Why?
Deus Ex is undoubtedly one of the most rewarding, intelligent and involving games I've ever played. To this day I still try to complete it at least once a year and think it puts many modern releases to shame.

What would I change?
Deus Ex would get a complete graphical overhaul in order to set a much better techno-noir scene. This would also improve the stealth capabilities of your character as you could actually tell what's supposed to be shadow cover and what isn't.

It would also allow more realistic character models and thus more realistic hit boxes. Hours of fun would ensue if you could aim for individual limbs and cripple your enemies before finishing them off with merciless headshots!

Some of the most memorable moments in-game are conversations with street punks and useless NPCs. I would add many more of these into the game, and allow them to play a part in small, optional side-quests.

What would I keep the same?
Certain things absolutely must not be touched. These include the plot line, the (occasionally hilarious) voice acting, the soundtrack and the ability to sneak through the game without killing a single foe.

The facial expressions, detail and gestures from Mass Effect are quite well done. I'd pay good money to see JC Denton's face in high-definition dead pan.

Final Fantasy VII - PlayStation
Year of release:
1997

Why?
I've sunk a ridiculous amount of hours into this game and know both its back story and gameplay better than I do my own neighbourhood. It looks every day of its 12 years and since a remake has been rumoured for a few years, I think there's definitely an audience for it. Of course, any remake would result in more fan boy boners than a naked picture of Chun-Li, but not everyone who plays it is a 13 year old virgin!

What would I change?
The graphics are tantamount to GBH in their current format. They were something special when first released, but now technology has moved on. I'd LOVE to see this game re engineered to a graphical standard that equalled Square's FMV capabilities.

I'd also remove the few translation errors in the dialogue and add more explanation regarding certain events in the game. More hidden events and Easter eggs wouldn't go amiss either.

I'd replace the text box dialogue with predominantly voice acting, as they've done in recent Final Fantasy games. HOWEVER, considering they got it so badly wrong in Advent Children and FFX, I'd keep a watchful eye on the casting of voice actors.

I'd oversee that the soundtrack remained the same, but was played on real instruments instead of a midi synthesiser. Oh yeah, and the soundtrack wouldn't be as embarrassingly OTT as Advent Children was.

What would I keep the same?
I'd absolutely positively make NO reference to any of the turgid money spinning games, films or anime series' that emerged after the success of this game. The original story is a complete package, leaving enough to the imagination of the player but tying up the majority of loose ends. I wouldn't allow it to become an attempt to cover up any glaring plot holes that don't fit with Square's cash cow spin off ideas.

I'd also keep the characters abilities within the realms of believability! I don't want to turn Cloud and his party into demigods who can leap straight up to heaven whilst shitting on physics.

If there's one thing Square has the ability to do well, it's animate its characters. Imagine seeing the kind of graphics used in Advent Children on a console game? Only in my remake, folks!

Why?
Tiberian Sun has all the ingredients to be a fantastic game, but somehow it just underachieved, the outcome didn't do the premise any justice at all.

What would I change?
The graphics on the units looked dated even before the game was released, I'd improve them, add a zoom in/out function and allow the player to scroll around the battlefield in a 3D manner. I'd love to improve the graphics on the maps as well to convey the utterly bleak, desolate landscapes that the war is fought on.

I'd love to have an encyclopaedic type back story that lets me know how the rest of the world is dealing with Tiberium and what its consequences are for the planet. I'd relay this information in an EVA style educational video vault (like how Kane educates you in the original C&C!) rather than thousands of words in text.

I'd remove the game-ruining Hunter-Seeker drone as well!

I'd also take it out of Electronic Arts' hands, as Red Alert 3 and Generals has shown that they couldn't care less about the C&C genre. Their cut scenes from RA3 are proof that they can't be entrusted with attempting a serious storyline, and Tiberium Wars didn't blow me away either.

What would I keep the same?
The cast list! It's unparalleled genius. The storyline is perfect as it is, as are the between-mission FMVs that are a trademark of C&C games.

Imagine seeing your troops get shot up or mutated into tiberium fiends in total hi-res 3D glory!

Resident Evil 2 - PlayStation
Year of release: 1998

Why?
RE2 was one of my favourite games as a child, but it could've been better with some fairly minor changes. It was an intelligent game filled with tonnes of memorable scenes and Easter eggs, I'd love to play a modern version of it.

What would I change?
The controls! The predominantly third-person view is fine, and allows for some really eerie camera angles (eg, looking at you from outside a building, highlighting your vulnerability), but in combat I'd always like to be behind the character so I can see what I'm shooting at. A button that zooms the camera back to behind my head would be nice. While we're on the subject, the whole spinning-on-an-axis method of aiming is almost unplayable!

Obviously, improved graphics are a must as well. I'd like to see the brain juice dripping from the ceiling-hugging licker before he pounces on me.

I'd also add at least 20% more ammo to the game! Blowing away zombies is fun, don't make me run around them all!

I couldn't resist giving Leon a more manly voice...

What would I keep the same?
Definitely the soundtrack, it's one of my favourites in a game. The split character stories and how they interact are rewarding and add re-playability to the game. I love the settings as well, particularly the police station. The level of gore and shocks were just right for me, it wasn't overdone and didn't make you soil yourself in every corridor. The pacing was just right.

