Only Hollywood directors?

Alfred Hitchcock was amazing! He did great work! You could add Busby Burkley if you want a mainly musical director, he was one of the best!

Good list. Suggestions: David Lynch's INLAND EMPIRE or Twin Peaks Fire Walk With Me are definitely worth adding as they are both masterpieces and also for Roman Polanski you could include Repulsion, excepting Chinatown, it's his greatest work.

vicky cristina barcelona a masterpiece? dont insult to woody, please, sorry but that is a real P.O.S.
to talk of masterpieces with 2 or 3 is enough for each director. all can`t do a masterpieces, must be selective. you talk masterpieces no only good or acceptable movies.
