Film Focus - War and Conflict

Generally I like grouping together films that have a similar theme or director to watch close together. However, it is rare that I actually manage to actually have copies of the films in my apartment. So, when intention and opportunity mix... I try not to squander the chance.

I did find myself getting a little choked up up a few times and thoroughly enjoyed the life inside a tank.

If your expecting the full emotional weight of a film like "Das Boot" your'll be disappointed but if your willing to give a more modest film a chance... you might like the film.

For a film about a man addicted to defusing bombs it is a 'good' film. Beyond that I don't understand the hype. Granted there is so little interplay between the characters that you can pretty much read whatever you want into the film.

Re-watch...

Still a powerful film after all these years.

Monsters (2010)

This is not an action film!

It is fairly slow moving and sedate. For some reason this sat well with me. I especially enjoyed the aspect of the film where two Americans go through all the various legal and illegal hoops necessarily to cross the border into the US from Mexico.

I freely confess my love for Wim Wenders. While not one of his more noteworthy films... I still loved the images, story and his use of sound.

Yes, this is the perfect outfit for running through the woods while trying to hide from deranged murderers.

Mixed Bag

As you can tell I'm pretty on the fence about the film. I liked the staging of 'a chatroom'. A far better alternative to movies using computer graphics that no were near represent anything a real person can find.

Not a lavish over-the-top film but I found the story compelling and the actors believable.

Ether something was lacking from the Tennessee Williams screenplay or something else failed. It wasn't a total nightmare of a film to sit through but... I would never recommend the film.

Wealth, incest, murder... how can you make these things painfully boring? By letting Tom Kalin direct the film... that is how :P

If your hoping to see your favorite stars at least looking wonderful, you'll be disappointed on that end as well. So beyond a morbid fascination to see why no one is saying good things about this film... not worth the rental nor the time.

Cinema Diary for 2011
The Year of The Rabbit

This is a scrapbook of ideas, impressions and information about the movies I watch. It is basic, rough and raw in an effort to expand my personal viewing experiences. This is a creative exercise not a critical one. I hope you enjoy.

Great mix of films here. I thought Hurt Locker was well-made, but totally agree with you that it's overhyped & overrated. On the other hand I think Deer Hunter is overrated too...that wedding scene just kills it for me by going on and on and on. :P

Looks like you fell into the camp that's disappointed by The Ward too, so I'm now even more reluctant to watch it than I was at first. I may just write it off all together.

Glad to see you enjoyed Spider Baby (as if I didn't know) and Exit Through the Gift Shop. A few of these I'll look into...

Oh, actually thanks for catching that... I had rated "Deer Hunter" too high. Out of the five films "Full Metal Jacket" stands as my favorite from the group. I wish I had found a stronger film to wrap up that theme but I was pretty burnt out by the end of that weekend.
Posted: 7 years ago at Aug 6 6:57
Yeah 8/10 seems more like it. I'm not much of a fan of war movies, but Full Metal Jacket is one of my favorites. Earlier this year (late March-early April) Netflix forced me to watch a handful of war movies back-to-back by pulling them off instant watch, so I definitely understand being burned out on them.

I like the idea of having a film focus. I was really impressed by both Full Metal Jacket and Lebanon. I haven't seen Paradise Now yet.

Just now finished watching The Ward... why didn't I become aware of this list before I bumped it up to the top of my queue? Ugh. What a let down from John Carpenter.

Started watching the Hidden Fortress last night, but was Way Too tired to even think about attempting it. Hopefully in the next few days though so I can finally get it back to a friend.

I was equally disappointed with Teardrop Diamond. And I absolutely love Tennessee Williams. Congrats on maintaining a film focus throughout the month. I've never been able to do it. Outside of a few "shitty frivolous horror movies that productive members of society would never bother with" months.
