Based on an anime, this is the first in a trilogy of movies revolving around a rather silly Japanese card game called Karuta. Never heard about it until now to be honest and even after watching this I'm still a bit clueless as to how the game actually works but this movie tries to make it an exciting spectacle which I doubt it really is in real life. It even tries to incorporate a pointless romance angle to the proceedings. Thankfully the characters make this such a watchable movie led by the beautiful Suzu Hirose who plays the character of Chihaya. She creates a Karuta school club of 5 members who want to become school champions. It follows the team bonding and training as they prepare for a Karuta competition against other schools which includes the current champions. The movie ends on a small cliffhanger that leads on to Part 2. It's an interesting enough movie with a good cast of characters even though the Karuta game itself doesn't do anything for me.

This is a remake of the original 1981 movie with the plot having been changed as well. Yuen Biao plays a constable who gets inadvertently involved in the quarrels of several martial clans while he brings a "thief" to justice. The "thief" is a beautiful princess who had decided to have "fun" pretending to be a thief and getting arrested. Along comes the Golden Snake Man who is slightly crazed and is primed for revenge against the leader of the clans, Lord Wan, who massacred Snake Man's village and stole his wife ten years earlier. A "Poison" clan run by women, a crazy old master who bounces around like a ball, and a Manchurian who seems to have magnetic powers over swords, complete the chaos.

I honestly could not follow what takes place in this martial arts / fantasy movie as it doesn't make any sense and it's so off the wall but on saying that it's a lot of fun and the action scenes are well choreographed. There are so many great spontaneous fights, crazy special effects, magical mayhem, random and spectacular wire-fu and great comedy mixed with intense drama that it doesn't really matter if you don't know what's going on! I don't think this movie is supposed to be taken seriously. There's an excellent cast which includes the stunning Sharla Cheung and Danny Lee. If you like your HK fantasy movies fast and crazy then this will be right up your street.

Mindscape (2013)
Anna, or Mindscape as the original title goes, rides heavily on the presence and acting capabilities of its two main leads, Mark Strong as John, a psychologist with mind reading abilities, and Taissa Farmiga as Anna, his young and eerily disturbed patient. The film itself revolves around the idea that certain humans have developed their latent psychic abilities to such a degree that they can read the minds of others and thus help them overcome traumas and illnesses of the mind.

Plot-wise the movie is nothing special, being relatively easy to predict and offering no real twists, but it's more of a moodpiece in any case. I would have liked for the actual mindscape scenes to be a bit more creative and the story as a whole to be a bit more overreaching in scope, but those lacks only mean that the movie is merely good instead of great. It's still worth a watch.

Money Monster (2016)
Directed by Jodie Foster, this movie rehashes the cliché movie dramatisation of Wall Street fraud and the commonplace Americans who are the big losers in a tycoon's greed. George Clooney and Julia Roberts have good chemistry as the star television talking head Lee Gates and his hard-working producer Patty Fenn. The simplistic story is that of a "hostage drama" when Gates is held captive in the studio by a crazed investor who has lost his fortune due to a Wall Street scammer and the advice given over the air by Gates. Most of the action was predictable, and much of it was also unbelievable. The relationship of the young terrorist and his wife was entirely unconvincing. And the inaction on the part of the SWAT team, who had successfully surrounded the terrorist both in the studio and outdoors, was equally improbable. In the end, this is a bland movie that doesn't provide any surprises to viewers.

I'm not too sure exactly what 'American Fable' was trying to be. It's listed as a thriller, and there are elements to it that could certainly make it a thriller, only it doesn't feel like a thriller. The problem is I'm not sure exactly what it does feel like. It's a story that kind of just drifts along until it ends. I suspect writer/director Anne Hamilton had a vision for this movie which was to entrance the audience and create an almost fairy tale like world. Sadly though, she just seemed to find the nothingness middle ground of everything. I think that's the biggest problem with the movie is that it never commits to any direction and it never dares to be anything great. I think Hamilton had the idea right somewhere along the line, she just perhaps didn't have the writing and film making skills to put it together. Check it out and see what you think of it.

