My favorite actress for a number of reasons. She can do subtlety, power, emotion (powerful emotion), depth, warmth, coldness, and everything in-between plus whatever I forgot to mention. All to the highest degree of quality, within a single movie, and even something practically unheard of... within a single scene. She doesn't fall into the trap a lot of renowned actors do where they are present in the performance giving their brand of a character, if that makes sense. She gives character realization. You can see their history and into their mind, making the character believable even if it's an unbelievable character. And she never gives a poor performance, even if the writing of the character and the movie itself is poor. Her presence elevates the quality of such things. She takes on a role and it's as good as it was ever going to be, often better than it has any right to be. She completely gives herself, in ways most don't.

She gave a performance, in what may be my favorite movie (Mulholland Drive), that is largely responsible for it being so. It is the definition of a character being crucial to the story, in fact her performance gives the story and all elements reflect it throughout the movie. The film could not exist without it. As your understanding of the movie grows so does the depth and nuance of the performance. Even when it might appear somewhat straightforward in the beginning there is an ever present subtlety to it that both hints and shows more, and develops in a way that's hard to explain but can be felt. And she has several top tier performances. Like a character who after tragedy begins succumbing to her devils her past to the point of breaking, exposing herself (and the viewer) to a state raw conflicted emotion and pain in 21 Grams. To a character that presents herself as the polar opposite of the previously mentioned. As a character gathered and self-sustained yet still embodies the troubled depth of character with more hidden beneath the surface (done so you feel there's more to her even before you know there's more to see) in Mother And Child. There are many more examples and I imagine more to come.

There's nothing she couldn't or wouldn't take on, and her range has shown no end. She tackles challenges with the utmost grace and always comes out just fine. When thinking of "best actors" my mind thinks of determining factors and a big one that crosses my mind is "capability." Many things can have an affect on a movie's results and thus perceptions. Things like production, changes, edits, or whatever. Plus there's the factor besides choices, the actual opportunities of a particular actor. To quote Ellie Parker "do you think Meryl Streep had to do this shit?" A lot can be said for preferences but she is top class. I could go on for much longer but I will not.

If not my favorite (if I had to give ranks) she is close. She is very similar to Naomi in a lot of ways. From what I have gathered many people have drawn the comparison. So this should come as no surprise that it's a no-brainer choice for me. And I could pretty much say the same about her. The greatest thing for an actor to achieve is for the audience to be convinced, and she succeeds. Where you don't pay attention to the inner workings and mechanical elements that go into scenes, you see a character, and you feel connected. What they do or say feels real to who they are.

One of the finest examples of what makes her all these things, that adds up to one of the finest performances, is the movie Three Colors: Blue. This is another performance I could talk all day about. She gave so much that she could have made awful movies for the rest of her career and it wouldn't begin to tarnish my opinion of her quality. But again like Naomi, even if the movie isn't exactly good (and she has those on her resume) she fully commits and in a way still manages to deliver something of worth. Many of the popularly revered have had projects where the same could not be said. And thus, unlike her, walk away from it a little... less.

I have heard her called the French Streep, I get the comparison somewhat and to an extent both are considered juggernauts of their respective cinema culture, but I'd say she (Huppert) is the superior force. She doesn't have the worldwide recognition from the average movie goer or even critic (aside from Ebert it seems) but she is every bit as deserving. Not that this is either of their faults, nor does it matter to me or I'd imagine even them. Where as I have seen the seemingly limit to Streep's range, no such indication has been given with Huppert.

Her performances tend to feel more real (raw and natural). She's more daring in all aspects of her characters she inhabits. This is something of a general benefit of French cinema but it's not just choice of rolls. Both have movies I don't care much for but she doesn't have a performance I don't. Subtlety is one of the strongest tools an actor can use and she masterfully crafts that for the benefit of the viewer without it seeming to be something staged for us. I apologize for much of this being a comparison, but I feel it serves to show my view of her quality. I also feel the best way to wrap up talking about her (as she's another I could go on about) is to use the words of Roger Ebert that probably sum her up better than I probably could with even more.

"Isabelle Huppert, small and slender, embodies the strength of a fighter. In so many films, she is an indomitable force, yet you can't see how she does it. She rarely acts broadly. The ferocity lives within. Sometimes she is mysteriously impassive; we see what she's determined to do, but she sends no signals with voice or eyes to explain it. There is a lack of concern about our opinion; she will do it, no matter what we think her reasons are."

La môme... words I say to those who don't think much in regards to her talent. Generally these people I find think as such and base it on The Dark Knight Rises. But that character is just genuinely not written well or interesting and she actually does quite well with what little she's given. The fact is, this is far from what she actually is. Her filmography while mostly unknown to most is full of great performances and to fans of her, La môme (or La Vie en Rose) is seen as a particular point of interest. And with good reason. Her performance in that is one of the greatest screen performances. This role, much like those of a few others, is one that could be discussed in such depth as to equivalent its own book. To spare any of you who happen to read this, just watch it if you haven't already. If you have, do it again, you know you want to.

But standout performances in great movies doesn't end there (as I mentioned before) with her. There's A Very Long Engagement, Rust And Bone, The Immigrant, and Two Days, One Night (to name a few). All of them award worthy and showcase her depth and range. This may be sounding like and advert but I can't help stress exposure to one of the best actors working today.

Absolutely brilliant and absolutely overrated. Of course, due to how highly rated she is among most people that's not exactly a bad mark. She really does have some grand performances (to name a few) such as Silkwood and Sophie's Choice, to lesser known movies like Doubt and Adaption. But I wouldn't call her the best actress working today, or even from her generation.

She really lucked out getting her start with some solid roles. Such as being attached to the fairly good (but nothing great) Julia which is of the sort the academy always ate up, making the rather mediocre tv movie The Deadliest Season an irrelevant unnoticed mark on her resume. Then she followed it up by being a part of The Deer Hunter the next year. Granted credit is due for landing the parts. But since that start she reached a stardom where she wasn't for want of good roles that were being thrown her way. She does great in them but it'd be amiss to say no other actress could do them as well if given the chance. Heck, several of her movies (and even some I mentioned here) have performances in them I would say were better than hers in them. But she knows the type of thing she can (and likes to) do, and she often does them amazingly. When she ventures out of that sort of performance area (where you have to admit most of her movies, especially the good ones, fall into) the results can be a mixed bag. Some areas she really isn't anything special. She's usually still at least serviceable despite the quality of the film but I have to ask the question, would the performance level be as accepted or even hailed if it were from anyone else? The stardom kind of skews how she is seen in movies.

With all that said she is still a top class actress, when doing what she can do best it's some of the best, and even when weighed overall she rounds out to still being one of the best actors, and among the personal favorites of mine. It's hard for anyone to say, when being true to yourself, that there are many people better than her. Heck it's even hard to say there are a lot even comparable. While she's not my number one, when judging based on the quality of an actor you reach when you get to her, some of it will be subjective.

Some of my favorite actors and actresses. Separated by gender, naturally ladies first.

As usual, I tend to base on talent above all else. Though some other assets can be a contributing factor to some extent.

Placement in a list like this going by that standard makes it difficult to rank because some have careers where they have consistently solid movies and or performances, others it's based on a few or even one outstanding performance where they might not have many movies, not a lot of particularly good ones, or even given a rough performance or two. So many variations, so much to consider. If I were to consistently update this some of the rankings might change a little every once in a while, but for the most part it's pretty well in order.
