Aside from her juvenilia and, perhaps, a few tracks on her first album, I don't think she's ever written a song I didn't like. "Ys" expanded the form of the folk song to bursting, filling it with extravagant arrangements courtesy of Van Dyke Parks that manage to stay just on the right of kitsch. "Have One on Me" is simply one of the ten best non-classical albums I've heard, an astonishing achievement considering it's a triple album; of its eighteen sprawling tracks, I think ten are masterpieces full-stop, and the other eight range from very good to outstanding. Her unique voice is a gift to our staid contemporary music scene, and she even managed to make the harp cool.

Favorite songs: "En Gallop"; Peach, Plum, Pear; Emily; Good Intentions Paving Company; In California; Esme

This is primarily for Eno's four "vocal" albums recorded in the 1970's on which, with the assistance of such luminaries as Robert Fripp, Phil Manzanera, Cluster, and, uh, Phil Collins, he took glam rock to heights that Bowie, Queen, and Roxy Music could never dream of attaining, by welding it to a freaky experimentalism and a sincere engagement with classical tradition. The remainder of his work, however, has been a stark falling off, and he has all but wasted himself in collaboration and "ambient" music, which, with a few exceptions, is the epitome of bourgeois pseudo-intellectualism--twee preciousness posing as rigorous asceticism. His early work (and even one or two tracks from his later attempts at song) will last, however.

Favorite songs: On Some Faraway Beach; Mother Whale Eyeless; Third Uncle; St. Elmo's Fire; The Big Ship; Julie With...

Best album: Taking Tiger Mountain (By Strategy)

Who better captures the hysteria of the modern condition, which wavers between extreme elation and utter disaster, than the Talking Heads? Of course David Byrne was a brilliant frontman, but credit must be given too to the rest of the band, who created propulsive, herky-jerky rhythms that turned dance music on its head. I, for one, always first think about the aggressiveness of the guitar interplay in their early work. They were strangely tame and intellectual in the studio; live, they were a primal force.

Favorite songs: Psycho Killer [live]; Found a Job [live]; Life During Wartime [live]; Born Under Punches (The Heat Goes On) [live]; The Great Curve; Girlfriend is Better [live]

Best album: The Name of This Band is Talking Heads (for live), More Songs About Buildings and Food (for studio)