Carol (2015)
This is a great love and life story about one woman fighting for her right to be happy and another trying to figure out how can she really be happy. Each of them is the answer to the other. The script could feature more insight, but then again, the movie is supposed to be subtle and let the images speak for themselves. The cinematography is outstanding and the score is downright superb. There's a feeling, a certain atmosphere that makes the movie a one of a kind.

But in the end, I think that it all comes down to Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, as they give unforgettable, brilliant performances. They are always great, but here there's something remarkable about their performances. Some might find the movie slow moving but it is never boring. It definitely deserves to be seen.

Billed as the first colour sci-fi movie from Japan, this story has man-sized starfish creatures with a huge eye turning up in Tokyo to warn the human race that a huge glowing planetoid is on a collision course with the Earth. They have a solution on how to destroy it but the nations of the planet refuse to believe them.

You have to forgive the cheap special effects since the movie was made over 60 years ago before the invention of CGI but the story and the acting in the movie is better then you would have expected. It's also interesting to note that the story is about using nuclear weapons for survival instead of destruction. It's probably not a classic movie one would like but it's still fairly good.

Get Out (2017)
What an incredible movie this is! I absolutely loved Get Out as both a psychological and satirical horror, Jordan Peele's imagination bringing us something quite unique within the genre and showing that he has such a big future ahead as a filmmaker. Right from the opening sequence, which is one of the best openings to a horror I've seen, I knew this movie was going to be special. It felt almost as if I was watching something from a seasoned director and not a man making his directorial debut, Peele exuding confidence more and more as the movie rises through the levels of paranoia. The writing for the story is spot on as well.

As for the acting, this excels above many horror movies with a talented and strong cast. Daniel Kaluuya leads with a quite exceptional performance as Chris Washington, impressing with each passing minute as the paranoia within his character grows. Expect to see much more of Kaluuya in the future. Bradley Whitford and Catherine Keener are both devilishly charming and unnerving with their performances as Rose's parents, who take an immediate interest in Chris' life, both past and present. I don't want to spoil anything with the plot so just go and watch this movie. It's a blast from start to finish and you won't regret having watched it.

An old man who's been killed by a gambling mobster comes back to inhabit the body of a mentally handicapped young man and help his granddaughter in extracting revenge by taking the mobster's money in various gambling games.

This is a rare Taiwanese action fantasy comedy starring the bad ass female martial artist Yukari Oshima (with her voice dubbed over). Those expecting this to be full of action set pieces will be disappointed because there are only a few but the ones that are shown are really good. The majority of this movie is a comedy which is fairly funny at times with the ghost of the dead old man escaping from heaven with 2 angels dressed as punks coming after him. I expected more from this movie and whilst it's one of the better Taiwanese action comedy movies from the early 90's I've seen I was still left a little wanting in the end. One to perhaps watch if you've got nothing better to see.

Love & Mercy (2014)
The story of Beach Boys leader Brian Wilson is worthy of a movie. Neither his creative genius or his mental illness were appreciated until years after the fact. His childhood, as was Michael Jackson's 15 years later , shaped the adult life he inherited. His creative genius allowed and encouraged him to be used by others. The story is very interesting. The casting very good, the acting excellent. John Cusack hasn't been this good with Elizabeth Banks also pulling in a fine performance. Paul Dano is also brilliant. The only problem I found was it does go on for far too long but if you're a fan of The Beach Boys and their music you'll enjoy this movie.

The Insider (1999)
This is a movie that I was on the fence about seeing, simply because it seemed like just another movie about a whistle blower. It is so much more than that. It is about journalistic integrity, corporate greed, good vs. evil, and standing up for what you believe in, no matter what the cost. It pulls no punches about how far the tobacco industry would go to hide the truth from the American public about cigarettes, but it never seems propagandised. Russell Crowe and Al Pacino give top notch performances. They have the perfect blend of chemistry and timing, and fit their characters like a glove. They completely inhabit their roles and at times it seems more like a documentary than a fictional story.

From beginning to end, it has the kind of edge of your seat tension that keeps one glued to the screen. Despite being a fairly lengthy movie, it moves at a quick pace, and is absolutely riveting. The direction is superb, the camera angles are fast and furious, and it is a delight to watch.

