Top 20 anime

1. Clannad: After Story (2008)
Clannad After Story could change your life. In just five days, it changed mine. It made me look at life in a new way. Never in my life have I ever shed so many tears while watching a show or a movie in the theater or on TV. I shed tears of joy and tears of sorrow. This anime tugs at your heartstrings so hard, that it’s almost inhumane not to cry. Clannad: AS will rip your heart out and then mend it with sweet words of love and then rip it out again. Your face will fill with joy and in the next few minutes, all the color will be drained from it. During some scenes, I could almost feel my heart crumble inside my chest. That is not to say that this anime contains only sadness. Just when the show pushes you so hard into the well, it pulls you back up just as fast. This anime will take you on a journey like none other. And I can say, without a doubt in my mind that I enjoyed every second of it.

2. Naruto (2002)
If it wasn't for Naruto, I wouldn't be sitting here writing this list of favorite anime. I got dragged into a foreign ninja world, and has been there ever since, together with Sasuke, Sakura and all the others.

People who added this item 303  Average listal rating (173 ratings) 7.4  IMDB Rating 8.1
3. Naruto: Hurricane Chronicles (2007)
So what if it has plenty of fillers and occasionally dragged out episodes? The story is still as amazing as it's prequel, and the fights are on a higher level than most other shounen anime out there.
njasis's rating:

People who added this item 173  Average listal rating (92 ratings) 7.9  IMDB Rating 8.4
4. Berserk (1997)
Holy shit. This just completely blew me away and has left me hungry for continuation in the manga. As I sit here late at night, having just finished these disturbing yet fascinating last episodes, it comes to further realization that anime can be so much more than mere entertainment. Berserk has many elements of evilness, brutality and human suffering, yet it can be so beautiful with it's long dialogues about philosophical ideals and dreams...

Guess I just want to say that this really was a new experience for me in terms of depth to a story. So despite it's flaws, which there obviously are some of (animation), this series gets a high spot among my favorites.

5. Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion R2 (2008)
Brilliant, the sequel overcomes an already great first season. With a surprising twist even at the very last episode, Code Geass manages to engage completely from start to finish. You never know who trusts who, or what will happen next.
njasis's rating:

6. Gurren Lagann (2007)
"WHO THE HELL DO YOU THINK I AM?!" - Kamina

Only on the rarest occasions comes there a series that truly grabs you and elevates itself above entertainment and into something best described as EPICNESS.

This is one of those series! With it's awesome music, manly characters and non-stop action, Gurren Lagann fully deserves a top spot on every anime list out there.
njasis's rating:

People who added this item 444  Average listal rating (276 ratings) 7.5  IMDB Rating 8.4
7. One Piece (1999)
One Piece is just getting better and better...at this point, 460 episodes in, the anime is about to reach one of the biggest climax so far witnessed in anime history, and together with the manga this series is breaking all records of copies sold in Japan. If you still haven't entered the genius world of Eiichiro Oda, then you're really missing out on something!

With that said though, it won't get more than 8/10. Most of the fighting (and there's alot of that) are disappointing, they lack the seriousness and quality you can get in Shippuuden. Instead it becomes too random and humouristic at times, while I'd rather prefer they keep serious.

8. Fighting Spirit (2000)
Enter the world of boxing! Man how much I learned from watching this series. But with that said, it's not just about boxing, it's most of all a great story about friendship and believing in your own strength.

9. Death Note (2006)
Definitely one of the best anime of all times. The story is unique, the characters are among the most intelligent and intellectual characters I've ever seen.

Unfortunately, it becomes too dull and predictable after a certain event. If the anime ended where it should, Death Note would've been in top 5.
njasis's rating:

People who added this item 252  Average listal rating (135 ratings) 7.8  IMDB Rating 8.2
10. Code Geass - Lelouch of the Rebellion (2006)
A fascinating series - tactical warfare on high note. The story is captivating with lots of stuff happening at once, and the main character Lelouch must be one of the most interesting and fleshed out characters up to date.

