Casablanca (1942)
My favorite movie of all time. A flawless gem. Perfectly written, acted and directed. There's been nothing like it before or since. You know all those old movie cliches? Well, lots of them came from here.

"You know, Rick, I have many a friend in Casablanca, but somehow, just because you despise me, you are the only one I trust."

One of the funniest movies ever. Like most Mark Brothers movies it slows down a bit with the musical numbers, but we live in an age of advanced technology where we can fast forward through those bits if we don't feel like sitting through them.

"You're willing to pay him a thousand dollars a night just for singing? Why, you can get a phonograph record of Minnie the Moocher for 75 cents. And for a buck and a quarter, you can get Minnie."

Put aside all the prequels, sequels, Special Editions, spinoffs, merchandizing, overthinking and justifying. Before all of that we had this: a wonderful, heartfelt homage to 1940's movie serials, the samurai flicks of Kurosawa, and the childlike wonder of science fiction.

"I find your lack of faith disturbing."

Maybe an acquired taste. If you don't love the Blaxploitation films of the 70's you might not dig on this. But for a guy like me who was raised on them and still watches them often, this movie is comedy gold. Not just a parody of the genre, but a great big hug and a slap upside the head for it too.

"Your knowledge of scientific biological transmogrification is only outmatched by your zest for kung-fu treachery!"

No matter how many times I watch this movie I'm still not sure I completely understand all the twists and turns. No matter though. The performances are unequalled, the cinematography brilliant, and the direction spectacular. Come for the Bogart, stay for the Astor!

"We didn't exactly believe your story, Miss O'Shaughnessy. We believed your 200 dollars. I mean, you paid us more than if you had been telling us the truth, and enough more to make it all right."

Rio Bravo (1959)
Howard Hawks directs John Wayne and Dean Martin. Dean Martin? That's right! I've always thought this was Dean's movie. His character was the most interesting, and the one with the clearest story arc. Plus, he and Ricky Nelson sing a duet, and a young Angie Dickenson livens things up as a woman who doesn't need to be rescued. Watch it and love westerns again.

"You wanna quit, quit! Go back to the bottle, get drunk. One thing, though. The next time someone throws a dollar into a spittoon, don't expect me to do anything about it. Just get down on your knees and get it."

Serenity (2005)
A brilliant coda to a TV series that was cut far too short. I've heard it's also great if you've never seen "Firefly," but I did, so I can't vouch. Great dialogue and fantastic set pieces make this an absolute sci-fi western mash-up winner.

"This is how it is. Anybody doesn't wanna fly with me any more, this is your port of harbor. There's a lot of fine ways to die. I ain't waiting for the Alliance to choose mine. I mean to confound these bungers. Take my shot at getting to Miranda. Maybe find something I can use to get clear of this. So I hear a word out of any of you that ain't helping me out or taking your leave, I will shoot you down. Get to work!"

Funny? Hell yes, it's funny! It's funny like nothing else! John Astin! George freaking Clooney! The Pope! And an appearance by Playboy Playmate Teri Weigel!

Silverado (1985)
There are a few movies that, if they're on, it doesn't matter where you come in, you know it's a good part. Silverado is one of those movies. If you or your friend hasn't seen it, go ahead. And then be amazed by the amazing and varied cast.

"The world is what you make of it, friend. If it doesn't fit, you make alterations."

Star Trek (2009)
Yeah, there are some hardcore Trekkies that hate this movie. Like every old fan-beloved franchise, everyone thinks they should have been consulted first because they know what's best for their beloved Star Trek/Star Wars/Superman/whatever, and they're going to slag it off if it isn't what they picture in their heads. Well each one of them can suck it. I LOVED this film. Action-packed, brilliant, an homage without aping the source material, cool within an inch of it's life.

"I like this ship! You know, it's exciting!"

It'd be impossible to create a list of every movie I've seen and enjoyed. So here's the first ten that came into my head.

I'm glad you chose to show only ten. Some people will list over 1000 movies (who has 1000 favorite anything?)