Colossal (2016)
This was quite a unique movie for me because it wasn't what I expected it to be and it turned out to be a pleasant surprise. Anne Hathaway can be hit or miss for me, but she was excellent here. She plays Gloria, a blackout-prone alcoholic that for some reason can conjure a giant monster that destroys parts of Seoul. She is good in this movie as she presents great range with her character, easily juggling between being quirky, powerful, funny, and completely vulnerable. Don't be misled into thinking this is a kaiju movie because it isn't. It only features monsters as an allegory for domestic violence. Apart from Anne Hathaway, Jason Sudeikis also gives a very good performance as Gloria's foil. I think this movie will split opinion in viewers but I thought it was a refreshing take on looking at an abusive relationship.

Prevenge (2016)
Ruth is a seven month old pregnant woman with cravings though they aren't normal as other women. Ruth's cravings are a good deal darker. Egged on by the voice of her unborn baby girl Ruth gets a craving to kill people and it would seem with justification since all of her victims were, in some way, responsible for the death of her baby's father.

This movie in case you hadn't guessed it, is a comedy and a very black one. It was written and directed by Alice Lowe. She also plays the lead character Ruth and was pregnant in real life whilst filming this movie. Naturally, this isn't a movie that will appeal to everyone, (I think pregnant mothers should stay well clear), but if you have a very sick sense of humour and like gore then give it a go.

Right from the first moments the movie grips you in its vice and never lets go. There's a mystery at work here, and I had a lot of fun trying to figure out what was going on as the movie fed me small hints here and there before finally revealing all of its secrets near the end. There's not a whole lot I can say about the movie's plot without giving away too much, but I can say that the plot is excellent and gripping. The story may seem slightly outlandish, but it's grounded by wonderful performances by actors Dane DeHaan, Mia Goth and Jason Isaacs. It's also a real head trip at times. At times you may question whether you're witnessing a real movie or just having a bizarre dream. But that's all part of the atmosphere and is definitely to the movie's benefit. The story is top notch. The cinematography is wonderful and helps with the tense atmosphere. The acting is spot on in every aspect. Director Gore Verbinski has tight control on reins, and the result is nothing less than a spectacular and original piece of film. Very enjoyable.

A very well made Belgian satire about religion and God. This extremely imaginative movie turns the Bible inside out and puts it upside down. God is married to a dim-witted goddess, and has a young daughter who decides to expand the number of apostles from twelve to eighteen, because that is the number of players in a baseball game. During the movie, she finds six extra apostles, each of whom has some peculiarity. One is extremely beautiful but has only one arm, another one is sex obsessed since his early childhood, and one is trading in her husband for a gorilla from the zoo!

The movie is filled to the brim with visual flair: when Man is created and wandering the Earth, his groin is censored. The man notices this and tries to get rid of this black bar covering his manhood, but to no avail! There's great comedy strewn about this movie, but some of the funniest bits involve God having trouble getting used to life on Earth. After spending so long creating sadistic rules, it's hilarious to see him get a taste of his own medicine. Not every story told in the movie is funny but on the whole this is a cool movie that I enjoyed.

K-Shop (2016)
A young kebab shop owner goes psycho on his drunken customers when his father dies after being attacked outside the shop. It's a good low budget horror which captures the dark side of UK booze culture in a very entertaining way. The camera work captures the depravity that exists in UK nightlife in a way that is all too real for anybody who has been in a kebab shop past 11pm on a weekend. The creators have not held back on the realism of the most horrid scenes. Weak stomachs beware, there is no holding back! The characters are well thought out. Sadly, we have all met people who fit the bill, the cast does them all great justice. The realness of these horrible people is scarily accurate and really sucks you into the dark side of UK nightlife.

I adored the first Guardians of the Galaxy. Like many, I was blown away having gone in with no expectations, and laughed and grinned through the entire thing so the stakes were high for the sequel. I shouldn't have worried though as this movie is frikking amazing. From the very first scene where the rich visuals filled my eyes to the laughs and action and thoughtful moments that made up the rest of this movie; they managed to take all that was great about the first and ramp it up. It's hard for me to find anything negative about this movie so I won't even try. This is THE best movie of 2017 I've seen so far and if you loved the first movie you're guaran-damn-teed to enjoy this one.

