There was is both a certain immaturity in writing and appreciating this; one man's junk is another's treasure, and The Fifth Element. Written by Luc Besson when he was a teenager, it is a love letter to Moebius, French cartoons and

Fireworks (1997)
Takeshi 'Beat' Kitano has been a defining director of the 1990s, with his neo-noir crime thrillers reinvigorating Japanese crime cinema and providing a template for filmmakers. With Hana-Bi, he elevates himself to master auteur, expertly juggling moments of serenity and introspection with bursts of violence. The frame captures expression, mise-en-scene and

Like with Nausicaa, auteur Hayao Miyazaki tackles environmental themes through a lens of fantasy, but with a far more traditional heroic adventure framework and a stronger eye to detail.

Dobermann (1997)
The blockbuster era of the 1990s saw the Action genre elevate to more extreme levels of keneticism, and Dobermann was at the forefront. Prepared, acted and executed by madman, it gleefully defies physics, logic and, striving toward entertainment. Borrowing from John Woo and delivering on a gun-frenzy, it rises above most of its genre largely due to the frenzied cinematography of and the editing of, who employs montage, Kuleshov with expert abandon.

Drive (1997)
The boom of 90s direct-to-video Action films delivered us many gems across the decade, one of them being Drive. Directed by Power Rangers alumni Steven Woo, he really brings his over-the-top sensibilities and steady frame, which gives Marc Dacascos perhaps his most ideal vehicle (no pun intended) as a Steven Segal and Jackie Chan. His charisma is given grounds alongside his physical prowess, Woo constantly uses him to propel the film.

Kevin Sorbo's attempt to migrate to the realms of the bigscreen was hardly a challenging journey, sticking to the safe adventure fantasy that characterised Hercules. While we were wetting our pens at the opportunity to denounce it as simply another Conan ripoff, the problem with Kull is that it doesn't want to be anything at all, simply content to remain within the confines of the Legendary Journeys and within the constraints of its budget. Dull the Conqueror is so deathly boring, so horribly unengaging, the waft of

It is difficult to appraise a Power Rangers movie with any kind of rigour, on one hand to evaluate it seriously would be to admit you had expectations at all but on the other, the 1995 cinematic film wasn't too bad given its origins and the level of talent involved. It then follows that Turbo is a step back, gone are the CGI and scope, and again we have cheap costumes, televisual photography and people in monster costumes wrestling around on paper maché sets. Made to launch the new cars-based season of the show, the film foregoes any sequel status, simply moving forward with an entirely different cast, budget and scriptwriting team that undoes any chance of a bigscreen franchise. While it functioned to launch the new season, the potential to have a bigscreen franchise could have, they could have...there I am with expectations for Power Rangers again.
