Terry Gilliam has been one of my favorite writers, directors, and animators since I first got into Monty Python in the mid 80s. I love the ways he mixes darkness and humor, as well as his frequent celebrations of imagination.

Here's more or less how I would rank his films.

(List title inspired by Xanadon't's Scorsese list, with his permission.)

Good looking list man, just as I always expect. Like your intro here and "...frequent celebrations of imagination" is an excellent way to put it.

Gilliam has always been a hit & miss director with me. (a bit like Kubrick) I generally can always appreciate his signature style even if I don't enjoy it, and respect his talent. But just doesn't appeal to my wave length as consistently as a lot of directors. In fact I sturggle to think of anyone else whose work I range so drastically in my personal response.

Anyway, good to see a tribute to him done well here!

This list just reminds me of how much I really need to watch Time Bandits sometime. I've only been told to watch it at least a hundred times from a friend and many seem to rank it high up in his films.

Nice list.
Our ratings are pretty much the same, but the order is not.
Check out my list... :)

curious - has anyone seen the "butchered" version of Brazil - the one with the happy ending, different modern (for the 80s) music and dream sequences taken out?

@xxixii - I have the happy ending version of Brazil (I own the Criterion Collection DVD) but haven't brought myself to watch it yet.

Loved the Python movies, Time Bandits and 12 Monkeys - still need to check out Brazil, The Fisher King (had no idea he directed that film or I might of checked it out by now) and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas - hoping to get to all three in the new year :)
