An obvious choice, but Final Fantasy VII is quite possibly the peak of gaming history. No list of games would be right without this masterpiece within its top 5 at least, if not top 1! The first game I ever played in the series, and still the best.
RB6K's rating:
I played this beauty after final fantasy nine, I was used to what was considered "superior graphics" and was concerned about the step down from PS1 to Super Nintendo quality. Fortunately for me the quality of graphics is overshadowed with the incredible storyline and impeccable characters that live within this world. I adored this game wholeheartedly and played it until I had perfected as much as possible within it as I could not get enough. A definite must to all Final Fantasy fans, its not all about stunning beauty and pushing your consoles limits, this is old school, and the reason we have such magnificent games since.
RB6K's rating:
Coming a few years after Final Fantasy VII, this game had a lot to live up to. Expectations were overflowing in anticipation of its release, and when it came out it was met with a few shocks due to its very different style.
In its time it looked amazing, a massive achievement creating such wonderful cut scenes, and a superior world to FFVII. The story is brilliant, more serious and adult. This was a break away from the "cute" animated characters, or cartoon like figures fans were used to. Like a fine wine, this game has gotten better with age. I still sometimes play this game and am in awe of its superiority over pretty much all other media in existence. RB6K's rating:
The most recent Playstation installation of Final Fantasy takes things to a whole new plane of existence. The world is epic, the characters more human looking than ever, the very bleeding edge of software technology went into making this game what it is. The story is a grand tale of empires at war, there are large scale battles and magnificent ships. Everything about this Final Fantasy is huge, and it not only met my expectations but destroyed them.
RB6K's rating:
An odd choice for 5th place on the list, but Final Fantasy Tactics was a game I thoroughly enjoyed. I played this on the DS (I will need to change that around at some point!) and it consumed such large proportions of my day, I often had to resort to playing the game near a plug socket so my DS would not need re charging and I could play on longer!
This game differs from the normal FF style, in that everything about it is tactical. You get to choose where on the map you want to place towns, which route to take to get to each one, which missions you will do, who you let join your clan etc. This is definitely the most customizable Final Fantasy of all, and it gave me great pleasure being able to tweak it to my preferences. The storyline was not exactly huge, but all the mini missions meant you could build your own story. RB6K's rating:
The last installment on the Playstation, this game was more of a summary of all the previous installments, and a Final farewell from the cute animation, and youthful story. The characters in this game were all great, the graphics and cut scenes managed to excel beyond what Final Fantasy VIII had provided, and it was a very enjoyable game. There are one or two things in the story which create negatives, but they are things I can live with, and I feel it belongs above the rest of the games in this list because of how enjoyable and re playable it really is.
RB6K's rating:
The first PS2 Final Fantasy, it shocked me how advanced and brilliant this game felt at the time of release. I was in awe of how big and well made everything was. There was plenty to do in this game, which kept me busy for hours. It proved to be one of the most difficult games of the series, to date i have still never 100% completed it.
RB6K's rating:
The first ever Final Fantasy Sequel. A lot of people I know despise this installment, and I can see why. I personally enjoyed it, there was again a new take on the series, giving you a % score of how far through the game you were, and how much of it you had completed. Again I have never achieved 100% but I did manage to get it high enough to feel satisfied I could not really gain much more storyline. I recommend fans of Final Fantasy X play this for the story completion value at least, but I do feel all FF fans would enjoy it.
RB6K's rating:
It was very interesting to play these older versions of Final Fantasy, recapping on the history of the game helped me to see the origins of the series and understand many of the homages paid in the future installments. These games do look old and weary but the life in them shows exactly why Final Fantasy has become such a massive phenomenon.
RB6K's rating:
Same as Anthology, a brilliant trip into the past of Final Fantasy.
RB6K's rating:
Another Final Fantasy sequel, this time its Vincent from Final Fantasy VII getting his own game. An extra, secret character in FFVII, he takes center stage here, on a mission to uncover a conspiracy in motion. I never finished this game, more through lack of time, than lack of wish. Perhaps one day I shall, and it will go higher on my list.
RB6K's rating:
I got this in a swap with a work colleague, its exactly the same game as the one found in Anthologies, however with the obvious added portability which made me want it. Great game, and great characters.
RB6K's rating:
As with FFIV Advance, i bought this so i could have some portable RPG's to fill the voids during long journeys. I wasn't too impressed with this though as they barely addressed any of the issues in the old game, only the graphics. I felt a little lost as to what i needed to do in the game, and eventually stopped playing.
RB6K's rating:
I put this on here, not because I have seen it in UMD form, but because i felt I wanted to put it low on my list because it was a shocking insult to the name of Final Fantasy! I saw this at the cinema, expecting it to instantly become my all time favorite film, of course I left distraught and disgusted. I await the day my expectations are resurrected.
RB6K's rating:
Worst Final Fantasy ever, enough said really. I cant believe this game is even considered a Final Fantasy. I bought it, and returned it, in the same weekend!
RB6K's rating:
I recently got this for my birthday, which is in a few weeks. So I have not played it yet, but thought I should add it to the list ready to be moved upwards when the time comes. I have reasonable expectations, it wont be in the top 7 but I hope top 10 at least!
