The reason Elvis had so many soundtrack albums is because from about 1960 until around 1968 that was his only recordings. These were his Hollywood years where he was making 1 or 2 movies a year and rushed into the studio to record some songs chosen for the movies and to be included on the accompanying soundtrack. It was a great double promotion for the Col Parker's client, but it really damaged Elvis' music career and standing in the music industry. The songs chosen were almost always sub-par, nowhere near the Leiber & Stoller, Doc Pomus, and Otis Blackwell songs he rercorded with great success in the 50's. The Colonel, ever jealous of anyone becoming too close to Elvis and possibly threatening his influence on him, distanced Elvis from these early songwriters. This resulted in Elvis recording about 10 year's worth of movie filler songs of various quality. He never toured or played any live shows during this period. The Hollywood Elvis was becoming a joke to the young, up and coming rock bands of the 60's that had idolized Elvis for his early work.

Thanks for that explanation! It's sad that people lose their way. Did Elvis improve his game after '68? You know, make a comeback or something?
