I've had mixed reactions to Scorsese's films, but he's done some fine stuff, has an interest in international cinema (beyond most of his compatriots), picked Ugetsu in his top 12, supported the Mubi world cup I organised, and is following me there, so I wouldn't include him! I like Almodovar. Sokurov is a bit overrated, Von Trier very mixed (I liked Dogville). Most here are hacks

With this list I didn't mean to despise all the work of these directors. I acknowledge its international standing and even save some other of his films, but abominate the airs and pretensions of grandeur that characterizes some of them, their self-complacent style (Capra, Almodóvar or Tarantino) as well as the background or "message" of his works (Sokurov, Von Trier). I haven't seen yet Dogville, but I have queued.
I liked Scorsese's "Goodfellas" and "Casino" but I don't like your gimmicky and sensacionalist, Hollywood's style of filmmaking. With Scorsese I feel the same as with the Spanish director Jose Luis Garci: both seem great critics and historians; known throughout the world of cinema but when they get behind the camera all that undoubted potential is diluted in some powerful stories or simply badly told. To me, they have better taste watching than making movies, although I understand that like a majority people.

I recognize that I started my private war against the USA Cinema, long time ago. In my opinion, since the seventies of the last century only be worth a few films of his independent film and activity of Sundance Institute. Hollywood productions almost do not interest me at all.

Sorry for my horrible English, Kenji :)
