An epic poem is a long poem that generally tells the story of a hero and his heroic deeds and clashes. Oftentimes the story is significant to a culture or region. This practice is ancient, but many writers tackle doing an epic poem to this day.

As there are so many, I've tried to collect only the most significant of epic poetry here. If anyone knows of some more or has any general critique of this list, do not hesitate to comment.

Cool list. Sort of wondering, though, why it shows 3 votes with only 2 avatars? Any idea?

Fun fact related to your list: the Mahabarata is like 18 times longer than the unabridged Odyssey and Illiad combined. I thought about picking up a "copy" one day because I read some excerpts in a book, but when I found out how truly epic and massive it is, I decided I'd just wait for the movie to come out.

One of them must have been by a deleted account. =[

I didn't know that! I just checked and it's 941 pages. Yikes! The Dionysiaca is very long as well. That one's interesting to me because epics don't generally focus on gods, but heroes, and I like Dionysus. I made this list out of my love of the Greco-Roman epics, but as a result I've gained an interest in these other ones as well. I love ancient culture. I have to buy more of these Loebs though.

I love the same. Have you heard of the Masks of God? It's a four volume set: Primitive Mythology, Oriental Mythology, Occidental Mythology, and Creative Mythology by Joseph Campbell? I'm guessing since you're into epics, you've probably heard of Joseph Campbell. But I haven't met many other people who have read the Masks of God from beginning to end. They are the most important books I have read as an adult. You might love them. It's history, mythology, poetry, religion and spirituality all combined in one scholarly, worldwide study.

Actually, that series sounds pretty familiar, and the name Joseph Campbell I'm sure I've heard before. I'll add it to my wish list. I have a whole list of mythological books I want to add to my collection, and I think I have the Greek and Latin works I want covered. Can you recommend other works that I might be interested in, featuring gods and/or heroes from other mythologies? Preferably older when it comes to the rendering of classic tales, but groundbreaking modern studies are also welcome.

Have you ever heard of the Bhagavad Gita? It might be a part of the Mahabarata or some other Indian epic as it features one of the Pandava brothers, Arjuna. But you can get it as a separate book. Let's see, what else? I only read excerpts from the Poetic Edda in Masks of God, but I remember liking it a lot. I was about to say put Gottfried's Tristan on your list too but it's prose. Anyway, it is a great, great book.

As far as modernish studies, I liked The Hero With A Thousand Faces.

Sorry my mind is drawing a blank now. If you pick up a cheap copy of Masks from a used book store, search the indexes. You'll find all sorts of awesome stuff there from all over the world.

Alright, I'll keep Masks is a special place at the back of my head. Wait - what did I just say?

Thanks for the suggestions! Prose is fine, as long as it's an ancient work or straight from the source. I'll have to go back and jot down the ones from other mythologies that I like. Currently I'm looking forward to adding to my Greek/Roman myth collection.

I think the Norse and Egyptian mythologies are going to be easier to dig into since they're the ones I know the most about besides Greco-Roman. But I really do want to learn about all the ones I can.