Although the story about the iconic flag raising picture on the island of Iwo Jima has been done better by the movie that Clint Eastwood made, this one isn't that bad in the end. John Wayne is the badass Sgt John Stryker who is given the task of moulding a platoon of marines before they engage the Japanese. He even got an Oscar nomination for his role in this movie. Stryker is a sad, tender, tough, gritty, determined and courageous character but also a man who admits his own faults and doesn't pretend to be a hero. The battle scenes are mixed in with real life footage of the assault on Mount Sorabachi. Some may find this movie unrealistic due to its sanitised language and relatively meager gore (remember, it was made in 1949) but its themes are timeless: duty, honour and country. Overall a great WWII movie.

The Boss Baby (2017)
I'm not entirely sure what I was expecting, seeing from the trailers I knew it was going to be another cliché Dreamworks movie. Even before the Boss Baby was introduced, it was pretty obvious how it was going to play out. The kid has an overactive imagination, he imagines the baby is taking over his home life, and it resolves with the baby acting like a normal baby. And that's exactly what happens, albeit in a more complicated way, but in a nutshell. The only redeeming thing from this movie were the visuals. The humour in the movie falls flat. Nothing really stands out. A predictable movie and typical of Dreamworks' output these days.

This is a pretty simple stoner movie. It's about two identical twin brothers (both played by Edward Norton) who live completely different lives. One decided to study classics and teach out of Brown University. The other decided to study marijuana and build his empire in the heart of Oklahoma. When the marijuana business goes south, the cultured classics professor is forced to head the the small town swamps to help his brother. What ensues is both equally interesting and entertaining, but quite frankly doesn't deliver on the comedy that the premise is clearly built upon. Edward Norton really steals the show here portraying the twins. Despite the performance and the interesting intertwining story of brother helping brother, it's not a particularly funny movie. Some critics has said this is a hidden gem but I wouldn't agree with that at all. It's good but not that good.

A good Danish horror about a 19-year-old girl Marie who discovers about her mother's strange disease and finds that she is slowly being transformed into a werewolf by the same hereditary disease. It's a slow burner of a movie but one that is fairly intense at the same time. The movie is shot nicely, edited well, scored appropriately, acted decently especially by the lead Sonia Suhl, and even directed with some careful finesse. The story builds to a great climax aboard a fishing boat. You'd think with a short running time of 82 mins this movie would have a fast pace about it but it doesn't. The gore doesn't really appear until the second half. Although billed as a horror, I'd say it's more of a drama. Overall I thought it was an enjoyable movie with a new slant on the werewolf genre.

Controversial at the time of it's release, this documentary charts the story of modern day witchcraft and shows through re-enactments several rituals that the religion performs such as Black Mass and the initiation of a new member into a coven. It's a very atmospheric piece with great cinematography. I think the biggest fuss of all about this documentary was the copious amount of nudity on display but this is to expected if they're showing the viewers just what goes on in dark witchcraft ceremonies. Animal lovers might be distressed at seeing a chicken killed and it's entrails fondled by a witch. I don't think it gives an accurate portrayal of all forms of witchcraft - it's just wants to glamourise the sensationalist side of the religion. An interesting but flawed documentary.

A classic Japanese alien invasion movie with an anti-war message to it. The movie opens with a UFO sighting, and a passenger plane being knocked out of the sky and forced to crash land in a quarry. From there, evil starts to infect the survivors of the airplane, and a desperate battle for survival is on. All levels of conflict ensue: characters turn against each other, the environment, and even themselves. This isn't one of those typical rubber suit movies where a giant beast smashes everything in sight while being shot at by toy airplanes. This is a slick, well-done horror/sci-fi that blends many elements and does it well. A bit of a downbeat ending with a big invasion fleet in space heading towards planet Earth. A lost gem of the horror/sci-fi genre, worth seeing.

Based on a true story set during the early stages of the Korean War, it's about a group of South Korean soldiers who have to infiltrate into the North Korean army and find out where mines have been laid outside the waters of Incheon in order for a land invasion of Allied troops led by General MacArthur played by Liam Neeson. The dramatic story is full of action and supported by a good screenplay, direction and performances. I will admit that I had little to zero knowledge before going into this and it does teach a bit of history which might not matter to a lot of people. It might not be the best war movie I've seen from Korea over the years but I enjoyed it and it was entertaining enough.

