1. El Topo (1970)
I watched this back when I wasn't really into cinema, just out of curiosity. The utter surrealism and down right fucked up nature of it really blew me away

People who added this item 912  Average listal rating (535 ratings) 8.4  IMDB Rating 8.4
2. Rashomon (1950)
For some reason, I got really obsessed with samurais one day and decided to watch some Kurosawa movies. I was blown away
m08221196's rating:

People who added this item 354  Average listal rating (209 ratings) 8.3  IMDB Rating 8.1
3. Throne of Blood (1957)
I watched this one the next day. It was great
m08221196's rating:

People who added this item 60  Average listal rating (21 ratings) 7.7  IMDB Rating 7.7
4. The Man Who Sleeps (1974)
A surrealistic masterpiece I watched out of curiosity... AGAIN

The most painfully accurate portrayal of isolation, believe me, I know
m08221196's rating:

People who added this item 197  Average listal rating (120 ratings) 7.6  IMDB Rating 8.2
5. Fooly Cooly (2001)
Watched this in an attempt to get into anime. Hated it at first, but grew to love it. The animation could be better, though
m08221196's rating:

People who added this item 2343  Average listal rating (1472 ratings) 8.2  IMDB Rating 8.4
6. Oldboy (2003)
This was the first sign of my revived interest in cinema. A fantastic and thrilling film with an excellent plot, as well as one of the greatest fight scene in a film ever
m08221196's rating:

People who added this item 658  Average listal rating (378 ratings) 7.7  IMDB Rating 7.7
7. Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance (2002)
My love for "Oldboy" inspired me to go here. Great film, will always live in the shadow of "Oldboy", but certainly very worthy in it's own right
m08221196's rating:

People who added this item 67  Average listal rating (37 ratings) 6.9  IMDB Rating 6.3
8. DumbLand (2002)
I detested this when I first saw it, but repeated viewings proved how wrong I was. "Dumbland", more or less, changed my life
m08221196's rating:

People who added this item 1290  Average listal rating (783 ratings) 7.8  IMDB Rating
9. Akira (1988)
My best friend Zaire got really into this and said I should watch it. I liked it a lot, tons of fun
m08221196's rating:

People who added this item 40  Average listal rating (17 ratings) 5.6  IMDB Rating 5.5
10. King Lear (1987)
After I saw screenshot of the Professor Pluggy character, I just had to watch this. Sans "Dumbland", I don't think a film has ever challenged me quite as much. If you think "Fight Club" is a "mindfuck" film, you're gonna want to slowly back away from this and make no sudden movements
m08221196's rating:

People who added this item 3423  Average listal rating (2200 ratings) 8.4  IMDB Rating 8.6
11. Spirited Away (2001)
Watched this on the last day of Spring Break, fell in love with it and became obsessed with Ghibli for a while
m08221196's rating:

People who added this item 815  Average listal rating (440 ratings) 7.6  IMDB Rating 7.7
12. Porco Rosso (1992)
My second Ghibli movie, and a film also loved. Really great characters and just a fun movie to watch
m08221196's rating:

People who added this item 2108  Average listal rating (1279 ratings) 8.2  IMDB Rating 8.4
13. Princess Mononoke (1997)
Watched this on a particularly shitty day, hated it and wrote a silly review, watched it again on a better day, punched myself for writing that review
m08221196's rating:

People who added this item 1871  Average listal rating (1123 ratings) 8.3  IMDB Rating 8.2
14. My Neighbour Totoro (1988)
A bit lightweight compared to some other Ghibli films, but a really lovable film
m08221196's rating:

People who added this item 544  Average listal rating (252 ratings) 7.9  IMDB Rating 7.9
15. Whisper of the Heart (1995)
This would probably also fit into the "lightweight" category, but I really connected with the main character and, for a while, considered this my favorite Ghibli film
m08221196's rating:

People who added this item 1302  Average listal rating (717 ratings) 8.2  IMDB Rating 8.4
16. Grave of the Fireflies (1988)
All things considered, the ultimate Ghibli masterpiece. Never before had a movie honestly brought me to tears
m08221196's rating:

People who added this item 230  Average listal rating (99 ratings) 7.4  IMDB Rating 7.6
17. Only Yesterday (1991)
A nice little coming of age story
m08221196's rating:

People who added this item 1225  Average listal rating (680 ratings) 7.7  IMDB Rating 7.8
18. Kiki's Delivery Service (1989)
ditto
m08221196's rating:

People who added this item 42  Average listal rating (4 ratings) 6.8  IMDB Rating 7.7
19. As I Was Moving Ahead Occasionally I Saw Bri... (2000)
The greatest movie I've ever seen. To even call a work of art this utterly wonderful a "movie" is degrading it; a movie is trash like "The Dark Knight", this is art
m08221196's rating:

