My favorite game when I was twelve. Not anymore, but still good.

Batman: Arkham Origins - PlayStation 3
28.12.

Another great addition to the Arkham series. I'm kinda glad that they didn't try to improve much gameplay wise, since Arkham City pretty much nailed it in that department. They only give you some new gadgets and there are more different kinds of enemies, like martial arts experts and these big venom-enhanced fuckers. Also the boss battles, though awesome in the previous games, are now even better. Every boss fight is different in some way, and it's nice sometimes to just have an honest hand-to-hand combat with some master assassin. They didn't have anything like that in the previous games, most of the boss fights were just huge monsters you had to overcome with your gadgets.

The story isn't anything fancy, mostly an excuse for having a lot of boss fights. But that's fine, the boss fights are the best parts anyway and the characters themselves are enough to keep me interested, even if the story around them isn't anything mind blowing.

It's just too bad that game seems to be kinda buggy. I actually had to start this game over twice, because my first save got fucked up. It didn't get corrupted, but for some reason, whenever I loaded the game, it started with Batman flying in the middle of the ocean and just falling into nothingness. There are also lot of little bugs, like some buttons don't work at times or a starting point for a mission can't be found even though it's on the map. I guess they'll fix these things in time, but I would've rather waited for a finished game, than get it full of glitches and have to update it all the time.

Max Payne 3 - PC Games
23.12.

The third and probably final installment to the great game series known as Max Payne, isn't that great. At least, not as a Max Payne game.

Apart from the character Max Payne, the action and the few flashback bits, this game isn't that Max Payney. I wouldn't have a problem with the whole Brazil thing, if I just could understand Portuguese. But here's the thing; a lot of the charm of the first two games came from the humour, and lot of the humour came from random thugs arguing about the stupidest things. But since they are not speaking a language I understand, I don't even know if the bad guys have similar conversations in this one. There were also many TV shows in the first two MP's, they were sort of parodies of real shows such as Twin Peaks. You could stop to "watch" them and they were all really funny. But in this one, the only thing providing humour is Max Payne and his pessimistic attitude towards everything.

I also missed the graphic novel styled "cutscenes" from the earlier games. It's not really a big deal that they replaced those with regular cutscenes, but why they chose a chimpanzee to direct them is beyond me. Seriously, those cutscenes are fuckugly and trying real hard to ruin the rest of the game.

Okay, enough of my fanboyish ranting. This game does have a lot of good things. The action is bloody and fun. The story isn't that interesting, but at least the dialogue is really good, like in most of the games by Rockstar. The soundtrack is great, especially the song playing during the Panama canal mission, it reminded me of the Michael Mann film Manhunter and it gave me chills. Also, James McCaffrey gives an amazing performance, the perfect mixture of angry and tired.

But in the end, hopeless romantic as I am, I like to think that the Max Payne story ends with the alternate ending of Max Payne 2 you get by beating the game on the hardest difficulty, in which Mona Sax survives. But I don't mind that they made a third one, because even though Max Payne 3 doesn't really add anything new to the series, it doesn't take anything from it either.

Half-Life - PC Games
7.12.

The first one in the series and the last one I played. Well, better late than never.

And like the sequels, Half-Life is also a good game. There isn't much of a story, but at least an interesting beginning for one. The gameplay is very basic by today's standards, but you do get a nice variety of weapons to kill many different kinds of enemies, which is something that many shooters don't seem to have these days.

They could've use more than three voice actors though.

Heavy Rain - Move Edition - PlayStation 3

*** - ***½

Second playthrough. Liked it a bit better, even though I don't really have anything to add to my old comment. Except, there is one thing: the end credits are stupid. It's just some random scenes, some happened in my playthrough, some didn't, and the music completely ruins the atmosphere my ending(s) had.

28.1.

It's okay. Kinda like watching an average serial killer film, but since you get to participate in the story it's a bit more fun. I'm not too keen on changing diapers and making scrambled eggs, but the fighting is exciting and I was quite happy with the ending I got (and therefore not really interested in playing it again).