Lowlife Love (2015)
A drama about the people operating in the lower levels of the Japanese movie industry. It is somewhat based on what the writer of the movie has seen and heard over the years from working in the industry. It's about a director still trying to live off his reputation from making an indie movie years ago but too lazy to really direct a second. He also runs an acting school for deluded actresses to whom he promises roles in his next movie but in actually all he's really interested is bedding them. The movie is controversial due to it's treatment of women. It's an interesting movie showing how people are used and abused in the industry but if you're pretty smart you can use that to your advantage which is what the female lead Minami does. A worthwhile watch.

Quiz Show (1994)
This drama is mostly riveting and it has an interesting story to tell. It's a well-directed movie by Robert Redford. The acting is great by everybody. My only problem is this movie runs a little too long and it seems stale at some points. It's based on a true story. In 1958, NBC started a game show craze especially with their hit show 21. When champion Herb Stampel is kicked out and replaced by the popular Charles Van Doren, NBC comes under fire as it's revealed that the champions may have been given the answers to the questions.

As mentioned before, the acting is phenomenal. John Turturro and Ralph Fiennes are great in their respective roles as the champions. David Paymer certainly makes a slimy guy. Overall it was a good movie about corruption and it was mostly entertaining.

Lassie (2005)
I've watched various movies featuring the dog Lassie over the years and this one is just as good as them. Set during the onset of WWII in Yorkshire, Lassie the rough collie is sold by a poor family to a Duke who takes her up to Scotland. There she escapes and makes her down back South to reunite with her young master. It's a wonderful heartwarming family movie. The scenery and cinematography is homely, wild and beautiful and the cast is excellent which includes Peter O'Toole. You will find yourself rooting for the lovable dog and will I think be more than satisfied with the ending! Be prepared to shed a few tears as well. If you aren't an animal lover this is certainly not for you, but if you have a soft spot for our furry friends you will definitely like it. If you have ever had a faithful dog as a pet it should touch you particularly - it celebrates the loyal nature of the canine and the fulfilling relationships humans can build with them. Recommended.

This is a drama about a successful painter who has a breakdown following the tragic death of his wife. The story follows how this affects the lives of his two boys. A sparse and haunting soundtrack is the perfect accompaniment to this bleak drama. Tommy Flanagan is great as the husband struggling to cope with his enormous grief despite knowing that it is affecting his children. Tom Payne is also good as the responsible older brother. Although this movie lacks standout moments it always holds your attention thanks to it's fine cast. As you'd expect this is not a fun movie to watch but does a great job of showing how hard grief can hit us all. Winter is a very good emotional drama done on a small budget. Recommended.

A sub-par Carry-On style farce centering on students at a dental school. Kenneth Connor plays a thief who pilfers some dentistry tools after going to the wrong premises and tries to flog them on to the students led by Bob Monkhouse. When the police start sniffing about that the tools might be at the school, the students start to panic.

After a good start, the movie goes downhill fast and never recovers. For a so-called comedy there isn't much in the way of laughs to be had especially during the second half. The problem lies with the script itself which was unfortunately co-written in some scenes by Bob Monkhouse himself. I have no problem with the cast who do the best they can with the material given to them. Not worth watching if I'm perfectly honest.

The 8th F&F movie is a bit of a step down from the last couple of movies and IMO should have stopped at the last one but with it pulling over a billion dollars at the box office over the world I guess money talks and they've made this one. It's the most ludicrous and far-fetched entry yet in the franchise. On saying that, it's still an enjoyable fun and mindless action movie with a stellar cast, which continues the escalating mayhem of previous entries. The action for the most part is well directed and often spectacular. Jason Statham and Dwayne Johnson add great presence to the movie and really elevate the scenes they are in. The scene with Jason Statham and a baby probably being the stand out scene in the movie. I didn't think Charlize Theron made for a memorable villain. If you're a long time fan of the series you're definitely going to enjoy this movie. Is there still enough steam in the franchise for it to carry on? Well that'll depend on how well it does at the box office but it wouldn't surprise me to see another F&F movie in the near future.