People who added this item 573  Average listal rating (280 ratings) 6.9  IMDB Rating 6.2
20. Gummo (1997)
Unbeleiveably fucked up and weird; the kind of thing I aspire to make
m08221196's rating:

People who added this item 602  Average listal rating (292 ratings) 8  IMDB Rating 7.6
21. Pierrot le Fou (1965)
"I don't like spinach and I'm glad I don't, because if I did, I'd eat it and I can't stand it"

oh, and it also has the greatest ending to a movie ever
m08221196's rating:

People who added this item 270  Average listal rating (144 ratings) 7.8  IMDB Rating 7.2
22. House (1977)
Weird Japanese horror comedy, with some of the most offbeat directing I've ever seen
m08221196's rating:

People who added this item 511  Average listal rating (248 ratings) 8.1  IMDB Rating 7.9
23. The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie (1972)
Fuck "Inception", this is the REAL "dream within a dream" movie
m08221196's rating:

People who added this item 784  Average listal rating (424 ratings) 8.4  IMDB Rating 8.3
24. Wild Strawberries (1957)
My first experience with Bergman; loved it

Even though I'm only 15, I still really connected with the main character
m08221196's rating:

People who added this item 32  Average listal rating (19 ratings) 7.6  IMDB Rating 7.4
25. Film (1965)
I watched this simply because of the title ("Film"; so brilliantly simplistic), but imagine my joy when I find out it's a disturbing surrealistic satirization of silent films
m08221196's rating:

People who added this item 315  Average listal rating (161 ratings) 8.9  IMDB Rating 8.4
26. Harakiri (1962)
Holy shit, the end fight scene
m08221196's rating:

People who added this item 37  Average listal rating (26 ratings) 6.8  IMDB Rating 7.4
27. Ghosts Before Breakfast (1928)
Flying hats
m08221196's rating:

People who added this item 1181  Average listal rating (689 ratings) 8.4  IMDB Rating 8.3
28. The Seventh Seal (1957)
One of the few times a film as an allegory works in it's favor as opposed to just plain insulting the intelligence of the viewer. Also, was I the only one who noticed just how good humored this film was?

Fucking perfect
m08221196's rating:

People who added this item 1110  Average listal rating (529 ratings) 8.3  IMDB Rating 8.1
29. 8 1/2 (1963)
If you disagree with this rating, I will fight you
m08221196's rating:

People who added this item 482  Average listal rating (240 ratings) 8.8  IMDB Rating 8.1
30. The Passion of Joan of Arc (1928)
The woman who played Joan of Arc gave what may very well be the greatest performance in all of film. Top three, at least
m08221196's rating:

People who added this item 109  Average listal rating (35 ratings) 8.2  IMDB Rating 7.7
31. Jeanne Dielman, 23 Quai du Commerce, 1080 Br... (1975)
Brilliantly directed and quite a singular viewing experience, but it's just not enjoyable to watch. Believe me, I'm totally fine with, nay, vastly prefer films as a medium of art rather than entertainment, but I need to feel something beyond "this is really well made and unique" when I watch a movie
m08221196's rating:

People who added this item 819  Average listal rating (414 ratings) 8.2  IMDB Rating
32. Solaris (1972)
What happened to films like this, where they made huge statements, not just some watered down "Avatar"esque crap. I'll tell you; nothing, they seldom ever got made, but when they did it was great
m08221196's rating:

People who added this item 6  Average listal rating (4 ratings) 8  IMDB Rating 7.4
33. Not I (1973)
Fucking creepy
m08221196's rating:

People who added this item 36  Average listal rating (26 ratings) 6.3  IMDB Rating 6.5
34. Return to Reason (1923)
Pretty good surrealism (with boobs!!!!!!!!)

the music that soundtracks it is better than the movie itself
m08221196's rating:

People who added this item 543  Average listal rating (282 ratings) 7.5  IMDB Rating 7.1
35. Enter the Void (2009)
I wrote a really good review of this. No really, I know my reviews tend to be awful, but this one was actually really good. Go read it
m08221196's rating:

People who added this item 982  Average listal rating (530 ratings) 7.7  IMDB Rating 7.6
36. Funny Games (1997)
Anybody who thinks "Funny Games" is a horror movie is an idiot. It's a brutally dark and stomach-churning psychological thriller (yes, there is a difference), and the best of it's kind. Not at one part was my stomach at ease during this
m08221196's rating:

People who added this item 5442  Average listal rating (3623 ratings) 8  IMDB Rating 8.4
37. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)
Brilliant plot, the non sequential structure worked perfectly, the levels of poignancy are occasionally too high, and, most impressive, Jim Carrey, the man who, only a few years earlier was making a living literally talking out if his ass, plays a sympathetic character believably
m08221196's rating:

