Noir is atmospheric. All about those shadowy dark turners no one's supposed to turn. All about those darkly lit places no one's supposed to tread.
Lurking in those corners are always those dames- all brains, beauty, and trouble-, darkness, a whole other world one can't back from.
Those tough talking, seemingly unbreakable "heroes' always tread there, always get sucked in.
Never heeding the voices of their pretty little conscience, the girl that loves and loves and only gets her heart broken in the end. Maybe they're blinded by the shadows? Or maybe poisoned by the cigarette smoke?
Noir's another world, a land of fiction. But it's fascinatingly gritty and real. With all it's familar characters.
The Femme Fatal, The Anti-Hero, and the poor Good Girl.....

Phyllis: I'd say around ninety.
Walter Neff: Suppose you get down off your motorcycle and give me a ticket.
Phyllis: Suppose I let you off with a warning this time.
Walter Neff: Suppose it doesn't take.
Phyllis: Suppose I have to whack you over the knuckles.
Walter Neff: Suppose I bust out crying and put my head on your shoulder.
Phyllis: Suppose you try putting it on my husband's shoulder.
Walter Neff: That tears it. " -Double Indemnity.
"Joyce Harwood: Well, don't you even say 'Good night'?
Johnny Morrison: It's good-bye, and it's tough to say good-bye.

Johnny Morrison: Every guy's seen you before somewhere. The trick is to find you." The Blue Dahlia.
"Speaking of horses, I like to play them myself. But I like to see them workout a little first, see if they're front runners or come from behind, find out what their whole card is, what makes them run. " Vivian- The Big Sleep"
"I never saw her in the daytime. We seemed to live by night. What was left of the day went away like a pack of cigarettes you smoked. I didn't know where she lived. I never followed her. All I ever had to go on was a place and time to see her again. I don't know what we were waiting for. Maybe we thought the world would end." Jeff- Out of the Past.
"I hope they don't hang you, precious, by that sweet neck. Yes, angel, I'm gonna send you over. The chances are you'll get off with life. That means if you're a good girl, you'll be out in 20 years. I'll be waiting for you. If they hang you, I'll always remember you." Sam Spade- The Maltese Falcon.
"Listen to me. I'm no good, I never pretended to be. But I love you. I'm a hustler, I've always been one. But I love you. I may be a thief of the world, but with you I've always been on the level." Stan- Nightmare Alley.
"I don't even know what that means: "stands for"? There's no difference in people except the size of their tips. A drunk is a drunk and a pass is a pass if it comes from a Cadillac or a foreigner." Edie- No Way Out.
"He thought the world was a horrible place. He couldn't have been very happy, ever. He didn't trust people. Seemed to hate them. He hated the whole world. You know, he said people like us had no idea what the world was really like." Charlie- Shadow of Doubt.