People who added this item 105  Average listal rating (57 ratings) 8  IMDB Rating 7.7
11. When They Cry (2006)
Never judge something by it's cover! This series caught me by surprise with it's shocking violence and creepy atmosphere that stayed for the most part. In the later episodes it becomes more dialogue heavy, thus the plot is much more complex than it first appeared.
njasis's rating:

People who added this item 27  Average listal rating (14 ratings) 7.5  IMDB Rating 7.7
12. Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom (2009)
Seinen series centering around a man raised to be an assassin. Liked it so far.
njasis's rating:

People who added this item 101  Average listal rating (68 ratings) 7  IMDB Rating 7.3
13. Gantz (2004)
The craziest and most violent anime out there!

Heads flying, bodies ripped apart, LOTS of dead people...awesome!

However, pacing issues and average animation prevents this from being higher on the list. Gotta say the manga is epicly better.

njasis's rating:

People who added this item 122  Average listal rating (66 ratings) 7.8  IMDB Rating 7.7
14. Clannad (2007)
The first season of the best anime ever made. The story is not as good as it's sequel, but the animation and soundtracks are top-notch.

And you HAVE to watch this before watching After Story, it's essential in order to fully realize what makes Clannad so beautiful.
njasis's rating:

People who added this item 165  Average listal rating (82 ratings) 7.9  IMDB Rating 7.8
15. Black Lagoon (2006)
This is not like the pirates on movies. These are REAL pirates, like those who exists in the real world.
njasis's rating:

People who added this item 62  Average listal rating (36 ratings) 6.8  IMDB Rating 7.2
16. School Days (2007)
It's shocking and disturbing. What starts out as a lighthearted school anime, turns into a psychological drama - with the best ending ever!

A LOT of people seems to hate this, but personally I want to give a huge credit to Motonaga, for daring to be different.
njasis's rating:

People who added this item 80  Average listal rating (36 ratings) 7.4  IMDB Rating 7.6
17. Bakemonogatari (2009)
SHAFT has done it again - turned an unoriginal story into true art, with very interesting characters. The dialogues and interaction between them is something you rarely find in other anime.
njasis's rating:

People who added this item 569  Average listal rating (343 ratings) 7.4  IMDB Rating
18. Bleach (2004)
The first 63 episodes of Bleach were great, but from then on it's been going downhill with this series. Not only is the fillers bad, but the canon story has now developed into nothing more than a long, dragged out battle between good and evil...

Apart from the story though, Bleach has a wide range of badass characters, and some of the fights can be really awesome. Definitely worth a watch for starters.

19. Shuffle! (2005)
I've always prefered harems that focus more on romance and drama rather than supernatural comedy. Shuffle is doing a good job here, with characters that are deeper than usual and with more drama than what I expected from this genre. In the end it becomes quite exciting to see which girl our main protagonist will end up with, luckily it doesn't fall into the clichè ending, cause unlike many other harem protagonists, this one here actually picks a girl. Nice!

20. Hell Girl (2005)
njasis's rating:

My personal favorite anime, that I would like to watch over and over again:)

Note: Due to the lack of some anime here on listal, this list is not 100% accurate.

wat? naruto and clannad?? do you have multiple personality disorder?
Posted: 2 years, 9 months ago at Aug 5 19:37
Find me a series with better fighting sequences than Shippuuden, and I'll be glad to add it on the list. As for Clannad it may not be the best stand alone anime, but after watching After Story I realized how important the first season was for character development and building up the upcoming events.

Gantz Death Note Black Lagoon: 1 personality
Clannad(and after) When they cry Bakemonogatari : 2
Naruto One piece ?Code Geass? : 3
School days Hellgirl : 4
Naruto's fights where they pull abilities out of their ass and then spend the episode explaining them? Any series! Seriously the characters stare at each other for a episodes at a time.

You´re saying that I must have four different personalities in order to like different type of series? Lol, well I only have one personality, yet still enjoy many genres of anime.
And seriously, you can´t criticize a supernatural fighting series for having random abilities, One Piece, Bleach and many other supernatural anime are like that.
I won´t deny that during many episodes there´s a lot of staring and dragged out scenes, but still - the fighting during some of the fights in Shippuuden are epicly better than what I´ve seen anywhere else, with the only exception of Final Fantasy 7.

My friend, watch Brotherhood.

Thanks for the feedback.

Seeing Brotherhood being the highest ranked of all anime on MAL, I know it should be an obvious 'must watch' series for any fan of supernatural action. Despite that I still haven't managed to watch more than the first episode of it. No worries though, cause I'm sure that sooner or later FMA will be on this list :)
