Tom Jones - Henry Fielding
A hilarious book about a very good hearted young man with a couple of fatal flaws- his love of women, and his aforementioned goodheartedness.

Middlemarch - George Eliot
A wondefully writted novel which explores just about every type of relationshiip between men and women, and is, at times, beautifully written prose.

The Lord of the Rings - J.R.R. Tolkien
Perhaps the greatest fairy tale ever written. I've lumped the whole trilogy into one selection, since it was actually written as a single work, but Tolkein was forced by the publisher (and the WWII paper shortage) to publush it as a trilogy.

Bleak House - Charles Dickens
This starts off a bit slowly, bue picks up steam and eventually becomes perhaps my favorite Dickens novel. A large cast of interesting characters, and the usual Dickensian social commentary.

The Hobbit - J. R. R. Tolkien
Frankly, more fun to read than the Lord of the Rings, but not nearly as epic.

The Scarlet Pimpernel - Baroness Emmuska Orczy
A lot of fun. The Scarlet Pimpernel reminds me a bit of Batman or James Bond, only in revolutionary France.

One of several Victorian novels in this list showing the unfair double standards of the age towards women, and the hypocrisy of society. Didn't they have anything else to write about? ;-)

A heartbreaking novel showing the rigid clas structure of Victorian England. Jude does everything he can possibly do to better himself, to no avail. Upward movement is impossoble for him.

This one starts out slowly, too, but gets to be a very interesting novel. Robinhood and King Richard the Lionheat? How could this not be great?!

The Idiot - David Magarshack,F.M. Dostoyevsky
A heatbreaking story of one man who is simply too good and kind to fit into society, I enjoyed this book even more than Dostoevsky's more famous "Crime and Punishmenty". Now, I just have to get around to reading "The Brothers Karamazov"!

Another one of those Victorian novels showing the unfairness of Victorian society, especialy towards femal sexuality. A typically sad Thomas Hardy novel.

One of only four novel starring my all time favorite detective, Sherlock Holmes. The first and, in my humble opinion, the best of those novels. Maybe I love it because it's the one that started it all.

A very light and fun to read mystery. I could choose any of the novels in this series written by Lawrence Sanders (NOT the ones written by Vincent Lardo!) to go on my list, but this one seems as good a choice as any of them. Sanders has realy hit his stride in the series by this time.

Hilarious story of three men who row a boat up the Thames. Full of amusing anecdotes and the occasional observation on life or on the scenery of the Thames. The humor is so fresh that it could have been written last week instead of 1889, as it was.