Played with the regular controller.

Mirror's Edge - PlayStation 3
28.9.

Maybe 4 and a half stars out of 5 is a bit too much, but even though the gameplay is repetitive as fuck and the story is basic and unsurprising, I enjoyed every minute.

And that's because I'm a fan of foot chases in films and this game is pretty much a one big foot chase. And when done in an absolutely beautiful environment with a cool soundtrack, it's just awesome. I mean, seeing this while hearing this makes me wanna cry like a bitch for the beauty of life.

Also, I just love the fact that a game this action-packed can be beaten without killing or shooting anyone (excluding the so called final boss, who really doesn't leave you much of a choice).

Resident Evil 2 - PlayStation
16.9.

There are four different scenarios, but I completed only Leon A and Claire B, because Claire B is fucking stupid. Sure, it enlightens some things, but mainly it's just Leon A all over again. The same puzzles, pretty much the same enemies and even the same jump scares. Felt pretty pointless to play the whole game all over again. And there are two more!

But I liked Leon A a lot. The puzzles aren't very hard, but it's still pretty rewarding to find a key or a red jewel that you've been looking for two hours. The inventory system is horrible and forces you to run back and forth way too much, just because you didn't know you were gonna need a fucking valve to open a path for you. But at least the level design is good and there's a nice variety of enemies and weapons so it's not just shooting zombies with a handgun in boring looking hallways.

It's fun to kill gods and their minions, but the main character is really, really annoying. All he does is bitch, bitch and bitch. And kill. Everyone he sees. He really doesn't have to, but he does it. And you're supposed to like him, you're supposed to like a total psychopath, who does nothing but complain.

"Kratos mad! Kratos rip head off! Revenge aargh!" said Kratos, since those were the only words he knew.

Senseless murder is rarely this much fun. You barge into a room and start killing people by bashing their heads in with a baseball bat, slicing them up with a katana and blowing their brains out with a shotgun while 80's style synthesizer pop plays in the background.

This game has an atmosphere that is both cool and disturbing, which is great. It's just too bad that this sort of lynchian atmosphere starts to wear thin fast. Sure, senseless murder is a lot of fun, but in the end, that's it. There's no story, just an excuse for killing. And regardless of the many ways you kill, there's not enough here to keep me interested for another playthrough.

Uncharted 2 is a masterpiece, but somehow Naughty Dog was able to top that. Of course this is not as big an improvement as Among Thieves was from Drake's Fortune, but in this everything is polished to absolute perfection.

I was bored at school one day and decided to try out this game. I forced a friend to play it with me, because I knew it would be too scary for me to play alone. And it is too scary for me to play alone, but it also feels a bit cheap and reminds me of those annoying as hell screamer videos.

EDIT. 28.6.2013

I always thought that I hadn't finished this, because I died when the monster or whatever came, but someone told me that that's it. So I guess I should consider it beaten.

What a lame game.

****½ - **½

It had been 3 or 4 years since I last played this game so I wanted to refresh my memories and see if I'd still like it.

Well, I don't. Not much at least. The biggest problem was that I remembered how to solve every puzzle, so there was no challenge. It was more like watching a walkthrough video on YouTube. And without the puzzles, it's just a pretty boring horror story.

Looking forward to playing the sequels again though, because I don't remember them too well.

Much better than the first one. They found the balance between the shooting, the climbing and the puzzles and everything is just better in every way.

The story is still pretty simple and predictable, but not necessarily in a bad way. It actually gives it a kind of a nostalgic feeling, like watching an Indiana Jones film.

One of the most fun games I've played. The story isn't something we haven't seen, but it makes up for it by avoiding the worst clichés and by giving us lots of funny dialogue. The gameplay isn't anything groundbreaking either, but it's solid and very enjoyable. And the Japanese actually speak Japanese to each other.

Oh maan, was this a disappointment. Metal Gear Solid is freakin' awesome, so I figured this would be too. But after the first mission as Snake, which is cool, a new main character is introduced. I had heard that you don't get to play as Snake much, but I didn't think the replacing character would be so damn annoying. I mean, his voice, his lines and his hair just make wanna strangle him. And those talks with his girlfriend - BOORIING!

