1. The Castle (1997)
"Tell him he's dreamin'!!!"

"Mum said it was funny how one day you're not famous, and the next day you are. Famous. And then you're not again."

"It's the vibe of the thing, your Honour."

"If Dad is the backbone, Mum is the other bones. All of 'em."

This is the essential Aussie flick! Even if you're visiting Australia for a few weeks I will force you to watch it. It embodies all the qualities that make us truly Australian. This is the classic story of a typical family battling big business against all odds. It reminds us of the Aussie values and virtues we hold dear: mateship, beer, good sense of humour.

Funny, heart-warming, potent...just bloody brilliant!!!

"How's the serenity?"

"This is going straight to the pool room!"

"Dad reckons fishing is 10% brains and 95% muscle, the rest is just good luck."

2. Kenny (2006)
"There's a smell in here that will outlast religion!"

"I don't know what all the fuss is about, it's 80% water and we've got chemicals to take care of the remaining 20."

It took about 5 years to make...but the Jacobson Brothers have created one of the best Aussie films in existence. The quality of mateship is present, as well as a sort of Crocodile Dundee approach to every situation. The central characters are typically Australian and are a symbol of everything I love about my country. As Kenny is treated poorly by the public, he keeps his concentration despite the circumstances. This man is admirable and honourable.

I first saw this in the cinema and was laughing so hard that I saw it again immediately afterwards just to pick up the things I missed. Brilliant stuff! Kudos to the Jacobson Brothers!

"Australians all let us ring Joyce..."

"Mad as a Clown's cock!"

"There's another classic example of someone having a two inch arsehole and us having installed only one inch piping."

3. Gallipoli (1981)
"The thing I can't stand about you mate is you're always so bloody cheerful."

"Supposed to shoot the enemy, not bite them."

Peter Weir's classic war film is still remembered as not only one of the best Aussie films but also one of the best war films to date. When it comes to realism and the portrayal of Australian mateship in a dire situation, the film's success is so far unbeaten.

This film is harrowing and brilliant. You will never forget it! The final shot reminds the audience of the young men who risked their lives to go to war...and the consequences of their decisions. Their lives were bleak back home and signed on in search of excitement...what they discovered was their ill fate.

Jack: "How fast can you run?"
Archy Hamilton: "As fast as a leopard."
Jack: "How fast are you going to run?"
Archy Hamilton: "As fast as a leopard."

5. Bad Eggs (2003)
"Yep... I smell fuckwits."

"Fuck me rigid... he's fair up the clack!"

Tony Martin is a comedic genius. This is one of Australia's best comedians.

In the cast we have a horde of great names. This is Australia's best comedians all in one place. I was on the floor with laughter from start to finish. Very unconventional for an Aussie film as well!

"Anyone for Plum Jam?"

Julie Bale: "You here on your own?"
Ben Kinnear: "Yeah, my girlfriend's..."
Julie Bale: "Imaginary?"

6. Kokoda (2006)
"The Japanese are making their way up a narrow track at Kokoda, and will attack anyday now. They outnumber us 10 to 1"

Courage. Mateship. Endurance. Sacrifice. These four words are etched in stone at an Australian war memorial in Isurava, Papua New Guinea. These immortal words will be etched in your head after witnessing this harrowing Australian war film!

This is the Gallipoli of the 21st century. It's a harrowing film with powerful themes and true blue Aussie qualities. I was almost in tears at its power.

I watched this with my grandfather who was in the war. He was speechless when the credits rolled. He turned to me afterwards and said "That is the best war movie I have ever seen." Who am I to complain?

Dan: "Suppose it'd be inappropriate to ask for leave on the grounds of compassion at this late juncture?"
Sam: "What grounds would they be then?"
Dan: "On the grounds that I don't wanna get me head blown off."

"You gotta die here...all of us...we have to"

7. Rogue (2007)
"You'll be right. As long as you don't go in the water"

"I'm a travel writer for a magazine"

CRIKEY! What a croc movie!

This is the definitive crocodile experience. Atmospheric, scary and intense...and the special effects are astonishing considering the budget.

Steve Irwin would be proud!!! (R.I.P)

8. Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975)
Peter Weir's classic, eerie and atmospheric classic is still regarded as one of Australia's best films.

The film relies on eerie chills and its tense atmosphere to be scary, as opposed to modern horror or thriller movies.

9. Mad Max (1979)
With a criminally low budget of about $300,000, director George Miller single-handedly revolutionised action films. The car chases are intense and exciting...this is a director who excels at his profession!

Mad Max took the world by surprise. Even today it holds a convincing position among my favourite movies.

10. The Road Warrior (1981)
"My life fades. The vision dims. All that remains are memories. I remember a time of chaos. Ruined dreams. This wasted land. But most of all, I remember The Road Warrior."

After the massive success of Mad Max, the filmmakers were given a larger budget to make its sequel.

Mad Max 2 is every bit as brilliant as its predecessor, if not even better. The action is frequent and exciting with car chases that put Hollywood to shame.

"I'm just here for the gasoline."

"Two days ago, I saw a vehicle that would haul that tanker. You want to get out of here? You talk to me."

A benchmark in Aussie movies! This is a war drama still held in incredibly high regard by contemporary audiences.

The performances are especially outstanding!

13. Crocodile Dundee (1986)
This is classic Australian comedy! It's almost impossible for an Australian to dislike the movie.

Crocodile Dundee is frequently hilarious and boasts an outstanding cast. Paul Hogan as the central character is superb. His character is likable and light-hearted: always approaching a situation with a smile on his face. Love it!
