Amanda was the first Australian to play the role of Elphaba in a full-scale production. She opened both Australian productions of Wicked, however the actual duration of her tenure as Elphaba is debated. Due to health problems, Amanda officially withdrew from Wicked in February 2010. However, there were large chunks of time in which Standby Jemma Rix played the role.

Marcie's journey with Wicked is arguably the most interesting. She first began as an Elphaba Understudy on the 1st National Tour in 12/2006. She left the tour in 12/2007 to play the role of Nessarose in the Los Angeles company.

In 04/2008, the Elphaba Understudy was injured and Caissie Levy was forced to perform on a reduced schedule due to health issues. Marcie then assumed the position of Elphaba u/s, while still playing the role of Nessarose (the only other woman who has done this is Jenna Leigh Green). She began to Standby for the role in LA on 05/14/08 during which she was asked to lead the Broadway production. She left her Standby post officially on 11/02/08.

Jemma Rix (née Stevenson) began her Wicked career performing the role of Elphaba in the Original Cast of a condensed, 30-minute version at Universal Studios in Osaka, Japan in 2006. The production contained a hybrid of English and Japanese lines. She was then tapped to stand by for Amanda Harrison when the first Australian production opened in 2008. She ended up performing most of the shows due to Amanda's constant absences, and eventually took over for her in Sydney.

This is a fantastic list but needs to be updated - Patrice Tipoki and Laura Bunting have both played Elphaba in Austrlain productions (and were definitely the best of the Australian actresses so far!) They should be included too :-)

I have seen Wicked on tour four times and absolutely love it. I finally made it to Broadway to see it there on 4/20/13. I was curious about how many actresses have played Elphaba and set out to find the answer. This list was a great start but not up to date. I spent far more time than I would have expected to find those missing from the list. I finally compiled the list for the Broadway production which is as follows:

Idina Menzel — 10/30/2003 to 1/9/2005
Shoshana Bean — 1/11/2005 to 1/8/2006
Eden Espinosa — 1/10/2006 to 10/8/2006
Ana Gasteyer — 10/10/2006 to 1/7/2007
Julia Murney — 1/9/2007 to 10/7/2007
Stephanie J. Block — 10/9/2007 to 6/15/2008
Kerry Ellis — 6/17/2008 to 11/9/2008
Marcie Dodd — 11/11/2008 to 1/11/2009
Nicole Parker — 1/16/2009 to 7/19/2009
Dee Roscioli — 7/21/2009 to 3/21/2010
Mandy Gonzalez — 3/25/2010 to 1/30/2011
Teal Wicks — 2/1/2011 to 9/25/2011
Jackie Burns — 9/27/2011 to 2/10/2013
Willemijn Verkaik — 2/12/2013 to present

For those curious, Jackie Burns played the role the longest outlasting Idina Menzel by about nine weeks (six weeks if you count the preview). Hope this helps someone else.