I could live with a main character I don't like, but the rest of the game isn't that impressive either. The level design is rather dull, everything inside is gray and everything outside is this sort of brownish-orangish color. And you have to run back-and-forth in the same places all the time, which makes this game feel like such a task. Even the story isn't very interesting and I just find myself asking: "What the fuck is going on?", "Why the fuck is that guy alive?" and "Why is that lame vampire dude running on water?" (although some of my questions probably would be answered if I would care to play a bit further). The controls and the gameplay don't differ very much from the predecessor, which isn't a pro or a con.

I will give this a second chance someday though, maybe next year. Now, I don't think I can fairly judge this game, since all I can think about is "Oh maan, what a disappointment."

I haven't played a lot of Skyrim, but I've liked it so far. It's just feels too big for me, like it would take forever for me to beat (which is silly since I've easily spent more than 600 hours playing Mass Effect).

I played this for about 3 or 4 hours last year and just stopped, even though I didn't think it was bad. Now, the same thing, except I played for something like 20 hours. But suddenly I just completely lost interest and stopped playing. It's kinda weird that I can't get into this one, since it's from Bioware and I love Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and the Mass Effect trilogy. Maybe the reason is that it's fantasy and not science fiction, I don't know.

I can see how one can view Tomb Raider as "frustrating" if they didn't grow up with it... especially when it comes to the controls. However since it was my first 3D platformer I'm so use to it nothing within it bothers me and I can actually beat the entire thing without using a Medipack. I impose that restriction on myself when replaying it to make it challenging.

However, I do find a point of conflict with what you say about Tomb Raider and Metal Gear Solid combined. I do view Tomb Raider through a pair of rose tinted goggles... but I feel Metal Gear Solid has aged much more poorly - gameplay wise. The controls in that game feel insanely clunky to me, not to mention the fact they are very touchy when it comes to doing certain actions. I don't really have that problem w/Raider. Honestly I think the best part of Solid is the story which is more than enough to put up with that. Still, Solid is home to a lot of archaic issues... the invertory system is a pain to put up with in certain rooms like the gas filed chambers where you have to juggle keycards, the gas mask and chaff grenades to deal with the automated turrets. Also, as great as the boss battles are I wish there was more gameplay between them.

Additionally, I haven't finished Silent Hill either... but I did like what I managed to play. It's a very different in atmosphere than Resident Evil.

Also, what is it about Finland... like all of my favorite bands ARE from there. Hell, listening to Sonata Arctica right now...

Actually, I did grow up playing Tomb Raider, since it's the first game I've ever played (Tomb Raider or Commander Keen 4, I'm not sure), though I owned it for PC, not Playstation. But the problem is that I've always considered it frustrating. Not only because the controls are stiff as hell, but the game also has a nasty habit of killing you when you least expect it. I know that's probably a good thing, if you like a game that keeps you on your toes, but I hate playing a game where you have to be extra extra careful all the damn time. At least on PC you could save whenever you wanted, but on Playstation there are checkpoints, so when I play it, the only thing I can think about is "When is the next checkpoint, when is the next checkpoint?"

And I disagree that Metal Gear Solid has aged poorly, I have no problem with its gameplay. Sure the inventory system could be better, but I think it's kinda nitpicking to complain about such a small thing. And like you said, it has great boss battles and a good story too.

I would also have some bad things to say about Sonata Arctica, but let's not go there.

But anyway, thank you very much for the comment, I like how you kinda forced me to explain my ratings.
Posted: 4 years, 1 month ago at Jun 30 2:35
Thanks for shedding some light on your thoughts about Tomb Raider... however, when you say the game has a nasty habit of killing you when you least expect it I don't really get that feeling from the first game. I DO get that feeling from the THIRD game where EVERYTHING IS out to kill you. If you dislike the first game because of that vibe the third game would be a nightmare for you. I generally steer clear of that one myself....