A collection of several stories about people lying which takes place on April Fool's Day in Japan - a pregnant woman holding people hostage at a cafe with a gun as her lover tries to seduce somebody else there, an elderly couple from the Royal Family visit a hamburger joint, a teenage boy at school who is convinced that he's about to be taken away by aliens, a gangster who kidnaps a teenage girl but doesn't want any ransom money and there are a couple of others not worth mentioning. It somehow tries to say that it's fine to lie on this day! I'm not sure if this movie is a comedy or a drama and I'm not sure the filmmakers knew either when making it. There are several humourous moments but not enough to give anybody any belly laughs. A problem I've always found with these kind of Japanese movies is they tend to go on for far too long and this one is a prime example. There a big ensemble cast in this movie and I'd say the one that stands out most is Erika Toda. It's not a movie that I'd really recommend to anybody but one to watch perhaps on a dull and rainy Sunday afternoon.

Apparently this was the 1st Japanese movie to have a vampire as a villain in a modern setting. Japanese vampires aren't the same as those in the West...well not this one anyway. Firstly it's the light of a full moon that transforms the person into a vampire, it's reflection can be seen in mirrors and holy crosses doesn't seem to affect it. Oddly enough it doesn't seem to drink a lot of blood either! It's an enjoyable enough tale about a woman that returns after being missing for 20 years and she hasn't aged at all. For an 80 min movie the pace is brisk and there's plenty of action. It tries though to mix elements of old Western horror movies a bit too much for my liking instead of concentrating on the vampire genre. It comes down to a climax in which the family of the woman confronts the vampire at his cave lair in the country. It's a bit of a hotchpotch this movie in the end but old school horror fans have plenty to keep them entertained.

A wonderful debut from director Amir Lily Amirpour. Shot on a shoe-string in gorgeous black and white, this is a funny, dead-pan, creepy, punky, sweet, sly, smart, violent, sexy, mysterious, loaded with style, and the most off-beat celebration of feminism and girl-power I may have ever seen on screen. Great use of music too. It's a vampire story set in an alternate universe that looks like barren, poor, poverty stricken post-industrial America, but where everyone speaks Farsi, and our anti-heroine wears a chador while skateboarding through the night. At it's heart this is an odd, sort-of love story between a feminist avenger vampire and a lost young guy who is burned out with caring for his heroin-addict father. Sheila Vand is excellent as the vampire somehow managing to be fragile and sinister at the same time. I was glad to have seen this stylish movie.

I'm a big fan of the various GITS anime movies and series that's been released over the years. I came into this movie expecting to be disappointed by it all but I came out feeling more positive. OK, it will NEVER surpass the original movie and I know that with all the controversy about whitewashing etc there will be always be haters but if you do intend to see this movie don't try to compare it to the original. Of course it's gonna be different but come into this movie with an open mind and I think you'll be surprised but how good it is.

Much has been said about Scarlett Johansson's casting as The Major but I can seriously say she did a great job. I also enjoyed Beat Takeshi as Aramaki and Pilou Asbaek as The Major's partner Batou. Visually, the movie is absolutely stunning and the action sequences are exciting. Although the movie wasn't filmed in Japan, the neon skyline of Hong Kong serves the story well. The storyline has been tweaked slightly from the original but it doesn't really make a difference. So on the whole I give this Hollywood remake a thumbs up. I hope there'll be a sequel as it deserves one.

More shenanigans at a boarding school for boys in South Africa in the early 90's as Spud and his gang (The Crazy 8) are targeted by their house teacher who will do anything to get them all expelled. As this movie doesn't have to establish any of the characters, the movie dives right into their mischief and escapades. However, the bullying is nastier, more malicious in nature and has far greater consequences. John Cleese returns as Spud's beloved book teacher and Troye Sivan delivers a more subdued and angst-filled performance as the title character. This movie is a lot of fun and just as good as the first movie with it's larger than life characters. Give it a shot.