People who added this item 251  Average listal rating (112 ratings) 7.5  IMDB Rating 7.5
38. Masculin Feminin (aka Masculine Feminine) (1966)
"Kill a man and you're a murderer. Kill millions and you're a conquerer. Kill them all and you're god"

Fuck, I love Godard
m08221196's rating:

People who added this item 85  Average listal rating (37 ratings) 8.2  IMDB Rating 7.8
39. The Music Room (1958)
I love films like this, where they explore a person's descent into madness

and the Indian music throughout was fantastic
m08221196's rating:

People who added this item 253  Average listal rating (141 ratings) 7.9  IMDB Rating 7.9
40. Neon Genesis Evangelion: The End of Evangeli... (1997)
There are no words
m08221196's rating:

People who added this item 262  Average listal rating (156 ratings) 8  IMDB Rating 7.7
41. Mon Oncle (1958)
A bit tedious in places, but still a very original and enjoyable slice of slapstick
m08221196's rating:

People who added this item 220  Average listal rating (99 ratings) 7.2  IMDB Rating 6.9
42. Slacker (1991)
What a fantastic way to start off my journey into that huge fucking watchlist.

"Slacker" is a film that, in the wrong hands, could have gone horribly wrong. The film focuses on a huge cast of characters, all jaded and disconnected with the world around them. If Linklater focused on each character too closely, the film would have come across very similar to "The Royal Tenebaums"; a film so caught up in creating "quirky" or different characters that it loses all sight of making a good finished produected. But rather, Linklater lets these characters serve as vehicles for ideas and feelings that real people may actually have. Not every story works like that "Deazed and Confused"-esque stoner trying to take those girls to some music show or those two gearheads who, rather than talk about why they love cars, just talk about cars themselves, and some stories, like the old man with the tape recorder or "Madonna papsmear" girl featured on the poster, could have had longer stories, but, taken as a whole, "Slacker" is a truly visonary and one of a kind film that shows how creativity will trump money any day
m08221196's rating:

People who added this item 187  Average listal rating (102 ratings) 7.6  IMDB Rating 7.7
43. F for Fake (1973)
Orson Welles is fucking with our heads and loving every minute of it, and I have to say I love his brilliant trickery as well
m08221196's rating:

People who added this item 869  Average listal rating (516 ratings) 8.4  IMDB Rating 8.4
44. Bicycle Thieves (1948)
Almost too human

If you feel nothing during this movie, you are dead
m08221196's rating:

People who added this item 606  Average listal rating (361 ratings) 8.3  IMDB Rating
45. Aguirre: The Wrath of God (1972)
As far as cinematography goes, you'd be hard pressed to find a better film
m08221196's rating:

People who added this item 921  Average listal rating (443 ratings) 8.5  IMDB Rating 8.1
46. Stalker (1979)
No wait, THIS is the greatest film ever
m08221196's rating:

People who added this item 2475  Average listal rating (1445 ratings) 7.8  IMDB Rating 7.9
47. Mulholland Drive (2001)
Pulp Fiction + Gummo= Mulholland Drive?
m08221196's rating:

People who added this item 779  Average listal rating (404 ratings) 8.2  IMDB Rating 8.3
48. Ran (1985)
Damn, and I thought "Throne of Blood" did a good job of showng a castle falling. Well, it still totally did, but this one does an even better job, a statement I don't say lightly
m08221196's rating:

People who added this item 1105  Average listal rating (568 ratings) 8.6  IMDB Rating 8.5
49. M (1931)
The endng scene, where the murder is put on trial, is my new favorite scene in a film
m08221196's rating:

People who added this item 421  Average listal rating (188 ratings) 8.7  IMDB Rating 8.1
50. Andrei Rublev (1966)
Just fucking incredible in every sense of the word. I know that isn't a very descriptive way of putting it, but there simply is no way to describe it.
m08221196's rating:

The year of exploration!!!!!

When Andrei Tarkosvky's film Stalker was criticized for its slow pace, he said
I am only interested in the views of two people: one is called Bresson and one called Bergman.

Bresson is less popular than Bergman because as Tarkovsky says
Bresson is perhaps the only man in the cinema to have achieved the perfect fusion of the finished work with a concept theoretically formulated beforehand. I know of no other artist as consistent as he is in this respect. His guiding principle was the elimination of what is known as expressiveness, in the sense that he wanted to do away with the frontier between the image and actual life; that is, to render life itself graphic and expressive. No special feeding in of material, nothing laboured, nothing that smacks of deliberate generalisation.
Au Hasard Balthazar is Bresson's greatest masterpiece; Tarkovsky's favorite is Diary of a Country Priest.

I suggest The White Ribbon by Michael Haneke (he directed Funny Games and The Seventh Continent).

Godard told Jonathan Rosenbaum Alphaville's references to German cinema were made unconsciously. He was influenced by the German Expressionist films The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, The Last Laugh, and Nosferatu, all films worth seeing if you haven't already.
