One of the most legendary character ever to have graced this planet. Ice cold, intelligent and super capable, the nano-augmented agent has provided countless hours of laughs and admiration.

Gamings most famous mute. The doctor of advanced physics-turned iconic rebel and saviour of humanity from the alien hordes is one of the most legendary characters I can think of, despite never uttering a word.

Character: Max Payne

I really think the top three characters in this list are tied. Max is someone who has had his life continually destroyed over and over again and it's just beautiful. He still maintains his cool, the ultimate noir detective.

Character: Cloud Strife

The poor guy has a lot of issues going on in his head, but he was a solid protagonist in a great game. His look, his attitude and his massive sword struck an instant chord with me in my young days.

Character: Squall Leonheart

Squall starts of as an intolerable bag of emotions but eventually comes out of his shell and turns into a much more likeable guy. He's intelligent and most importantly, he's capable of some serious beatdowns - and that's the most important attribute for a fictional hero.

A quote: "No matter what happens, even if you become the world's enemy, I'll be your knight."

Character: Solid Snake

Despite the fact that he is a master of subterfuge and a highly trained killer, Snake is still an international hero. Everyone knows of him, everyone loves him and most importantly, everyone wants to be him. Just imagine having that voice!

Character: Carl 'C.J' Johnson

The classic rise from street bum to criminal overlord in a grand theft auto game is made all the more funny when you have a classic protagonist who comes out with thousands of one-liners at the drop of a hat.

Character: Wander

A mysterious hero driven only by his desire to resurrect his lover, whatever the cost to his health. A gifted horseman and conqueror of even the most insurmountable of beasts.

Nobody forms a vigilante cop gang and cleans up the 32-bit street like Axel and his buddies. Sporting a fetching bandanna and skin tight white-tee, you better stay at home tonight if you're criminal scum!

Character: Leon Kennedy

He doesn't have arteries and veins, he has 'protect' and 'serve'! Seemingly oblivious to the undead goings on in town until he gets right into the middle of it! That doesn't stop him though. Anything to impress on his first day!

Before I was old enough to know any better I was very much content with silent blue hedgehogs who could only run fast and jump on things as my lifestyle icons. Those were the days! Before Sonic was a cocky juvenile runt.

Character: Ryu

The ultimate in silent chic. Ryu is an unrivalled Kung Fu master, despite the fact that he has only mastered three special moves and a handful of kicks and punches. But what a bandanna!

Character: Lara Croft

Of course. The better graphics get these days, the better Lara looks and the more acceptable it is to fancy her. That's my story anyway. With her array of ridiculously agile gymnastics and unbelievable aerial feats, you can't help but be impressed with her. The fact that she is always inappropriately dressed and prone to spurts of extreme rage makes her all the more heroic.

Character: Nick 'Havoc' Parker

Everything that is WRONG with this diabolical game can be summed up by his abominable face on the front cover. Looking permanently constipated and sporting an expression that looks like it was forged with a pneumatic-shovel, Havoc undoubtedly failed to live up to his predecessor's namesake and broke many of my ribs on the way.