This is the sequel to the original movie that came out in 2015 which I haven't seen yet. It's yet another dull and generic Japanese slasher movie based on a game / manga. A group of teenagers go back in time through the use of a finger bone to try and save their classmates who were killed by a weird looking young girl in the first movie. If seeing teenagers running about in dark school corridors being picked off in various bloody ways is your thing then you'll enjoy this movie but I'd rather see something with an interesting storyline and a cast than can act rather than this piece of crap. A total waste of time.

You'd expect Reg Varney of On The Buses fame to give a hilarious or maybe even a bawdy performance in this type of movie but we see another side of him in this tragic comedy. He gives a genuinely affecting performance as Sherry - an aging cross dressing entertainer at a holiday camp. It's an emotionally hard hitting piece as Sherry fails to realise that his career is coming to an end and his endless boasting of having performed in front of the Queen fails to convince people that he still has a future. The plot goes down a dark path towards the climax as Sherry's world comes crumbling down. Reg Varney gives one of his best performance of his career in this movie. I was surprised as I expected him to portray a cheeky rude character similar to his most famous role of Stan Butler. For those that want to see a different and slightly serious side of Varney check out this underrated movie.

Summertime (2015)
This movie is about a forbidden love between two women and very much aimed at celebrating feminism in France during the 70's. It gives us an insight into the struggles for equal rights faced by women at the time and celebrating female empowerment centered around a beautifully engaging love story between the two main characters. There is undeniably a strong chemistry between both the central characters which engrosses the audience, from the moment they meet. French filmmaker Catherine Corsini has crafted a beautiful movie with gorgeous shots of the country around Limousin and superb performances from Izia Higelin and Cecile De France as the main leads. The soundtrack has some songs by Janis Joplin which enhances the movie. The movie is a human drama that grabs you from the start to the end and well worth taking a look at.

This movie was a critical and box office success at the time due in part to what was some fairly straight forward dialog about sex. It also had an Oscar winning performance from the French actress Simone Signoret. Looking at it now I can't see what the big fuss was all about. The plot is about a man conducting a love affair with two women. He's only going with one as he wants to climb the greasy pole at his workplace and her family is rich. I didn't find the movie to be engaging at all and found my interest waning. The cinematography showing the grimy streets of a Northern town in the late 50's is interesting enough. The acting isn't special and not sure why Signoret was chosen for an Oscar for her performance here. Yes, she's competent enough in her role but enough to recieve a gong? No, I don't think so. It's only an average movie in the end which doesn't justify the numerous plaudits that's been given to it.

Ilo Ilo (2013)
This movie does a good job of portraying the life of a middle-class Singaporean family. Set during the 1997 financial crisis, it revolves around one family's everyday struggles and their uneasy relationship with their newly hired Filipino maid. With both parents busy working, naughty 10-year-old Jiale is left to the maid's care. His antics get her into trouble, but they gradually form a close bond. Pregnant with a second child, the mother struggles to cope with the demands of work and family. The father is retrenched and despite all his efforts, is unable to find a job with comparable pay, forcing the family to cut back significantly.

Although there was no proper storyline, the movie was engaging throughout and zoomed in on the struggles that each character faced. Angeli Bayani is superb as Teresa the maid. I loved watching the jealousy that was developing from the mother as her son starts to bond with Teresa. A fantastic debut for director Anthony Chen.

Defendor (2009)
A tragic action-adventure movie about a mentally challenged man who works as a traffic sign holder by day, but who becomes Defendor by night. Armed with his club, marbles, firecrackers, and angry hornets, Defendor emerges from his secret hideout, helping others and stopping punks, in his effort to find Captain Industry and bring him down. His exploits pique the interests of a girl, a family, and eventually a whole town. By his youthful wisdom, determined and fearless bravery, he gains many admirers who voice support for his cause. Woody Harrelson and Kat Dennings give amazing performances. Even though more people enjoy Kick Ass as it's similar you'd be a fool to miss out on this movie.

