Favorite movies
1920sOnce upon a time I even managed to see a "live" performance of this film... complete with accompanying pianist/organist(?) providing the dramatic soundtrack.
Fantastic. Opalgem's rating:
1930sI think I first saw this film during my teenage years. Rebelliously staying up late one night to watch the late night movie.
I remember being completely engrossed in the story and the closing scenes with James Cagney made some kind of impact to my young impressionable mind. Opalgem's rating:
I forget when I first saw this film. One of those that is shown on TV every now and then and you end up watching it.
I love this kind of fast-paced "wordy" comedy. Opalgem's rating:
1940sI haven't seen this one in a long time.
It became a favourite as it was always shown over Christmas holidays when I was younger, and so became part of the routine. Opalgem's rating:
I just love the story in this one. Very charming.
Opalgem's rating:
Another one of those fast-paced "war of words" comedies that I always enjoy watching.
Opalgem's rating:
For years I used to muddle this up with the earlier version "The Shop Around The Corner" (see further down the list). Believing for a while that Judy Garland acted alongside James Stewart in this story.
It wasn't until I finally saw them both again that I understood my mistake. Both films are firmly entrenched into my memory now. For their own merits as well as my mix up. :) Opalgem's rating:
My favourite of the "Little Women" films. I prefer June Allyson's version of Jo. I also prefer the pace of the story-telling with this version. Also the way most of the other characters get their fair share of screen time. E.g. Beth's character gets more room in this one, and we get to see her developing fondness for Laurie's grandfather.
It annoyed me how much of the story was left out of the later (Winona Ryder) version. Ah well. Opalgem's rating:
James Mason got to make some really good films in his day. Although quite a dark story I thought this was quite charming.
Opalgem's rating:
See comment above for "In The Good Old Summertime".
Opalgem's rating:
1950sThis one is still shown fairly regularly on one of the TV channels here. Still enjoy watching it each time I managed to find it.
Opalgem's rating:
Perhaps a little cheesy but I grew up watching this and "On Moonlight Bay" pretty regularly. Usually shown during Christmas holidays.
Stuck in the psyche. Opalgem's rating:
This film has been part of my family's make up ever since I can remember. Usually a stalwart of the Christmas holiday television schedule that the whole family would sit down and watch. Good times.
Opalgem's rating:
One of the first sci-fi films I saw on TV when I was younger and I fell in love with it.
Stuck in the psyche. Opalgem's rating:
Such a classic. Fun story but with a point. Quite a combination.
Stuck in the psyche. Opalgem's rating:
I used to find the "monster" pretty frightening when I was younger. Great film.
Stuck in the psyche. Opalgem's rating:
I can't remember when I first saw this film as a youngster. Loved the music, and if I'm honest I fell in love with Mario Lanza with this film.
Opalgem's rating:
Another one that was on TV regularly during my childhood. I loved the colourful drama, and all the animals. :)
Opalgem's rating:
Stuck in the psyche!!
I can't imagine my childhood without this film. Opalgem's rating:
I remember enjoying this classic as a child because of the fun idea of a grown man talking to an invisible rabbit!
Then I saw it again after I grew up and Jimmy Stewart's acting grabbed my attention. Opalgem's rating:
Yep, another one regularly watched during childhood. I thought it charming and Deborah Kerr was wonderful in this.
Opalgem's rating:
Still enjoy this film today. Quite dark in its own way.
Opalgem's rating:
This is one that I don't see very regularly but again it is stuck in the psyche. I found the scenario of being stuck out in the desert like that intriguing.
Opalgem's rating:
I vaguely remembering being taught about Grace Aylward during school and being shown this film as part of that. After forgetting all about it I saw the film again a few years ago and loved it all over again.
Opalgem's rating:
Another old sci-fi film I first saw quite young. I loved it even though I found it quite scary at the time.
Opalgem's rating:
I loved this film the first time I saw it. An intelligent film and quite progressive in many ways, considering this was made in 1959.
Opalgem's rating:
See comments for "By The Light of the Silvery Moon". Same.
Opalgem's rating:
Stuck in the psyche.
It took me a while to appreciate this, but once I was old enough to appreciate the acting I was gripped. Opalgem's rating:
This one snuck up on me in becoming a "favourite". I had forgotten all about it for ages, then saw it again a few years ago. Fun story.
Opalgem's rating:
Yes well, I saw this for the first time as a young, impressionable teenager and as such fell in love with it. I still think it is brilliant.
Opalgem's rating:
Another one that is "stuck in the psyche" from watching it every so often (usually part of an afternoon matinee on the TV).
Opalgem's rating:
Because she sticks her hand in that face, then he does too and gets "bitten". :p
Fun film. Opalgem's rating:
Another one that often appeared during my teenage TV viewing. I just loved the darkness to this adventure story.
Haven't seen it for ages, now I really want to go watch it again. Opalgem's rating:
So progressive really, considering it is 1959 (which seems to be the year for such things).
Fun film but smart too. Opalgem's rating:
1960sPart of the psyche. Haven't seen it in a long time, need to seek it out again.
Opalgem's rating:
Classic, classic script. The end! The jumping off the cliff into the river! The songs.
Opalgem's rating:
I know this is cheesy. What's wrong with a little cheese now and then?
Opalgem's rating:
You are stuck in the desert with a broken plane or two. Enemy forces all around you. No food or water. So what do you do?
Build a new plane. Of course. (Remake wasn't too bad but this one is much better). Opalgem's rating:
I love this film, but can't watch it too often. Too heartbreaking.
Opalgem's rating:
Stuck in the psyche. Classic lines, classic cars.
Opalgem's rating:
My favourite of the Disney's I think. Great songs, plus singing Orang Utans, and bears... and panthers... etc.
Opalgem's rating:
Used to find Fagin scary. And Bill Sykes.
Also there are songs to sing along to. Opalgem's rating:
