Slowly, Eastwood begins to seduce some of the girls, until the tables are turned and he becomes the pursued in an unsettling, gothic-toned finale. Never has a movie been so deliciously erotic yet disturbingly macabre at the same time. It's another example of Eastwood's willingness at that time to break new ground and tackle new genres. He plays a thoroughly unpleasant character here. A very intelligent, groundbreaking inventive movie.

Blue Ruin (2013)
This is a brilliant revenge story about Dwight, an apparent homeless drifter housing a grudge against a convict about to be released from prison whom he feels had murdered his parents. Dwight is obviously unaccustomed to violence (he's never fired a gun) and makes one bad decision that plunges him way over his head into a harrowing murder plot that'll keep viewers on the edge of their seats.

What makes this movie so unique is how its suspense comes from slow, quiet inexorable tension punctuated with a few acts of violence that seem authentic and containing none of the sensationalism of usual Hollywood thrillers. Macon Blair is excellent as Dwight. He's not a bad ass, just an ordinary guy taking matters into his own hands. This is an intense, and refreshingly original ride from start to finish. I loved it.

The Shakedown (1960)
Augie Cortona is released from prison and sets about reclaiming his underworld business from his former henchmen and colleague Gollar who's taken control of his protection and prostitution racket and left Augie out in the cold. He bumps into out of work photographer Jessup Brown and the two of them set up in business as a high class agency which is a front for Augie's blackmailing activities.

A fascinating and slightly risque British noir b-movie. The underrated star Terence Morgan takes the main protagonist lead as a character you love to hate. The rest of the great cast includes the lovely Hazel Court as a top model, Bill Owen as Augie's cellmate, Donald Pleasence as an alcoholic photographer and Harry H. Corbett as a criminal whose accent changes as the movie goes on. There are twists and turns all over the place and even if you have some idea of what the ending is going to be, you've never quite sure what's going to take place along the way. This is a forgotten British crime movie that is worth checking out.

Rank International made some pretty odd movies in their time, and in this semi-comedy, semi-musical, they don't quite seem to know where this one is going. Donald Sinden plays a music shop assistant, Peter, who gets lumbered with Daisy the alligator on his trip home from holiday, during which time he has met Irish zoo employee Moira. The alligator gets Peter into all sorts of mischief! This is a relatively pleasant and light hearted affair but it does get silly as it progresses. There are a number of cameo appearances from the likes of Margaret Rutherford, Frankie Howerd and Jimmy Edwards. The musical numbers are a bit flat, and do not fit in very well with the movie. All in all, it's not a really good movie but you can't say it's terrible either and there is some kind of fun to be had from it all despite its shortcomings.

This is the 19th Dragon Ball movie to be released. Goku and his friends battle against one of the most famous villain in the series in Frieza who has been resurrected by some of the remnants of his old army. It perfects the mix of action and humour and creates one heck of a ride. Goku and Vegeta are the stars here and this movie includes some of the best interactions between the two characters, it's great to watch. Frieza is just as awesome as you remember him. There's an excellent mix of hand drawn and digital animation in the production. DBZ fans should enjoy this movie and won't be disappointed by what they see.

Tom Bell plays a physicist who suddenly finds himself in an alternate England after a scientific experiment. He learns that WW2 never happened, man never landed on the moon, etc but the differences in this other England are never explored and mean little to the plot. The focus is on Bell's relationship with Joan Collins. In his own world Bell is single and a scientist, in this other world he is a successful writer and married to Collins who despises him. Bell immediately falls in love with his "wife" and tries to convince her that he isn't who she thinks he is. Both Bell and Collins give good performances. Denholm Elliott appears in both worlds, one as his friend, in the other he loathes him. Although the ending was a bit abrupt, I still enjoyed this rarely seen movie.

Wind River (2017)
Written and directed by Taylor Sheridan who also penned the impressive Sicario. A young FBI female agent is sent to investigate a death of a woman. It's a very slow movie, taking place in a snowy Native American reservation. The plot was difficult to figure out and the characters less compelling than I had hoped. The acting, for what the material gave them, was good. Jeremy Renner was okay as the sad hero figure and Elizabeth Olsen as the out of place FBI agent was probably the most well-drawn character in the movie. The scenery was nice if you like a lot of snow and people flying around on snow mobiles. In the end, I found it too boring and slow for my liking.

This is supposed to be a so-called masterpiece by French director Jean-Luc Godard but all I saw was an over-rated art house movie. It's a low budget black and white movie about a woman whose promiscuity sees her descend into prostitution, and I'm afraid it's a movie which left me cold. The characters are subdued and bored and thus come across as dull in themselves. I didn't care or feel sympathy for any of them. The movie is presented in 12 vignettes but they're all very similar and the viewer doesn't really learn or understand much from watching. Thankfully it finished after 80 mins to put me out of my misery.

6 Days (2017)
A very good dramatisation of the real life Iranian Embassy siege and the subsequent storming by SAS forces that took place in London over 6 days during the early part of May 1980. The movie wastes no time and begins with the siege. It maintains tension and urgency throughout the movie, and time flies quickly. It is not easy to be the negotiator in this intense and fragile situation, and Mark Strong portrays the tough challenges very well. The movie is not a fast paced thriller nor was it intended to be. It is an honest depiction of what happened during those harrowing six days and how well the planning and execution of the SAS team handled the rescue of 24 of the 26 hostages. A very well acted and worthwhile movie that does not overdo or glorify this terrible event and illustrates excellent military type tactics still used today in similar situations.
