So what exactly makes a game atmospheric? We tend to associate things like mist or fog as evocative of atmosphere. But is that enough to make a game or movie atmospheric? I don't think so. I've seen horror movies where mist is just as much the main character as actors e.g. The Mist (2007), and I've never once felt that film was atmospheric. You can have all the mists you want, but if you can't make me feel anything out of it I don't think it counts. I'm pretty discerning in what I consider as an atmospheric game, which is its ability to instil a sense of isolation within the player through the use of its surroundings, aesthetics, dialogue, emotions, music and sound design. It might not be one size fits all, but that's how best I can describe and understand my feelings towards the media I deem as such. My hats off to the ones who can fulfil that achievement even with a populated and crowded environment.

The game The Suffering has it too. The prison obviously helps but you feel it and you feel the constant pain and torture of the souls there.

I've not had the chance to play that game but I remember it from one of the now defunct gametrailers top 10 horror game lists. From the little that I've seen and heard it does sound interesting.

Nice selection but i'm very surprised that you didn't included Skyrim and Bioshock who as amazing atmosheres.

@Oliver: Thank you!

@Dark Warrior: Thanks. Skyrim just didn't cut the mustard for me, I'm pretty lukewarm in general with regards to whatever Bethesda puts out. As for Bioshock, I would definitely class that as an atmospheric game and I respect some people and publications for including it as their number 1 choice, but it just didn't have the same kind of impact on me for it to grace this list. :) System Shock 2 (the game that inspired it) has a good shout though, the atmosphere in that game is unlike anything I've ever experienced in my life.

I instantly thought of Majora's Mask when reading the title and your notes.

@Bml93: The story does go some way in helping to suffuse the game with an enigmatic quality. Enough to be emotionally engaged, but not enough to pull me into its universe. In other words, I still feel like sitting on my butt with a controller in my hand.

It doesn't scream out 'atmosphere' the way say Ocarina did so resoundingly. The dungeons in that game had clear distinctive themes of their own and the amazing music and sfx to grant them character. I felt the hollowness inside the Deku Tree, the oppressive heat of the Fire Temple, the stench of death from the bottom of the well. This is what appeared to be lacking in Majora's Mask despite the impressive Stone Tower Temple and other areas it has over Ocarina I must admit.

Brilliant list. I still haven't much to my shame played Silent Hill 2, for some reason a second hand copy reaches quite a high price and my habit of stinginess hasn't allowed it. I'm sure I'll get around to it at some point though. Have you played Metroid Prime? that's an amazingly atmospheric game and probably my all time favourite (at least this week lol).

Thank you. I've played it and although I am fond of its gameplay, its fast-paced action and seemingly endless waves of enemies means that there's too much going on to make it a game where I can fully appreciate the pains they took in creating the world. I really like the tracks "Phendrana Drifts" and "Inside the Crashed Space Pirate Frigate" though; they're the high points of the game in evoking atmosphere which I find better listened as standalone.

"fast-paced action and seemingly endless waves of enemies" blimey, really? Never heard Metroid described in such a way before, but none the less you're entitled to your opinion. Indeed as you say those tracks are excellent.

Suffice to say, my observations would probably be more on point playing it fresh and not reliant upon memories of a game I played possibly ten years ago. From what I remember, it was just a little fast and action-oriented which provided little room for me to stop and smell the roses so to speak. Your mileage could be different though.

Oh Iv'e played it pretty fresh, I have the Trilogy. Ah but our opinions of the game clearly differs greatly, fair enough. I would say that it is a game that is widely regarded for its use of atmosphere and exploration as opposed to a brainless shooter, but oh well doesn't look as though I will change your mind lol.

I certainly agree with Shadowman (though that IS a game I haven't played for ten years, longer actually.).

We agree that it's a well-made game though. I'm sure its heart is in the right place when it's trying to replicate the model of Super Metroid into 3d but it doesn't quite suck me in this time round sorry. It's atmospheric to me in that same strata as those suggested by others and through which Deus Ex (my favourite game of all time which didn't make the list) occupy.