Shadow of the Colossus - PlayStation 2
Year of release: 2005

Why?
This game is a triumph, it deserves to evolve with the technology. There's nothing wrong with the PS2 version, but imagine how better it would be if it was smartened up?

What would I change?
The only let down I found with this game was the frame rate, sometimes the fast-paced action wasn't handled very well using the PS2s dated hardware. Adding some crystal clear, Crysis style beauty would make such a grandiose game even better and do the colossi some serious justice.

Maybe I'd add a few more random encounters/beasts into the wilderness as well. The landscape is beautiful, but you share it only with a raven and some lizards. Other animals might make ruin exploration more rewarding, and appease the lugheads who moan about having nothing to do in the game.

Just to elongate the game I would imagine some extra colossi too. Take the total up to twenty to give an excuse to create more beautiful arenas to fight them in.

What would I keep the same?
The soundtrack, the gameplay, the ambiguity of the storyline, the controls and the time trials. Just about everything else.

Half-Life - PC Games
Year of release: 1998

Why?
Half-Life is one of the greatest and most important FPS games of all time. Its sequels continue to fly the flag proudly, but alien foes are noticeably lacking.

What would I change?
I'd love to see this game brought to life in the Source engine. Imagine the extra detail, improved graphics and worthwhile physics coming to play at Black Mesa! It might make the alien enemies look more menacing, as they don't really feel like a threat. The multitude of weapons could be reinvigorated with superior physics, too.

Improved graphics and textures might make the Xen part of the game feel less awkward and I'd make is less easy to miss vital parts of the plot if you stray too far from a guy who's supposedly telling you what to do.

I'd add in a few more three way battles between the marines, the aliens and Black Mesa personnel, they always end in a hilarious blood bath. A few more intelligent sighting of the G-Man wouldn't go amiss either.

Just for the sake of it, I'd give the poor old scientists a few more lines of dialogue.

What would I keep the same?
The puzzles are integral to the game. They could be improved with enhanced physics, but they have to remain a part of the game play! I'd also keep the hilarious scripted deaths of many hapless security personnel and scientists.

I love the way the story is revealed throughout Half-Life games, I'd absolutely avoid the use of discarded PDAs/E-mails/data logs/tapes/voice recordings/answer phone messages etc that other games use in abundance to try and give back story to events. I'd also make sure Freeman never talks and keep the trademark Ospreys as troop transports.

Just for the laughs, I'd keep the HECU marine radio commands in tact as they are now.

Shogun: Total War - PC Games
Year of release:
2000

Why?
The Total War series continues to evolve, but concentrates mainly on the European theatre now. These games are fine, but I doubt there are many people who would disagree with how game-worthy samurai are and how interesting they perform as warriors! Just because they came first, Creative Assembly seems to have forgotten them. I'd love to see Shogun given a modern make over.

What would I change?
The unit cap in Shogun was quite frustrating, I'd at least make it higher to make the battles even more epic. I'd dream up more unit types in the game as the current selection is too small and this restricts tactics during battle.

I'd remove the time limit for campaign completion! Surely one of the worst ideas ever for a game of this calibre. I don't care if it reaches 2009 and I'm still fighting for Japan on horseback, it takes as long as it takes.

Adding in Empire Total War battle graphics goes without saying. Zooming in on realistic individual one-on-ones is a luxury, especially when your warrior monks are battling peasants.

What would I keep the same?
The absence of proper naval warfare (which has become over complicated in future Total War games) is something I'd welcome, I'm not sure Samurai's are renowned for their seafaring.

THE MAP would be left the same. The pure simplicity of each province being a single turn's march away is something I miss greatly from future Total War games. In fact, the new map system makes me miserable; an enemy army can just stroll into your capital without it even notifying you, I prefer some notification that my borders are breached!

If I was able to sanction the remake of any game, I'd choose from the following. A remake is a delicate thing. At all costs you want to maintain the ingredients that initially captivated you, but you might also take risks and try and improve it here and there.

The high ratings I've given these games highlight how much emotional investment I've given them. I've chosen graphical upgrades as standard for each item, then tried to be sparse in my other recommended improvements.

I'm with you on the RE2 & FF7 remake. Would be awesome.

I agree with all except the Ico remake. Just a little to soon, but then again...
Excellent list!

I agree - I want a Tiberium Sun remake. I don't particularly want to see my troops mutated into tiberium fiends in total hi-res 3D glory but I was never a fan of gore. I'd be tempted to to try to re-do the story line slightly so that the Nod & GDI don't have contradictory endings.

Your Half-Life remake wish is nearly done. Its slated for end of 2009 release, as a free game if you own Half Life 2.

Search for 'Black Mesa' on listal, or in google.

Half Life source has been out for years but they didn't massively improve the graphics ( http://store.steampowered.com/app/280/ )

That Black Mesa project looks pretty cool.

Yep, well aware of those two half-life mods/games. HL:S was a let down, I could barely tell the difference, it was a total disappointment compared to what I was expecting!

Black Mesa looks much better though. It might just tie me over until Episode III decides to come out.

I would like to see GTA San Andreas remade. Or just use the city again in a new game.

Isn't GTA the video game equivalent of Two and a Half Men?

Good list GA. Surely you want to see some revitalised Star Wars Flight Sims on the market too!

Yay for Deus Ex being number one!
