Film Log for 2012
I watched this back when I wasn't really into cinema, just out of curiosity. The utter surrealism and down right fucked up nature of it really blew me away
m08221196's rating:
For some reason, I got really obsessed with samurais one day and decided to watch some Kurosawa movies. I was blown away
m08221196's rating:
I watched this one the next day. It was great
m08221196's rating:
A surrealistic masterpiece I watched out of curiosity... AGAIN
The most painfully accurate portrayal of isolation, believe me, I know m08221196's rating:
Watched this in an attempt to get into anime. Hated it at first, but grew to love it. The animation could be better, though
m08221196's rating:
This was the first sign of my revived interest in cinema. A fantastic and thrilling film with an excellent plot, as well as one of the greatest fight scene in a film ever
m08221196's rating:
My love for "Oldboy" inspired me to go here. Great film, will always live in the shadow of "Oldboy", but certainly very worthy in it's own right
m08221196's rating:
I detested this when I first saw it, but repeated viewings proved how wrong I was. "Dumbland", more or less, changed my life
m08221196's rating:
My best friend Zaire got really into this and said I should watch it. I liked it a lot, tons of fun
m08221196's rating:
After I saw screenshot of the Professor Pluggy character, I just had to watch this. Sans "Dumbland", I don't think a film has ever challenged me quite as much. If you think "Fight Club" is a "mindfuck" film, you're gonna want to slowly back away from this and make no sudden movements
m08221196's rating:
Watched this on the last day of Spring Break, fell in love with it and became obsessed with Ghibli for a while
m08221196's rating:
My second Ghibli movie, and a film also loved. Really great characters and just a fun movie to watch
m08221196's rating:
Watched this on a particularly shitty day, hated it and wrote a silly review, watched it again on a better day, punched myself for writing that review
m08221196's rating:
A bit lightweight compared to some other Ghibli films, but a really lovable film
m08221196's rating:
This would probably also fit into the "lightweight" category, but I really connected with the main character and, for a while, considered this my favorite Ghibli film
m08221196's rating:
All things considered, the ultimate Ghibli masterpiece. Never before had a movie honestly brought me to tears
m08221196's rating:
The greatest movie I've ever seen. To even call a work of art this utterly wonderful a "movie" is degrading it; a movie is trash like "The Dark Knight", this is art
m08221196's rating:
Unbeleiveably fucked up and weird; the kind of thing I aspire to make
m08221196's rating:
"I don't like spinach and I'm glad I don't, because if I did, I'd eat it and I can't stand it"
oh, and it also has the greatest ending to a movie ever m08221196's rating:
Weird Japanese horror comedy, with some of the most offbeat directing I've ever seen
m08221196's rating:
Fuck "Inception", this is the REAL "dream within a dream" movie
m08221196's rating:
My first experience with Bergman; loved it
Even though I'm only 15, I still really connected with the main character m08221196's rating:
I watched this simply because of the title ("Film"; so brilliantly simplistic), but imagine my joy when I find out it's a disturbing surrealistic satirization of silent films
m08221196's rating:
One of the few times a film as an allegory works in it's favor as opposed to just plain insulting the intelligence of the viewer. Also, was I the only one who noticed just how good humored this film was?
Fucking perfect m08221196's rating:
If you disagree with this rating, I will fight you
m08221196's rating:
The woman who played Joan of Arc gave what may very well be the greatest performance in all of film. Top three, at least
m08221196's rating:
Brilliantly directed and quite a singular viewing experience, but it's just not enjoyable to watch. Believe me, I'm totally fine with, nay, vastly prefer films as a medium of art rather than entertainment, but I need to feel something beyond "this is really well made and unique" when I watch a movie
m08221196's rating:
What happened to films like this, where they made huge statements, not just some watered down "Avatar"esque crap. I'll tell you; nothing, they seldom ever got made, but when they did it was great
m08221196's rating:
Pretty good surrealism (with boobs!!!!!!!!)
the music that soundtracks it is better than the movie itself m08221196's rating:
I wrote a really good review of this. No really, I know my reviews tend to be awful, but this one was actually really good. Go read it
m08221196's rating:
Anybody who thinks "Funny Games" is a horror movie is an idiot. It's a brutally dark and stomach-churning psychological thriller (yes, there is a difference), and the best of it's kind. Not at one part was my stomach at ease during this
m08221196's rating:
Brilliant plot, the non sequential structure worked perfectly, the levels of poignancy are occasionally too high, and, most impressive, Jim Carrey, the man who, only a few years earlier was making a living literally talking out if his ass, plays a sympathetic character believably
m08221196's rating:
"Kill a man and you're a murderer. Kill millions and you're a conquerer. Kill them all and you're god"
Fuck, I love Godard m08221196's rating:
I love films like this, where they explore a person's descent into madness
and the Indian music throughout was fantastic m08221196's rating:
There are no words
m08221196's rating:
A bit tedious in places, but still a very original and enjoyable slice of slapstick
m08221196's rating:
What a fantastic way to start off my journey into that huge fucking watchlist.
"Slacker" is a film that, in the wrong hands, could have gone horribly wrong. The film focuses on a huge cast of characters, all jaded and disconnected with the world around them. If Linklater focused on each character too closely, the film would have come across very similar to "The Royal Tenebaums"; a film so caught up in creating "quirky" or different characters that it loses all sight of making a good finished produected. But rather, Linklater lets these characters serve as vehicles for ideas and feelings that real people may actually have. Not every story works like that "Deazed and Confused"-esque stoner trying to take those girls to some music show or those two gearheads who, rather than talk about why they love cars, just talk about cars themselves, and some stories, like the old man with the tape recorder or "Madonna papsmear" girl featured on the poster, could have had longer stories, but, taken as a whole, "Slacker" is a truly visonary and one of a kind film that shows how creativity will trump money any day m08221196's rating:
Orson Welles is fucking with our heads and loving every minute of it, and I have to say I love his brilliant trickery as well
m08221196's rating:
Almost too human
If you feel nothing during this movie, you are dead m08221196's rating:
As far as cinematography goes, you'd be hard pressed to find a better film
m08221196's rating:
Pulp Fiction + Gummo= Mulholland Drive?
m08221196's rating:
Damn, and I thought "Throne of Blood" did a good job of showng a castle falling. Well, it still totally did, but this one does an even better job, a statement I don't say lightly
m08221196's rating:
The endng scene, where the murder is put on trial, is my new favorite scene in a film
m08221196's rating:
Just fucking incredible in every sense of the word. I know that isn't a very descriptive way of putting it, but there simply is no way to describe it.

Bresson is less popular than Bergman because as Tarkovsky says Au Hasard Balthazar is Bresson's greatest masterpiece; Tarkovsky's favorite is Diary of a Country Priest.