London Town (2016)
This is a fabulous coming of age story, set against the back drop of London in the 70's and the music of The Clash. The movie is cleverly put together with a great mix of humour, emotion, gritty reality and music of The Clash. The plot is about a teenage boy who faces a series of misfortunes, and ends up having to make a living while taking care of his young sister. He perseveres through the hardship, and meets the famous rock star from The Clash, and his life is changed for the better. The acting is great particularly Daniel Huttlestone as Shay, although little Alice steals the show more than once! Jonathan Rhys Meyers could be Joe Strummer, with his attitude and great voice. A very entertaining and watchable movie.

Hollywood-slick rendering of the classic myth/story of star crossed lovers out of Britain's Dark Ages: the clandestine match of the orphaned nephew of an English Lord and the daughter of the King of Ireland. The movie was beautifully done. The costumes, the sets and props, choreography and the cinematography was fantastic. The cast was great. Sophia Myles was illuminating as Isolde with good performances also by James Franco and Rufus Sewell. There were slight changes to the legend, a bit of tweaking and some things were completely left out. Overall, a very enjoyable and engaging drama romance movie.

Brave Story (2006)
A below average anime much in the same vein as Spirited Away in which Wataru enters a fantasy world by the name of Vision in order to save his parents' marriage which is crumbling. Wataru has to face several challenges and grow as a person if he has any chance of getting his parents back together. The storyline is nothing special. It just didn't hook me in for some reason, the characters are bland and the pacing is off. The ending seemed to be rushed as well with a rather strange climax which gives the impression that a sequel is going to continue the story but I guess that never happened. This movie has it's fans especially those who like Dungeons & Dragons but the weak storyline and 'meh' characters makes this an anime I wouldn't really recommend.

This movie is based on a true story in which 13 Chinese sailors were murdered in Thailand and drugs were found on them. Who murdered them remains a mystery? The movie purports to tell the official version agreed upon by the Chinese and Thai governments. A group of Chinese special forces are sent into Thailand to flush out an evil drug organisation they think killed the sailors.

I usually like movies by Dante Lam but this one is rather dull. The action scenes I will agree are great but in between those scenes the story is boring and I inevitably switched off. It just goes on for long. A good 30 mins should have been cut to make the story flow better. If you've got the patience for it you might enjoy the movie but for those expecting non stop action I'm afraid you're gonna be disappointed. It's not a total bust this movie but there are better Dante Lam movies you should watch before seeing this one.

Creepy (2016)
Director Kiyoshi Kurosawa has really carved out a place for himself in the world of horror cinema. After some time exploring non-horror projects, he has returned with "Creepy", which blends American-style serial killer thrillers with horror themes unique to Japan. The movie is definitely a slow burner. At over two hours, very little happens in the first half. We come to understand why Takakura retired from the police force, and we meet his creepy neighbour Nishino, who has very poor social skills. But not one instance of horror can be pointed to – no jumps, no ghosts, nothing out of place. There is a death that occurs as part of a hostage situation, but it lies firmly in the category of a police / action scene, not horror. The slower pace and build-up might make the movie seem like a thriller or suspense rather than straight horror. But the horror aspects make themselves known in the second half and we are treated to some over-the-top imagery. Prolific actor Hidetoshi Nishijima makes a great leading man, exuding confidence and charm. Of course, the real star of the movie is Teruyuki Kagawa, who expertly displays an awkward way of speaking and moving as Nishino. Kurosawa has another winner on his hands with "Creepy" and it's well worth your time seeking it out.

Top Fighter 2 (1996)
This is a documentary highlighting the female action stars of Hong Kong cinema past. It seems like the producers made a list of all the women kung fu stars they could think of and then presented a series of mini-biographies on them, coupled with interviews of them giving their views on various subjects. Some of the stars that feature include: Moon Lee, Yukari Oshima, Elaine Lui, Michelle Yeoh, Cynthia Khan, Sophia Crawford, Michiko Nishikawa, Cynthia Rothrock, and Angela Mao. The main reason you'll want to watch this is for the plethora of fight scenes offered. Almost all of the performers are accompanied by one to three brawls from movies they've appeared in, and considering that these are stars from different eras of Hong Kong filmmaking, the result is a diverse and rich collage of kung fu. Most disappointingly, the documentary doesn't provide the titles to most of the movies it highlights, so good luck to you if you're interested in finding the ones that look interesting for yourself. Still, a good documentary, if like myself you love female action stars in HK action movies.
